Sheet metal forming processes are widely used in applications such as those in the automotive or aerospace industries. Among them, punching is of great interest due to its high productivity and low operating cost. However, it is necessary to optimize these processes and adjust their parameters, such as clearance, shear force or tool geometry, to obtain the best finishes and minimize crack generation. Thus, the main objective of this research work is to optimize the punching process to achieve parts that do not require subsequent processes, such as deburring, by controlling the properties of the starting materials and with the help of tools such as design of experiments and simulations. In the present study, tensile tests were performed on three steels with different compositions and three sample geometries. The information obtained from these tests has allowed us to determine the parameters of the Johnson–Cook damage criteria. Moreover, punching was performed on real parts and compared with simulations to analyze the percentage of burnish surface. The results obtained show that the methodology used was correct and that it can be extrapolated to other types of die-cutting processes by reducing the percentage of surface fractures and predicting the appearance of cracks. Furthermore, it was observed that clearance has a greater influence than processing speed, while the minimum percentage of the burnish area was observed for the minimum values of clearance.

The availability of models constitutes a key factor when selecting a decision support tool aimed at improving the production and environmental aspects of farms. There is a need for robust models that are user-friendly, facilitating the estimation of farm emissions and the analysis of their temporal fluctuations. The objectives of this study were i) to calculate both the partial (PCF) and total carbon (TCF) footprints of 212 dairy farms, distinguishing those with and without maize cultivation; ii) to identify critical variables related to feed, nutrition, productivity and environmental efficiency; and iii) to formulate and validate prediction equations based on available data from dairy farms. The database encompasses information from 212 dairy cattle farms situated in the temperate-humid zone of northern Spain, spanning the period from 2014 to 2018. Farm classification was based on the presence (CcMz) or absence (ScCMz) of maize cultivation for silage production, resulting in 96 farms in the CcMz category and 116 farms in the ScCMz category.Among the variables considered, the variable herd N-use efficiency (NUECR) for (PCF) showed the lowest root mean square error of prediction at 0.39% and the correspondingly lowest root men. The root mean squared percentage error (RMSPE): standard deviation ratio (RSR) at 0.52. In the case of total carbon footprint (TCF), herd N-use efficiency (NUECR) again showed the lowest root mean square error of prediction at 0.52%. Regarding TCF, herd feed efficiency (EACR) was the variable with the lowest both RMSPE and RSR, with 0.65 and 0.64, respectively. Consequently, the estimation of the PCF and TCF of 1 ​kg of milk from the temperate-humid zone of northern Spain at the farm gate can be feasibly accomplished utilizing NUECR and EACR, respectively.

Abstract Background Risk factors for nosocomial COVID-19 outbreaks continue to evolve. The aim of this study was to investigate a multi-ward nosocomial outbreak of COVID-19 between 1st September and 15th November 2020, occurring in a setting without vaccination for any healthcare workers or patients. Methods Outbreak report and retrospective, matched case–control study using incidence density sampling in three cardiac wards in an 1100-bed tertiary teaching hospital in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Patients were confirmed/probable COVID-19 cases and contemporaneous control patients without COVID-19. COVID-19 outbreak definitions were based on Public Health guidelines. Clinical and environmental specimens were tested by RT-PCR and as applicable quantitative viral cultures and whole genome sequencing were conducted. Controls were inpatients on the cardiac wards during the study period confirmed to be without COVID-19, matched to outbreak cases by time of symptom onset dates, age within ± 15 years and were admitted in hospital for at least 2 days. Demographics, Braden Score, baseline medications, laboratory measures, co-morbidities, and hospitalization characteristics were collected on cases and controls. Univariate and multivariate conditional logistical regression was used to identify independent risk factors for nosocomial COVID-19. Results The outbreak involved 42 healthcare workers and 39 patients. The strongest independent risk factor for nosocomial COVID-19 (IRR 3.21, 95% CI 1.47–7.02) was exposure in a multi-bedded room. Of 45 strains successfully sequenced, 44 (97.8%) were B.1.128 and differed from the most common circulating community lineages. SARS-CoV-2 positive cultures were detected in 56.7% (34/60) of clinical and environmental specimens. The multidisciplinary outbreak team observed eleven contributing events to transmission during the outbreak. Conclusions Transmission routes of SARS-CoV-2 in hospital outbreaks are complex; however multi-bedded rooms play a significant role in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Online large-group teaching (OLGT), employed to reach a large group of learners in separate physical locations, allows asynchronous learning and facilitates social distancing. While online large-groups can be a powerful and resource-lean means of health professions education, it has challenges and potential pitfalls that may affect the learning process and outcomes. Through a sociomateriality framework, this article describes strategies for effective online large-group teaching in health professions education in three key strands. Firstly, to optimize learning, OLGT sessions should match learning needs with appropriate OLGT platforms, incorporate strategies to sustain learner attention, and accommodate learners of different abilities. Secondly, to develop a learning culture, OLGT must not only focus on cognitive aspects of learning but also build a community of practice, nurture digital professionalism and professional identity. Thirdly, we discuss the avoidance of pitfalls such as cognitive overload of both tutors and learners, technical issues and security risks, mitigating inequities in access to online learning, and the use of program evaluation to plan for sustained improvements. We conclude with a case vignette that discusses the challenges of OLGT and the application of the above strategies in a teaching scenario.

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a major cause of rapid globalization and digitization of educational institutions, including medical education. The adaptation to digital technologies is the purpose of best education and training practices in the development of the academic medical curriculum. Virtual reality (VR) is embraced by the 3D environment and network resources which allow the expansion of VR from the entertainment industry to the education industry. This brief communication explains our understanding and the challenges in adopting VR technologies for medical training at an academic medical center. Advancement in VR technology assists medical institutes to strategize for the further development of medical training and education. There is a timely need for persistence to make the VR content accessible widely and open source. There is an urgent need for collaboration of medical institutes and technology industries on the development of education-related VR content and simulations.

The applications of malathion ULV in the Region Lagunera are considered as a fundamental action to combat the cotton boll weevil Anthonomus grandis, Boheman, considered the main pest in this region. The present study was carried out know the effect generated by aerial applications of malathion ULV on the beneficial insect associated with the cotton crop. Samples were carried out in four fields located in the state of Durango with different number of aerial applications during August in the 2018 and 2019 agricultural cycles. Samples consisted of 20 net sweeps in five points of each locality, giving a total of 100 blows per property, later collected material was classified and identified in the laboratory. The variables evaluated were the number of insects per 100 net sweeps of each species or taxonomic group. In the 2018 cycle, the Lucero field had two aerial applications presented a greater number of entomophagous insects compared to other fields (F = 7.088, gl = 3, P = 0.001). Britingham field had three aerial applications, two in Horizonte and only one in Pamplona. In the 2019 cycle no significant difference was observed between fields (F = 0.798, gl = 3, P = 0.503). San Sebastián field had three aerial applications, two in Lucero, only one in Jauja while in the Pamplona field no applications were made. In 2018 the most abundant were C. carnea, H. convergens and O. tristicolor, while in 2019 C. carnea, O. tristicolor and H. convergens were in descending order.

The automotive industry has undergone significant advancements and changes over time, resulting in the use of more complex parts in modern vehicles. As a consequence, the parts used in the manufacturing process are subject to higher stress levels, which reduce their service life. To mitigate this issue, surface treatments can be applied to improve the mechanical properties of the tools. In this study, we examined the impact of surface treatments on reducing tool stress during a cold forming process. The process involved reducing the thickness of a sheet from 6 mm to 2.5 mm, which generated high stresses in the tooling. We used finite element stress calculations to analyze the process and found that by reducing the friction coefficient to 0.1, tool stresses can be reduced by 20%, leading to an increase in tool life. Moreover, the press force and tool wear were also reduced by 18%. To validate the theoretical calculations, we performed field tests in a real manufacturing process.

PurposeThe use of Virtual Reality (VR) in health professions education has increased dramatically in recent years, yet there is limited evidence of its impact on educational outcomes. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of VR anatomy instruction on the ultrasound competency of novice learners participating in a ultrasonography workshop.MethodWe designed a VR-enhanced ultrasonography training program and utilized a plane transection tool to interact with a three-dimensional (3D) VR model of the human body which facilitated the 3D conceptualization of the spatial relationship of anatomical structures, leading to faster and better development of ultrasonographic competency. This was a randomized control study which enrolled third-year medical students (n = 101) without previous exposure to formal or informal ultrasonography training. The participants were randomly divided into an intervention and control group. We assessed participants' competency through ultrasound performance stations on live subjects, we also measured anatomical and ultrasound image identification ability using multiple choice tests.ResultParticipants in the intervention group (median = 16; interquartile 13 to 19) had significantly higher scores in ultrasonography task performance tests than the control group (median = 10; interquartile 7 to 14; Mann-Whitney U = 595; P < 0.01). In sub-group analysis, the intervention group performed significantly better in the six out of ten ultrasound tasks. Participants in the intervention group also had greater improvement in ultrasonographic image identification MCQ tests than the control group (Mann-Whitney U = 914; P < 0.05).ConclusionThis study suggests that VR-enhanced anatomical training could be of significant benefit in ultrasonography training by promoting a better understanding of the spatial relationships of anatomical structures and the development of early psychomotor skills transferable to the handling of ultrasonographic probes.

In the present study, the wear behaviour of two aluminium alloys (AA-5754 and AA-5083) is analysed where these have been previously processed by severe plastic deformation (SPD) with equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). In order to achieve the objectives of this study, several disks made of these alloys are manufactured by isothermal forging from different initial states. The microstructures of the initial materials analysed in this study have different accumulated deformation levels. In order to compare the properties of the nanostructured materials with those which have not been ECAP-processed, several disks with a height of 6 mm and a diameter of 35 mm are manufactured from both aluminium alloys (that is, AA-5754 and AA-5083) isothermally forged at temperatures of 150 and 200 °C, respectively. These thus-manufactured disks are tested under a load of 0.6 kN, which is equivalent to a stress mean value of 18 MPa, and at a rotational speed of 200 rpm. In order to determine the wear values, the disks are weighed at the beginning, at 10,000 revolutions, at 50,000 revolutions and at 100,000 revolutions, and then the volume-loss values are calculated. This study was carried out using specific equipment, which may be considered to have a block-on-ring configuration, developed for testing in-service wear behaviour of mechanical components. From this, the wear coefficients for the two materials at different initial states are obtained. In addition, a comparison is made between the behaviour of the previously ECAP-processed aluminium alloys and those that are non-ECAP-processed. A methodology is proposed to determine wear coefficients for the aluminium alloys under consideration, which may be used to predict the wear behaviour. It is demonstrated that AA-5754 and AA-5083 aluminium alloys improve wear behaviour after the ECAP process compared to that obtained in non-ECAP-processed materials.

Over these last few years, there has been a growing interest in developing mechanical components from submicrometric materials due to the significant improvement that these materials present compared to their original state. This present research work deals with the study of the mechanical properties of a connecting rod isothermally forged from different starting materials. These materials are as follows: annealed aluminum alloy (AA) 5754, the same alloy previously deformed through equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and a third case where the previously ECAP-processed material is subjected to a recovery heat treatment. A comparison is made between finite volume (FV) simulations and experimental tests with respect to hardness, plastic strain and forging force. Furthermore, the improvement in the mechanical properties of the connecting rod forged from predeformed material is evaluated in comparison to the connecting rod forged with annealed material. The microstructure of both cases is also compared at the end of the manufacturing process.

Over the last few years there has been an increasing interest in the study and development of processes that make it possible to obtain ultra-fine grained materials. Although there exists a large number of published works related to the improvement of the mechanical properties in these materials, there are only a few studies that analyse their in-service behaviour (fatigue and wear). In order to bridge the gap, in this present work, the fatigue and wear results obtained for connecting rods manufactured by using two different aluminium alloys (AA5754 and AA5083) previously deformed by severe plastic deformation (SPD), using Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP), in order to obtain the ultrafine grain size in the processed materials are shown. For both aluminium alloys, two initial states were studied: annealed and ECAPed. The connecting rods were manufactured from the previously processed materials by using isothermal forging. Fatigue and wear experiments were carried out in order to characterize the in-service behaviour of the components. A comparative study of the results was made for both initial states of the materials. Furthermore, Finite Element Modelling (FEM) simulations were used in order to compare experimental results with those obtained from simulations. In addition, dimensional wear coefficients were found for each of the aluminium alloys and initial deformation states. This research work aims to progress the knowledge of the behaviour of components manufactured from ultrafine grain materials.

Over these past few years, there have been a large number of technical papers published related to the problem of improving the mechanical properties of materials obtained through severe plastic deformation. Nevertheless, the number of technical papers dealing with improvement in the mechanical properties of mechanical components manufactured from submicrometric grain size material has not been so proficient. Therefore, in this present research work, a straight blade has been manufactured starting from AA-5083 previously processed by ECAE twice (N2) with route C. This material will be manipulated so as to be isothermally forged at different temperature values. This present research work shows the results that are inherent in an improvement in the mechanical properties and the microstructure achieved in the thus obtained components, compared with the starting material. In addition, the optimum forging temperature to achieve these components will be determined. As shown in this research work, it is possible to obtain submicrometric grain size mechanical components with a higher mechanical strength than those obtained in nonultrafine grained materials. The originality of this research work lies in the manufacturing of actual mechanical components from ECAE processed material and the analysis of their properties.

The most important difficulties when the behaviour of a part that is subjected to external mechanical forces is simulated deal with the determination of both the material thermo-mechanical properties and its boundary conditions. The accuracy of the results obtained from the simulation is directly related to the knowledge of the flow stress curve. Therefore, the determination of a material flow rule which is valid for both a wide temperature range and different initial deformation conditions in the starting material presents a great deal of interest when simulation results close to the experimental values are required to be obtained. In this present study, a novel flow stress curve is proposed that is able to accurately predict the behaviour of both materials with no previous accumulated strain and materials that have been previously subjected to severe plastic deformation processes. Moreover, it is possible to use it both for hot and cold working. The results are analysed in a wide test temperature range, which varies from room temperature to 300 °C, and from material previously processed by angular channel extrusion or with no previous strain accumulated. It is shown that the flow rule proposed is effective to model the material behaviour in a wide temperature range and it makes it possible to take the recrystallization phenomena that appear in previously deformed materials into account. In addition, the results obtained are compared with those predicted by other flow rules that exist in the prior literature. Furthermore, the study is complemented with finite element simulations and with a comparison between simulation and experimental results.

The study was based on a mestizo canine of two and a half months old, weighing 3.5 kg, with loss of approximately 60% of skin at the thoracolumbar level and with the perianal area compromised. The dog had previously been treated for hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, with fluid therapy and intravenous antibiotics (IV), (Hartmann's solution, Metronidazole) plus Metoclopramide via subcutaneous (SC), during the first three days, showing an improvement. On the fourth day of treatment, blisters were formed on the skin at the dorsal level that later broke leaving a great solution of continuity. Prednisolone, Amoxicillin Trihydrate+Potassium Clavulanate (Uniclav®) were applied (doses not presented in the medical records submitted), without any improvement. The lesion progressed to affect the ventral area, reason why the owner decided to take the dog to another veterinary center. Based on the anamnesis and the recorded findings, the antibiotic treatment was established intramuscularly (IM): Penicillin Benzathine+Procaine (Sancillin®), dose of 1 mL per 10 kg of live weight mL (0.3 mL intramuscular every 72 hours); Prednisolone 5 mg, dose of 0.2 mg/kg (½ tablet orally twice a day for seven days), continuing with - tablet daily every other day for seven days, and ending with ½ tablet daily for other seven days; Multivitamin, Mirrapel®, dose of 1 mL per 4 kg of weight, administering 1 mL orally every 24 hours; Domeboro® powder, an envelope dissolved in ¼ liter of water, two daily baths, recovering the epithelium, until the final closure of the dorsal and ventral wound. La educación es un proceso que contribuye con la formación de estudiantes en lo intelectual, lo social y lo académico de manera integral, siendo un aspecto formativo donde sobresalen las competencias comunicativas. Aparicio (1990). Incluye, …la radio como una herramienta para mejorar la competencia comunicativa oral por ser un medio de comunicación innovador y adecuado para el desarrollo del lenguaje. En relación a lo anterior y luego de una revisión documental de las pruebas Saber y diarios de campo del año 2015 en el Colegio Nacionalizado la Presentación de Duitama, se evidenció que existe un desempeño medio en el Área de Lengua Castellana del grado tercero, por lo tanto, se realizaron acciones para mejorar la competencia comunicativa oral así: Actividades en el salón de clases, para hablar frente al público y en el espacio radial Colpre, narrando historias de la vida real, desarrollando talleres lúdicos y editando programas radiales. De esta manera se puede concluir que la radio es una herramienta eficaz cuando se trata de mejorar procesos de enseñanza en la escuela, con respecto al manejo de la voz y la habilidad comunicativa oral, como estrategia en una sociedad global y competitiva.
