Religious forms of environmental advocacy started emerging in the United States in the 1990s, seemingly within all branches of American Christianity, creating hope, both among these emerging movements and among secular environmental advocacy groups, that this would bring new constituencies to bear, constituencies with the moral authority to make ethical demands for environmental protection. It has led to persistent theorizing that religions, including Christianity, are about to intervene in a way that will alter the political situation and increase public demand for climate change action and environmental protection generally. So far this has not transpired. To investigate why, between 2016 and 2018, I did field work in congregations in Arizona (a Republican dominated state) and California (a state with strong Democratic Party influence). I divided my visits between a fundamentalist confederation of churches (Calvary Chapels) and liberal congregations affiliated with The Center for Progressive Christianity, an affiliation of liberal congregations (primarily United Church of Christ, Episcopalian) where more naturalistic, non-supernatural understandings of Christianity are more common. In interviewed pastors, church members, and key leaders within religious environmentalism, and conducted three direct focus groups. I also viewed a substantial number of online sermons posted at church websites. I found substantial indifference or outright hostility to environmental concerns and climate mitigation at all of my Calvary Chapel sites, due especially to intense apocalyptic expectation of imminent rapture. Other factors included belief in sovereignity of God (the idea the God causes all events), a tendency toward collective narcissism and and susceptibility to conspiracy theories. Progressive congregations were open to environmental concerns, talked about their importance, but ultimately were minimally involved. Social justice issues and the immediate needs of the homeless, immigrants, and advocating for LGBTQ equality in most cases took precedence.

In mountain areas, both the ecosystem and the local population highly depend on water availability. However, water storage dynamics in mountains is challenging to assess because it is highly variable both in time and space. This calls for innovative observation methods that can tackle such measurement challenge. Among them, gravimetry is particularly well-suited as it is directly sensitive–in the sense it does not require any petrophysical relationship–to temporal changes in water content occurring at surface or underground at an intermediate spatial scale (i.e., in a radius of 100 m). To provide constrains on water storage changes in a small headwater catchment (Strengbach catchment, France), we implemented a hybrid gravity approach combining in-situ precise continuous gravity monitoring using a superconducting gravimeter, with relative time-lapse gravity made with a portable Scintrex CG5 gravimeter over a network of 16 stations. This paper presents the resulting spatio-temporal changes in gravity and discusses them in terms of spatial heterogeneities of water storage. We interpret the spatio-temporal changes in gravity by means of: (i) a topography model which assumes spatially homogeneous water storage changes within the catchment, (ii) the topographic wetness index, and (iii) for the first time to our knowledge in a mountain context, by means of a physically based distributed hydrological model. This study therefore demonstrates the ability of hybrid gravimetry to assess the water storage dynamics in a mountain hydrosystem and shows that it provides observations not presumed by the applied physically based distributed hydrological model.

The Theistareykir geothermal field is located in North Iceland on the Mid-Atlantic ridge. A power plant produces 90 MWe using two 45 MWe turbines in operation since autumn 2017 and spring 2018, respectively. We performed hybrid microgravity measurements from 2017 to 2019 to monitor the short-term mass redistribution induced by geothermal production. Time-lapse microgravity surveys conducted each summer with a Scintrex CG5 gravimeter reveal the spatial gravity variations with respect to a reference, where the temporal gravity changes are monitored by absolute gravity measurements done with FG5#206 from Micro-g Solutions. In parallel, continuous gravity changes are recorded by a network of several GWR Instruments iGrav superconducting gravimeters and spring gravimeter, located in the injection and production areas. A height correction is applied to the gravity data using InSAR and GNSS measurements. We notice a regular residual gravity decrease in the production area versus a stable behaviour in the injection area. Time-lapse gravity measurements reveal a minimum residual decrease of − 38 ± 10 µGal (1 µGal = 10–8 m s−2) in 2019 with respect to 2017. Simplistic forward modelling of the produced geothermal fluid using a multiple Mogi sphere model can partly explain the residual gravity decrease. This suggest that a significant part of the injected geothermal fluid flows away, maybe drained by the Tjarnarás fault to the South where an increase of the water table level is observed. However, further modelling work is needed to confirm this.

SUMMARY Although the Dead Sea Transform (DST) fault system has been extensively studied in the past, little has been known about the present-day kinematics of its southernmost portion that is offshore in the Gulf of Aqaba. Here, we present a new GPS velocity field based on three surveys conducted between 2015 and 2019 at 30 campaign sites, complemented by 11 permanent stations operating near the gulf coast. Interseismic models of strain accumulation indicate a slip rate of $4.9^{+0.9}_{-0.6}~\mathrm{ mm}\,\mathrm{ yr}^{-1}$ and a locking depth of $6.8^{+3.5}_{-3.1}~\mathrm{ km}$ in the gulf’s northern region. Our results further indicate an apparent reduction of the locking depth from the inland portion of the DST towards its southern junction with the Red Sea rift. Our modelling results reveal a small systematic left-lateral residual motion that we postulate is caused by, at least in part, late post-seismic transient motion from the 1995 MW 7.2 Nuweiba earthquake. Estimates of the moment accumulation rate on the main faults in the gulf, other than the one that ruptured in 1995, suggest that they might be near the end of their current interseismic period, implying elevated seismic hazard in the gulf area.

SUMMARY Assessing the spatial and temporal heterogeneity in subsurface water storage has strong societal and environmental implications, as it is key to assess the water availability for the ecosystem and society. This challenge is especially significant in mountainous areas, where the local population totally depends on springwater as a freshwater resource, while water storage dynamics is complex to evaluate because it exhibits spatiotemporal heterogeneities on all scales as a result of the topography. In this study, we compare the water balance of a headwater granitic catchment (CWB) with water storage changes assessed from in situ continuous gravity monitoring using an iGrav superconducting gravimeter (SGWSC) located at the summit of the catchment. We show that SGWSC and CWB exhibit a similar annual cycle, although they deviate in the months following winter peak flow events. We investigate the reasons for these discrepancies using a tank model adjusted to the SG signal. This shows that during these events, the effective discharge in the SG footprint area is much lower than the catchment streamflow. We attribute this difference in the drainage term to a lower contribution of the upper part of the catchment to the generation of peak flow, compared to the lower part.

This research investigates how gay men ‘pass’ through their everyday lives by constructing heteronormative appearances with clothing. In a so-called ‘neoliberal’ landscape, it seeks to understand the motivations behind gay men’s continued constructions of hegemonic masculinity, which are often limiting and oppressive. To do so, twelve gay men residing in Toronto, Ontario were interviewed on their masculine dress choices. By engaging with their clothing, these men revealed how cultural stereotypes of ‘gay’ have evolved and developed, how gay men experiment with fashion and a new tailoring of masculinity that aims at diminishing – historical – stigmatized perceptions of homosexuality. This research contributes knowledge to the field of fashion and masculinity by exploring how gay men, from past to present, use clothing to survive within heterosexual frameworks.

In mountainous area, spring water constitutes the only drinking water resource and local economy is highly dependent on forest health and productivity. However, climate change is expected to make extreme water shortage episodes more and more frequent. Forest is therefore more and more exposed to water stress. It appears necessary to quantify the drought induced by water deficit to evaluate forest vulnerability and to plan the future of forest management. In this study we quantified the 2018 water deficit experienced by the forest in the Strengbach catchment, located in the French Vosges mountains. Three methods for estimating catchment water storage changes (WSC) have been compared. The first relies on superconducting gravimeter monitoring while the second relies on catchment water balance. The third one relies on global hydrological model MERRA2. We show that WSC estimated from measured gravity changes correlate well with WSC estimated from catchment water balance while WSC inferred from MERRA2 significantly differs. The Strengbach catchment water cycle is mostly annual but exhibits significant interannual variability associated with the 2018 drought episode: August 2018 has a water deficit of 37 mm (as inferred from catchment water balance) or 76 mm (as seen with superconducting gravimetry) compared to August 2017. We illustrate here the use of superconducting gravimeter monitoring as an independent proxy for WSC in a mountainous catchment while most of hydro-gravimetric studies have been conducted on relatively flat areas. We therefore contribute to expand the area of use of high precision gravity monitoring for the hydrological characterization of the critical zone in mountainous context. This innovative method may help to assess forest vulnerability to drought in the context of climate change.

The Dead Sea Transform fault forms the boundary between the Arabian plate and the Sinai-Levant subplate. Several aspects of this fault system have been extensively studied during the last century. However, the present-day kinematics and deformation along its southern end in the Gulf of Aqaba remain poorly understood. Here we present a crustal motion velocity field based on three GPS surveys conducted between 2015 and 2019 at 30 campaign sites, complemented by 12 permanent stations operating near the gulf. We constrained a pole of rotation for the Sinai-Levant subplate based on five selected stations on the Sinai Peninsula. This Euler pole predicts a left-lateral slip rate of ~4.5 mm/yr on the fault system in the gulf, consistent with earlier findings. We find that standard models of interseismic deformation, such as back-slip and screw dislocation models do not provide a reasonable constraint on fault locking depths due to limited near-fault measurements. Despite this, our results reveal a small (~1 mm/yr) but systematic left-lateral residual motion across the gulf that cannot be resolved by elastic models of strain accumulation. We further find that the orientation of these residuals agrees with modelled postseismic transient motions caused by the 1995 MW 7.2 Nuweiba earthquake in the NE and SW quadrants relative to the gulf trend. Combined, these observations suggest that postseismic deformation caused by the Nuweiba earthquake may still be ongoing. We anticipate our findings to be a starting point for future geodetic studies in the northern Red Sea region where large-scale infrastructure mega-projects, such as the NEOM city and the King Salman bridge across the gulf are being developed. Future studies would benefit from incorporating additional GPS stations on the Sinai side of the gulf, refined finite-fault models, seafloor geodetic measurements and better information about past earthquakes.

The plate boundary in the western Mediterranean includes the Tunisian Atlas Mountains. We study the active deformation of this area using GPS data collected from 2014 to 2018. WNW to NNW trending velocities express the crustal motion and geodetic strain field from the Sahara platform to the Tell Atlas, consistent with the African plate convergence. To the south, the velocities indicate a nearly WNW-ESE trending right-lateral motion of the Sahara fault-related fold belt with respect to the Sahara Platform. Further north and northeast, the significant decrease in velocities between the Eastern Platform and Central – Tell Atlas marks the NNW trending shortening deformation associated with local ENE – WSW extension visible in the Quaternary grabens. The velocity field and strain distribution associated with the active E-W trending right-lateral faulting and NE-SW fault-related folds sustain the existence of three main tectonic blocks and related transpression tectonics. The velocity field and pattern of active deformation in Tunisia document the oblique plate convergence of Africa towards Eurasia.

Anthropogenic pressures on the marine environment have escalated and shellfish habitats have declined around the world. Recently, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have rapidly increased in number and extent, but in Europe as elsewhere, management baselines rarely account for historical conditions.In the present study, the Dornoch Firth protected area (NE Scotland) was investigated as well as three adjacent inlets and 50 km of open coastline. The area has low levels of industrial development, is sparsely populated and conservation features were previously considered “Favourable”. The aim of the present study was to investigate the historical presence of native oyster (Ostrea edulis) beds, a habitat that is now rare and of conservation importance throughout Atlantic Europe.Centred on the protected area, but also gathering broader information from East Scotland, an interdisciplinary review was made of archaeological records, navigational charts, historical maps, museum collections, land-use records, fisheries records, public online databases and naturalists’ records. Intertidal and subtidal surveys were also conducted and sample oyster shells were radiocarbon dated.The present study shows that O. edulis occurred in the inlets and open coast areas of NE Scotland, and specifically in the protected area: Probably since the end of the last glaciation to the late 1800s when they were likely fished to extinction. Habitat restoration in protected areas is an emerging global theme. However, marine habitat restoration is highly unusual and European oyster restoration is presently confined to remnant populations with a clear history of exploitation or dwindling associated fisheries. An interdisciplinary review of baselines will probably show scope for O. edulis restoration in many other European MPAs.

International audience; We investigate a nearly 8-year record (2010-2018) of the superconducting gravimeter OSG-060 located at Djougou (Benin, West Africa). We first perform a tidal analysis with ET34-ANA v7.1 software that leads to the gravimetric amplitude and phase factors for all separable waves according to the available time duration. We test nine different ocean tide models for the main eleven tidal constituents (Ssa, Mm, Mf, Q1, O1, P1, K1, N2, M2, S2, K2). After correction for ocean tidal loading we obtain the real and imaginary parts of the residual vector. We also investigate atmospheric loading which is dominated in this equatorial location by the thermal waves S1 and S2 that are modulated in amplitude by annual and semi-annual components. After correction for ocean loading, we test different air pressure corrections on the tidal gravimetric factors for the waves Sa, Ssa, S1 and S2. We show the rather large discrepancy that exists between the classical single admittance pressure reduction and a hybrid model using global atmospheric models everywhere except in the local zone where the model pressure is replaced by the observed pressure.

SUMMARY We analyse a nearly 8-yr record (2010–2018) of the superconducting gravimeter OSG-060 located at Djougou (Benin, West Africa). After tidal analysis removing all solid Earth and ocean loading tidal contributions and correcting for the long-term instrumental drift and atmospheric loading, we obtain a gravity residual signal which is essentially a hydrological signal due to the monsoon. This signal is first compared to several global hydrology models (ERA, GLDAS and MERRA). Our superconducting gravimeter residual signal is also superimposed onto episodic absolute gravity measurements and to space gravimetry GRACE data. A further comparison is done using local hydrological data like soil moisture in the very superficial layer (0–1.2 m), water table depth and rainfall. The temporal evolution of the correlation coefficient between the gravity observation and both the soil moisture and the water table is well explained by the direct infiltration process of rain water together with the lateral transfer discharging the water table. Finally, we compute the water storage changes (WSC) using a simulation based on the physically based Parflow-CLM numerical model of the catchment, which solves the water and energy budget from the impermeable bedrock to the top of the canopy layer using the 3-D Richards equation for the water transfers in the ground, the kinematic wave equation for the surface runoff and a land surface model (CLM) for the energy budget and evapotranspiration calculation. This model forced by rain is in agreement with evapotranspiration and stream flow data and leads to simulated water storage changes that nicely fit to the observed gravity signal. This study points out the important role played by surface gravity changes in terms of a reliable proxy for water storage changes occurring in small catchments.

The temperature dependence of the force sensitivity of a regenerated fiber Bragg grating (RFBG) in a smf28 fiber was experimentally determined up to temperatures of 400°C for the first time. The force sensitivity was found to decline linearly with increasing temperature. The RFBG showed a pure elastic response to the applied forces and no wavelength drift occurred during the measurement. This demonstrates that RFBG based sensors are suited for force monitoring at temperatures up to 400°C.

In spite of the large stability of the fused quartz elastic system, which is utilized in modern relative gravimeters such as Scintrex CG-5, precise gravity measurements need regular calibration mostly because of weak changes in time of the elastic properties of the spring. Calibration of the relative gravimeters is important to avoid the systematic error of scale in relevant observations. In this study, due to the establishment of a large amplitude (of about 1200 mGal) calibration line in Iran, the stability of three CG-3 M and three CG-5 gravimeters has been continuously investigated based on the results of a 12 year (2005–2017) observations. The absolute gravity values at calibration stations were measured during the period 2005–2007 and more recently in 2017–2018 (for most of the stations) with absolute FG5 gravimeters. The results show that the Scintrex gravimeters exhibit different behaviors on the calibration line. The accuracy of determining the calibration coefficient of the gravimeters was better than 40 ppm. According to our results there is no effect of the gravity amplitude itself on the calibration factors. CG-5 #83 and CG-5 #87 have the largest changes in calibration factor (more than 1000 ppm) over the 12 year observation period while CG-3 M #20 and CG-3 M #60 have the smallest range (less than 200 ppm). The misclosure of relative gravity measurements in the first-order gravity network of Iran has been calculated before and after calibration corrections and it is shown that applying the scale factor correction reduced significantly the misclosures on the gravity network.

Cell lines have been widely used as models to characterize important intracellular and molecular mechanisms. Funding agencies and publishers – including the National Institutes of Health and Nature – have required researchers to authenticate human cell lines to establish their identity. Nevertheless, authentication of human cell lines has been poorly reported, let alone that of nonhuman species [1]. The use of different clones by diverse laboratories may lead to irreproducible results. Moreover, one should not assume that cell lines with the same name actually display identical characteristics, as differences in storage and culturing conditions may promote genomic variability and clonal divergence. In the reproductive field, the LβT2 [2] and αT3-1 [3] cell lines represent invaluable models for studying the regulation of pituitary gonadotropes by gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and other hormones. Both lines were produced by targeted oncogenesis in transgenic mice, with the LβT2 cells representing developmentally more mature gonadotropes than the αT3-1 cells. To establish a reference for each gonadotrope line, we requested early aliquots from the laboratory that generated them. Authentication by 27-dinucleotide and 9-tetranucleotide short tandem repeat (STR) genotyping was consistent with a mixed C57BL/6J x BALB/cJ genetic background. Spectral karyotyping revealed a variable number of chromosomes amongst cells, a result confirmed by shallow single-cell DNA sequencing in LβT2 cells. Interestingly, STR genotyping of several LβT2 batches obtained regularly throughout the past 20 years in our laboratory as well as in other laboratories identified a strain (#2) with a profile distinct from our reference line (#1). The two lines differed morphologically, with strain #2 exhibiting larger cells and extensions, whereas strain #1 displayed smaller uniform rounded cells. Moreover, the two lines showed variations in basal and GnRH-induced expression of early response and gonadotropin subunit genes. In line #1, under continuous GnRH stimulation, Egr1, Fos, and Lhb transcript levels were higher, whereas time course studies revealed lower Fos expression and no Fshb induction. Under a low-frequency regimen of pulsatile GnRH favoring Fshb induction, line #1 showed higher Egr1 transcript levels, but an absence of Fshb induction. Our results suggests that LβT2 strains exist that differ genetically and in their expression profiles. Our study demonstrates the importance of characterizing gonadotrope cell lines to improve data reproducibility, design and interpretation of gene expression experiments while continuing to use these cell lines that are important models for the study of gonadotrope physiology. Habitat restoration is an international priority. With this demand there is a need for ecological knowledge to underpin restoration projects to ensure their success and cost-effective delivery. This study is the first temperate marine restoration project to examine the role seasonality and location may have on restoration projects. The study found that the settlement of Serpula vermicularis, a rare biogenic reef forming species of conservation importance, was up to three times higher on materials deployed during July than other months. The results also found similar differences in settlement between restoration sites. These results suggest that the timing and location of a restoration effort could affect its overall success in the medium to long term. For the restoration of marine biogenic species of conservation importance, targeted spatial and temporal pre-restoration experiments can greatly increase a project's chance of success as well as making large-scale restoration programs more cost efficient.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequent and deadliest primary brain tumor, with a

International audience; We investigate the feasibility of the hybrid gravity technique applied to two geothermal reservoirs in northern Alsace, France, namely the Soultz-sous-Forêts and Rittershoffen sites. Soultz-sous-Forêts site is the first enhanced geothermal system demonstration site producing electricity in France. Here a geothermal fluid at 165 °C allows to produce around 1.5 MW thanks to one injection well and one production well 5 km deep. Rittershoffen site is dedicated to an industrial use and it is designed to produce 24 MWth heat power with 2 wells around 2.5 km deep. The most recent production episodes of Rittershoffen and Soultz-sous-Forêts geothermal plants have started respectively on May and June 2016. To study underground mass redistribution, time-lapse relative microgravity measurements have been done since 2014 on a network designed ad hoc for Soultz-sous-Forêts site and since 2015 for Rittershoffen site. After tide and drift correction, double differences are calculated to retrieve the gravity variation at each measuring point compared to a reference time and station. Absolute gravity measurements have been also collected at one of the reference stations. Before the beginning of the production in 2016, the stability of the Soultz-sous-Forêts reference station was monitored through the repetition of absolute measurements and continuous gravity records. In 2016, regular ties between the reference stations and the Strasbourg gravity observatory STJ9 have been done. Several superconducting gravimeters operate continuously in STJ9. Thus, we approach the concept of hybrid gravity. Vertical deformation is also controlled thanks to six continuous GPS measurements: the height changes are less than 1 cm. So we consider that our gravity variations are only due to subsurface mass changes. For the Soultz-sous-Forêts network, we notice significant changes in agreement with the position of the injection and the production wells. The maximum gravity change is 31 ± 8 μGal. On the contrary, we do not detect any similar signal for the Rittershoffen network. A simplistic model using two spherical sources located at 5 and 2 km for Soultz-sous-Forêts and Rittershoffen sites respectively shows negligeable surface gravity changes when taking into account the known injection and production flow rates.

International audience; Since July 2015 a Superconducting Gravimeter (SG) of the latest generation, the iOSG-24, has been recording continuously the time-varying gravity field at the low noise underground laboratory (LSBB URL) of Rustrel, France. This instrument designed for observatory purpose has a levitated Niobium sphere weighting 17.7 g instead of 4.3 g. The advantage of increasing the mass of the sphere is to reduce the thermal noise due to Brownian motion inside the sensor. A comparison of the noise levels shows that the combination of this iOSG-24 with the environmental condition at the LSBB makes this site one of the quietest worldwide SG sites. Parallel measurements with an absolute FG5 gravimeter give a calibration factor of −451 ± 3 nm/s2/V and a negligible linear drift is observed 3 months after the installation. Tidal analyses are consistent with theoretical predictions and have shown a strong S1 thermal wave. Influence of the hydrological water content, mostly related to the Fontaine de Vaucluse catchment, is clearly visible on the SG residuals after tides removal. However the hydrological influence modelled using the MERRA2 products does not fully explain the observed noise level at periods between 1 and 10 days. Longer gravimetric time-series are necessary to further study the seasonal hydrological effects.

Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling regulates hormone action in the reproductive axis, but specific mechanisms have yet to be completely elucidated. In the current study, ERK1 null and ERK2 floxed mice were combined with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR)-internal ribosomal entry site-Cre (GRIC) driver. Female ERK double-knockout (ERKdko) animals were hypogonadotropic, resulting in anovulation and complete infertility. Transcript levels of four gonadotrope-specific genes (GnRHR and the three gonadotropin subunits) were reduced in pituitaries at estrus in ERKdko females, and the postcastration response to endogenous GnRH hyperstimulation was blunted. As females aged, they exhibited abnormal ovarian histology, as well as increased body weight. ERKdko males were initially less affected, showing moderate subfertility, up to 6 months of age. Male ERKdko mice also displayed a blunted response to endogenous GnRH following castration. By 12 months of age, ERKdko males had reduced testicular weights and sperm production. By 18 months of age, the ERKdko males displayed reduced testis and seminal vesicle weights, marked seminiferous tubule degeneration, and a 77% reduction in sperm production relative to controls. As the GRIC is also active in the male germ line, we examined the specific role of ERK loss in the testes using the stimulated by retinoic acid 8 (Stra8)-Cre driver. Whereas ERK loss in GRIC and Stra8 males resulted in comparable losses in sperm production, seminiferous tubule histological degeneration was only observed in the GRIC-ERKdko animals. Our data suggest that loss of ERK signaling and hypogonadotropism within the reproductive axis impacts fertility and gonadal aging.

In this study, the response of regenerated fiber Bragg gratings (RFGBs) to axial forces was investigated in a temperature range from room temperature to 900 °C. For the first time, the transition from pure elastic to viscoelastic behavior around 700 °C of a standard SMF28 optical fiber was measured with an inscribed RFBG. An elastic model with linear temperature dependencies of Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio was established, and showed good agreement with the measurements up to temperatures of ∼500 °C. In the temperature range up to 900 °C, the RFBG response could be well described with a simple, single-material approach and a Burgers model that consists of a Kelvin and a Maxwell part. Based on the elastic parameter of the Maxwell part, the temperature-dependent force sensitivity of the RFBG was determined, and it showed a linear decrease in the range from room temperature to ∼500 °C, constant values in the range between ∼500 °C and ∼600 °C, and a strong increase at higher temperatures. While fulfilling the condition to operate in the elastic domain of the silica fiber, the investigations demonstrate that RFBGs can be used as force sensors up to temperatures of ∼600 °C - the range in which temperature-dependent force sensitivities have to be considered. The temperature-dependent parameters of the effective single-material model (elastic and viscoelastic part) are essential to describe the effective mechanical behavior of the optical fiber at high temperatures.

The growing use of nanomaterials requires the development of tools enabling study of the risks to consumer, worker, and environment. This study relates to the risk of suspension of inhalable particles upon production and/or use of powders constituted of nanoobjects, and more specifically to the potential of the vortex shaker as apparatus for determining the dustiness of a powder and as atmosphere generating tool for experimental toxicology. The powder chosen for this study was Graphistrength C100 (ARKEMA), a multiwalled carbon nanotube. Its agitation in a vortex shaker at 1500 rpm leads to an aerosol divided into four families, from isolated fibres to micronic pellets. The study highlights that the speed of agitation and the geometry of the device are influential parameters, to be systematically taken into account. It concludes that while the technique seems mature to conduct C100 dustiness tests, developments are still necessary to use it routinely for toxicology studies.

International audience; In the last few years, the performance of the cryogenic gravity instruments has been further improved by the development of a new generation of superconducting gravimeter (SG): the so-called iOSG which is a superconducting gravimeter designed for observatory purpose with a heavier sphere than previous SGs. The first iOSG (iOSG-024) has been installed in July 2015 at the LSSB low background noise underground research laboratory in Rustrel (France), funded by the EQUIPEX MIGA (Matter wave-laser based Interferometer Gravitation Antenna) project and by the European FEDER 2006-2013 " PFM LSBB – Développement des qualités environnementales du LSBB ". This instrument is operational since September 2015. We present the first tidal analyses of the 7-month time-varying gravity records of this newly installed instrument as well as the calibration results performed by parallel FG5 absolute gravity measurements. We also show the performances of iOSG-024 in terms of noise levels in the seismic (in the millihertz frequency range) band using a standardized procedure based on the computation of the residual power spectral densities over a quiet time period. The obtained noise levels are compared with other SG sites and with seismological reference noise models. The combination of the instrumental performance of the iOSG with the LSBB site properties makes this gravimetric station one of the quietest in the world, comparable to the lower sensor of the OSG-56 at BFO, at seismic frequencies.

The study aims to provide the first detailed account of the diversity and composition of the community associated with biogenic reefs formed by serpulid worms. Ten reefs (aggregations of calcareous Serpula vermicularis tubes), spanning a broad size-range, were collected from Loch Creran, Scotland, a Special Area of Conservation designated principally for the protection of its biogenic reefs. Total faunal abundance was strongly linearly related to reef weight, whilst taxon richness exhibited a hyperbolic relationship with reef size. 278 taxa were recorded from the ten reefs, with a reef of 0.1 m2 area supporting 163 taxa and 12756 individuals, which appears to represent considerable augmentation of diversity and abundance for sedimentary areas of the loch where the reefs occur. The reef assemblage was dominated by polychaetes (94 taxa), molluscs (70 taxa) and crustaceans (45 taxa). Species composition varied with reef size, although reefs greater than 25 cm width exhibited relatively little variation. In comparison with other biogenic polychaete habitats, S. vermicularis reefs appear to support a highly diverse community, which exhibits a high degree of similarity with that found in association with aggregations of the horse mussel, Modiolus modiolus. The presence of the Connemara clingfish, Lepadogaster candollei, rarely recorded at such a northerly latitude, on several reefs, indicates that the reef habitat may provide a stronghold for this species at the edge of its biogeographical range.
