Abstract

Abstract Purpose: There are primarily two techniques for affixing the scleral buckle (SB) to the sclera in the repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD): scleral tunnels or scleral sutures. Methods: This retrospective study examined all patients with primary RRD who were treated with primary SB or SB combined with vitrectomy from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015 across six sites. Two cohorts were examined: SB affixed using scleral sutures versus scleral tunnels. Pre- and postoperative variables were evaluated including visual acuity, anatomic success, and postoperative strabismus. Results: The mean preoperative logMAR VA for the belt loop cohort was 1.05 ± 1.06 (Snellen 20/224) and for the scleral suture cohort was 1.03 ± 1.04 (Snellen 20/214, p = 0.846). The respective mean postoperative logMAR VAs were 0.45 ± 0.55 (Snellen 20/56) and 0.46 ± 0.59 (Snellen 20/58, p = 0.574). The single surgery success rate for the tunnel cohort was 87.3% versus 88.6% for the suture cohort (p = 0.601). Three patients (1.0%) in the scleral tunnel cohort developed postoperative strabismus, but only one patient (0.1%) in the suture cohort (p = 0.04, multivariate p = 0.76). All cases of strabismus occurred in eyes that underwent SB combined with PPV (p = 0.02). There were no differences in vision, anatomic success, or strabismus between scleral tunnels versus scleral sutures in eyes that underwent primary SB. Conclusion: Scleral tunnels and scleral sutures had similar postoperative outcomes. Combined PPV/SB in eyes with scleral tunnels might be a risk for strabismus post retinal detachment surgery.

Abstract

Background/aimsTo compare risk factors for poor visual outcomes in patients undergoing primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair and to develop a scoring system.MethodsAnalysis of the Primary Retinal detachment Outcomes (PRO) study, a multicentre interventional cohort of consecutive primary RRD surgeries performed in 2015. The main outcome measure was a poor visual outcome (Snellen VA ≤20/200).ResultsA total of 1178 cases were included. The mean preoperative and postoperative logMARs were 1.1±1.1 (20/250) and 0.5±0.7 (20/63), respectively. Multivariable logistic regression identified preoperative risk factors predictive of poor visual outcomes (≤20/200), including proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) (OR 1.26; 95% CI 1.13 to 1.40), history of antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections (1.38; 1.11 to 1.71), >1-week vision loss (1.17; 1.08 to 1.27), ocular comorbidities (1.18; 1.00 to 1.38), poor presenting VA (1.06 per initial logMAR unit; 1.02 to 1.10) and age >70 (1.13; 1.04 to 1.23). The data were split into training (75%) and validation (25%) and a scoring system was developed and validated. The risk for poor visual outcomes was 8% with a total score of 0, 17% with 1, 29% with 2, 47% with 3, and 71% with 4 or higher.ConclusionsIndependent risk factors were compared for poor visual outcomes after RRD surgery, which included PVR, anti-VEGF injections, vision loss >1 week, ocular comorbidities, presenting VA and older age. The PRO score was developed to provide a scoring system that may be useful in clinical practice.

Abstract

PURPOSE To describe characteristics and outcomes of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in older adults (age ≥ 80). METHODS Consecutive patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment undergoing pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), scleral buckling (SB), or PPV/SB in the Primary Retinal Detachment Outcomes Study were evaluated. Outcome measures included single surgery anatomic success and visual acuity. RESULTS Of 2,144 patients included, 125 (6%) were 80 years or older. Compared with younger patients (age 40-79), older adults were more likely to be pseudophakic (P < 0.001), have macula-off detachments (P < 0.001), and have preoperative proliferative vitreoretinopathy (P = 0.02). In older adults, initial surgery was PPV in 73%, PPV/SB in 27%, and primary SB in 0%. Single surgery anatomic success was 78% in older adults compared with 84% in younger patients (P = 0.03). In older adults, single surgery anatomic success was 74% for PPV and 91% for PPV/SB (P = 0.03). The final mean logMAR was lower for older adults (0.79 [20/125] vs. 0.40 [20/40], [P < 0.001]). In older adults, the final mean logMAR for eyes that underwent PPV was 0.88 (20/160) compared with 0.50 (20/63) for PPV/SB (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION Octogenarians and nonagenarians presented with relatively complex pseudophakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. Single surgery anatomic success and visual outcomes were worse compared with younger patients, and PPV/SB had better outcomes compared with PPV alone.

Abstract

Introduction Rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with inferior retinal breaks are believed to have a higher risk of recurrent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. This study compared anatomic and visual outcomes between primary pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and combination PPV with scleral buckle (PPV/SB) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with inferior retinal breaks. Methods This is an analysis of the Primary Retinal Detachment Outcomes study, a multi-institutional cohort study of consecutive primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgeries from January 1, 2015, through December 31, 2015. The primary outcome was single-surgery success rate. Only eyes with inferior retinal breaks (one break in the detached retina between five and seven o'clock) were included. Results There were 238 eyes that met the inclusion criteria, 95 (40%) of which underwent primary PPV and 163 (60%) that underwent combined PPV/SB. The single-surgery success rate was 76.8% for PPV and 87.4% for PPV/SB (P = 0.0355). This remained significant on multivariate analysis (P = 0.01). Subgroup analysis showed that a superior single-surgery success rate of PPV/SB was especially noted in phakic eyes (85.2% vs. 68.6%; P = 0.0464). Conclusion Retinal detachment with inferior retinal breaks had a higher single-surgery success rate if treated with PPV/SB compared with PPV alone, particularly in phakic eyes.

Purpose This study evaluates outcomes of comparable pseudophakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or PPV with scleral buckle (PPV-SB). Design Multicenter, retrospective, interventional cohort study. Participants Data were gathered from patients from multiple retina practices in the United States with RRD in 2015. Methods A large detailed database was generated. Pseudophakic patients with RRD managed with PPV or PPV-SB were analyzed for anatomic and visual outcomes. Eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tears, previous invasive glaucoma surgery, and ≤90 days of follow-up were excluded from outcomes analysis. Single surgery anatomic success (SSAS) was defined as retinal attachment without ongoing tamponade and with no other RRD surgery within 90 days. Main Outcome Measures Single surgery anatomic success and final Snellen visual acuity (VA). Results A total of 1158 of 2620 eyes (44%) with primary RRD were pseudophakic. A total of 1018 eyes had greater than 90 days of follow-up. Eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, previous glaucoma surgery, and giant retinal tears were excluded, leaving 893 pseudophakic eyes eligible for outcome analysis. A total of 461 (52%) were right eyes. A total of 606 patients (67%) were male, with a mean age of 65±11 years. Pars plana vitrectomy and PPV-SB as the first procedure were performed on 684 eyes (77%) and 209 eyes (23%), respectively. The mean follow-up was 388±161 days, and overall SSAS was achieved in 770 eyes (86%). Single surgery anatomic success was 84% (577/684) for PPV and 92% (193/209) for PPV-SB. The difference in SSAS between types of treatment was significant (P = 0.009). In eyes with macula-on RRD, SSAS was 88% in eyes treated with PPV and 100% in eyes treated with PPV-SB (P = 0.0088). In eyes with macula-off RRD, SSAS was 81% in eyes treated with PPV and 89% in eyes treated with PPV-SB (P = 0.029). Single surgery anatomic success was greater for PPV-SB than PPV for inferior (96% vs. 82%) and superior (90% vs. 82%) detachments. Mean final VA was similar for PPV (20/47) and PPV-SB (20/46; P = 0.805). Conclusions In pseudophakic RRDs, SSAS was better in patients treated with PPV-SB compared with PPV alone, whereas visual outcomes were similar for both groups.

Abstract

Purpose To detail the methodology for a large multicenter retrospective cohort study (RCS) of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with detailed data collection and to present overall anatomic outcomes. Design This study used an RCS method. Participants All patients undergoing pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), scleral buckling (SB), and combined PPV/SB for primary RRD in 2015 from 5 large retina groups were included in the database. Methods To ensure validity of the cohort method, a large and detailed database was generated. Double data entry validation was conducted, and data audits were conducted. Anatomic and visual outcomes for all the cases in the dataset will be described but not compared, because the cases were not matched. In future studies, comparable cases of moderate-complexity RRD will be chosen naive to surgeon, surgery, and outcome for subgroup analysis. Main Outcome Measures Precision of data entry was confirmed by inter-rater reliability (IRR). Main surgical outcome for each procedure type was single-surgery anatomic success (SSAS). Results Inter-rater reliability showed significant agreement among raters (P 90 days of follow-up. Of these, 320 eyes (13.7%) underwent SB, 1200 eyes (51.4%) underwent PPV, and 815 eyes (34.9%) underwent PPV/SB. The SSAS was 84.2% for PPV, 91.2% for SB, and 90.2% for PPV/SB. Conclusions We compiled a large, accurately documented database of primary RRD cases repaired by PPV, SB, and PPV/SB from which cohort studies of moderately complex RRDs can be carried out. All 3 approaches had a high SSAS rate. Procedures chosen and their outcomes are described, but the broad case mix makes comparisons not possible until future cohort studies are completed.

Purpose Anatomically similar rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) can be treated with scleral buckle (SB), pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), or SB combined with PPV (PPV/SB). This study compares moderately complex phakic primary RRD treated with SB, PPV, or PPV/SB to review anatomic and visual outcomes. Design Multicenter, retrospective, interventional cohort study. Participants Data were gathered on all patients from multiple retina practices in the United States with RRD in 2015 and >90 days of follow-up. The cohort of phakic patients with moderately complex RRD was analyzed. Methods A large and detailed database was generated. Eyes with findings that would bias toward PPV (vitreous hemorrhage, dense cataract, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tear, among others) were excluded. Age Main Outcome Measures Single surgery anatomic success (SSAS), defined as retinal attachment with no other RRD surgery within 90 days, is the main outcome measure. Final visual acuity is the secondary outcome measure. Pearson’s chi-square and analysis of variance were used to test treatment effect of surgery type on SSAS and vision. Results Single surgery anatomic success was noted in 155 of 169 SB cases (91.7%), 207 of 249 PPV cases (83.1%), and 271 of 297 PPV/SB cases (91.2%). Scleral buckle and PPV/SB were superior to PPV for SSAS (P = 0.0041). For macula-on or split cases, SB had significantly better visual outcomes than PPV or PPV/SB even after controlling for cataract (cases with minimal cataract at final follow-up or after cataract surgery) (P Conclusions For phakic moderately complex primary RRDs in this study of PPV versus SB versus PPV/SB, SB had the best visual outcomes, and PPV had the worst SSAS outcomes.

Abstract

PURPOSE To determine factors associated with 360-degree laser retinopexy (360LR) during primary pars plana vitrectomy ± scleral buckle for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and its impact on surgical outcomes. METHODS This is a multicenter, retrospective, interventional study. Patients undergoing primary pars plana vitrectomy or primary pars plana vitrectomy + scleral buckle for noncomplex primary RRD in 2015 were evaluated. Primary outcomes were single surgery anatomical success (SSAS) and final anatomical success. Secondary outcomes included final logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity, epiretinal membrane formation, cystoid macular edema development, and number of subsequent vitrectomies. Multivariate regressions were performed. RESULTS Two thousand two hundred and forty-eight surgeries by 61 surgeons were included; of which, 516 underwent 360LR. Younger age (P = 0.01), more retinal breaks (P = 0.01), more extensive RRD (P < 0.001), and surgeon ID (P < 0.001) were significantly associated with 360LR. No significant associations between 360LR and single surgery anatomical success (P = 0.44), epiretinal membrane formation (P = 0.14), cystoid macular edema development (P = 0.28), or number of subsequent vitrectomies (P = 0.41) were found. Controlling for case complexity, 360LR was significantly associated with lower final anatomical success (P < 0.001) and worse final logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Multiple factors influenced whether 360LR was performed during primary pars plana vitrectomy ± scleral buckle for RRD. However, 360LR was not associated with improved surgical outcomes, and in fact, it may be associated with poorer outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose To investigate the natural history and genetic associations of drusenoid pigment epithelial detachment (DPED) associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Design Retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort study. Participants Of the 4203 Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) participants, 391 eyes (325 participants) had DPED without late AMD at the time of DPED detection. Genetic analyses included 120 white AREDS2 participants and 145 Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) participants with DPED. Methods Baseline and annual stereoscopic fundus photographs were graded centrally to detect DPED, a well-defined yellow elevated mound of confluent drusen ≥433 μm in diameter, and to evaluate progression rates to late AMD: geographic atrophy (GA) and neovascular (NV)-AMD. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (CFH [rs10611670], C3 [rs2230199], CFI [rs10033900], C2/CFB [rs114254831], ARMS2 [rs10490924]) and genetic risk score (GRS) group were investigated for association with DPED development. Kaplan–Meier analyses and multivariable proportional hazard regressions were performed. Main Outcome Measures Progression rates to late AMD and decrease of ≥3 lines in visual acuity (VA) from the time of DPED detection; association of rate of DPED development with genotype. Results Mean (standard deviation [SD]) follow-up time from DPED detection was 4.7 (0.9) years. DPED was associated with increased risk of progression to late AMD (hazard ratio [HR], 2.36; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.98–2.82; P Conclusions This study replicates the results of previous natural history studies of eyes with DPED including the high rates of progression to late AMD and vision loss (regardless of progression to late AMD). The genetic associations are consistent with genes associated with AMD progression.

Abstract

To identify differences in preoperative characteristics and intraoperative approaches between surgeons with higher versus lower single surgery success rates (SSSR) for repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs).This study is a sub-analysis of subjects who underwent RRD repair in the Primary Retinal Detachment Outcomes (PRO) study, a multi-institutional, retrospective comparative interventional study. The PRO study examined consecutive primary RRD surgeries from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015. The primary outcome was variations in surgical approach to different types of RRDs with secondary analyses of pre and intraoperative metrics for surgeons with SSSR 90% compared to those80% who performed at least 40 operations during the study period.A total of 689 surgeries were included in the analysis. The mean SSSR was 94% for the higher tier and 75% for the lower tier (p 0.0001). Surgeons with90% SSSR were more likely to have graduated fellowship more recently (p = 0.0025), use less perfluorocarbon liquid (p 0.0001), perform less 360 degree laser retinopexy (p 0.0001), and perform a higher percentage of primary buckles and combined PPV/SB (p 0.0001). For pseudophakic eyes there was no difference between PPV and PPV/SB use (p = 0.6211).Surgeons with high SSSR typically performed SB as well as combination PPV/SB for more RRDs. Similar numbers of PPV and PPV/SB were performed for pseudophakic eyes, suggesting that the difference in SSSR between the two groups may be related to a combination of preoperative and intraoperative decisions as well as differences in technique.

Abstract

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with inferior retinal breaks are believed to have a higher risk of recurrent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. This study compared anatomic and visual outcomes between primary pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and combination PPV with scleral buckle (PPV/SB) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with inferior retinal breaks.This is an analysis of the Primary Retinal Detachment Outcomes study, a multi-institutional cohort study of consecutive primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgeries from January 1, 2015, through December 31, 2015. The primary outcome was single-surgery success rate. Only eyes with inferior retinal breaks (one break in the detached retina between five and seven o'clock) were included.There were 238 eyes that met the inclusion criteria, 95 (40%) of which underwent primary PPV and 163 (60%) that underwent combined PPV/SB. The single-surgery success rate was 76.8% for PPV and 87.4% for PPV/SB (P = 0.0355). This remained significant on multivariate analysis (P = 0.01). Subgroup analysis showed that a superior single-surgery success rate of PPV/SB was especially noted in phakic eyes (85.2% vs. 68.6%; P = 0.0464).Retinal detachment with inferior retinal breaks had a higher single-surgery success rate if treated with PPV/SB compared with PPV alone, particularly in phakic eyes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Most surgeons now utilize small-gauge (23- or 25-gauge) pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with or without scleral buckling for repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD), in addition to primary scleral buckle (SB), but comparative data between the two gauges are limited. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study is an analysis of primary RRD repairs comparing 23- versus 25-gauge vitrectomy for PPV or combination PPV/SB from January 1, 2015, through December 31, 2015, across multiple institutions. The primary outcome was single-surgery success and secondary outcomes included postoperative complications. RESULTS: There were 1,932 eyes that met inclusion criteria. There was no statistically significant difference in single-surgery success (82.9% vs. 83.8%; P = 0.6329). There were similar rates of postoperative hypotony, endophthalmitis, vitreous hemorrhage, and choroidal detachment. The findings were similar when analyzing only eyes that underwent primary PPV without SB. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Non-causal macular holes (MHs) can occur concurrently with rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs). The visual outcomes and surgical approach for these eyes are variable. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a multi-institutional, retrospective review of all primary retinal detachment surgeries from January 1, 2015, through December 31, 2015. Pre-, intra-, and postoperative metrics were recorded. RESULTS: There were 2,242 eyes that had pars plana vitrectomy for primary RRD, 43 (1.9%) of which had a MH at the time of surgery. The mean postoperative logMAR visual acuity (VA) for the MH cohort was 0.87 ± 0.64 (20/148) and for eyes without a MH was 0.47 ± 0.63 (20/59; P < .0001). The single-surgery re-attachment rate for the MH cohort and no MH cohort was 86.1% and 84.9%, respectively ( P = 1.0000). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with noncausal MHs and RRD had significantly worse VA than patients without a MH. Preoperative counseling is imperative in patients with both RRD and MH. Abstract

This study evaluates outcomes of comparable pseudophakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or PPV with scleral buckle (PPV-SB).Multicenter, retrospective, interventional cohort study.Data were gathered from patients from multiple retina practices in the United States with RRD in 2015.A large detailed database was generated. Pseudophakic patients with RRD managed with PPV or PPV-SB were analyzed for anatomic and visual outcomes. Eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tears, previous invasive glaucoma surgery, and ≤90 days of follow-up were excluded from outcomes analysis. Single surgery anatomic success (SSAS) was defined as retinal attachment without ongoing tamponade and with no other RRD surgery within 90 days.Single surgery anatomic success and final Snellen visual acuity (VA).A total of 1158 of 2620 eyes (44%) with primary RRD were pseudophakic. A total of 1018 eyes had greater than 90 days of follow-up. Eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, previous glaucoma surgery, and giant retinal tears were excluded, leaving 893 pseudophakic eyes eligible for outcome analysis. A total of 461 (52%) were right eyes. A total of 606 patients (67%) were male, with a mean age of 65±11 years. Pars plana vitrectomy and PPV-SB as the first procedure were performed on 684 eyes (77%) and 209 eyes (23%), respectively. The mean follow-up was 388±161 days, and overall SSAS was achieved in 770 eyes (86%). Single surgery anatomic success was 84% (577/684) for PPV and 92% (193/209) for PPV-SB. The difference in SSAS between types of treatment was significant (P = 0.009). In eyes with macula-on RRD, SSAS was 88% in eyes treated with PPV and 100% in eyes treated with PPV-SB (P = 0.0088). In eyes with macula-off RRD, SSAS was 81% in eyes treated with PPV and 89% in eyes treated with PPV-SB (P = 0.029). Single surgery anatomic success was greater for PPV-SB than PPV for inferior (96% vs. 82%) and superior (90% vs. 82%) detachments. Mean final VA was similar for PPV (20/47) and PPV-SB (20/46; P = 0.805).In pseudophakic RRDs, SSAS was better in patients treated with PPV-SB compared with PPV alone, whereas visual outcomes were similar for both groups.

Abstract

Purpose To analyze the prevalence, incidence, and clinical characteristics of eyes with geographic atrophy (GA) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including clinical and genetic factors affecting enlargement. Design Prospective cohort study within a controlled clinical trial. Participants Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) participants, aged 50–85 years. Methods Baseline and annual stereoscopic color fundus photographs were evaluated for GA presence and area. Analyses included GA prevalence and incidence rates, Kaplan-Meier rates, mixed-model regression, and multivariable analysis of the square root of GA, area adjusted for covariates, including clinical/imaging characteristics and genotype. Main Outcome Measures (1) Presence or development of GA; (2) change in the square root of GA area over time. Results At baseline, 517 eyes (6.2%) of 411 participants (9.8%) had pre-existing GA (without neovascular AMD), with the following characteristics: 33% central, 67% noncentral; and the following configurations: 36% small, 26% solid/unifocal, 24% multifocal, 9% horseshoe/ring, and 6% indeterminate. Of the remaining 6530 eyes at risk, 1099 eyes (17.3%) of 883 participants developed incident GA without prior neovascular disease during mean follow-up of 4.4 years. The Kaplan-Meier rate of incident GA was 19% of eyes at 5 years. In eyes with incident GA, 4-year risk of subsequent neovascular AMD was 29%. In eyes with incident noncentral GA, 4-year risk of central involvement was 57%. GA enlargement rate (following square root transformation) was similar in eyes with pre-existing GA (0.29 mm/year; 95% confidence interval 0.27–0.30) and incident GA (0.28 mm/year; 0.27–0.30). In the combined group, GA enlargement was significantly faster with noncentrality, multifocality, intermediate baseline size, and bilateral GA (P Conclusions Analyses of AREDS2 data on natural history of GA provide representative data on GA evolution and enlargement. GA enlargement, which was influenced by lesion features, was relentless, resulting in rapid central vision loss. The genetic variants associated with faster enlargement were partially distinct from those associated with risk of incident GA. These findings are relevant to further investigations of GA pathogenesis and clinical trial planning.

28. Experimental and analytical investigations on the failure modes of concrete sandwich panels under axial compression

Abstract

AbstractIn this paper, precast lightweight Concrete Sandwich Panels (CSP) with reinforced concrete skins/wythes, truss shear connectors and expanded polystyrene core are proposed to be a good alternative for replacing conventional load bearing brick masonry walls. Literature review indicated that studies examining the failure modes of concrete sandwich panels under axial compression are not reported. Towards filling this gap and for developing design guidelines for practical applications, in this paper, failure modes of CSP are theoretically defined. Experimental investigations are conducted to determine the actual failure modes, strength and behaviour of the panels under axial compression. The failure modes observed from the experimental study are compared with the theoretical failure modes. Test results indicated that CSP can be used for practical applications as an alternative to conventional brick masonry walls. Attempts are also made to find the applicability of available strength predicting formulas of sandwich members/RC walls for concrete sandwich panels. Results showed that the available formulas have to be modified for predicting the axial compressive strength of CSP with reasonable accuracy.

29. Luminescence and Scintillation Characterization of Sodium-Based Tungstate (Na2W2O7) Crystal for Dark Matter Search

Abstract

A Na2W2O7 single crystal was grown with a conventional Czochralski technique in a platinum crucible. A solid-state reaction method was used for the preparation of the polycrystalline compound. Temperature-dependent luminescence and scintillation properties of the crystal were studied under the excitation with a 280 nm light-emitting diode (LED) source, an X-ray source, and a 90Sr (beta) source. At different temperatures (from 300 to 10 K), an as-grown crystal’s luminescence and scintillation light output was compared with a CaMoO4 crystal. Although the light output of Na2W2O7 crystal at room temperature is lower than CaMoO4 crystal, at 10 K, it is almost comparable. Compared to room temperature, the crystal’s luminescence and scintillation light output at 10 K were increased by $\sim $ 17 and $\sim $ 14 fold, respectively. The decay time of the crystal was studied between 300 and 10 K using a 280 nm LED excitation source, and it varies from $3 \mu \text{s}$ (300 K) to $\sim 94 \mu \text{s}$ (10 K). A thermoluminescence (TL) study was carried out between 10 and 550 K. The kinetic parameters of the TL peaks are calculated with various standard methods. The current result suggests that the studied crystal has good potential as a cryogenic detector for dark matter search experiments in the near future.

Abstract

Background/aimsVitrectomy to repair retinal detachment is often performed with either non-contact wide-angle viewing systems or wide-angle contact viewing systems. The purpose of this study is to assess whether the viewing system used is associated with any differences in surgical outcomes of vitrectomy for primary non-complex retinal detachment repair.MethodsThis is a multicenter, interventional, retrospective, comparative study. Eyes that underwent non-complex primary retinal detachment repair by either pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) alone or in combination with scleral buckle/PPV in 2015 were evaluated. The viewing system at the time of the retinal detachment repair was identified and preoperative patient characteristics, intraoperative findings and postoperative outcomes were recorded.ResultsA total of 2256 eyes were included in our analysis. Of those, 1893 surgeries used a non-contact viewing system, while 363 used a contact lens system. There was no statistically significant difference in single surgery anatomic success at 3 months (p=0.72), or final anatomic success (p=0.40). Average postoperative visual acuity for the contact-based cases was logMAR 0.345 (20/44 Snellen equivalent) compared with 0.475 (20/60 Snellen equivalent) for non-contact (p=0.001). After controlling for numerous confounding variables in multivariable analysis, viewing system choice was no longer statistically significant (p=0.097).ConclusionThere was no statistically significant difference in anatomic success achieved for primary retinal detachment repair when comparing non-contact viewing systems to contact lens systems. Postoperative visual acuity was better in the contact-based group but this was not statistically significant when confounding factors were controlled for.

Abstract

Anatomically similar rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) can be treated with scleral buckle (SB), pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), or SB combined with PPV (PPV/SB). This study compares moderately complex phakic primary RRD treated with SB, PPV, or PPV/SB to review anatomic and visual outcomes.Multicenter, retrospective, interventional cohort study.Data were gathered on all patients from multiple retina practices in the United States with RRD in 2015 and90 days of follow-up. The cohort of phakic patients with moderately complex RRD was analyzed.A large and detailed database was generated. Eyes with findings that would bias toward PPV (vitreous hemorrhage, dense cataract, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tear, among others) were excluded. Age40 years (bias toward SB) was excluded. Comparable cases of moderately complex RRD were then chosen naive to surgeon, surgery, and outcome for subgroup analysis.Single surgery anatomic success (SSAS), defined as retinal attachment with no other RRD surgery within 90 days, is the main outcome measure. Final visual acuity is the secondary outcome measure. Pearson's chi-square and analysis of variance were used to test treatment effect of surgery type on SSAS and vision.Single surgery anatomic success was noted in 155 of 169 SB cases (91.7%), 207 of 249 PPV cases (83.1%), and 271 of 297 PPV/SB cases (91.2%). Scleral buckle and PPV/SB were superior to PPV for SSAS (P = 0.0041). For macula-on or split cases, SB had significantly better visual outcomes than PPV or PPV/SB even after controlling for cataract (cases with minimal cataract at final follow-up or after cataract surgery) (P0.001).For phakic moderately complex primary RRDs in this study of PPV versus SB versus PPV/SB, SB had the best visual outcomes, and PPV had the worst SSAS outcomes.

Abstract

To determine factors associated with 360-degree laser retinopexy (360LR) during primary pars plana vitrectomy ± scleral buckle for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and its impact on surgical outcomes.This is a multicenter, retrospective, interventional study. Patients undergoing primary pars plana vitrectomy or primary pars plana vitrectomy + scleral buckle for noncomplex primary RRD in 2015 were evaluated. Primary outcomes were single surgery anatomical success (SSAS) and final anatomical success. Secondary outcomes included final logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity, epiretinal membrane formation, cystoid macular edema development, and number of subsequent vitrectomies. Multivariate regressions were performed.Two thousand two hundred and forty-eight surgeries by 61 surgeons were included; of which, 516 underwent 360LR. Younger age (P = 0.01), more retinal breaks (P = 0.01), more extensive RRD (P0.001), and surgeon ID (P0.001) were significantly associated with 360LR. No significant associations between 360LR and single surgery anatomical success (P = 0.44), epiretinal membrane formation (P = 0.14), cystoid macular edema development (P = 0.28), or number of subsequent vitrectomies (P = 0.41) were found. Controlling for case complexity, 360LR was significantly associated with lower final anatomical success (P0.001) and worse final logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity (P0.001).Multiple factors influenced whether 360LR was performed during primary pars plana vitrectomy ± scleral buckle for RRD. However, 360LR was not associated with improved surgical outcomes, and in fact, it may be associated with poorer outcomes.

Abstract

Cerebroretinal vasculopathy, hereditary vascular retinopathy, and hereditary endotheliopathy, retinopathy, nephropathy and stroke are neurovascular syndromes initially described as distinct entities. Recently they were shown to be one disease caused by C-terminal frame-shift mutations in TREX1 , which was termed ‘retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukodystrophy’. Here we defined the genetic and clinicopathologic spectrum of this clinically and pathophysiologically poorly characterized and frequently misdiagnosed fatal neurovascular disorder. We identified five different TREX1 mutations in 78 members from 11 unrelated families and by using a standardized study protocol we retrospectively reviewed and aggregated the associated clinical, neuroimaging, and pathology data. Findings were similar across mutations and families. Sixty-four mutation carriers had vascular retinopathy. Neuroimaging revealed (i) punctate, hyperintense, white matter lesions with or without nodular enhancement in 97% of them; (ii) rim-enhancing mass lesions in 84%; and (iii) calcifications in the white matter in 52%. Ninety per cent had clinical manifestations of brain disease, including focal neurological deficits (68%), migraine (59%), cognitive impairment (56%), psychiatric disturbances (42%), and seizures (17%). One mutation carrier had enhancing brain lesions and neurological features but unknown retinopathy status. Additional systemic features included liver disease (78%), anaemia (74%), nephropathy (61%), hypertension (60%), mild Raynaud’s phenomenon (40%), and gastro-intestinal bleeding (27%). Mean (± standard deviation) age at diagnosis was 42.9 ± 8.3 years and at death 53.1 ± 9.6 years. Pathological examination revealed systemic vasculopathy with luminal narrowing and multi-laminated basement membranes. The 13 mutation carriers without retinopathy or brain lesions were on average 8 years younger (mean age: 35.1 ± 10.6 years). Of them, 54% had mild Raynaud’s phenomenon, 42% had migraine, and 23% had psychiatric disturbances. Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukodystrophy is an autosomal dominant systemic small-vessel disease due to specific TREX1 mutations and clinically primarily characterized by (i) visual impairment from vascular retinopathy; and (ii) neurological decline and premature death due to progressive enhancing cerebral white matter lesions. Impaired liver and kidney function, anaemia sometimes associated with gastrointestinal bleeding, hypertension, migraine, and Raynaud’s phenomenon appear to be part of the clinical spectrum as well. Penetrance seems high. Because of the pathogenetic basis and the emerging clinical picture with systemic manifestations and conspicuous absence of leukodystrophy, we renamed the disease ‘retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations’. Abstract

To evaluate the association of subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM) with visual acuity (VA), geographic atrophy (GA), and scar in the Comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT).Prospective cohort study within a randomized clinical trial.The 1185 CATT participants.Masked readers graded scar and GA on fundus photography and fluorescein angiography and graded SHRM on time-domain and spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) throughout 104 weeks. Measurements of SHRM height and width in the fovea, within the center 1 mm(2), or outside the center 1mm(2) were obtained on SD OCT images at 56 (n = 76) and 104 (n = 66) weeks.Presence of SHRM, as well as location and size, and associations with VA, scar, and GA.Among CATT participants, the percentage with SHRM at enrollment was 77%, decreasing to 68% at 4 weeks after treatment and to 54% at 104 weeks. At 104 weeks, scar was present more often in eyes with persistent SHRM than in eyes with SHRM that resolved (64% vs. 31%; P0.0001). Among eyes with detailed evaluation of SHRM at weeks 56 (n = 76) and 104 (n = 66), mean VA letter score was 73.5 (standard error [SE], 2.8), 73.1 (SE, 3.4), 65.3 (SE, 3.5), and 63.9 (SE, 3.7) when SHRM was absent, present outside the central 1 mm(2), present within the central 1 mm(2) but not the foveal center, or present at the foveal center (P = 0.02), respectively. When SHRM was present, the median maximum height under the fovea, within the central 1 mm(2) including the fovea and anywhere within the scan, was 86 μm, 120 μm, and 122 μm, respectively. Visual acuity was decreased with greater SHRM height and width (P0.05).In eyes with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), SHRM is common and often persists after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment. At 2 years, eyes with scar were more likely to have SHRM than other eyes. Greater SHRM dimensions were associated with worse VA. In eyes with neovascular AMD, SHRM is an important morphologic biomarker.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To compare efficacy of monthly treatment with bevacizumab or ranibizumab for macular edema due to retinal vein occlusion. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Randomized, multicenter, comparative trial ( ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01428388). Participants were randomized 1:1 to receive monthly treatment with bevacizumab or ranibizumab. The primary outcome was change in central foveal thickness at 6 months compared to baseline. RESULTS: The trial randomized 98 patients to treatment with bevacizumab or ranibizumab. At 6 months, there were no differences in change in central foveal thickness between groups (bevacizumab: mean reduction of 212.6 µm, 95% confidence interval [CI], −288.3 to −137.0; ranibizumab: mean reduction of 243.8 µm, 95% CI, −309.6 to −178.0; P = .72, analysis of variance [ANOVA]). Both groups showed similar functional outcomes (bevacizumab: 0.33 logMAR gain, 95% CI, −0.47 to −0.18; ranibizumab: 0.34 logMAR gain, 95% CI, −0.45 to −0.23; P = .38, ANOVA). CONCLUSION: In the treatment of retinal vein occlusion, bevacizumab and ranibizumab have similar effects on reducing macular thickness and improving visual acuity. 37. Influence of Friction Stir Welding Variants on Crashworthiness of Friction Stir Welded Aluminium Top Hat Sections

Abstract

The motivation for this research is the desire to design a cross-section of frontal crash absorbing member that deforms in a regular controlled manner, but also the desire for cost-to-weight effectiveness. Nowadays, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a popular process for welding of difficult to weld aluminium alloys due to its advantages of solidification related defect free microstructure, low residual stress and comparable mechanical properties with the base metal. In order to better understand the crashworthiness of aluminium alloy joints produced by FSW, this investigation was carried out to fabricate a frontal member top hat section with base member welded by three different friction stir welding process variants. The crashworthiness was investigated by subjecting the fabricated joints to quasi static loading and the results are reported. The experimental results are compared with the results of numerical simulation.

Abstract

Composite structural elements can serve dual purposes of transferring the load and insulating the buildings. This paper presents and discusses the results of experimental study carried out to understand the flexural behavior of prototype precast insulated concrete sandwich panels using truss-shaped continuous shear connectors. Experimental study consisted of four prototype concrete sandwich panels tested under four-point bending simulating one-way slab action. Panel thickness and size of wire mesh used as reinforcement in concrete wythes are the major parameters considered. Test results indicate that the truss-shaped shear connectors are effective to achieve composite action of the panels until failure. Test results also indicate that the panel thickness affects the flexural load carrying capacity, and size of wire mesh affects the ductility. Experimental and analytical studies are required in this area towards developing guidelines for design of concrete sandwich panels for field applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

* BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To report a modified erbium:YAG laser scalpel designed to incise tissue more efficiently and safely than other systems reported to date. * MATERIALS AND METHODS: An erbium:YAG laser delivery system was built to deliver laser energy in bursts of micropulses with a repetition rate of 1,000 Hz. The laser was coupled to handpieces with tip designs equipped with shields, backstops, and beveled, straight, and flexible fibers. In vivo studies in the rabbit eye were performed to determine damage threshold, optimal pulse energy, and burst frequency required to make incisions in the retina and choroid. The safety profile and directional control provided by the handpieces were tested for consistency. Partial- and full-thickness retinal-choroidal incisions were examined clinically and histologically at various time intervals. * RESULTS: The best incisions were obtained at a fluence of 3.5 J/cm p 2 or greater, a burst repetition rate of 10 to 40 Hz, and 6 micropulses per burst. Retinal damage occurred when incising laser energy was used 500 µm or closer to the retinal surface. Depth of penetration of laser energy did not depend on burst repetition rate. The use of laser endoprobes equipped with shields and backstops provides absolute protection from stray laser energy in aqueous media. The use of flexible beveled fiber tips provides reliable, accurate directional control. Retinal-choroidal incisions and damage resulted in local retinal-choroidal degeneration and adhesion formation. * CONCLUSION: The modifications to the erbium:YAG laser scalpel provide a more efficient, versatile, and safe application to vitreoretinal surgery than any system reported to date. Abstract

Purpose To evaluate the anatomic closure rate and visual outcome in patients undergoing pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling with and without indocyanine green (ICG) enhancement. Design Retrospective, noncomparative interventional case series. Participants One hundred ninety-three consecutive patients (204 eyes) seen at the Barnes Retina Institute with the clinical diagnosis of macular hole who underwent PPV between January 1998 and December 2000. Intervention A consecutive series of 97 patients undergoing PPV with or without unilateral epiretinal membrane removal without ILM peeling (group 1), 44 patients with PPV and ILM peeling without ICG (group 2), and 35 patients with ICG-assisted ILM peeling (group 3). Results Overall, 86.4% of the holes closed with one operation, with 75 of 97 (77.3%) eyes in group 1, 43 of 44 (97.7%) eyes in group 2, and 34 of 35 (97.1%) eyes in group 3 (χ 2 = 10.51, P = 0.007). Of the eyes that did not close, 18 patients in group 1 underwent repeat surgery, with 90 of 97 (92.8%) eyes ultimately achieving closure. Visual acuity after surgery was 20/50 or better in 55 of 97 (56.7%) patients, 31 of 44 (70.4%) patients, and 18 of 35 (51.4%) patients in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively (χ 2 = 3.43, P = 0.18) and increased by 2 or more lines from their preoperative status in 63 of 97 (64.9%) patients, 34 of 44 (77.3%) patients, and 25 of 35 (71.4%) patients, respectively (χ 2 = 2.25, P = 0.32). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that use of ILM peeling during vitrectomy increases the chances of developing 20/50 vision or better (odds ratio [OR], 2.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.06–5.45; P = 0.04). No eyes received concurrent cataract extraction with macular hole surgery, but 75 of 166 (45.2%) required cataract extraction postoperatively. Complications included 20 retinal tears, 4 retinal detachments, and 34 patients with postoperative elevations in intraocular pressure (IOP; defined as IOP greater than 30 mmHg). Conclusions Although this study is limited by the shorter follow-up in patients undergoing ILM peeling with or without ICG relative to the control group, our experience indicates that the use of ILM peeling is associated with a statistically significant improvement in the rate of primary macular hole closure with a single operation.

Abstract

Implementation of multicenter and/or longitudinal studies requires an effective quality assurance program to identify trends, data inconsistencies and process variability of results over time. The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and the follow-up Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study represent over 30 years of data collection among a cohort of participants across 27 clinical centers. The quality assurance plan is overseen by the Data Coordinating Center and is implemented across the clinical centers and central reading units. Each central unit incorporates specific DCCT/EDIC quality monitoring activities into their routine quality assurance plan. The results are reviewed by a data quality assurance committee whose function is to identify variances in quality that may impact study results from the central units as well as within and across clinical centers, and to recommend implementation of corrective procedures when necessary. Over the 30-year period, changes to the methods, equipment, or clinical procedures have been required to keep procedures current and ensure continued collection of scientifically valid and clinically relevant results. Pilot testing to compare historic processes with contemporary alternatives is performed and comparability is validated prior to incorporation of new procedures into the study. Details of the quality assurance plan across and within the clinical and central reading units are described, and quality outcomes for core measures analyzed by the central reading units (e.g. biochemical samples, fundus photographs, ECGs) are presented.

Abstract

Determine sensitivity, specificity, and prognostic signs of orbital and ocular computed tomography (CT) in diagnosing patients with open globe injury.Randomized masked review of computed tomograms and retrospective clinical correlation of patients with ocular trauma.Two hundred patients who underwent CT evaluation for ocular trauma between 1989 and 1993.CTs were read by three masked observers; findings were tabulated and compared for variability among observers; sensitivity and specificity were calculated and CT findings were grouped according to visual outcome retrieved from record review.In the absence of clinical information, sensitivity and specificity were 75% and 93%, respectively. The positive predictive value ranged from 88% to 97%, with a calculated overall positive predictive value of 95%. Patients who had a poor visual outcome (visual acuity2/200) or who underwent enucleation had significantly more CT findings than patients with a good visual outcome. Vitreous hemorrhage, absence of lens, and severe distortion of vitreous space are among the most common CT findings associated with poor visual outcome.CT is not sensitive enough to be solely relied upon for diagnosis of all open globe injuries. CT findings only complement clinical findings, increasing the clinician's overall ability to make an accurate diagnosis of open globe injury, and may provide useful prognostic information regarding visual outcome.

Abstract

Precast concrete sandwich panels having two wythes separated by a core may serve dual purposes of transferring load and insulating. Research studies with respect to flexural behavior of these panels under four-point bending are available in the literature. Nevertheless, experimental and analytical studies with respect to flexural behavior of concrete sandwich panels under punching load are not found. In this paper experimental and analytical studies carried out to understand and compare flexural behavior of concrete sandwich panels under two different loading conditions such as punching and four-point bending are presented and discussed. Experimental study indicates that, type of loading conditions affects the flexural behavior of the concrete sandwich panels significantly. The panel subjected to punching load failed in flexural mode, and its behavior is similar to conventional RC slab. Under four-point bending the panel failure is attributed to failure of concrete by combined effect of shear and flexural stresses. For both types of loading conditions, analytically predicted cracking moment is comparable to the experimental cracking moment. Further experimental and analytical studies are required in this area to develop design guidelines for practical applications of these types of panels under different loading conditions. Abstract

Intracellular microelectrode techniques were used to characterize the electrical responses of the bovine retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-choroid to epinephrine (EP) and several other catecholamines that are putative paracrine signals between the neural retina and the RPE. Nanomolar amounts of EP or norepinephrine (NEP), added to the apical bath, caused a series of conductance and voltage changes, first at the basolateral or choroid-facing membrane and then at the apical or retina-facing membrane. The relative potency of several adrenergic agonists and antagonists indicates that EP modulation of RPE transport begins with the activation of apical alpha-1-adrenergic receptors. The membrane-permeable calcium (Ca2+) buffer, amyl-BAPTA (1,2-bis(o-aminophenoxy)-ethane-N,N,N',N' tetraacetic acid) inhibited the EP-induced voltage and conductance changes by approximately 50-80%, implicating [Ca2+]i as a second messenger. This conclusion is supported by experiments using the Ca2+ ionophore A23187, which mimics the effects of EP. The basolateral membrane voltage response to EP was blocked by lowering cell Cl, by the presence of DIDS (4,4'-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid) in the basal bath, and by current clamping VB to the Cl equilibrium potential. In the latter experiments the EP-induced conductance changes were unaltered, indicating that EP increases basolateral membrane Cl conductance independent of voltage. The EP-induced change in basolateral Cl conductance was followed by a secondary decrease in apical membrane K conductance (approximately 50%) as measured by delta [K]o-induced diffusion potentials. Decreasing apical K from 5 to 2 mM in the presence of EP mimicked the effect of light on RPE apical and basolateral membrane voltage. These results indicate that EP may be an important paracrine signal that provides exquisite control of RPE physiology.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To compare the surgical outcome of scleral buckling (group 1) versus scleral buckling with pars plana vitrectomy (group 2) for the repair of macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment without proliferative vitreoretinopathy. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective chart review was performed. RESULTS Eighty-three patients were identified in group 1 and 63 patients in group 2. Presenting visual acuity was 4/200 in group 1 and 3/200 in group 2. Median duration of detachment prior to surgery was 5 days in group 1 and 6 days in group 2. There was no statistical difference in best-corrected (P = .59) or most recent (P = .75) visual acuity between groups. Median best-corrected visual acuity was 20/30 and median most recent visual acuity was 20/40 in both groups. Significantly more additional procedures were performed in group 1 than in group 2 (21.7% vs 7.9%, respectively; P = .024). The final reattachment rate was 96.4% in group 1 and 98.4% in group 2. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy developed in 15.7% of patients in group 1 and 4.8% in group 2 (P = .037). CONCLUSION Visual outcome of scleral buckling is similar to scleral buckling with pars plana vitrectomy for the treatment of macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in patients without proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Patients undergoing scleral buckling only are at an increased risk of developing proliferative vitreoretinopathy and requiring additional procedures. Abstract

OBJECTIVE To examine the persistence of the original treatment effects 10 years after the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) in the follow-up Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study. In the DCCT, intensive therapy aimed at near-normal glycemia reduced the risk of microvascular complications of type 1 diabetes mellitus compared with conventional therapy. METHODS Retinopathy was evaluated by fundus photography in 1211 subjects at EDIC year 10. Further 3-step progression on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study scale from DCCT closeout was the primary outcome. RESULTS After 10 years of EDIC follow-up, there was no significant difference in mean glycated hemoglobin levels (8.07% vs 7.98%) between the original treatment groups. Nevertheless, compared with the former conventional treatment group, the former intensive group had significantly lower incidences from DCCT close of further retinopathy progression and proliferative retinopathy or worse (hazard reductions, 53%-56%; P < .001). The risk (hazard) reductions at 10 years of EDIC were attenuated compared with the 70% to 71% over the first 4 years of EDIC (P < .001). The persistent beneficial effects of former intensive therapy were largely explained by the difference in glycated hemoglobin levels during DCCT. CONCLUSION The persistent difference in diabetic retinopathy between former intensive and conventional therapy ("metabolic memory") continues for at least 10 years but may be waning. Abstract

Purpose To define the role of intravitreal bevacizumab in individuals with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) resulting from Ocular Histoplasmosis syndrome (OHS). Design Retrospective chart review of a surgical therapy. Methods We reviewed the course of 28 eyes of 28 patients who underwent intravitreal injection of bevacizumab for treatment of CNV secondary to OHS. Outcome was measured by pretreatment and posttreatment visual acuity (VA). Results The average pretreatment logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) VA was 0.65 (Snellen equivalent of 20/88). Mean follow-up was 22.43 weeks with an average of 1.8 intravitreal injections. Average final logMAR VA was 0.43 (Snellen equivalent of 20/54). Twenty eyes (71%) experienced an increase in central VA, whereas four eyes (14%) were unchanged and four eyes (14%) experienced a decrease in vision. Conclusions Intravitreal bevacizumab may improve or stabilize VA in a significant majority of patients with neovascular complications of OHS (24 eyes [85.7%] in our study population).
