The increased cultivation of highbush blueberry in Poland has been paralleled with enhanced damage to this crop by different pests and diseases, including soft scales. We have carried out trials to assess methods for controlling soft scales of the genus Parthenolecanium in highbush blueberry grown in open fields or under a plastic tunnel, with an approach based on integrated pest management (IPM) principles. The reduction of Lecanium scale population using alternative products, with mechanical mechanisms of action, was similar to that achieved with treatments of different formulations of neonicotinyl-based pesticides; sometimes they were even more effective on protected crops. Control programs on plantations with a large population of Lecanium scales based on the application of these alternative products in spring and at harvest time and chemical compounds in autumn resulted in a very high efficacy and are considered the most suitable strategies to assure yields without residues and a reduced impact on the environment.

Abstract Background We aimed to improve the image quality (IQ) of sparse-view computed tomography (CT) images using a U-Net for lung metastasis detection and determine the best tradeoff between number of views, IQ, and diagnostic confidence. Methods CT images from 41 subjects aged 62.8 ± 10.6 years (mean ± standard deviation, 23 men), 34 with lung metastasis, 7 healthy, were retrospectively selected (2016–2018) and forward projected onto 2,048-view sinograms. Six corresponding sparse-view CT data subsets at varying levels of undersampling were reconstructed from sinograms using filtered backprojection with 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 views. A dual-frame U-Net was trained and evaluated for each subsampling level on 8,658 images from 22 diseased subjects. A representative image per scan was selected from 19 subjects (12 diseased, 7 healthy) for a single-blinded multireader study. These slices, for all levels of subsampling, with and without U-Net postprocessing, were presented to three readers. IQ and diagnostic confidence were ranked using predefined scales. Subjective nodule segmentation was evaluated using sensitivity and Dice similarity coefficient (DSC); clustered Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used. Results The 64-projection sparse-view images resulted in 0.89 sensitivity and 0.81 DSC, while their counterparts, postprocessed with the U-Net, had improved metrics (0.94 sensitivity and 0.85 DSC) (p = 0.400). Fewer views led to insufficient IQ for diagnosis. For increased views, no substantial discrepancies were noted between sparse-view and postprocessed images. Conclusions Projection views can be reduced from 2,048 to 64 while maintaining IQ and the confidence of the radiologists on a satisfactory level. Relevance statement Our reader study demonstrates the benefit of U-Net postprocessing for regular CT screenings of patients with lung metastasis to increase the IQ and diagnostic confidence while reducing the dose. Key points • Sparse-projection-view streak artifacts reduce the quality and usability of sparse-view CT images. • U-Net-based postprocessing removes sparse-view artifacts while maintaining diagnostically accurate IQ. • Postprocessed sparse-view CTs drastically increase radiologists’ confidence in diagnosing lung metastasis. The cardiac IKs ion channel comprises KCNQ1, calmodulin, and KCNE1 in a dodecameric complex which provides a repolarizing current reserve at higher heart rates and protects from arrhythmia syndromes that cause fainting and sudden death. Pharmacological activators of IKs are therefore of interest both scientifically and therapeutically for treatment of IKs loss-of-function disorders. One group of chemical activators are only active in the presence of the accessory KCNE1 subunit and here we investigate this phenomenon using molecular modeling techniques and mutagenesis scanning in mammalian cells. A generalized activator binding pocket is formed extracellularly by KCNE1, the domain-swapped S1 helices of one KCNQ1 subunit and the pore/turret region made up of two other KCNQ1 subunits. A few residues, including K41, A44 and Y46 in KCNE1, W323 in the KCNQ1 pore, and Y148 in the KCNQ1 S1 domain, appear critical for the binding of structurally diverse molecules, but in addition, molecular modeling studies suggest that induced fit by structurally different molecules underlies the generalized nature of the binding pocket. Activation of IKs is enhanced by stabilization of the KCNQ1-S1/KCNE1/pore complex, which ultimately slows deactivation of the current, and promotes outward current summation at higher pulse rates. Our results provide a mechanistic explanation of enhanced IKs currents by these activator compounds and provide a map for future design of more potent therapeutically useful molecules.

The optomotor response (OMR) is central to the locomotory behavior in diverse animal species including insects, fish and mammals. Furthermore, the study of the OMR in larval zebrafish has become a key model system for investigating the neural basis of sensorimotor control. However, a comprehensive understanding of the underlying control algorithms is still outstanding. In fish it is often assumed that the OMR, by reducing average optic flow across the retina, serves to stabilize position with respect to the ground. Yet the degree to which this is achieved, and how it could emerge from the intermittent burst dynamics of larval zebrafish swimming, are unclear. Here, we combine detailed computational modeling with a new approach to free-swimming experiments in which we control the amount of visual feedback produced by a given motor effort by varying the height of the larva above a moving grid stimulus. We develop an account of underlying feedback control mechanisms that describes both the bout initiation process and the control of swim speed during bouts. We observe that the degree to which fish stabilize their position is only partial and height-dependent, raising questions about its function. We find the relative speed profile during bouts follows a fixed temporal pattern independent of absolute bout speed, suggesting that bout speed and bout termination are not separately controlled. We also find that the reverse optic flow, experienced when the fish is swimming faster than the stimulus, plays a minimal role in control of the OMR despite carrying most of the sensory information about self-movement. These results shed new light on the underlying dynamics of the OMR in larval zebrafish and will be crucial for future work aimed at identifying the neural basis of this behavior.

Introduction:. We describe a reliable approach for double nerve transfer of the medial triceps branch and thoracodorsal nerve to the axillary nerve to increase axonal input. We present a review of outcomes for both end-to-end and reverse end-to-side nerve transfer. Methods:. A retrospective review of patients who underwent nerve transfer for improvement of shoulder abduction at Harborview Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital between 2012 and 2021 was conducted. Patients were prospectively contacted to fill out a 30 item Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire, with an option to upload a video demonstrating active range of motion. Results:. Twenty-one patients with 23 affected extremities were included in the final analysis. Fifteen patients completed the prospective arm of the study (71% response rate). Seventy-nine percent of patient limbs achieved a Medical Research Council Motor Scale (MRC-MS) of 4 or greater, and measured shoulder abduction active range of motion (AROM) was 139.2 degrees (range, 29–174 degrees) and 140.9 degrees (range, 60–180 degrees) (P = 0.95) for end-to-end and reverse end-to-side, respectively. Comparing end-to-end with reverse end-to-side neurorrhaphy, outcomes, including follow-up, mean postoperative MRC-MS, mean change in MRC-MS, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand, abduction AROM, and flexion AROM, were not statistically different. Conclusions:. We showed improvements in shoulder abduction with the thoracodorsal nerve, in addition to the medial triceps branch, to increase axonal donation and power the axillary nerve without sacrificing the spinal accessory nerve. Furthermore, we demonstrated improvements with reverse end-to-side coaptation when intraoperative stimulation of the axillary nerve revealed residual function.

Abstract We present a method to generate synthetic thorax radiographs with realistic nodules from CT scans, and a perfect ground truth knowledge. We evaluated the detection performance of nine radiologists and two convolutional neural networks in a reader study. Nodules were artificially inserted into the lung of a CT volume and synthetic radiographs were obtained by forward-projecting the volume. Hence, our framework allowed for a detailed evaluation of CAD systems’ and radiologists’ performance due to the availability of accurate ground-truth labels for nodules from synthetic data. Radiographs for network training (U-Net and RetinaNet) were generated from 855 CT scans of a public dataset. For the reader study, 201 radiographs were generated from 21 nodule-free CT scans with altering nodule positions, sizes and nodule counts of inserted nodules. Average true positive detections by nine radiologists were 248.8 nodules, 51.7 false positive predicted nodules and 121.2 false negative predicted nodules. The best performing CAD system achieved 268 true positives, 66 false positives and 102 false negatives. Corresponding weighted alternative free response operating characteristic figure-of-merits (wAFROC FOM) for the radiologists range from 0.54 to 0.87 compared to a value of 0.81 (CI 0.75–0.87) for the best performing CNN. The CNN did not perform significantly better against the combined average of the 9 readers (p = 0.49). Paramediastinal nodules accounted for most false positive and false negative detections by readers, which can be explained by the presence of more tissue in this area.

Abstract The voltage-dependent potassium channel Kv1.3 participates in the immune response. Kv1.3 is essential in different cellular functions, such as proliferation, activation and apoptosis. Because aberrant expression of Kv1.3 is linked to autoimmune diseases, fine-tuning its function is crucial for leukocyte physiology. Regulatory KCNE subunits are expressed in the immune system, and KCNE4 specifically tightly regulates Kv1.3. KCNE4 modulates Kv1.3 currents slowing activation, accelerating inactivation and retaining the channel at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), thereby altering its membrane localization. In addition, KCNE4 genomic variants are associated with immune pathologies. Therefore, an in-depth knowledge of KCNE4 function is extremely relevant for understanding immune system physiology. We demonstrate that KCNE4 dimerizes, which is unique among KCNE regulatory peptide family members. Furthermore, the juxtamembrane tetraleucine carboxyl-terminal domain of KCNE4 is a structural platform in which Kv1.3, Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM) and dimerizing KCNE4 compete for multiple interaction partners. CaM-dependent KCNE4 dimerization controls KCNE4 membrane targeting and modulates its interaction with Kv1.3. KCNE4, which is highly retained at the ER, contains an important ER retention motif near the tetraleucine motif. Upon escaping the ER in a CaM-dependent pattern, KCNE4 follows a COP-II-dependent forward trafficking mechanism. Therefore, CaM, an essential signaling molecule that controls the dimerization and membrane targeting of KCNE4, modulates the KCNE4-dependent regulation of Kv1.3, which in turn fine-tunes leukocyte physiology.

Abstract The voltage-dependent potassium channel Kv1.3 plays essential roles in the immune system, participating in leukocyte activation, proliferation and apoptosis. The regulatory subunit KCNE4 acts as an ancillary peptide of Kv1.3, modulates K+ currents and controls channel abundance at the cell surface. KCNE4-dependent regulation of the oligomeric complex fine-tunes the physiological role of Kv1.3. Thus, KCNE4 is crucial for Ca2+-dependent Kv1.3-related leukocyte functions. To better understand the role of KCNE4 in the regulation of the immune system, we manipulated its expression in various leukocyte cell lines. Jurkat T lymphocytes exhibit low KCNE4 levels, whereas CY15 dendritic cells, a model of professional antigen-presenting cells, robustly express KCNE4. When the cellular KCNE4 abundance was increased in T cells, the interaction between KCNE4 and Kv1.3 affected important T cell physiological features, such as channel rearrangement in the immunological synapse, cell growth, apoptosis and activation, as indicated by decreased IL-2 production. Conversely, ablation of KCNE4 in dendritic cells augmented proliferation. Furthermore, the LPS-dependent activation of CY15 cells, which induced Kv1.3 but not KCNE4, increased the Kv1.3-KCNE4 ratio and increased the expression of free Kv1.3 without KCNE4 interaction. Our results demonstrate that KCNE4 is a pivotal regulator of the Kv1.3 channelosome, which fine-tunes immune system physiology by modulating Kv1.3-associated leukocyte functions.

Abstract Background Diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis poses a dilemma to physicians due to nonspecific symptoms like abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and a change in bowel habit. In particular, the distinction between inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal tuberculosis remains challenging. Case presentation A 27-year-old man from Colombia presented with fever, night sweats, and progressive lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a thickening of the bowel wall with a mesenterial lymphadenopathy, ascites ,and a pleural tumor mass. Histology of intestinal and pleural biopsy specimens showed a granulomatous inflammation. Although microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) were negative, empirical MTB treatment was initiated on suspicion. Due to a massive post-stenotic atrophied intestinal bowel, MTB medications were administered parenterally in the initial phase of treatment to guarantee adequate systemic resorption. The complicated and critical further course included an intra-abdominal abscess and bowel perforation requiring a split stoma, before the patient could be discharged in good condition after 3 months of in-hospital care. Conclusions This case highlights the clinical complexity and diagnostic challenges of intestinal MTB infection. A multidisciplinary team of physicians should be sensitized to a timely diagnosis of this disease, which often mimics inflammation similar to inflammatory bowel disease, other infections, or malignancies. In our case, radiological findings, histological results, and migratory background underpinned the suspected diagnosis and allowed early initiation of tuberculostatic treatment.

Uno de los procesos más interesantes que se puede documentar por medio de la participación de los Gobiernos japoneses en las exposiciones universales de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX es el papel que tenía en las relaciones internacionales el peso de la tradición cultural de cada nación manifestada a través de obras artísticas. Japón entendió muy pronto este aspecto de la política internacional y progresivamente configuró un discurso propio sobre la historia del arte japonés estableciendo una delimitación con las interpretaciones que desde Occidente se hacía de la misma. En este artículo se intentará observar las diferentes circunstancias de participación por parte de Japón en estas efemérides prestando especial atención a aquellos documentos o acciones que las autoridades japonesas publicaron o realizaron para dar a conocer su patrimonio. La mejora de las condiciones materiales de Japón repercutió especialmente en su representación en estas, pero desde un principio existió la apuesta por participar siempre en estos eventos. Se evidencia así la prioridad para el Gobierno japonés de ser visto en compañía del resto de las naciones y, a ser posible, de las potencias más desarrolladas. La razón última de esta perenne necesidad de retratarse continuamente frente al mundo radica en la insistencia del resto de potencias desarrolladas occidentales de emplazar el papel de Japón dentro del mundo en una categoría inferior, menos desarrollada y que consideraba, por ende, su arte en la misma posición de inferioridad. Dentro de esta evolución, la participación en la Exposición Colombina de Chicago del año 1893 marca un hito al ser la primera ocasión en que se expone a un público extranjero un discurso consistente e hilado de una historia del arte japonés materializado en un pabellón arquitectónico considerado uno de los puntos álgidos de su producción artística. Se daba el primer paso para un definitivo viraje en la posesión del conocimiento y articulación sobre el arte japonés que se consolidaría en la Exposición Universal de París de 1900.

ObjectivesMultiple studies show orthopedic health problems for medical staff due to wearing radiation protection aprons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the weight pressure on the shoulder as a marker of physical strain caused by different radiation-protection devices.MethodsFor the weight pressure measurement, a pressure sensor (OMD-30-SE-100N, OptoForce, Budapest, Hungary) placed on the left and right shoulder was used. Wearing different radiation protection systems the force measurement system was used to quantify the weight pressure. Measurements were acquired in still standing position and during various movements.ResultsA mean significant decreasing weight pressure on the shoulder between 74% and 84% (pConclusionsThe free-hanging radiation protection system showed a significant lower weight pressure in comparison to the other radiation protection devices. Apart from this, use of a two-piece radiation protection apron or addition of a belt to a radiation protection coat proved to be further effective options to reduce weight pressure.

The success of deep learning in recent years has arguably been driven by the availability of large datasets for training powerful predictive algorithms. In medical applications however, the sensitive nature of the data limits the collection and exchange of large-scale datasets. Privacy-preserving and collaborative learning systems can enable the successful application of machine learning in medicine. However, collaborative protocols such as federated learning require the frequent transfer of parameter updates over a network. To enable the deployment of such protocols to a wide range of systems with varying computational performance, efficient deep learning architectures for resource-constrained environments are required. Here we present MoNet, a small, highly optimized neural-network-based segmentation algorithm leveraging efficient multi-scale image features. MoNet is a shallow, U-Net-like architecture based on repeated, dilated convolutions with decreasing dilation rates. We apply and test our architecture on the challenging clinical tasks of pancreatic segmentation in computed tomography (CT) images as well as brain tumor segmentation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. We assess our model's segmentation performance and demonstrate that it provides performance on par with compared architectures while providing superior out-of-sample generalization performance, outperforming larger architectures on an independent validation set, while utilizing significantly fewer parameters. We furthermore confirm the suitability of our architecture for federated learning applications by demonstrating a substantial reduction in serialized model storage requirement as a surrogate for network data transfer. Finally, we evaluate MoNet's inference latency on the central processing unit (CPU) to determine its utility in environments without access to graphics processing units. Our implementation is publicly available as free and open-source software.

The voltage-gated potassium channel Kv1.3 plays a crucial role during the immune response. The channel forms oligomeric complexes by associating with several modulatory subunits. KCNE4, one of the five members of the KCNE family, binds to Kv1.3, altering channel activity and membrane expression. The association of KCNEs with Kv channels is the subject of numerous studies, and the stoichiometry of such associations has led to an ongoing debate. The number of KCNE4 subunits that can interact and modulate Kv1.3 is unknown. KCNE4 transfers important elements to the Kv1.3 channelosome that negatively regulate channel function, thereby fine-tuning leukocyte physiology. The aim of this study was to determine the stoichiometry of the functional Kv1.3-KCNE4 complex. We demonstrate that as many as four KCNE4 subunits can bind to the same Kv1.3 channel, indicating a variable Kv1.3-KCNE4 stoichiometry. While increasing the number of KCNE4 subunits steadily slowed the activation of the channel and decreased the abundance of Kv1.3 at the cell surface, the presence of a single KCNE4 peptide was sufficient for the cooperative enhancement of the inactivating function of the channel. This variable architecture, which depends on KCNE4 availability, differentially affects Kv1.3 function. Therefore, our data indicate that the physiological remodeling of KCNE4 triggers functional consequences for Kv1.3, thus affecting cell physiology.

Durante el período Meiji la ciudad de Kioto, tras la pérdida de su capitalidad, se enfrentó al reto de competir frente a la nueva capital, Tokio, también con el traslado del emperador y su séquito a la región de Kantō. Una de las estrategias que usó para relanzar su actividad fue la organización de diferentes actividades industriales y de ingeniería civil que transformaron los modos de vida de sus ciudadanos. La segunda estrategia, que sus élites culturales y políticas promovieron al hilo de las políticas de construcción de una nación-estado, fue la configuración simbólica de la ciudad y sus alrededores como el origen espiritual del país. Una ciudad que había preservado durante decenas de generaciones los valores e ideales que configuraban lo que significaba ser japonés. La materialización de estas políticas tuvo en los viajes a los monumentos de la capital por parte de los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria un buen ejemplo, y logró al mismo tiempo educar a los ciudadanos del posterior imperio japonés estableciendo un imaginario colectivo del pasado nacional. Guías de viaje y libros sobre los lugares imprescindibles en las visitas a la ciudad serían algo habitual en el período Taishō cuando la ciudad se había convertido ya en el destino preferente de los visitantes nacionales y foráneos, y la imagen de Kioto como el repositorio de la nación, se había visto completada.

Theoretical models were tested using structural equation modeling to evaluate the interrelations among cognitive motivational variables and academic achievement using a sample of 128 predominately Hispanic pre-service teachers enrolled in two undergraduate educational psychology classes. Data were gathered using: (1) a quantitative questionnaire to assess personal control, internal causality, self-efficacy, mastery goal orientation, and final course grade and (2) a problem-solving activity to identify engagement style: action- or process-oriented. The proposed theoretical model produced a poor model fit and thus a modified model was forwarded that directly linked self-efficacy with final course grade rather then mediated by mastery goal orientation. Results supported the modified model and suggested that the cognitive motivational variables under investigation played important roles in predicting students’ grades, with self-efficacy acting as the mediator between both internal causality and personal control and students’ final course grade. This study also demonstrated that the modified model was relatively invariant across gender, ethnicity, and engagement style. Implications for both teacher educators and teachers for understanding the complex links between cognitive motivational variables and academic achievement with a predominately Hispanic sample are discussed.

¿Cuáles son los determinantes del comercio exterior provincial argentino? ¿Qué factores son los que determinan cuánto, qué, a qué precio y a dónde exportan las provincias argentinas? ¿Cuál es el rol de la dotación de factores productivos, como capital, mano de obra o recursos naturales, con los que cuenta cada provincia? ¿Qué papel cumplen políticas públicas como la provisión de infraestructura y el comportamiento fiscal a la hora de determinar el patrón del comercio provincial? ¿Cuál fue el impacto de la inversión extranjera directa sobre el patrón de exportaciones de las provincias? Este trabajo tiene como objetivo brindar un principio de respuesta a este conjunto de interrogantes.
