Previous research has investigated gender and its implications for HCI. We consider inclusive design of technology whatever the gender of its users of particular importance. This conceptual review provides an overview of the motivations that have driven research in gender and inclusive HCI design. We review the empirical evidence for the impact of gender in thinking and behavior which underlies HCI research and design. We then present how HCI design might inadvertently embed and perpetuate gender stereotypes. We then present current HCI design approaches to tackle gender stereotypes and to produce gender-inclusive designs. We conclude by discussing possible future directions in this area.

Trigeminal fibers terminate within the facial mucosa and skin and transmit tactile, proprioceptive, chemical, and nociceptive sensations. Trigeminal sensations can arise from the direct stimulation of intraepithelial free nerve endings or indirectly through information transmission from adjacent cells at the peripheral innervation area. For mechanical and thermal cues, communication processes between skin cells and somatosensory neurons have already been suggested. High concentrations of most odors typically provoke trigeminal sensations in vivo but surprisingly fail to activate trigeminal neuron monocultures. This fact favors the hypothesis that epithelial cells may participate in chemodetection and subsequently transmit signals to neighboring trigeminal fibers. Keratinocytes, the major cell type of the epidermis, express various receptors that enable reactions to multiple environmental stimuli. Here, using a co-culture approach, we show for the first time that exposure to the odorant chemicals induces a chemical communication between human HaCaT keratinocytes and mouse trigeminal neurons. Moreover, a supernatant analysis of stimulated keratinocytes and subsequent blocking experiments with pyrodoxalphosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulfonate revealed that ATP serves as the mediating transmitter molecule released from skin cells after odor stimulation. We show that the ATP release resulting from Javanol® stimulation of keratinocytes was mediated by pannexins. Consequently, keratinocytes act as chemosensors linking the environment and the trigeminal system via ATP signaling.

Olfactory receptors (ORs), which belong to the G-protein coupled receptor family, are expressed in various human tissues, including skin. Cells in non-olfactory tissues tend to express more than one individual OR gene, but function and interaction of two or more ORs in the same cell type has only been marginally analysed. Here, we revealed OR2A4/7 and OR51B5 as two new ORs in human skin cells and identified cyclohexyl salicylate and isononyl alcohol as agonists of these receptors. In cultured human keratinocytes, both odorants induce strong Ca2+ signals that are mediated by OR2A4/7 and OR51B5, as demonstrated by the receptor knockdown experiments. Activation of corresponding receptors induces a cAMP-dependent pathway. Localization studies and functional characterization of both receptors revealed several differences. OR2A4/7 is expressed in suprabasal keratinocytes and basal melanocytes of the epidermis and influences cytokinesis, cell proliferation, phosphorylation of AKT and Chk-2 and secretion of IL-1. In contrast, OR51B5 is exclusively expressed in suprabasal keratinocytes, supports cell migration and regeneration of keratinocyte monolayers, influences Hsp27, AMPK1 and p38MAPK phosphorylation and interestingly, IL-6 secretion. These findings underline that different ORs perform diverse functions in cutaneous cells, and thus offering an approach for the modulated treatment of skin diseases and wound repair.

This article seeks to investigate the public images of the 1569 Rising in the North, as conceived by government policy, propaganda and loyalist writers on the one hand and by Catholic theologians and sympathisers on the other. It focuses especially on texts such as proclamations, homilies, street and folk ballads, pamphlets and tracts. To date there is only one study which deals extensively with the polemical literature on the Rising. This is that by J. K. Lowers published in 1953. He concentrates on Tudor ideas of civil obedience and its representation in loyalist writing wanting to help literature students to understand contemporary texts. As the outermost barrier of the body, the skin is exposed to multiple environmental factors, including temperature, humidity, mechanical stress, and chemical stimuli such as odorants that are often used in cosmetic articles. Keratinocytes, the major cell type of the epidermal layer, express a variety of different sensory receptors that enable them to react to various environmental stimuli and process information in the skin. Here we report the identification of a novel type of chemoreceptors in human keratinocytes, the olfactory receptors (ORs). We cloned and functionally expressed the cutaneous OR, OR2AT4, and identified Sandalore, a synthetic sandalwood odorant, as an agonist of this receptor. Sandalore induces strong Ca(2+) signals in cultured human keratinocytes, which are mediated by OR2AT4, as demonstrated by receptor knockdown experiments using RNA interference. The activation of OR2AT4 induces a cAMP-dependent pathway and phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (Erk1/2) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38 MAPK). Moreover, the long-term stimulation of keratinocytes with Sandalore positively affected cell proliferation and migration, and regeneration of keratinocyte monolayers in an in vitro wound scratch assay. These findings combined with our studies on human skin organ cultures strongly indicate that the OR 2AT4 is involved in human keratinocyte re-epithelialization during wound-healing processes.

Die Frage nach den Menschenrechten hangt unmittelbar mit der Bildungsfrage zusammen. Bildung selbst stellt die notwendige Grundlage fur die personliche und gesellschaftliche Entwicklung dar. Damit geht es grundsatzlich um das Recht jedes Individuums auf Bildung und eine zielgerichtete Erziehung, das international und national verankert und Grundlage fur die Entwicklung von Konzepten der Menschenrechtsbildung ist.

Ob sich eine Strategie in der Praxis durchsetzen lasst, ist in erster Linie eine Frage der damit verbundenen erkennbaren Werthaltigkeit fur die Akteure. Der Wert ist subjektiver Art und masgeblich verantwortlich fur die Motivation der Akteure zur Umsetzung von Nachhaltigkeit. An dieser Stelle wird bewusst auf eine ausfuhrliche Darstellung der Inhalte des Wertebegriffs verzichtet, der meist einhergeht mit der Diskussion um den Nutzen. In der wissenschaftlichen Literatur finden sich zahllose Werke, die sich der Bedeutung dieses Themas gewidmet haben. Je nach Epoche, politischem Umfeld und Wissenschaftsbereich sind differenzierte und immer wieder abgewandelte oder erganzte Erklarungen anzutreffen, so dass die Begriffe Nutzen und Wert letztlich als unbestimmt charakterisiert werden mussen. Fur die vorliegende Fragestellung reicht es aus, sich daruber zu verstandigen, dass Nutzen und Wert materieller und immaterieller, monetarer wie nonmonetarer Art sein konnen. Im Verstandnis der Nachhaltigkeitstheorie konnen sie okonomische, okologische und/ oder soziale Bedurfnisse befriedigen.

Jeder einzelne Akteur in einem Projektnetzwerk kann ein Risikofaktor, aber auch ein Leistungstrager fur die Umsetzung einer Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie und den Projekterfolg sein. Im Folgenden wird anhand konkreter Situationen dargestellt, wie Akteure sich behindern konnen, aber auch den gemeinsamen Projekterfolg zu verstarken in der Lage sind. Es wird deutlich, worin die Grunde des einen oder anderen Falls zu suchen sind.

Das Entscheidungsverhalten des einzelnen Akteurs ist in den vorangehenden Kapiteln eingehend untersucht worden. Grunde und Bedingungen wurden aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln dargelegt.

Im gesamten Lebenszyklus entsteht in unregelmasiger Abfolge der Bedarf nach Planungs- und Bauleistungen, die nur praktisch umsetzbar sind, wenn parallel dazu Finanzierungs- und Versicherungsleistungen garantiert werden konnen. Hinzu kommt gegebenenfalls fachliches Know-how von Juristen, Sachverstandigen und anderen Beratern.

Die Lucken der institutionellen Steuerung konnten anhand einer Gegenuberstellung der Barrieren nachhaltigen Entscheidens mit den bestehenden Steuerungsinstrumenten identifiziert werden. Im Ergebnis sind Defizite feststellbar, die erstens inhaltlich durch neu ausgerichtete Zielsetzungen, und zweitens formal-strukturell durch differenziertes Andocken bei den Institutionen bereinigt werden mussen.

Nachhaltigkeit – in der deutschen Sprache existiert der Begriff bereits seit dem fruhen 17. Jahrhundert, als Terminus im heute verstandenen Sinn gewinnt er an Popularitat seit den 1970er-Jahren. Inzwischen hat er vereinzelt den Status eines Leitbildes erreicht und dennoch – oder gerade deshalb – haftet ihm immer noch eine intransparente Bedeutung an.

Funktionierende Netzwerke verschiedener Grose in einem geschaftsmasigen Umfeld finden sich in Unternehmen. Hier sind je nach Firmengrose mehrere Akteursrollen zum Zweck der Erfullung eines gemeinsamen Kerngeschafts zusammengeschlossen. Es konnen bestimmte Parallelen zwischen der Unternehmenssteuerung und der Steuerung von Stakeholdern eines Immobilienprojektes beobachtet werden.

Die Verstandigung und das Verhalten der Akteure in Bezug auf soziookonomische Zusammenhange und die Umweltproblematik stellen in der bau- und immobilienwirtschaftlichen Forschung noch Randthemen dar. Die gegenwartige Situation der bauund immobilienwirtschaftlichen Forschung in Bezug auf nachhaltiges Planen, Bauen und Betreiben ermoglicht es kaum, Ansatze fur die vorliegende Aufgabenstellung heranzuziehen. Dennoch findet sich gelegentlich ein verwandter Problemaufriss, wenngleich mit anderem Schwerpunkt. Im Wesentlichen lassen sich technische und kaufmannische Herangehensweisen unterscheiden.

Welche Relevanz hat die Entscheidungstheorie innerhalb der Immobilienokonomik – und wie kann Nachhaltigkeit mit ihrer Hilfe strategisch verortet werden?

Um sich der Problematik nicht nachhaltiger Entscheidungen zu nahern, werden zwei Ansatze parallel vorangetrieben. Die Analyse der Immobilienakteure soll im vorliegenden Kapitel empirisch eingeleitet und spater theoretisch untermauert werden.
