This paper presents in situ time-resolved drug mass fraction measurements in pressurised metered dose inhaler (PMDI) sprays, using a novel combination of synchrotron X-ray fluorescence and scattering. Equivalent suspension and solution formulations of ipratropium bromide in HFA-134a propellant were considered. Measurements were made both inside the expansion chamber behind the nozzle orifice, and in the first few millimeters of the spray where droplet and particle formation occur. We observed a consistent spike in drug mass fraction at the beginning of the spray when the first fluid exits the nozzle orifice. Approximately 20% of the total delivered dose exits the nozzle in the first 0.1 s of the spray. The drug mass fraction in the droplets immediately upon exiting the nozzle peaked at approximately 50% of the canister mass fraction, asymptoting to approximately 20% of the canister concentration. The effect is due to a change in the drug mass fraction inside the droplets, rather than changes in droplet size or distribution. The transient was found to originate inside the expansion chamber. We propose that this effect may be a major contributor to low delivery efficiency in PMDIs, and have important implications for oropharyngeal deposition and inhalation technique. This highlights the importance of expansion chamber and nozzle design on the structure of PMDI sprays, and indicates areas of focus that may lead to improvement in drug delivery outcomes.

The interaction between various wavelike structures in screeching jets is considered via both experimental measurements and linear stability theory. Velocity snapshots of screeching jets are used to produce a reduced order model of the screech cycle via proper orthogonal decomposition. Streamwise Fourier filtering is then applied to isolate the negative and positive wavenumber components, which for the waves of interest in this jet correspond to upstream and downstream-travelling waves. A global stability analysis on an experimentally derived base flow is conducted, demonstrating a close match to the results obtained via experiment, indicating that the mechanisms considered here are well represented in a linear framework. In both analyses, three distinct wavelike structures are evident. These three waves are those first shown by Tam & Hu (1989) to be supported by a cylindrical vortex sheet. One is the Kelvin-Helmholtz mode. Another is the upstream-travelling guided jet mode that has been a topic of recent discussion. The third component, with positive phase velocity, has not previously been identified in screeching jets. We provide evidence that this downstream-travelling wave is a duct-like mode similar to that recently identified in high-subsonic jets by Towne et al. (2017). We further demonstrate that both of the latter two waves are generated by the interaction between the Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepacket and the shock cells in the flow, according to a theory first proposed in Tam & Tanna (1982). Finally, we consider the periodic spatial modulation of the coherent velocity fluctuation evident in screeching jets, and show that this modulation is the result of the superposition of the three wavelike structures, with no evidence that the shocks in the flow modulate the growth of the Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepacket., 27 pages, 10 figures. A new diagnostic for the quantification of Sauter mean diameter in high-pressure fuel sprays has been recently developed using combined optical and X-ray measurements at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Argonne National Laboratory, respectively. This diagnostic utilizes liquid scattering extinction measurements from diffuse back-illumination imaging, conducted at Georgia Tech, and liquid absorption measurements from X-ray radiography, conducted at Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source. The new diagnostic, entitled the scattering–absorption measurement ratio, quantifies two-dimensional distributions of path-integrated Sauter mean diameter, enabling the construction of the spatial history of drop size development within practical fuel sprays. This technique offers unique benefits over conventional drop-sizing methods in that it can be more robust in optically dense regions of the spray, while also providing high spatial resolution of the corresponding droplet field. The methodology for quantification of Sauter mean diameter distributions using the scattering–absorption measurement ratio technique has been previously introduced and demonstrated in diesel sprays using the Engine Combustion Network Spray D injector; however, a more detailed treatment of measurement uncertainties has been needed. In this work, we present a summary of the various sources of measurement uncertainty in the scattering–absorption measurement ratio diagnostic, like those due to the experimental setup, data processing methods, and theoretical assumptions, and assess how these sources of uncertainty affect the quantified Sauter mean diameter. The spatially resolved Sauter mean diameter measurements that result from the scattering–absorption measurement ratio diagnostic will be especially valuable to the engine modeling community for the quantitative validation of spray submodels in engine computational fluid dynamics codes. Careful evaluation and quantification of measurement uncertainties are important to support accurate model validation and to ensure the development of more predictive spray models.

X-rays are frequently used to study the internal geometry of dense objects, and to measure the density of multiphase flows. However, quantitatively measuring fluid density inside a metallic object such as a high pressure spray nozzle is difficult. X-rays of sufficiently high energy to penetrate a metal object are not appreciably absorbed by the fluid inside. This requires the use of plastic or beryllium test sections, which are not suited to high pressure conditions. We present a high-energy X-ray fluorescence technique which can overcome this problem. The experiments were conducted at the 7-BM beamline of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. A hydrocarbon fluid was seeded with cerium nanoparticles. The fluid was pumped at high pressure through aluminum nozzles with inner diameters of 0.36–0.90 mm and wall thicknesses of 2–3 mm. A collimated, monochromatic 42.5 keV X-ray beam excited K-edge fluorescence from the cerium. The Kα emission lines at 34–35 keV were recorded by a cryogenic germanium detector. Changes in fluid density due to cavitation of the liquid inside the nozzle were measured by raster scanning the nozzle across the beam. A spatial resolution of 20 × 20 µm2 was achieved with a slitted beam, which was improved to 5 × 10 µm2 with X-ray focusing mirrors. The uncertainty in the path-integrated vapor fraction was 30–40 µm at 95% confidence. A limitation of this approach is that for low vapor pressure fluids, the nanoparticles increase the vapor pressure of the fluid and act as additional nucleation sites. These experiments demonstrate a path forward for measurements of multiphase flows inside metal components under conditions that are not feasible in optically accessible materials.

[EN] Gasoline direct injection (GDI) sprays are complex multiphase flows. When compared to multi-hole diesel sprays, the plumes are closely spaced, and the sprays are more likely to interact. The effects of multi-jet interaction on entrainment and spray targeting can be influenced by small variations in the mass fluxes from the holes, which in turn depend on transients in the needle movement and small-scale details of the internal geometry. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of a multi-institutional effort to experimentally characterize the internal geometry and near-nozzle flow of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray G gasoline injector. In order to develop a complete pictitre of the near-nozzle flow, a standardized setup was shared between facilities. A wide range of techniques were employed, including both X-ray and visible-light diagnostics. The novel aspects of this work include both new experimental measurements, and a comparison of the results across different techniques and facilities. The breadth and depth of the data reveal phenomena which were not apparent from analysis of the individual data sets. We show that plume-to-plume variations in the mass fluxes from the holes can cause large-scale asymmetries in the entrainment field and spray structure. Both internal flow transients and small-scale geometric features can have an effect on the external flow. The sharp turning angle of the flow into the holes also causes an inward vectoring of the plumes relative to the hole drill angle, which increases with time due to entrainment of gas into a low-pressure region between the plumes. These factors increase the likelihood of spray collapse with longer injection durations., The X-ray experiments were performed at the 7-BM and 32-ID beam lines of the APS at Argonne National Laboratory. The flow inside direct-injection diesel nozzles is strongly influenced by the local geometry. Deviations from the design geometry and nonuniformities along the fuel’s flow path can alter the expected spray behavior. The influence of small-scale variations in the internal geometry is not well understood due to a lack of data available to experimentalists and modelers that resolve such features. To address the need for more accurate geometry measurements that also quantify the error bounds on manufacturing variability, the 7-BM beamline of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory has been customized to obtain high-resolution X-ray tomography of injection nozzles. In this article, we present results for several diesel injectors provided by the Engine Combustion Network. The imaging setup was optimized to measure dense metallic samples at high signal-to-noise ratio using projection imaging. To improve contrast, multiple images were recorded at each rotation angle. Phase shifting effects, which amplify the uncertainty in locating nozzle boundaries, were minimized by reducing the propagation distance of the X-rays between the nozzle and detector. Such improvements to the imaging technique enabled the nozzle hole diameter to be measured with an accuracy of 1.8 µm, which takes into account the pixel resolution as well as the properties of the imaging setup and the geometric analysis. The high spatial resolution allows the nozzle hole inlet corner radius to be azimuthally resolved. For the sample set under consideration, these new measurements reveal that non-hydroground injectors have a distribution of radii which typically vary by more than a factor of two. An azimuthally varying radius of curvature at the hole inlet is expected to result in highly asymmetric cavitation. Skeletal wireframe models of the nozzle hole geometries suitable for computational fluid dynamics mesh generation have been developed, in addition to full three-dimensional isosurfaces; these data have been made publicly available online.

In this work, an outward-opening compressed natural gas, direct injection fuel injector has been studied with single-shot X-ray radiography. Three dimensional simulations have also been performed to compliment the X-ray data. Argon was used as a surrogate gas for experimental and safety reasons. This technique allows the acquisition of a quantitative mapping of the ensemble-average and standard deviation of the projected density throughout the injection event. Two dimensional, ensemble average and standard deviation data are presented to investigate the quasi-steady-state behavior of the jet. Upstream of the stagnation zone, minimal shot-to-shot variation is observed. Downstream of the stagnation zone, bulk mixing is observed as the jet transitions to a subsonic turbulent jet. From the time averaged data, individual slices at all downstream locations are extracted and an Abel inversion was performed to compute the radial density distribution, which was interpolated to create three dimensional visualizations. The Abel reconstructions reveal that upstream of the stagnation zone, the gas forms an annulus with high argon density and large density gradients. Inside this annulus, a recirculation region with low argon density exists. Downstream, the jet transitions to a fully turbulent jet with Gaussian argon density distributions. This experimental data is intended to serve as a quantitative benchmark for simulations.

Two techniques were used to study non-evaporating diesel sprays from common rail injectors which were equipped with twin-hole and single-hole nozzles for comparison. To characterise the sprays, high speed optical imaging and X-ray radiography were used. The former was performed at the Laboratory for Turbulence Research in Aerospace and Combustion (LTRAC) at Monash University, while the latter was performed at the 7-BM beamline of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. The optical imaging made use of high temporal, high spatial resolution spray recordings on a digital camera from which peripheral parameters in the initial injection phase were investigated based on edge detection. The X-ray radiography was used to explore quantitative mass distributions, which were measured on a point-wise basis at roughly similar sampling rate. Three twin-hole nozzles of different subtended angles and a single-hole nozzle were investigated at injection pressure of 1000 bar in environments of 20 bar back pressure. Evidence of strong cavitation was found for all nozzles examined with their CD ranging from 0.62 to 0.69. Penetration of the twin-hole nozzles was found to lag the single-hole nozzle, before the sprays merged. Switching in hole dominance was observed from one twin-hole nozzle, and this was accompanied by greater instability in mass flow during the transient opening phase of the injectors.

[EN] Post-injection fuel dribble is known to lead to incomplete atomisation and combustion due to the release of slow-moving, and often surface-bound, liquid fuel after the end of injection. This can have a negative effect on engine emissions, performance and injector durability. To better quantify this phenomenon, we developed an image-processing approach to measure the volume of ligaments produced during the end of injection. We applied our processing approach to an Engine Combustion Network 'Spray B' 3-hole injector, using datasets from 220 injections generated by different research groups, to decouple the effect of gas temperature and pressure on the fuel dribble process. High-speed X-ray phase-contrast images obtained at room temperature conditions (297 K) at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, together with diffused back-illumination images captured at a wide range of temperature conditions (293-900 K) by CMT Motores Termicos were analysed and compared quantitatively. We found a good agreement between image sets obtained by Argonne National Laboratory and CMT Motores Termicos using different imaging techniques. The maximum dribble volume within the field of view of the imaging system and the mean rate of fuel dribble were considered as characteristic parameters of the fuel dribble process. Analysis showed that the absolute mean dribble rate increases with temperature when injection pressure is higher than 1000 bar and slightly decreases at high injection pressures (>500 bar) when temperature is close to 293 K. International audience; The coherent component of turbulence in shock-containing flows undergoing aeroacous-tic resonance often displays a periodic spatial modulation. This modulation is generally thought to be driven either by the hydrodynamic/acoustic standing wave, or by the shock structures within the jet. In this work, we examine this spatial modulation and seek to determine its cause. Specifically, we consider whether the growth of the Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepackets associated with the resonance cycle is modulated by either of these mechanisms. A combined experimental and theoretical analysis is undertaken. Time-independent velocity snapshots of screeching jets are used to produce a reduced order model for the resonance via a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition. Streamwise Fourier filtering is then applied to isolate the negative and postive wavenumber componetns, which for this flow correspond to upstream and downstream-propagating waves. A global stability analysis on an experimentally derived base flow is conducted, producing remarkably similar results to those obtained via experiment. In both the global stability analysis and the experimental decomposition, three distinct structures are observed in the spatial wavenumber spectrum. One of these is associated with the downstream-propagating KH mode. One is associated with the upstream component of screech as previously identified. The third component has positive phase velocity, but a radial structure quite different to the other two waves. We provide evidence that this downstream-propagating wave is the result of an interaction between the KH wavepackets and the shocks embedded in the jet, much the same as the upstream-propagating acoustic wave, and has a structure very similar to duct-like modes previously identified in round jets. A weakly-non-parallel local analysis supplements the global analysis, and suggests that the growth of the KH wave is essentially un-modulated by the shocks, at least at the frequencies associated with screech.

In this paper we demonstrate that the use of multiple orifices can improve the fine particle fraction (FPF) of pressurised metered-dose inhaler solution formulations by up to 75% when compared to a single orifice with an equivalent cross sectional area ( p 0.05 ). While prior work has relied on metal actuator components, improvements in micro injection moulding and micro drilling now make it possible to mass produce novel orifice shapes to achieve similar FPF gains in plastic parts, with orifice diameters less than 0.2 mm. The ability to create internal features inside the actuator is also demonstrated. We show through in vitro high speed imaging that twin orifice sprays merge quickly and act as a single, modified plume. We also show for the first time that FPF and fine particle dose (FPD) are strongly correlated with the distance at which the plume velocity decays to half its initial value ( R 2 = 0.997 and 0.95 respectively). When plume velocity & FPF are increased, mouthpiece deposition decreases. This suggests that while smaller orifices produce more fine particles, higher sustained plume velocities also entrain more of the fine particles produced at the periphery of the spray due to increased shear. The effect occurs within the mouthpiece and is thus unlikely to alter the flow field in the upper airway.

[EN] Making quantitative measurements of the vapor distribution in a cavitating nozzle is difficult, owing to the strong scattering of visible light at gas-liquid boundaries and wall boundaries, and the small lengths and time scales involved. The transparent models required for optical experiments are also limited in terms of maximum pressure and operating life. Over the past few years, x-ray radiography experiments at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source have demonstrated the ability to perform quantitative measurements of the line of sight projected vapor fraction in submerged, cavitating plastic nozzles. In this paper, we present the results of new radiography experiments performed on a submerged beryllium nozzle which is 520m in diameter, with a length/diameter ratio of 6. Beryllium is a light, hard metal that is very transparent to x-rays due to its low atomic number. We present quantitative measurements of cavitation vapor distribution conducted over a range of non-dimensional cavitation and Reynolds numbers, up to values typical of gasoline and diesel fuel injectors. A novel aspect of this work is the ability to quantitatively measure the area contraction along the nozzle with high spatial resolution. Analysis of the vapor distribution, area contraction and discharge coefficients are made between the beryllium nozzle and plastic nozzles of the same nominal geometry. When gas is dissolved in the fuel, the vapor distribution can be quite different from that found in plastic nozzles of the same dimensions, although the discharge coefficients are unaffected. In the beryllium nozzle, there were substantially fewer machining defects to act as nucleation sites for the precipitation of bubbles from dissolved gases in the fuel, and as such the effect on the vapor distribution was greatly reduced., Raul Payri was funded by a Fulbright visiting scholar grant in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain (reference PRX14/00331) while performing this work. A computational study was performed to investigate the influence of transient needle motion on gasoline direct injection (GDI) internal nozzle flow and near-field sprays. Simulations were conducted with a compressible Eulerian flow solver modeling liquid, vapor, and non-condensable gas phases with a diffuse interface. Variable rate generation and condensation of fuel vapor were captured using the homogeneous relaxation model (HRM). The non-flashing (spray G) and flashing (spray G2) conditions specified by the Engine Combustion Network were modeled using the nominal spray G nozzle geometry. Transient needle lift and wobble were based upon ensemble averaged X-ray imaging preformed at Argonne National Lab. The minimum needle lift simulated was 5 µm and dynamic mesh motion was achieved with Laplacian smoothing. The results were qualitatively validated against experimental imaging and the experimental rate of injection profile was captured accurately using pressure boundary conditions and needle motion to actuate the injection. Low needle lift is shown to result in vapor generation near the injector seat. Finally, the internal injector flow is shown to be highly complex, containing many transient and interacting vortices which result in perturbations in the spray angle and fluctuations in the mass flux. This complex internal flow also results in intermittent string flash-boiling when a strong vortex is injected and the resulting swirling spray contains a thermal non-equilibrium vapor core.

Internal combustion engines have been and still are key players in today's world. Ever increasing fuel consumption standards and the ongoing concerns about exhaust emissions have pushed the industry to research new concepts and develop new technologies that address these challenges. To this end, the diesel direct injection system has recently seen the introduction of direct-acting piezoelectric injectors, which provide engineers with direct control over the needle lift, and thus instantaneous rate of injection (ROI). Even though this type of injector has been studied previously, no direct link between the instantaneous needle lift and the resulting rate of injection has been quantified. This study presents an experimental analysis of the relationship between instantaneous partial needle lifts and the corresponding ROI. A prototype direct-acting injector was utilized to produce steady injections of different magnitude by partially lifting the needle. The ROI measurements were carried out at CMT-Motores Termicos utilizing a standard injection rate discharge curve indicator based on the Bosch method (anechoic tube). The needle lift measurements were performed at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. The analysis seeks both to contribute to the current understanding of the influence that partial needle lifts have over the instantaneous ROI and to provide experimental data with parametric variations useful for numerical model validations. Results show a strong relationship between the steady partial needle lift and the ROI. The effect is non-linear, and also strongly dependent on the injection pressure. The steady lift value at which the needle ceases to influence the ROI increases with the injection pressure. Finally, a transient analysis is presented, showing that the needle velocity may considerably affect the instantaneous ROI, because of the volume displaced inside the nozzle. Results presented in this study show that at constant injection pressure and energizing time, this injector has the potential to control many aspects of the ROI and thus, the heat release rate. Drug concentration measurements in MDI sprays are typically performed using particle filtration or laser scattering. These techniques are ineffective in proximity to the nozzle, making it difficult to determine how factors such as nozzle design will affect the precipitation of co-solvent droplets in solution-based MDIs, and the final particle distribution. In optical measurements, scattering from the constituents is difficult to separate. We present a novel technique to directly measure drug distribution. A focused x-ray beam was used to stimulate x-ray fluorescence from the bromine in a solution containing 85% HFA, 15% ethanol co-solvent, and 1 $$ \mu \mathrm{g} $$ / $$ \mu \kern-.5pt \mathrm{L} $$ IPBr. Instantaneous concentration measurements were obtained with 1 ms temporal resolution and 5 $$ \mu \mathrm{m} $$ spatial resolution, providing information in a region that is inaccessible to many other diagnostics. The drug remains homogeneously mixed over time, but was found to be higher at the centerline than at the periphery. This may have implications for oropharyngeal deposition in vivo. Measurements in the dynamic, turbulent region of MDIs allow us to understand the physical links between formulation, inspiration, and geometry on final particle size and distribution. This will ultimately lead to a better understanding of how MDI design can be improved to enhance respirable fraction.

An annular liquid sheet surrounded by parallel co-flowing gas is an effective atomiser. However, the initial instabilities which determine the primary break-up of the liquid sheet are not well understood. Lack of agreement on the influence of the boundary conditions and the non-dimension scaling of the initial instability persists between theoretical stability analyses and experiments, since there is little experimental data available on the near-field behaviour of the instability. To address this matter, we have undertaken an experimental parametric study of an aerodynamically-driven, non-swirling annular water sheet. The effects of sheet thickness, inner and outer gas–liquid momentum ratio were investigated over an order of magnitude variation in Reynolds and Weber number. From high-speed image correlation measurements in the near-nozzle region, we propose new empirical correlations for the frequency of the instability as a function of the total gas–liquid momentum ratio, with good non-dimensional collapse. From analysis of the instability velocity probability densities, we find two persistent and distinct superimposed instabilities with different growth rates. The first is a short-lived, rapidly saturating sawtooth-like instability. The second is a slower-growing stochastic instability which persists through the break-up of the sheet. The presence of multiple instabilities whose growth rates do not strongly correlate with the shear velocities may explain some of the discrepancies between experiments and stability analyses.

[EN] In order to improve understanding of the primary atomization process for diesel-like sprays, a collaborative experimental and computational study was focused on the near-nozzle spray structure for the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray D single-hole injector. These results were presented at the 5th Workshop of the ECN in Detroit, Michigan. Application of x-ray diagnostics to the Spray D standard cold condition enabled quantification of distributions of mass, phase interfacial area, and droplet size in the near-nozzle region from 0.1 to 14 mm from the nozzle exit. Using these data, several modeling frameworks, from Lagrangian-Eulerian to Eulerian-Eulerian and from Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) to Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), were assessed in their ability to capture and explain experimentally observed spray details. Due to its computational efficiency, the Lagrangian-Eulerian approach was able to provide spray predictions across a broad range of conditions. In general, this "engineering-level" simulation was able to reproduce the details of the droplet size distribution throughout the spray after calibration of the spray breakup model constants against the experimental data. Complementary to this approach, higher-fidelity modeling techniques were able to provide detailed insight into the experimental trends. For example, interface-capturing multiphase simulations were able to capture the experimentally observed bimodal behavior in the transverse interfacial area distributions in the near-nozzle region. Further analysis of the spray predictions suggests that peaks in the interfacial area distribution may coincide with regions of finely atomized droplets, whereas local minima may coincide with regions of continuous liquid structures. The results from this study highlight the potential of x-ray diagnostics to reveal salient details of the near-nozzle spray structure and to guide improvements to existing primary atomization modeling approaches.

[EN] Gasoline direct injection (GDI) nozzles are manufactured to meet geometric specifications with length scales on the order of a few hundred microns. The machining tolerances of these nominal dimensions are not always known due to the difficulty in accurately measuring such small length scales in a nonintrusive fashion. To gain insight into the variability of the machined dimensions as well as any effects that this variability may have on the fuel spray behavior, a series of measurements of the internal geometry and fuel mass distribution were performed on a set of eight nominally duplicate GDI “Spray G” nozzles provided by the Engine Combustion Network. The key dimensions of each of the eight nozzle holes were measured with micron resolution using full spectrum x-ray tomographic imaging at the 7-BM beamline of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. Fuel density distributions at 2 mm downstream of the nozzle tips were obtained by performing x-ray radiography measurements for many lines of sight. The density measurements reveal nozzle-to-nozzle as well as hole-to-hole density variations. The combination of high-resolution geometry and fuel distribution datasets allows spray phenomena to be linked to specific geometric characteristics of the nozzle, such as variability in the hole lengths and counterbore diameters, and the hole inlet corner radii. This analysis provides important insight into which geometrical characteristics of the nozzles may have the greatest importance in the development of the injected sprays, and to what degree these geometric variations might account for the total spray variability. The goal of this work is then to further the understanding of the relationship between internal nozzle geometry and fuel injection, provide input to improve computational models, and ultimately aid in optimizing injector design for higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions engines., This research was performed at the 7-BM beamline of the APS at Argonne National Laboratory. [EN] Post-injection dribble is known to lead to incomplete atomisation and combustion due to the release of slow moving, and often surface-bound, liquid fuel after the end of the injection event. This can have a negative effect on engine emissions, performance, and injector durability. To better quantify this phenomenon we present a new image processing approach to quantify the volume and surface area of ligaments produced during the end of injection, for an ECN ‘Spray B’ 3-hole injector. Circular approximation for cross-sections was used to estimate three-dimensional parameters of droplets and ligaments. The image processing consisted in three stages: edge detection, morphological reconstruction, and 3D reconstruction. For the last stage of 3D reconstruction, smooth surfaces were obtained by computation of the alpha shape which represents a bounding volume enveloping a set of 3D points. The object model was verified by calculation of surface area and volume from 2D images of figures with well-known shapes. We show that the object model fits non-spherical droplets and pseudo-cylindrical ligaments reasonably well. We applied our processing approach to datasets generated by different research groups to decouple the effect of gas temperature and pressure on the fuel dribble process. High-speed X-ray phase-contrast images obtained at room temperature conditions (297 K) at the 7-ID beamline of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, together with diffused back-illumination (DBI) images captured at a wide range of temperature conditions (293-900 K) by CMT Motores Térmicos, were analysed and compared quantitatively., This work was supported by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Science Research Council [grants EP/K020528/1 and EP/M009424/1], and BP Formulated Products Technology. Non-volatile agents such as glycerol are being introduced into solution-based pMDI formulations in order to control mean precipitant droplet size. To assess their biopharmaceutical efficacy, both microscopic and macroscopic characteristics of the plume must be known, including the effects of external factors such as the flow generated by the patient's inhalation. We test the hypothesis that the macroscopic properties (e.g. spray geometry) of a pMDI spray can be predicted using a self-similarity model, avoiding the need for repeated testing.Glycerol-containing and glycerol-free pMDI formulations with matched mass median aerodynamic diameters are investigated. High-speed schlieren imaging is used to extract time-resolved velocity, penetration and spreading angle measurements of the pMDI spray plume. The experimental data are used to validate the analytical model.The pMDI spray develops in a manner characteristic of a fully-developed steady turbulent jet, supporting the hypothesis. Equivalent glycerol-containing and non glycerol-containing formulations exhibit similar non-dimensional growth rates and follow a self-similar scaling behaviour over a range of physiologically relevant co-flow rates.Using the proposed model, the mean leading edge penetration, velocity and spreading rate of a pMDI spray may be estimated a priori for any co-flow conditions. The effects of different formulations are captured in two scaling constants. This allows formulators to predict the effects of variation between pMDIs without the need for repeated testing. Ultimately, this approach will allow pharmaceutical scientists to rapidly test a number of variables during pMDI development.

Understanding the factors that lead to breakup of liquid droplets is of interest in many applications. Liquid droplet breakup processes are typically broken into regimes based on a Weber number calculated based on an average flow velocity ( Solsvik et al., 2013 ). In turbulent flows, the instantaneous velocity may differ significantly from the average velocity. Here an experimental investigation on the role of turbulence in the breakup process is undertaken, whose continuous phase is gas. The turbulence is produced by confined counterflow into which the droplets fall. Droplet breakup mode is visualized by high speed camera, and the turbulence of counterflow is measured by Particle Image Velocimetry. The experimental results show that the breakup morphology and mode frequency varies with the turbulence intensity of the counterflow.

Non-intrusive temporally and spatially resolved measurements of dynamic phenomena are heavily reliant on high-speed (>1 kHz) digital scientific cameras. The cost of these cameras is a major constraint on the operation of many experimental and educational research facilities. In this paper we present a performance analysis of a low-cost high-speed CMOS camera, the 1.4. Developed for consumer use, we investigate its potential as a scientific camera. It uses a 12 bit CMOS sensor with px at 6.6 pitch and 1 minimum global shutter. It is capable of recording at 1057 Hz at full frame and up to 38 kHz with a reduced field of view. It provides a number of features not typically found in low-cost consumer cameras, such as external triggering and shutter gating control, clock outputs, and raw binary data output. We test the linearity of the sensor response using a pulsed LED source and analyse the sensor performance in terms of noise, jitter and intensity lag. A quantitative demonstration of the camera's performance under realistic experimental conditions is demonstrated with an image correlation velocimetry measurement in a high-speed propellant spray. The camera compares favourably against several scientific high speed cameras from major manufacturers. The camera is well suited for high resolution forward-scattering and in-line imaging techniques such as schlieren, shadowgraphy, holography and bright-field microscopy. Spatial bias in the dark field noise floor makes it generally unsuitable for low-light measurement conditions. However, the small footprint and low cost make it ideal as an educational tool and for multi-camera experiments. These tests were conducted independently of the manufacturer and the authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose.

Cavitation plays an important role in the formation of sprays in fuel injection systems. With the increasing use of gasoline–ethanol blends, there is a need to understand how changes in fluid properties due to the use of these fuels can alter cavitation behavior. Gasoline–ethanol blends are azeotropic mixtures whose properties are difficult to model. We have tabulated the thermodynamic properties of gasoline–ethanol blends using a method developed for flash-boiling simulations. The properties of neat gasoline and ethanol were obtained from National Institute of Standards and Technology REFPROP data, and blends from 0% to 85% ethanol by mass have been tabulated. We have undertaken high-resolution three-dimensional numerical simulations of cavitating flow in a 500-µm-diameter submerged nozzle using the in-house HRMFoam homogeneous relaxation model constructed from the OpenFOAM toolkit. The simulations are conducted at 1 MPa inlet pressure and atmospheric outlet pressure, corresponding to a cavitation number range of 1.066–1.084 and a Reynolds number range of 15,000–40,000. For the pure gasoline case, the numerical simulations are compared with synchrotron X-ray radiography measurements. Despite significant variation in the fluid properties, the distribution of cavitation vapor in the nozzle is relatively unaffected by the gasoline–ethanol ratio. The vapor remains attached to the nozzle wall, resulting in an unstable annular two-phase jet in the outlet. Including turbulence at the conditions studied does not significantly change mixing behavior, because the thermal nonequilibrium at the vapor–liquid interfaces acts to low-pass filter the turbulent fluctuations in both the nozzle boundary layer and jet mixing layer.

[EN] Measurements of droplet size in optically-thick, non-evaporating, shear-driven sprays have been made using ultra-small angle x-ray scattering (USAXS). The sprays are produced by orifice-type nozzles coupled to diesel injectors, with measurements conducted from 1 - 24 mm from the orifice, spanning from the optically-dense near-nozzle region to more dilute regions where optical diagnostics are feasible. The influence of nozzle diameter, liquid injection pressure, and ambient density were examined. The USAXS measurements reveal few if any nanoscale droplets, in conflict with a popular computational model of diesel spray breakup. The average droplet diameter rapidly decreases with downstream distance from the nozzle until a plateau value is reached, after which only small changes are seen in droplet diameter. This plateau droplet size is consistent with the droplets being small enough to be stable with respect to further breakup. Liquid injection pressure and nozzle diameter have the biggest impact on droplet size, while ambient density has a smaller effect. [EN] Diesel spray modelling still remains a challenge, especially in the dense near-nozzle region. This region is difficult to experimentally access and also to model due to the complex and rapid liquid and gas interaction. Modelling approaches based on Lagrangian particle tracking have struggled in this area, while Eulerian modelling has proven particularly useful. An interesting approach is the single-fluid diffuse interface model known as Σ-Y, based on scale separation assumptions at high Reynolds and Weber numbers. Liquid dispersion is modelled as turbulent mixing of a variable density flow. The concept of surface area density is used for representing liquid structures, regardless of the complexity of the interface. In this work, an implementation of the Σ-Y model in the OpenFOAM CFD library is applied to simulate the ECN Spray A in the near nozzle region, using both RANS and LES turbulence modelling. Assessment is performed with measurements conducted at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The dynamics of dissolved gas and cavitation are strongly coupled, yet these phenomena are difficult to measure in-situ. Both create voids in the fluid that can be difficult to distinguish. We present an application of X-ray fluorescence in which liquid density and total noncondensible gas concentration (both dissolved and nucleated) are simultaneously measured. The liquid phase is doped with 400 ppm of a bromine tracer, and dissolved air is removed and substituted with krypton. Fluorescent emission at X-ray wavelengths is simultaneously excited from the Br and Kr with a focused monochromatic X-ray beam from a synchrotron source. We measure the flow in a cavitating nozzle 0.5 mm in diameter. From Br fluorescence, total displacement of the liquid is measured. From Kr fluorescence, the mass fraction of both dissolved and nucleated gas is measured. Volumetric displacement of liquid due to both cavitation and gas precipitation can be separated through estimation of the local equilibrium dissolved mass fraction. The uncertainty in the line of sight projected densities of the liquid and gas phases is 4–6 %. The high fluorescence yields and energies of Br and Kr allow small mass fractions of gas to be measured, down to 10−5, with an uncertainty of 8 %. These quantitative measurements complement existing optical diagnostic techniques and provide new insight into the diffusion of gas into cavitation bubbles, which can increase their internal density, pressure and lifetimes by orders of magnitude.

Sprays from pressurised metered-dose inhalers are produced by a transient discharge of a multiphase mixture. Small length and short time scales have made the investigation of the governing processes difficult. Consequently, a deep understanding of the physical processes that govern atomisation and drug particle formation has been elusive. X-ray phase contrast imaging and quantitative radiography were used to reveal the internal flow structure and measure the time-variant nozzle exit mass density of 50 µL metered sprays of HFA134a, with and without ethanol cosolvent. Internal flow patterns were imaged at a magnification of 194 pixels/mm and 7759 frames per second with 150 ps temporal resolution. Spray projected mass was measured with temporal resolution of 1 ms and spatial resolution 6 µm × 5 µm. The flow upstream of the nozzle comprised large volumes of vapour at all times throughout the injection. The inclusion of ethanol prevented bubble coalescence, altering the internal flow structure and discharge. Radiography measurements confirmed that the nozzle exit area is dominantly occupied by vapour, with a peak liquid volume fraction of 13%. Vapour generation in pMDIs occurs upstream of the sump, and the dominant volume component in the nozzle exit orifice is vapour at all times in the injection. The flow in ethanol-containing pMDIs has a bubbly structure resulting in a comparatively stable discharge, whereas the binary structure of propellant-only flows results in unsteady discharge and the production of unrespirable liquid masses.

The aerodynamically driven annular liquid sheet exhibits a complex nonlinear instability. Novel interfacial velocimetry experiments suggest that two distinct physical sources of instability may be present. The first is the well-known free shear layer instability, which is quasi-sinusoidal and nonlinear. The second is a distinct nonlinear rupturing instability, modulated on the previous one. It may be directly driving primary atomization. This instability has not been previously observed in isolation and is inherently nonlinear and non-sinusoidal. Novel application of Koopman analysis and the Hilbert transform permit investigation of these distinct instabilities. A greater understanding of the rupturing instability may lead to a better understanding of atomization phenomena.

Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is a new diagnostic technique in fluid mechanics which is growing in popularity. A powerful analysis tool, it has great potential for measuring the spatial and temporal dynamics of coherent structures in experimental fluid flows. To aid interpretation of experimental data, error-bars on the measured growth rates are needed. In this article, we undertake a massively parallel error analysis of the DMD algorithm using synthetic waveforms that are shown to be representative of the canonical instabilities observed in shear flows. We show that the waveform of the instability has a marked impact on the error of the measured growth rate. Sawtooth and square waves may have an order of magnitude larger error than sine waves under the same conditions. We also show that the effects of data quantity and quality are of critical importance in determining the error in the growth or decay rate, and that the effect of the key parametric variables are modulated by the growth rate itself. We further demonstrate methods by which ensemble and orthogonal data may be introduced to improve the noise response. With regard for the important variables, precise measurement of the growth rates of instabilities may be supplemented with an accurately estimated uncertainty. This opens many new possibilities for the measurement of coherent structure in shear flows.
