Solutions based on image analysis are a growing trend towards improving the quality of forest seeds. This study aimed to associate the information obtained through the processing of radiographic images with the physiological potential of Anadenanthera peregrina seeds. Ten seed lots from different mother trees were submitted to automated X-ray analysis to obtain variables related to seed morphology and tissue integrity. Then, the seeds were evaluated for their physiological potential through the variables germination, normal seedlings, germination speed index (GSI), seedling length, uniformity index, and vigor index. The results showed that there was a relationship between the variables obtained with the X-ray analysis and those of the physiological potential of the seeds. Most of the lots with low physiological potential had lower tissue density, circularity, and a higher positive skewness value. The X-ray technique can be considered valid to establish a relationship between the physical and physiological quality of seeds, however, it seems to be more efficient to identify seeds with low physiological potential.

Conservation and recovery of degraded areas generate great demand for seeds of native tree species. The development and/or improvement of efficient techniques for the evaluation of forest-seed quality is important for the production and establishment of high-quality seedlings for restoration. In this study, the tissue density of radiographic images of Senna macranthera seeds was related to their physiological quality. Moreover, biomass, carbon stock, seedling survival, and X-ray technique costs were estimated for S. macranthera. Collected seeds were analyzed using digital radiography to measure relative and integrated density. The physical integrity of seed tissues was visually evaluated. Seeds were then germination tested to assess seedling development-related traits. Semiautomated radiography allowed for visualizing internal seed structures and observing their density and physical-integrity differences as well as physiological quality. Moreover, seed lots with lower relative and integrated densities had more physical damage and/or malformation, thus producing less vigorous seedlings. The average carbon stock was 21.42 kg per tree. The seed selection cost was USD 0.0132/seed at an 81% germination rate. The annual cost of planting S. macranthera seedlings was USD 7500 per hectare during the establishment year and averaged USD 1562 per year for replanting lost transplants over the eight years after initial planting. Applying these techniques may enhance the seedling production of this species, contributing to reforestation programs in Brazil.

The use of multispectral images has great potential to assess seed quality and represents a significant technological advance in the search for fast and non-destructive analysis techniques. However, the devices currently available are expensive. Thus, this study aimed to propose a low-cost method for acquisition and processing of multispectral images of soybean seeds and to evaluate their potential for rapid determination of seed physiological potential. The study was conducted in three steps: implementation of the multispectral image acquisition system, development of an algorithm for automatic image processing, and evaluation of the relationship between the data obtained through image analysis and the results of standard tests used to evaluate seed physiological potential. A total of 43 variables were assessed, eight related to seed physiological potential (germination and vigor) and 35 obtained from the analysis of the multispectral images. Of the variables obtained from multispectral images, 21 were related to pixel values in the images in the different bands evaluated (green, red, and infrared) and 14 associated with seed morphometric characteristics. The proposed system is efficient in obtaining multispectral images and the algorithm developed was efficient to extract morphometric characteristics and pixel information from the images. The parameters obtained from the NIR spectrum region showed a good relationship with the physiological potential of soybean seeds. Soybean seeds are susceptible to field deterioration after reaching physiological maturity, which usually occurs at the R7 stage, with harvest at R8. This study aimed to evaluate the biochemical and physiological changes in seeds of different soybean cultivars submitted to delayed harvest in the field. Seeds of the cultivars NS 5959, BMX Potência, and TMG 1175 were harvested at four times (0, 10, 20, and 30 days after reaching R8). Moisture, germination, first count, accelerated aging, emergence, and tetrazolium tests were performed in each harvest period. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were also evaluated. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design in a 3×4 factorial scheme (three cultivars and four harvest times). A reduction in germination and vigor of seeds of different soybean cultivars was found at R8 + 20 and R8 + 30 days related to field deterioration due to delayed harvest. The seeds of the cultivars did not differ in terms of viability under delayed harvest but differed in terms of antioxidant and physiological responses. Better and worse seed performances were found for the cultivars BMX Potência and TMG 1175, respectively, at R8 and in R8 + 10 days.

Bromeliad Quesnelia quesneliana (Brongniart) L.B. Smith has been reported in the Atlantic Forest, Rainforest, Mesophilic Semideciduous Seasonal Forest, Mangroves and Restingas in the Brazilian southeastern states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, but information about their fruit and seed morphology, and germination is limited. The aim of this study was to characterize the external morphology of fruit and seeds, germination rate and post-seminal stages of Q. quesneliana. Fruits were collected from Restinga area in the Armação dos Búzios city, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The width and length of fruit and seeds (external morphology) were measured, the post-seminal development of the seeds was analyzed and botanical illustrations were made. The indexes t50, uniformity of germination, mean germination time and germination speed coefficient were also calculated. Germination was assessed for 20 days by counting individuals to obtain the post-seminal stages. Ripe Q. quesneliana fruits are pyriform, reddish-brown in color, with light spots, 26 mm long and 10 mm wide, with an average of 148 seeds per fruit and wrapped in a transparent mucilage. The seeds are 2 mm long and 1 mm wide, with epigeal germination, and its seedlings are cryptocotyledonary. The seeds of this species germinate quickly and have no dormancy. RESUMO Bromélia Quesnelia quesneliana (Brongniart) L.B. Smith foi relatada na Mata Atlântica, Floresta Úmida, Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Mesofílica, Manguezais e Restingas nos estados do sudeste brasileiro do Rio de Janeiro e Espírito Santo, mas informações sobre a morfologia de frutos e sementes e germinação são limitadas. O objetivo neste estudo foi caracterizar a morfologia externa dos frutos e sementes, germinação e estádios pós-seminais de Q. quesneliana. Os frutos foram coletados na área da Restinga, município de Armação dos Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A largura e o comprimento dos frutos e sementes (morfologia externa) foram medidos e o desenvolvimento pós-seminal das sementes foi analisado, como também elaboradas ilustrações botânicas. Foram calculados os índices t50, uniformidade de germinação, tempo médio de germinação e coeficiente de velocidade de germinação. A germinação foi avaliada por 20 dias por meio da contagem de indivíduos para obtenção dos estágios pós-seminais. Os frutos maduros da Q. quesneliana são piriformes, de cor marrom-avermelhada, manchas claras, com 26 mm de comprimento e 10 mm de largura na porção mais dilatada, contendo em média 148 sementes, envolvidas por mucilagem transparente. As sementes possuem comprimentos de 2 mm e 1 mm de largura, com germinação do tipo epígea e com plântulas do tipo criptocotiledôneas. As sementes dessa espécie germinam rápido e não possuem dormência.

Weathering deterioration affects seed quality, especially in areas with excessive rainfall. This study aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress, physiological quality, and protein metabolism of seeds of different soybean cultivars under weathering deterioration at the pre-harvest phase. Six soybean cultivars (BMX Apolo, DM 6563, NS 5959, NA 5909, BMX Potência, and TMG 1175) were subjected to simulated rainfall at the R8 stage. Each level was divided into two applications at 72-h intervals: 60 mm (30 + 30), 120 mm (60 + 60), and 180 mm (90 + 90). Then, the seeds were harvested and evaluated for physiological potential, antioxidative enzymes, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, proteins, and protease activity. The simulated rainfall allowed the variation in seed moisture, promoting a significant reduction in germination and seed vigor, especially at 120 and 180 mm levels. There were also reductions in antioxidative enzyme activity with weathering deterioration (mainly for catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase), accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde, and reductions in protein content and protease activity. The proposed rainfall system is efficient in inducing weathering deterioration during the pre-harvest phase and its deleterious effects. Weathering deterioration in the pre-harvest phase impairs high-quality soybean seed production. The performance of several tests to infer seed quality is common in genotype selection, and multivariate statistics can assist in the interpretations. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of the principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) multivariate statistical methods in assessing the tolerance of seeds of different soybean cultivars to weathering deterioration in the pre-harvest phase under greenhouse conditions. Seeds of six soybean cultivars (DM 6563, BMX Apolo, BMX Potência, NA 5909, NS 5959, and TMG 1175) were produced. Different simulated precipitation levels (0, 60, 120, and 180 mm) were applied in the pre-harvest phase. The seeds were collected and assessed for physiological, physical, and biochemical analyses and the data were analyzed by PCA and CDA techniques. The results showed that PCA and CDA are efficient for assessing the tolerance to weathering deterioration in soybean seeds. PCA and CDA assisted in the recommendation of the tests first germination count, accelerated aging, tetrazolium, percentage of seeds with seed coat wrinkling, protein content, and protease activity in the pre-selection of genotypes for weathering deterioration. PCA and CDA also helped to identify the cultivars DM 6563 and BMX Potência as more susceptible and NA 5909 and TMG 1175 as more tolerant to weathering deterioration in the pre-harvest phase. Resumo: A deterioração por umidade na fase de pré-colheita prejudica a obtenção de sementes de soja de alta qualidade. Em seleção de genótipos, é comum a realização de vários testes para inferir sobre qualidade de sementes, sendo que a estatística multivariada pode auxiliar nas interpretações. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência dos métodos de estatística multivariada de componentes principais (PCA) e discriminantes canônicos (CDA) na avaliação da tolerância de sementes de diferentes cultivares de soja à deterioração por umidade na fase de pré-colheita, em condições de casa de vegetação. Foram produzidas sementes de seis cultivares de soja (DM 6563, BMX Apolo, BMX Potência, NA 5909, NS 5959 e TMG 1175). Na fase de pré-colheita, foram aplicados diferentes níveis de precipitação simulada (0, 60, 120 e 180 mm). As sementes foram colhidas e avaliadas quanto a análises fisiológicas, físicas e bioquímicas e os dados obtidos foram analisados pelas técnicas PCA e CDA. Os resultados mostraram que a PCA e a CDA são eficientes para avaliação da tolerância à deterioração por umidade em sementes de soja. Na pré-seleção de genótipos para essa característica, a PCA e a CDA auxiliaram na recomendação dos testes de primeira contagem de germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, tetrazólio, porcentagem de sementes com enrugamento no tegumento, teor de proteínas e atividade da protease. A PCA e a CDA também auxiliaram na identificação das cultivares DM 6563 e BMX Potência como mais suscetíveis e as cultivares NA 5909 e TMG 1175 como mais tolerantes à deterioração por umidade na fase de pré-colheita.

This work aimed to evaluate the physiological and biochemical changes resulting from controlled deterioration in different lots of sunflower seeds. Two sunflower seed lots of the cultivar Hélio 253 were subjected to simulated deterioration, using the accelerated aging test methodology (41 °C and 100% RH) for 0, 48, 72, and 96 h. Then, the seeds were subjected to the tests of germination, first germination count, seedling length and dry matter, emergence, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and total seedling length. The antioxidant activity was evaluated through the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and peroxidase (POX) at 0, 2, 4, and 6 days after sowing. Deterioration caused a reduction in the germination and vigor of the seeds, mainly in the lot with lower initial vigor and for the longest exposure times (72 and 96 h). For both lots, reductions in SOD activity and increases in POX and APX were observed during seed germination, mainly after 48 h of exposure to aging deterioration. Peroxidase enzymes are activated in deteriorated and non-deteriorated sunflower seeds, mainly after two days of germination. RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as alterações fisiológicas e bioquímicas decorrentes da deterioração controlada em diferentes lotes de sementes de girassol. Foram utilizados dois lotes de sementes da cultivar Hélio 253, condicionados à deterioração simulada, utilizando-se a metodologia do teste de envelhecimento acelerado conduzido (41 °C e 100% UR) por 0, 48, 72 e 96 h. Em seguida, as sementes foram submetidas aos testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, comprimento e matéria seca de plântulas, emergência, envelhecimento acelerado e condutividade elétrica. A avaliação da atividade antioxidante foi feita através das enzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), ascorbato peroxidase (APX) e peroxidase (POX) aos 0, 2, 4 e 6 dias após a semeadura. A deterioração provocou redução na germinação e no vigor das sementes, principalmente no lote de menor vigor inicial e nos maiores tempos de exposição (72 e 96 h). Para ambos os lotes, foram observadas reduções da atividade da SOD e aumento da POX e APX durante a germinação das sementes, sobretudo a partir de 48 h de exposição ao envelhecimento. As enzimas peroxidases são ativadas em sementes deterioradas e não deterioradas de girassol, principalmente após dois dias de germinação.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of soil fertilization and texture on leaf Boron (B) accumulation and its relation with wood volume of Corymbia citriodora Hill & Johnson. The experiment was set in randomized block with four replications, four B fertilization levels (0, 1.1, 2.2 and 4.4 g.plant-1) in two soils types (sandy and clayey). To determine leaf B content, 25 leaves were collected from the median portion of four trees for each treatment. Leaves were dried on oven and B content was determined by the Azomethine-H method using extract obtained by dry digestion. The diameter at breast height and the total height of 25 trees were collected in all treatments and wood volume was calculated. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and the means adjusted to regression equations. The regression coefficients were evaluated by t-test at 1 and 5% probability. It was verified that clay soil produces more wood, compared to sandy soil. There was a gain increase in foliar B as B doses increased in both soil types. Leaf B affected Corymbia citriodora productivity only in clay soil.

Soil salinity is one of the main factors limiting the development and global agricultural productivity. Melon (Cucumis melo L.) is mainly produced in arid and semi-arid regions around the world, favoring the accumulation of soluble salts in the soil. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the emergence and vegetative development of melon genotype under different levels of soil salinity. The assessments were performed based on the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) at 0, 20, 25, 30 and 35%. The emergence was affected around 30 percentage points, by comparing the control and the highest dose (35%). The emergence speed and the emergence speed index parameters were also affected in a similar way, as well as the length and dry matter of the shoot. The growth of the plants was also affected by the saline stress, being superior in the control (0%) in relation to the treatments with NaCl. The leaf area increased between weeks 4 and 7 after the planting and was slightly superior in the control in relation to the plants submitted to saline stress (20, 25, 30 and 35% of exchangeable sodium). The melon is more sensible to the saline stress in the seedling emergence than in the vegetative development over time. The development of melon seedlings is mainly affected in exchangeable sodium values superior to 20%. The analyzed hybrid is sensible to the saline stress even in 20% of exchangeable sodium.

Rapid emergence and uniform seedling growth are essential attributes in the production of vegetables such as carrots, whose sowing is direct in the field. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of carrot seed vigor on seedling emergence, plant development, and yield. Four seed lots of carrot, cv. Brasília were characterized for their physiological potential by germination and vigor tests. A field experiment was conducted, where the seeds of each lot were sown in in the field to evaluate seedling emergence at 10 and 14 days, the length of the shoot and root at 30, 45 and 60 days after sowing, the crop growth rate, commercial, non-commercial and commercial total roots yield. Seed vigor significantly affected the seedling emergence and development of carrot plants in the field. The less vigorous lot showed lower final emergence than the most vigorous lots and these negative vigor effects extended to the most advanced stages of plant development. Carrot seed vigor affects seedling emergence and plant growth in the field. Vigorous seeds causes greater emergence, plant height and plant dry matter during the vegetative phase. The use of less vigorous seeds causes yield losses of up to 27%. La rápida aparición y el crecimiento uniforme de las plántulas son atributos esenciales en la producción de cultivos como la zanahoria, cuya siembra es directa en el campo. El experimento se realizó para evaluar el efecto del vigor de semillas de zanahoria en la aparición de las plántulas, en el desarrollo y rendimiento del cultivo. Cuatro lotes de semillas de zanahoria, cv. Brasilia, fueron caracterizados por su potencial fisiológico por pruebas de germinación y vigor. Fue realizado un experimento de campo, en el cual las semillas de cada lote fueron sembradas en el campo para evaluar la aparición de plántulas a los 10 y 14 días, la longitud de la parte aérea y la raíz a los 30, 45 y 60 días después de la siembra, a tasa de crecimiento del cultivo, raíces comerciales, no comerciales y comerciales totales. El vigor de las semillas afectó significativamente la aparición y el desarrollo de plántulas de zanahoria en el campo. El lote menos vigoroso mostró menos emergencia final que los lotes más vigorosos y estos efectos negativos del vigor se extendieron a las etapas más avanzadas del desarrollo de la planta. El vigor de las semillas de zanahoria afecta la emergencia de plántulas y el crecimiento de plantas en el campo. Las semillas vigorosas provocan mayor emergencia, altura de la planta y materia seca de la planta durante la fase vegetativa. El uso de semillas menos vigorosas conduce a pérdidas de rendimiento de hasta un 27%. A rápida emergência e o crescimento uniforme de plântulas são atributos essenciais na produção de culturas como a cenoura, cuja semeadura é direta no campo. O experimento foi conduzido para avaliar o efeito do vigor de sementes de cenoura na emergência de plântulas, no desenvolvimento e no rendimento da cultura. Quatro lotes de sementes de cenoura, cv. Brasília foram caracterizados por seu potencial fisiológico por testes de germinação e vigor. Foi realizado um experimento de campo, no qual as sementes de cada lote foram semeadas no campo para avaliar a emergência de plântulas aos 10 e 14 dias, o comprimento da parte aérea e da raiz aos 30, 45 e 60 dias após a semeadura, a taxa de crescimento da cultura, raízes comerciais, não comerciais e comerciais totais. O vigor das sementes afetou significativamente a emergência e o desenvolvimento de mudas de cenoura no campo. O lote menos vigoroso apresentou menor emergência final do que os lotes mais vigorosos e esses efeitos negativos do vigor se estenderam aos estágios mais avançados do desenvolvimento da planta. O vigor das sementes de cenoura afeta a emergência de plântulas e o crescimento das plantas no campo. Sementes vigorosas ocasionam maior emergência, altura de planta e matéria seca das plantas durante a fase vegetativa. O uso de sementes menos vigorosas acarreta perdas de rendimento de até 27%.

There is little information regarding the germination pattern, seed characterization, and seedling development of Melaleuca alternifolia. This study aimed to determine the ideal temperature for the germination of M. alternifolia seeds, as well as to characterize the seeds and the post-seminal development of the species. Three lots of M. alternifolia seeds were placed to germinate at 20, 25, 20-30, 20-35, 30, and 35 °C, with daily evaluations to determine germination rate, germination speed index (GSI), speed of germination (SG), and mean time for germination of 50% (t50) and 100% (t100) of seeds. The inner morphology of the seeds was evaluated through X-ray images and seedling morphology by photographs. Alternating temperatures (20-30 and 20-35 °C) led to germination rates higher than the other temperatures. The GSI had the lowest values at the constant temperature of 20 °C and the highest values at the constant 30 °C for all the lots. The SG was lowest at a temperature of 20 °C and the highest at the temperature of 35 °C. At alternating temperatures (20-30 and 20-35 °C), t50 was around 5 days and t100 reached 16 days. In conclusion, the alternating temperatures of 20-30 °C and 20-35 °C are recommended for germination of M. alternifolia, and final evaluation can be performed at 16 days after sowing. The inner structures of seeds could be visualized by X-ray analysis, and full seeds could be distinguished from empty seeds and impurities. Seeds exhibit epigeal germination and seedling development is stabilized after 30 days. RESUMO Informações sobre o padrão da germinação e caracterização de sementes e desenvolvimento de plântulas de Melaleuca alternifolia são escassos. Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar a temperatura ideal para a germinação de sementes M. alternifolia, além de caracterizar sementes e o desenvolvimento pós-seminal da espécie. Foram utilizados três lotes de sementes de M. alternifolia colocadas para germinar a 20, 25, 20-30, 20-35, 30 e 35 ºC, com as avaliações diárias para determinação da taxa de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), velocidade de germinação (VG), tempo médio para germinação de 50 (t50) e 100% (t100). A morfologia interna das sementes foi avaliada por meio de imagens de raios X e a das plântulas por meio de fotografias. As temperaturas alternadas (20-30 e 20-35 ºC) proporcionaram taxas de germinação superiores às demais. O IVG apresentou os menores e maiores valores nas temperaturas constantes de 20 e 30 ºC para todos os lotes, respectivamente. O VG foi menor na temperatura de 20 ºC e maior na temperatura de 35 ºC. Nas temperaturas alternadas (20-30 e 20-35 ºC), t50 foi em torno de 5 e t100 atingiu 16 dias. Como conclusão, as temperaturas alternadas de 20-30 e 20-35 ºC são indicadas para a germinação de M. alternifolia, com a avaliação final podendo ser realizada aos 16 dias após a semeadura. A análise de raios-X permitiu visualizar as estruturas internas das sementes e distinguir sementes cheias e sementes vazias e impurezas. A germinação é epígea e as plântulas apresentam estabilização do desenvolvimento após 30 dias.

Global demand for pulses such as the mung bean has grown in the last years. For successful production of these crops it is necessary to use high quality seeds. Methodologies based on X-ray image analysis have been used as a complementary tool to evaluate the physical quality of seeds due to their speed and potential for automation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of X-ray analysis for non-destructive evaluation of the physical quality of Vigna radiata seeds and to relate the variables obtained with their physiological potential. For this, seeds from eight lots were X-rayed and subsequently subject to germination test. In total, 18 physical and physiological parameters were determined. The X-ray image analysis was efficient for evaluating the internal morphology of Vigna radiata seeds and allowed the identification of various damage types. However, it was not possible to relate the physical variables to the seed quality as the lots presented similar germination percentage. Physical variables such as solidity and circularity are related to percentage of root protrusion and length of seedling hypocotyl. Low relative densities indicate deteriorated tissues, related to severe morphological damage and non-viable seeds. A demanda mundial por leguminosas como o feijão mungo tem crescido nos últimos anos. Para o sucesso da produção destas culturas é necessário a utilização de sementes de alta qualidade. Metodologias baseadas na análise de imagens de raios X têm sido utilizadas como ferramenta complementar para avaliação da qualidade física de sementes em função da sua rapidez e potencial de automatização. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência da análise de raios X para avaliação não destrutiva da qualidade física de sementes de Vigna radiata, e relacionar as variáveis obtidas com o seu potencial fisiológico. Para tal, sementes de oito lotes foram radiografadas e submetidas ao teste de germinação. Por meio dessas avaliações foram determinadas 18 variáveis, distribuídas entre físicas e fisiológicas. A análise de imagens de raios X foi eficiente para a avaliação da morfologia interna das sementes Vigna radiata e permitiu a identificação de vários tipos de danos. Porém, não foi possível relacionar as variáveis físicas com a qualidade das sementes, pois os lotes apresentaram porcentagens de germinação semelhantes. Variáveis físicas como solidez e circularidade estão relacionadas com a percentagem de protrusão radicular e o comprimento de hipocótilo das plântulas. Densidades relativas baixas indicam tecidos deteriorados, tendo relação com danos morfológicos graves e sementes inviáveis.

Boron (B) retranslocation may confer greater tolerance to B deficiency or toxicity, resulting in plants and fruits with better nutritional quality. Most plants do not demonstrate phloem mobility for B; however, some plants have natural mobility and others express it under stress conditions, such as nutritional stress. Therefore, we investigated the phloem mobility of B in cherry tomato plants with different nutritional status. The plants were cultivated in nutrient solution with adequate and insufficient doses of Potassium (K) and B. Furthermore, the plants received foliar fertilization with B in a mature leaf (F) in a localized form. The B content and amount in leaves near F were compared with leaves of the same age and position on control plants. The experiment was carried out in a protected environment and conducted in a randomized complete block design in a subdivided plot scheme with four replicates. Re-translocation of B between neighboring leaves was observed when the plant was without K deficiency and with B deficiency. In this nutritional status, leaves next to fertilized leaf with B (F) showed higher B amount when compared to leaves of the same position of control plants. Evidence suggests that retranslocation of B over relatively short distances (between leaves) can be influenced by the nutritional status the cherry tomato plants. A retranslocação de Boro (B) pode conferir maior tolerância à deficiência ou toxidez de B, resultando em plantas e frutos com melhor qualidade nutricional. A maioria das plantas não demonstra mobilidade floemática para o B, contudo, algumas plantas possuem mobilidade natural e outras a expressam sob condições de estresse, como o estresse nutricional. Nesse sentido, foi investigada a mobilidade floemática do B em plantas de tomate cereja com diferentes status nutricionais. As plantas foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva com doses adequada e insuficiente de Potássio (K) e B. Adicionalmente, as plantas receberam, de forma localizada, fertilização foliar com B em uma folha madura (F). Os teores e os conteúdos de B nas folhas vizinhas a F foram comparados com folhas de mesma idade e posição de plantas controle. O experimento foi realizado em ambiente protegido e conduzido no delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas com quatro repetições. Evidenciou-se retranslocação de B entre folhas vizinhas quando a planta estava sem deficiência de K e com deficiência de B. Neste status nutricional, as folhas vizinhas à folha aplicada (F) apresentaram maiores teores e conteúdos de B quando comparadas às folhas de mesma posição das plantas controle. As evidências sugerem que a retranslocação de B em distâncias relativamente curtas (entre folhas) pode ser influenciada pelo status nutricional de plantas de tomate cereja.

Post-harvest storage of fleshy fruit is a strategy used for improving seed quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate post-harvest storage of the fruit of C. baccatum var. baccatum (cumari pepper) and relate it to antioxidant enzyme activity and seed physiological potential. Red-colored fruit (65 days after anthesis) was gathered and stored at 20 °C for 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 days. The seeds were removed and evaluated for moisture content, physiological quality, antioxidant enzyme activity, and protein content. The means were fitted to regression equations and then passed through multivariate analysis (PCA). Seed moisture and 100-seed weight decreased through post-harvest storage. The 5- and 10-days storage periods led to an increase in the germination. Electrical conductivity was greater for the 0- and 20-day storage periods. Dry matter and protein increased in the 5- and 10-days. Enzymes exhibited reductions of activity comparing 0 and 20 days. The post-harvest storage of C. baccatum fruit for 5 and 10 days improves seed physiological potential and is related to physiological maturity. The incomplete maturation of cumari seeds obtained from unstored fruit (0 days) is related to greater enzyme activity, greater oxidative stress, and low germination and vigor. The lack of post-harvest storage of fruit and storage of fruit for longer than 10 days contributes to a lower physiological potential of cumari pepper seeds. Resumo: O armazenamento pós-colheita de frutos carnosos é uma estratégia usada para melhorar a qualidade das sementes. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o armazenamento pós-colheita de frutos de C. baccatum var. baccatum (pimenta cumari) e relacioná-lo à atividade de enzimas antioxidantes e ao potencial fisiológico das sementes. Frutos de cor vermelha (65 dias após a antese) foram colhidos e armazenados a 20 °C por 0, 5, 10, 15 e 20 dias. As sementes foram removidas e avaliadas quanto ao grau de umidade, qualidade fisiológica, atividade de enzimas antioxidantes e conteúdo de proteínas. As médias foram ajustadas às equações de regressão e depois avaliadas por análise multivariada (PCA). A umidade e o peso de 100 sementes diminuíram com o armazenamento pós-colheita. Os períodos de armazenamento de 5 e 10 dias levaram a um aumento na germinação. A condutividade elétrica foi maior nos períodos de armazenamento de 0 e 20 dias. A matéria seca e o teor de proteína aumentaram aos 5 e 10 dias. As enzimas exibiram reduções de atividade comparando 0 e 20 dias. O armazenamento pós-colheita de frutos de C. baccatum por 5 e 10 dias melhora o potencial fisiológico das sementes e está relacionado à maturidade fisiológica. A maturação incompleta de sementes de cumari obtidas a partir de frutos não armazenados (0 dias), está relacionada a maior atividade enzimática, maior estresse oxidativo e baixa germinação e vigor. O não armazenamento pós-colheita dos frutos e o armazenamento por mais de 10 dias contribui para o menor potencial fisiológico de sementes de pimenta cumari.

The application of brassinosteroids (BR) is associated with increased tolerance to various stresses such as those induced by pathogens, temperature, salinity and drought. Here, we studied the influence of BRs analogues on the leaf senescence of papaya juvenile plants. The objective was to determine whether BRs affect plant growth and leaf senescence by promoting or inhibiting the degradation of chlorophyll and/or leaf abscission. Two-month-old plants were divided into five treatments: C (control without BR application); BRWC (BR applied in the whole canopy); BRL1 (BR applied in the youngest fully expanded leaf, L1); BRL2 (BR applied in L2 which is the secondly more mature leaf in relation to L1) and BRL3 (BR applied in L3 which is the third more mature leaf in relation to L2). We concluded that BRs do not interfere with the senescence of the youngest leaf (L1) but in older leaves (L3) BRWC maintains the leaves greener and attached to the plant for a longer time when compared to the leaves from the other treatments. BR application in whole-canopy increased the plant height, and it caused a delay in leaf senescence and, consequently, in leaf abscission. In addition, hyponastic leaves developed after BR-application in the whole-canopy. The senescence process and leaf abscission in papaya, stimulated by exogenous BRs, were directly related to leaf age.

Allelopathy is an important mechanism by which plants release allelochemicals. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the allelopathic effect of extracts of fruit tree leaves (orange, mango, jabuticaba and guava trees) on the germination and seedling development of different weeds (morning glory and beggartick) and vegetable crops (lettuce and cabbage). The FGC and G were evaluated. After germination, SDM and SL were measured. In general, first germination counting (FGC) and G (germination) were decreased for all species conducted with the allelopathic extracts in relation to the control. Mango extract reduced the FGC of morning glory in 20 p.p.m. The G of beggartick reduced to 0%, while cabbage and lettuce germination was not affected. The highest reduction on FGC was observed in lettuce using jabuticaba extract, usinf 9 p.p.m, compared to the control. The extracts reduced the G of morning glory and beggartick, respectively, in between 5 and 11 p.p. Jabuticaba extract reduced significantly the G of morning glory and beggartick. The development of morning glory and beggartick was negatively affected by allelopathic extracts. The G of morning glory and beggartick is affected by the jabuticaba extract. The development of cabbage seedling was affected when all extracts were used and guava extract affected the length of cabbage seedlings. Mango extract has potential to control morning glory and beggartick in established lettuce and cabbage fields. Mango, orange, jabuticaba and guava extracts have the potential to control weeds on lettuce established fields. Guava extract is not indicated to control weeds on cabbage cultivated fields.

The effects of NO donors on germination under saline stress have been much investigated for many species, however, there are reports that the effect caused by donors are effects of cyanide present. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on germination, antioxidative system and lipid peroxidation of Senna macranthera seeds under saline stress. The osmotic potentials of -0.4 and -0.5 MPa of NaCl were used, as well as the concentration of 100 μM of sodium nitroprusside, inactive sodium nitroprusside. Germination rate, imbibition curves, antioxidant enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation, and protein content were evaluated. Similar effects were observed for sodium nitroprusside and inactive sodium nitroprusside, indicating that these effects were related to the release of the cyanide present in sodium nitroprusside. The sodium nitroprusside (SNP) improves the germination of Senna macranthera seeds under salt stress conditions, through release of cyanide. The cyanide favored germination, reducing lipid peroxidation and increasing the activity of the antioxidant enzymes. Resumo: Os efeitos dos doadores de NO na germinação sob estresse salino têm sido muito investigados para muitas espécies, entretanto, há relatos de que o efeito causado pelos doadores são efeitos do cianeto presente. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos do SNP na germinação, no sistema antioxidativo e na peroxidação lipídica de sementes de Senna macranthera sob estresse salino. Foram utilizados os potenciais osmóticos de -0,4 e -0,5 MPa de NaCl, e a concentração de 100 μM de nitroprussiato de sódio, nitroprussiato de sódio inativo. A taxa de germinação, as curvas de embebição, a atividade das enzimas antioxidantes, a peroxidação lipídica e o teor de proteína foram analisados. Efeitos semelhantes foram observados para o nitroprussiato de sódio e o nitroprussiato de sódio inativo, indicando que os efeitos foram relacionados à liberação do cianeto presente no nitroprussiato de sódio. O SNP favoreceu a germinação das sementes de Senna macranthera sob estresse salino devido à liberação de cianeto. O cianeto foi benéfico para a germinação reduzindo a peroxidação lipídica e aumentando a atividade das enzimas antioxidantes.

Aim of study: To assess the potential of automated X-ray image analysis to evaluate the physical characteristics of Jatropha curcas seeds, and to relate the parameters obtained with the physiological quality of the seeds harvested at different maturity stages.Area of study: Experimental area of Agronomy Department, Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), Brazil.Material and methods: The fruits were harvested from 20 plants, based on the external skin color (green, yellow, brownish-yellow and brown). The study was performed by automated and visual analysis of radiographic images of the seeds, in which measurements of tissue integrity, density and seed filling were performed. Seed dry matter, germination and seedling growth were also analysed.Main results: Variables obtained through automated analysis of radiographic images correlated significantly with all physiological variables (r > 0.9), as well as visual image evaluations (r > 0.75). The seeds extracted from green fruits presented lower tissue integrity and lower physiological quality. Radiographic analysis was efficient for monitoring J. curcas seed quality at different maturity stages. Morpho-anatomical parameters obtained from X-ray analysis were highly correlated with seed physiological attributes.Research highlights: It is important to develop and improve methodologies based on lower-cost techniques, such as X-ray analysis. In this context, we verified that X-ray images can be used for monitoring J. curcas seed filling and maturation. Radiographic images of seeds can be analyzed automatically with ImageJ software. Internal morphology and physical characteristics of seeds have relationship with their physiological quality.
