Horseradish is a globally well-known and appreciated medicinal and aromatic plant. The health benefits of this plant have been appreciated in traditional European medicine since ancient times. Various studies have investigated the remarkable phytotherapeutic properties of horseradish and its aromatic profile. However, relatively few studies have been conducted on Romanian horseradish, and they mainly refer to the ethnomedicinal or dietary uses of the plant. This study reports the first complete low-molecular-weight metabolite profile of Romanian wild-grown horseradish. A total of ninety metabolites were identified in mass spectra (MS)-positive mode from nine secondary metabolite categories (glucosilates, fatty acids, isothiocyanates, amino acids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, coumarins, and miscellaneous). In addition, the biological activity of each class of phytoconstituents was discussed. Furthermore, the development of a simple target phyto-carrier system that collectively exploits the bioactive properties of horseradish and kaolinite is reported. An extensive characterization (FT-IR, XRD, DLS, SEM, EDS, and zeta potential) was performed to investigate the morpho-structural properties of this new phyto-carrier system. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using a combination of three in vitro, non-competitive methods (total phenolic assay, 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay, and phosphomolybdate (total antioxidant capacity)). The antioxidant assessment indicated the stronger antioxidant properties of the new phyto-carrier system compared with its components (horseradish and kaolinite). The collective results are relevant to the theoretical development of novel antioxidant agent fields with potential applications on antitumoral therapeutic platforms.

Novel hybrid inorganic CoFe2O4/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) polymeric framework nanobeads-type adsorbents with tailored magnetic properties were synthesized by a combination of coprecipitation and flash-cooling technology. Precise self-assembly engineering of their shape and composition combined with deep testing for cadmium removal from wastewater are investigated. The development of a single nanoscale object with controllable composition and spatial arrangement of CoFe2O4 (CF) nanoparticles in carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as polymeric matrix, is giving new boosts to treatments of wastewaters containing heavy metals. The magnetic nanobeads were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and vibrational sample magnetometer (VSM). The magnetic properties of CF@CMC sample clearly exhibit ferromagnetic nature. Value of 40.6 emu/g of saturation magnetization would be exploited for magnetic separation from aqueous solution. In the adsorptions experiments the assessment of equilibrium and kinetic parameters were carried out by varying adsorbent dosage, contact time and cadmium ion concentration. The kinetic behavior of adsorption process was best described by pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm was fitted best with maximum capacity uptake of 44.05 mg/g.

The present study, highlights essentially a phenomenon rarely encountered in NiFe2O4 nanoparticles self-assembled in the presence of organic azo dye (i.e. Methyl orange). To the best of our knowledge, NiFe2O4 nanoparticles with fibrous morphology is unprecedent. Unexpected features of solid-state morphology changes from zero-dimensional to quasi one-dimensional and back again were evaluated by applying a wide range of complementary physico-chemical characterization techniques to unequivocally assess the nature of the self-assembly process. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the reversibility of the above-mentioned process, under various applied conditions. Zero-dimensional nickel ferrite nanoparticles (as-synthesized) are assembled into quasi one-dimensional fibers, uniformly distributed in all three directions by adsorption of Methyl orange (MO) dye, with texture preserved after the photocatalytic process, and finally it returns to the initial appearance (zero dimensional) by applying a thermal treatment. The presented results may contribute to photocatalyst development by in/ex-situ tuning the morphology of the material, which allows active sites to spread over a wide internal surfaces and pores which, in turn, enhance the photodegradation ability of the catalyst.
