Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is the blockage or narrowing of the portal vein by a thrombus being a relatively rare condition, linked to the presence of an underlying liver disease or prothrombotic disorders. We present the case of a 55-year-old woman, who was rushed to a territorial hospital for abdominal pain in her right flank, accompanied by nausea and vomiting for about a week. Following clinical, paraclinical investigations and exploratory laparoscopy, the suspicion of transverse colon tumor was raised, later refuted by exploratory laparotomy that detected an enteromesenteric infarction in the ileum, with localized peritonitis, for which a segmental enterectomy with termino-terminal anastomosis was performed, with a slow favorable evolution. Two months later, the patient went to the "Sf Spiridon" Hospital in Iasi for transit disorders associated with rectal hemorrhages. Following paraclinical investigations, a co-infection with Clostridium Difficile and Sars-Cov-2 was identified, for which adequate treatment was lead, but with the persistence of rectorages, which is why a computed tomography (CT) scan was performed. Imaging revealed thrombosis of the port system and the superior mesenteric vein, and it was initiated anticoagulant therapy. The paper will help raise awareness of the complexity of cases associated with portal vein thrombosis.

Both pathologies—obesity and depression—have high prevalence rates and have serious negative effects on the public's health. In recent meta-analyses, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies, they have been observed in people of all races. Both obesity and major depression are risk factors related to one another. In this paper, we suggest an overview of the two interconnected biological processes, including genetic influences and changes to the systems in charge of energy synthesis and consumption (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and inflammation, neuroendocrine regulators, and gut microbiota). Additionally, we look into how people perceive their bodies and social stigma, as well as the potential benefits of physical activity and weight-loss surgery on comorbid conditions and quality of life.

The study aims to assess the significance of negative pressure therapy in the treatment of surgical wounds and using the ANSYS simulation software for fluid dynamics calculation will give us the possibility to determine the fluid flow dynamics inside the vacuum kit during its use. Material and methods: To predict the speed, pressure and temperature of the fluid inside a vacuum kit, we used numerical modeling, using the finite element method, of the gas fluid flow phenomenon. Results: The pressure of the liquid fluid is higher in the area of contact with the wound, compared to the pressure of the liquid fluid in the outlet area of the capillary tube, accentuating with increasing pressure applied to the end of the tube. 32% of the fluid pressure at the interface between the sponge and the wound. Conclusions: The rate of pressure transmission inside the sponge is variable favoring the appearance of ischemia areas on contact with the wound.

Oxygen-free radicals, reactive oxygen species (ROS) or reactive nitrogen species (RNS), are known by their “double-sided” nature in biological systems. The beneficial effects of ROS involve physiological roles as weapons in the arsenal of the immune system (destroying bacteria within phagocytic cells) and role in programmed cell death (apoptosis). On the other hand, the redox imbalance in favor of the prooxidants results in an overproduction of the ROS/RNS leading to oxidative stress. This imbalance can, therefore, be related to oncogenic stimulation. High levels of ROS disrupt cellular processes by nonspecifically attacking proteins, lipids, and DNA. It appears that DNA damage is the key player in cancer initiation and the formation of 8-OH-G, a potential biomarker for carcinogenesis. The harmful effect of ROS is neutralized by an antioxidant protection treatment as they convert ROS into less reactive species. However, contradictory epidemiological results show that supplementation above physiological doses recommended for antioxidants and taken over a long period can lead to harmful effects and even increase the risk of cancer. Thus, we are describing here some of the latest updates on the involvement of oxidative stress in cancer pathology and a double view on the role of the antioxidants in this context and how this could be relevant in the management and pathology of cancer.

Aim: to evaluate the possible anthropometric, clinical, biological, and pathological factors that could be associated with an increased mortality of the surgical patients with concomitant CD infection. Material and methods: The study was carried out on a group of 123 surgical patients who were operated in the IIIrd Surgical Unit of the “Sf. Spiridon” University Hospital Romania and were diagnosed with CDI during hospitalization. Results: We noted 20 deaths among the patients from our study group. Characteristic for the deceased patient’s group was the presence of sepsis before or after CDI diagnosis (p = 0.001). The involving of a parenchymal organ (p = 0.001) and the presence of metastases (p = 0.025) were significantly higher in the deceased patient’s group. Reintervention induced an estimated risk of death approximately 2-fold higher (p = 0.002). The estimated risk of death was slightly higher in patients with renal chronic disease (p = 0.001), obesity (p = 0.009), Diabetes Mellitus (p = 0.005) and chronic cardiac insufficiency (p = 0.05). All patients who died had surgical diseases requiring postoperative antibiotic treatment (p = 0.001) especially with Cephalosporin (p = 0.003) and Clindamycin (p = 0.047). The use of proton pump inhibitor and anticoagulant medication was statistically higher in patients who died. Conclusions: Unfavorable evolution of surgical patients with CDI is highly associated with obesity, renal chronic disease, chronic cardiac insufficiency, diabetes, chronic oral anticoagulants prior to CDI, treatment with third generation cephalosporin, clindamycin, and PPI after surgery.

Background: Postmortem assessment of endogenous ketoacidosis is primarily focused on the determination of 3-beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). The aim of our study was to identify the most adequate body fluid and postmortem quantification method for assessing ketoacidosis status immediately prior to death. Material and method: We performed a prospective study on 53 cases of sudden death or in-hospital death that were considered forensic cases and could present a state of ketoacidosis prior to death, the autopsies being performed at a post-mortem interval of 24–72 h. BHB analysis was performed by Multi-Functional Monitoring System XPER Technology analyzer (method A—portable analyzer) for peripheral blood, and by BHB Assay MAK041 Kit (method B) for vitreous humor (VH) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Results: We identified 11 ketoacidosis cases using method A and 9 ketoacidosis cases using method B. All nine cases of ketoacidosis identified using the MAK041 kit were confirmed with the portable analyzer. For the 2 cases of ketoacidosis identified only with the portable analyzer, the values obtained by method B were at the diagnostic limit. BHB concentrations determined in VH and CSF by method B were statistically significantly correlated with each other and with peripheral blood BHB concentration. Conclusion: BHB, a marker of ketoacidosis, should be determined post-mortem whenever a metabolic imbalance is suspected irrespective of known risk factors or obvious morphological substrate to help establish the thanatogenic mechanism. BHB quantification can easily be performed using a handheld automatic analyzer and a sample of peripheral blood as BHB levels in various body fluids correlate with each other.

Large vessel vasculitis (LVV), such as giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu’s arteritis (TA), are autoimmune diseases characterized by granulomatous inflammation of large vessels, including the aorta and its branch vessels. Disease etiology is still unknown. Comparative immunohistochemical (IMH) studies between GCA and TA cases might be important. The purpose of the study was to assess and to compare composition and distribution of the inflammatory infiltrate of the ascending aortic aneurysmal wall. Ascending aortic aneurysm (AAA) tissue blocks belonging to one male patient of 59 years and one female patient aged 36 years, diagnosed with GCA and TA, respectively, were used for histological and IMH analysis. Immunohistochemistry staining was performed using antibodies directed against markers of lymphocytes and macrophages. Histological analysis showed in both cases lymphocytes, macrophages, epithelioid histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells that infiltrate all layers of the arterial wall, intimal hyperplasia and adventitial fibrotic changes of different degrees. Immunohistochemical examination showed that the media and adventitia from GCA aortitis case had increased number of T cells and macrophages compared with TA aortitis case, and a less number of B cells in both. Our study made a morphologic and morphometric analysis of lymphocyte infiltration within aneurysm aortic tissue and demonstrated that immune inflammation is a typical feature of GCA and TA diseases. We also noted the utility of immunohistochemical staining of the aortic biopsies for evaluation of indeterminate or healing GCA and TA cases. Context Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia in clinical practice. The increasing evidence supports links between inflammation and AF. There is evidence showing that obesity is a major cause of adipose tissue (AT) inflammation. Ghrelin (GHRL), through its growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) present on adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs), could modulate AT inflammation. Objective Our study aimed to evaluate the role of adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) and their GHS-R in adipose tissue samples of right atrial appendages (RAA) biopsies. Subjects and method We obtained RAA biopsies from 10 obese patients, undergoing cardiac surgery for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and developing postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). The epicardial tissue samples were examined using immunohistochemistry to visualize and quantify CD68 and GSH-R expression of the ATMs. Results Histologically, the mean adipocyte diameter (MAD) of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) was larger in EAT samples with inflammation as compared to EAT without inflammation (84.2 µm vs. 79.6 µm). The expression of CD68 was lower in EAT without inflammation as compared to EAT with inflammation in adipose tissue samples. Similarly, the expression of GSH-R was lower in EAT samples without inflammation as compared to EAT samples with inflammation in adipose tissue. Conclusions Increased epicardial fat area, macrophage infiltration, and GHS-R expression in epicardial ATMs appeared to be associated with postoperative atrial fibrillation in obese patients.

Background: It has been suggested that patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of > 60 kg/m2 should be offered expedited Bariatric Surgery (BS) during the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The main objective of this study was to assess the safety of this approach. Methods: We conducted a global study of patients who underwent BS between 1/05/2020 and 31/10/2020. Patients were divided into three groups according to their preoperative BMI - Group I (BMI60 kg/m2). The effect of preoperative BMI on 30-day morbidity and mortality, procedure choice, COVID-19 specific safety protocols, and comorbidities was assessed. Results: This study included 7084 patients (5197;73.4 % females). The mean preoperative weight and BMI were 119.49 ± 24.4 Kgs and 43.03 ± 6.9 Kg/m2, respectively. Group I included 6024 (85 %) patients, whereas Groups II and III included 905 (13 %) and 155 (2 %) patients, respectively. The 30-day mortality rate was higher in Group III (p = 0.001). The complication rate and COVID-19 infection were not different. Comorbidities were significantly more likely in Group III (p = 70 kg/m2 had a 30-day mortality of 7.7 % (2/26). None of these patients underwent a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Conclusion: The 30-day mortality rate was significantly higher in patients with BMI > 60 kg/m2. There was, however, no significant difference in complications rates in different BMI groups, probably due to differences in procedure selection.

Background Age ≥ 65 years is regarded as a relative contraindication for bariatric surgery. Advanced age is also a recognised risk factor for adverse outcomes with Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) which continues to wreak havoc on global populations. This study aimed to assess the safety of bariatric surgery (BS) in this particular age group during the COVID-19 pandemic in comparison with the younger cohort. Methods We conducted a prospective international study of patients who underwent BS between 1/05/2020 and 31/10/2020. Patients were divided into two groups — patients ≥ 65-years-old (Group I) and patients < 65-years-old (Group II). The two groups were compared for 30-day morbidity and mortality. Results There were 149 patients in Group 1 and 6923 patients in Group II. The mean age, preoperative weight, and BMI were 67.6 ± 2.5 years, 119.5 ± 24.5 kg, and 43 ± 7 in Group I and 39.8 ± 11.3 years, 117.7±20.4 kg, and 43.7 ± 7 in Group II, respectively. Approximately, 95% of patients in Group 1 had at least one co-morbidity compared to 68% of patients in Group 2 (p = < 0.001). The 30-day morbidity was significantly higher in Group I (11.4%) compared to Group II (6.6%) (p = 0.022). However, the 30-day mortality and COVID-19 infection rates were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions Bariatric surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with a higher complication rate in those ≥ 65 years of age compared to those < 65 years old. However, the mortality and postoperative COVID-19 infection rates are not significantly different between the two groups. Graphical abstract

Adipocyte expansion, which involves adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs), is a critical process with implications in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance associated with obesity. Impaired subcutaneous adipogenesis leads to dysfunctional, hypertrophic adipocytes, chronic low-grade inflammation, and peripheric insulin resistance. Alternatively, it has also been proposed that the preservation of the functionality of subcutaneous adipocyte precursors could contribute to some obese individuals remaining metabolically healthy. Very few studies evaluated the changes in the adipogenic differentiation for human subcutaneous ASCs following bariatric surgery. Weight loss after bariatric surgery involves extensive remodeling of adipose tissue, comprising the hyperplasia-hypertrophy balance. Subcutaneous ASCs may be implicated in the variations of bariatric outcomes, through a different restoration in their proliferative and adipogenic potential. Weight loss induced by bariatric surgery correlates to the subcutaneous ASC functions and could explain the variability of metabolic improvement. Limited research data are available to the present and these data support the importance of diagnosis of subcutaneous ASCs functions as predictors of metabolic improvement after bariatric surgery.

Homeobox B13 (HOXB13) and trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) are novel candidates for the classification of prostate cancer (PC) in molecular subtypes that could predict the clinical evolution of patients. The aim of our study was to analyze the possible associations between HOXB13 and TFF3 immunohistochemical (IHC) expression in sporadic prostate adenocarcinoma (PAC), the potential prognostic value in relation to the classical clinico-pathological parameters, as well as their role in defining distinct molecular subtypes of this malignancy. The study group comprised 105 patients diagnosed with PAC who underwent radical prostatectomy. IHC exam was performed using anti-HOXB13 and anti-TFF3 antibodies and a scoring system that permit the separation of the cases into two subgroups, with low and high immunoexpression, respectively. The statistical analysis evaluated the relationship between the two immunomarkers and clinico-pathological parameters. The Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank Mantel-Cox test were used for assessing the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-progression free survival. Four subgroups of PAC were defined based on the IHC overexpression and low immunoexpression of HOXB13 and TFF3. High HOXB13 and TFF3 immunoexpression was commonly identified in cases characterized by a Gleason score over 7, a G4 or G5 dominant pattern, a grade group of 3 or 4 and a preoperatory PSA serum level over 20 ng/mL. HOXB13 overexpression was also associated with pathological tumor-node-metastasis (pTNM) stage. The subgroup with both low HOXB13 and TFF3 immunoexpression had the highest PSA-progression free interval, whereas the subgroup with high HOXB13 immunoexpression and low TFF3 immunoexpression presented the lowest rate, but no statistically significant differences were registered. Our results sustain the role of HOXB13 and TFF3 in the stratification of PAC. Further investigations in larger cohorts are imposed to validate the clinical significance of these subgroups in the diagnostic and prognostic of PAC.

Athletes are exposed to a tremendous amount of stress, both physically and mentally, when performing high intensity sports with frequent practices, pushing numerous athletes into choose to use ergogenic aids such as caffeine or β-alanine to significantly improve their performance and ease the stress and pressure that is put onto the body. The beneficial or even detrimental effects of these so-called ergogenic aids can be appreciated through the use of numerous diagnostic tools that can analyze various body fluids. In the recent years, saliva samples are gaining more ground in the field of diagnostic as it is a non-invasive procedure, contains a tremendous amount of analytes that are subject to pathophysiological changes caused by diseases, exercises, fatigue as well as nutrition and hydration. Thus, we describe here the current progress regarding potential novel biomarkers for stress and physical activity, salivary α-amylase and salivary cortisol, as well as their use and measurement in combination with different already-known or new ergogenic aids.

Achilles tendon disorders, chronic degenerative tendon disorders (tendinopathy) are a frequent pathology in the Orthopaedic ward and quite difficult to treat. The autors present the case of a number of 25 patients (18 females and 7 male), with mean age of 37.2 years,a group of young and active patients, with chronic unilateral Achilles tendinopathy (at least 6 months of symptoms) refractary to conservative treatment, including physical rest and physical theraphy. All study patients have no surgical treatment performed at the Achilles tendons, or any corticosteroids infiltrations in this region. Patients were treated with 3 PRP injections at one week interval. The patient were evaluated clinically and with the ultrasound at baseline, at 1 month and at 6 months, further results will be evaluated at 1 year and early after that. Scores used for evaluation were: Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and VISA A score. The study group that included 25 patients male and females were evaluated using the VAS score and the VISA A questionnaire referring to Achilles tendinopathy, pain symptoms and functionality. Results were assessed at 1 month and at 6 months, both scores improved significantly, and also the ultrasound imaging findings. The majority of the patients were symptoms free after the 3 step PRP local infiltrations showing stable results at 6 months, while 5 of the patients showed no clinical improvement of symptoms. The overall findings in our study show that repeated PRP injections for Achilles tendinopathy obtained good results in term of clinical symptom improvement and alo stable results in time at the 6 months evaluation. On this study group discussiond reffer mainly to the small gropup of patients, only 25, and to the short term follow up period, 6 months, with future data to be analysed at 12 months and 24 months on this study group.

Introduction Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is an established bariatric procedure. Aim We present our long-term results regarding weight loss and comorbidities during 9 years. Material and methods We calculated the percent excess weight loss (%EWL) and changes in body mass index (ΔBMI). We evaluated arterial hypertension (AHT), type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Results One hundred seventy-nine patients were included (136 female/43 male), mean age of 40.47 ±11.08 years, median preoperative body mass index (BMI) of 42.93 kg/m2. Median follow-up period was 72 months (36–84 months). The %EWL during follow-up was 41.8 (n = 179 patients, at 3-month follow-up), 64.1 (n = 163), 75.33 (n = 134), 77.1 (n = 103), 76,03 (n = 99), 73.78 (n = 64), 71.58 (n = 37), 63.83 (n = 22) and 64.1 (n = 14) at 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 months, respectively. We noted a negative correlation between %EWL and both the age and initial weight and BMI of the patient; a negative correlation between gender (male patients) and %EWL was also found. After LSG, 68.2% of patients with AHT presented resolution (no medication) or significant improvement (doses reduced) of the disease. As regards T2DM, 65.8% described resolution or significant improvement after surgery. Furthermore, 31 (70.4%) patients with preoperative OSAS reported resolution/improvement within a year from surgery. Conclusions Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a safe and effective procedure, with good results in the short and medium term. Long-term follow-up reveals a tendency to weight regain after approximately 2 years from primary surgery, with the need for revisional surgery in some cases.

In this study, the effect of polymers on the mechanical properties of ketoprofen extended drug release systems were studied. Many polymers are added in formulation of compressed tablets in order to improve the physicochemical characteristics of the drug release system. The samples were made in the form of cylindrical tablet about 9 mm in diameter, containing different mixtures of drug substances and excipients acording to seven formulations. Cylindrical tablets containing mixtures of ketoprofen and various types of polymers are made by direct compression method. Among the binders used were a series of different polymers like Kollidon va 64, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose and sodium carboxyl methyl cellulose. Mechanical parameters such as hardness, mechanical strenght, friability and roughness were studied in order to determine how they are influenced by polymeric binders.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health burden, needing comprehensive management for preventing and delaying the progression to advanced CKD. The role of nutritional therapy as a strategy to slow CKD progression and uremia has been recommended for more than a century. Although a consistent body of evidence suggest a benefit of protein restriction therapy, patients’ adherence and compliance have to be considered when prescribing nutritional therapy in advanced CKD patients. Therefore, these prescriptions need to be individualized since some patients may prefer to enjoy their food without restriction, despite knowing the potential importance of dietary therapy in reducing uremic manifestations, maintaining protein-energy status.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) represents a pressing and generally invalidating syndrome that is triggered by a terrifying or stressful experience, relying on recurrently reliving the traumatic event feelings associated to it, which is subsequently linked to ongoing activations of stress-related neurobiological pathways and is often associated with neurodegeneration. In this paper, we examine what lies beneath this disorder, reviewing evidence that connects PTSD with a wide array of mechanisms and its intertwined pathways that can lead to the decompensation of different pathologies, such as cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal ailments, autoimmune disorders, and endocrine diseases. Also, the significance of the oxidative stress in this frame of reference is debated. Thus, knowing and identifying the main features of the distressing experience, the circumstances around it, as well as the neuropsychological and emotional characteristics of people prone to develop PTSD after going through disturbing incidents can offer an opportunity to anticipate the development of potential destructive consequences in several psychological dimensions: cognitive, affective, relational, behavioral, and somatic. We can also observe more closely the intricate connections of the disorder to other pathologies and their underlying mechanisms such as inflammation, oxidative stress, bacterial overgrowth syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, metabolic disorders, oxytocin, and cortisol in order to understand it better and to optimize the course of treatment and its management. The complex foundation PTSD possesses is supported by the existing clinical, preclinical, and experimental data encompassed in the current review. Different biological systems and processes such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, sympathetic nervous system, oxidative stress, inflammation, and microbiome suffer modifications and changes when it comes to PTSD; that is why targeted therapies exert tremendous alleviations of symptoms in patients diagnosed with this disorder. Therefore, this implies that PTSD is not restricted to the psychiatric domain and should be viewed as a systemic condition.

Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were included among high-risk groups for more severe manifestations in case of COVID-19 infection and higher risk of mortality. The current study aims to (1) examine the relationship between death obsession, religiosity, and fear of COVID-19 among type 2 diabetes patients, and (2) assess if religiosity moderates the relationship between death obsession and fear of COVID-19. This cross-sectional online survey involved 306 type 2 diabetes patients. We found that 35.6 % of the participants were overweight and 14.6 % were suffering from obesity. Results showed that death obsession was positively associated with fear of COVID-19 and more religious individuals experience higher levels of fear. The overall level of religiosity did not moderate the relationship between death obsession and fear of COVID-19 but only the preoccupation with God dimension of the religiosity scale. The practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is a common malignant disease of the endocrine system, which has rapidly increased in incidence and prevalence in recent decades. The aim of our paper was to identify correlations between pathological and clinical features of cases of PTMC. A total of 612 patients of both genders, who were operated on for benign thyroid diseases in the 3rd Surgical Unit of St. Spiridon University Hospital of Iasi, were monitored for a period of 2 years. According to pathological reports, PTMC was diagnosed in 144 cases. Of those cases, 81.2% were female and 18.8% were male, with an overall mean age of 54.77 &plusmn, 11.9 years. The mean diameter of tumors was 3.04 &plusmn, 2.2 mm (75.7% were under 5 mm), and 35.4% were multifocal tumors. Of all tumors studied, 76.4% were the follicular variant, 13.2% were conventional, and 10.4% of cases included tall cell, hobnail, or columnar variants. The underlying diseases were multinodular goiters (73.6%), adenomas (25%), Hashimoto thyroiditis (17.4%), Basedow&rsquo, s disease, and other types of hyperthyroidism (4.9%), primarily hyperparathyroidism (7.6%), with a small percentage presenting a combination thereof. Extracapsular invasion was present in 14.6% while 5.6% presented perineural invasion and 0.7% of cases had vascular invasion. Lymphatic emboli were found in 9% of cases and lymph node metastasis in 5.6% of cases. PTMC is not as innocent as believed, and further studies, performed on larger batches, would be necessary in order to identify high oncological risk cases and to determine when a more aggressive surgical approach is indicated.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common digestive condition, representing one of the most frequent reasons for medical examination, especially in pediatric gastroenterology departments. GERD could be associated with biochemical alterations representing either its systemic manifestations or markers of complications. The aim of our paper was to evaluate biochemical parameters secondary to GERD in children. Two hundred and sixty-seven children of both genders aged between 1 month and 18 years who displayed suggestive symptoms for this condition were included in the study and were monitored for a period of 5 years. Depending on the range of symptoms and technical possibilities, the following procedures/investigations were performed: esophageal pH monitoring and imagistic or endoscopic examination, besides specific biochemical investigations. The cohort was sub-divided into two groups: one that included 213 children with confirmed GERD who represented the study group and 54 healthy children where GERD had been excluded, the control group. Out of all the investigated children, 39.0% displayed low hemoglobin values, 43.7% displayed low values of erythrocyte indices (MCH), and 68.5% had increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) values, while increased eosinophil levels were recorded in 46.9% of the cases. Such parameters were proven to be a biomarker of suspected eosinophilic esophagitis, whereas 32.9% of the cases displayed high blood glucose values that could be correlated with gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. Other measured parameters (such as magnesium, aminotransferases and proteins) remained within the normal limits, without statistically significant differences compared to in the control group. This condition is diagnosed based on invasive investigations, which are often difficult to accept by the patients&rsquo, parents. The biochemical modifications correlated to the clinical manifestations can anticipate the progression of the disease, thus limiting the necessity of performing invasive diagnosis tests.
