Positive and negative affective states are respectively associated with optimistic and pessimistic expectations regarding future reward. One mechanism that might underlie these affect-related expectation biases is attention to positive- versus negative-valence features (e.g., attending to the positive reviews of a restaurant versus its expensive price). Here we tested the effects of experimentally induced positive and negative affect on feature-based attention in 120 participants completing a compound-generalization task with eye-tracking. We found that participants' reward expectations for novel compound stimuli were modulated in an affect-congruent way: positive affect induction increased reward expectations for compounds, whereas negative affect induction decreased reward expectations. Computational modelling and eye-tracking analyses each revealed that these effects were driven by affect-congruent changes in participants' allocation of attention to high- versus low-value features of compounds. These results provide mechanistic insight into a process by which affect produces biases in generalized reward expectations.

Introduction: Losses disguised as wins (LDWs) are a salient type of losing outcome common to electronic gambling machines (EGMs). These events occur when a gambling payout is less than the amount wagered (i.e., a net loss) but is nonetheless accompanied by the sounds and animations that accompany genuine wins. Previous lab-based studies have reported that participants tend to overestimate genuine wins when LDWs are present. This study reports an independent replication of these findings in a large online sample that included a substantial number of individuals reporting high-risk gambling and frequent EGM users. Methods: This online study recruited a sample of 940 participants who were randomly assigned to view one of two brief videos. Each video displayed a short period of simulated online slot machine gambling and included 2 genuine wins and either 3 or 0 LDWs. Participants were asked to estimate the number of times a win occurred that was more than the amount bet. Participants also completed the Problem Gambling Severity Index. Background: The ideal surgical approach for the management of varicocele in children and adolescents remains controversial. Several techniques are available including artery- or lymphatic-sparing with optical magnification ( via open inguinal or sub-inguinal approach), laparoscopic, antegrade and retrograde embolization/sclerotherapy. Objectives: We aimed to appraise the clinical outcomes of these techniques in children and adolescents. Data Sources and Methods: A systematic review was conducted (1997–2023). Meta-analysis or proportional meta-analysis for non-comparative studies (Freeman-Tukey transformation) using the random effects model was conducted. Results are expressed as overall proportion % and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: We identified 1910 studies; 632 duplicates were removed, 1278 were screened, 203 were reviewed and 56 were included, with 12 reporting on 2 different techniques (total of 68 data sets). Optical magnification via inguinal approach (498 cases): recurrence 2.5% (0.6–5.6), hydrocele 1.6% (0.47–3.4), testicular atrophy 1% (0.3–2.0), complications 1.1% (0.2–2.6); optical magnification via sub-inguinal approach (592 cases): recurrence 2.1% (0.7–4.4), hydrocele 1.26% (0.5–2.3), testicular atrophy 0.5% (0.1–1.3), complications 4% (1.0–8.8). Laparoscopic with mass-ligation/division (1943 cases): recurrence 2.9% (1.5–4.6), hydrocele 11.4% (8.3–14.9); complications 1.5% (0.6–2.9); laparoscopic with lymphatic-sparing (974 cases): recurrence 2.4% (1.5–3.5), hydrocele 1.2% (0.45–3.36), complications 1.2% (0.05–3.9); laparoscopic with artery-sparing (228 cases): recurrence 6.6% (2.3–12.9), hydrocele 6.5% (2.6–12.0). Antegrade embolization/sclerotherapy (403 cases): recurrence 7.6% (5.2–10.4), hydrocele 0.8% (0.17–1.9), technical failure 0.6% (0.1–1.6), complications 4.0% (2.3–6.1); retrograde embolization/sclerotherapy (509 cases): recurrence 6.9% (4.6–9.5), hydrocele 0.8% (0.05–2.5), technical failure 10.2% (4.6–17.6), and complications 4.8% (1.0–11.2). Conclusion: The recurrence rate varies between 2.1% and 7.6% and is higher with the embolization/sclerotherapy techniques. Post-operative hydrocele rate varies between 0.8% and 11.4% and is higher with the laparoscopic mass-ligation/division technique. Testicular atrophy has not been reported with the laparoscopic and embolization/sclerotherapy techniques. The retrograde embolization technique is associated with 10% technical failure (inability to complete the procedure). The laparoscopic lymphatic-sparing technique is characterized by the lowest recurrence rate, incidence of hydrocele and other complications, and no reports of testicular atrophy.

These lay singers and priests composed and performed music for the starkly divergent liturgical requirements of the mid-Tudor era and thereby participated directly in the projection of the images of their monarchs, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. The most skilled royal composers created iconic and often extravagant musical utterances standing as major confessional texts, even as these same artists generally left little explicit evidence of their religious alignments. Understanding this milieu provides crucial context for the lives and careers of Thomas Tallis, John Sheppard, and William Byrd. We have then the opportunity to observe a community of courtiers of the ‘middling sort’ as they combined radically crosscutting loyalties with outstanding artistry bridging the magnificence of the Henrician and Elizabethan musical worlds.

Abstract Resveratrol exhibits a wide range of biological properties, including anti-glycation, antioxidant, anti-inflammation, neuroprotective (including against advanced dementia and Alzheimer’s disease), anti-cancer, and anti-aging activity in experimental models (Galiniak et al., Acta Biochim Pol 66:13-21, 2019). Unfortunately, this compound exhibits low bioavailability and solubility (Galiniak et al., Acta Biochim Pol 66:13-21, 2019), requiring large doses that can cause nausea and GI distress. JOTROLTM is a micellar 10% resveratrol solubilization formulation that is thought to increase bioavailability of resveratrol via lymphatic system absorption. Jupiter Neurosciences (formerly Jupiter Orphan Therapeutics; “Jupiter”) is pursuing the use of resveratrol in mucopolysaccharidosis type 1 (MPS 1), Friedreich’s ataxia, and Alzheimer’s disease/mild cognitive impairment. This paper describes a first in human study (FIH) to evaluate the bioavailability of resveratrol after ascending, single oral doses up to 700 mg resveratrol as JOTROLTM. After a single 500 mg dose of JOTROLTM, a Cmax of 455 ng/mL was observed, vs. 85 ng/mL Cmax after a 1 g encapsulated dose (Turner et al., Neurology 85:1383-91, 2015) and 1942 ng/mL after a 2.5 g micronized dose (Howells et al., Cancer Prev Res (Phila) 4:1419-1425, 2011). In this study, resveratrol exposures (AUCs and Cmax) increased with increasing doses. This increase appears to be higher than dose-proportional for AUC0-t and Cmax. Abstract Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is a class I guideline indication after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Our population is high-risk for low medication adherence. With a multidisciplinary team we developed a telephone-based intervention to improve DAPT adherence post-PCI. Patients undergoing PCI at our center were contacted by nursing staff via telephone at 1 week, 30 days, and 60 days post-procedure. Calls included a reminder of the importance of DAPT and elicited any patient concerns. Concerns were relayed to the team who could take appropriate action. For patients filling their medications at any pharmacies within our closed system the proportion of days covered (PDC) was calculated. These were compared to data for patients undergoing PCI in the seven months prior to program initiation. Information on interventions performed as a result of calls was also collected. During the study period, 452 patients underwent PCI. Of these, 70% were contacted and 244 filled their prescription at our system pharmacies. Twelve-month median PDC was 74%, with 45% of patients having PDC > 80%. There was no significant difference when compared to the group prior to the intervention, median PDC 79% and 50% of patients having PDC > 80%. In 26 patients calls led to interventions, removing barriers that would have otherwise prevented continued adherence. A telephone-based reminder system led to directed interventions in nearly 1 in 10 patients contacted. It was not able to significantly improve PDC when compared to a contemporary sample. This highlights the difficulty in using PDC to detect barriers to adherence.

Abstract It is well known that stacking domains form in moiré superlattices due to the competition between the interlayer van der Waals forces and intralayer elastic forces, which can be recognized as polar domains due to the local spontaneous polarization in bilayers without centrosymmetry. We propose a theoretical model which captures the effect of an applied electric field on the domain structure. The coupling between the spontaneous polarization and field leads to uneven relaxation of the domains, and a net polarization in the superlattice at nonzero fields, which is sensitive to the moiré period. We show that the dielectric response to the field reduces the stacking energy and leads to softer domains in all bilayers. We then discuss the recent observations of ferroelectricity in the context of our model.

Recently, topologically nontrivial polarization textures have been predicted and observed in nanoscale systems. While these polarization textures are interesting and promising in terms of applications, their topology in general is yet to be fully understood. For example, the relation between topological polarization structures and band topology has not been explored, and polar domain structures are typically considered in topologically trivial systems. In particular, the local polarization in a crystal supercell is not well-defined, and typically calculated using approximations that do not satisfy gauge invariance. Furthermore, local polarization in supercells is typically approximated using calculations involving smaller unit cells, meaning the connection to the electronic structure of the supercell is lost. In this work, we propose a definition of local polarization which is gauge invariant and can be calculated directly from a supercell without approximations. We show using first-principles calculations for commensurate bilayer hexagonal boron nitride that our expressions for local polarization give the correct result at the unit cell level, which is a first approximation to the local polarization in a moiré superlattice. We also illustrate using an effective model that the local polarization can be directly calculated in real space. Finally, we discuss the relation between polarization and band topology, for which it is essential to have a correct definition of polarization textures.

Using fMRI and model-based analysis, they demonstrate that information value is multidimensional, accounting for the individual variability in the pursuit of informative outcomes.

Abstract Introduction The reporting of approaches facilitating the most efficient and timely recruitment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients into pharmacologic trials is fundamental to much‐needed therapeutic progress. Methods T2 Protect AD (T2), a phase 2 randomized placebo‐controlled trial of troriluzole in mild to moderate AD, used multiple recruitment strategies. Results T2 exceeded its recruitment target, enrolling 350 participants between July 2018 and December 2019 (randomization rate: 0.87 randomizations/site/month, or 3‐fold greater than recent trials of mild to moderate AD). The vast majority (98%) of participants were enrolled during a 10‐month window of intense promotion in news media, TV and radio advertisements, and social media. The distribution of primary recruitment sources included: existing patient lists at participating sites (72.3%), news media (12.3%), physician referral (6.0%), word of mouth (3.1%), and paid advertising (2.9%). Discussion The rapid recruitment of participants with mild to moderate AD was achieved through a range of approaches with varying success.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic brought about large increases in mental distress. The uptake of COVID-19 vaccines is expected to significantly reduce health risks, improve economic and social outcomes, with potential benefits to mental health.PurposeTo examine short-term changes in mental distress following the receipt of the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.MethodsParticipants included 8,003 adults from the address-based sampled, nationally representative Understanding America Study (UAS), surveyed at regular intervals between March 10, 2020, and March 31, 2021 who completed at least two waves of the survey. Respondents answered questions about COVID-19 vaccine status and self-reported mental distress as measured with the four-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-4). Fixed-effects regression models were used to identify the change in PHQ-4 scores and categorical indicators of mental distress resulting from the application of the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.ResultsPeople who were vaccinated between December 2020 and March 2021 reported decreased mental distress levels in the surveys conducted after receiving the first dose. The fixed-effects estimates show an average effect of receiving the vaccine equivalent to 4% of the standard deviation of PHQ-4 scores (p-valueConclusionsGetting the first dose of COVID-19 resulted in significant improvements in mental health, beyond improvements already achieved since mental distress peaked in the spring of 2020.

The electrostatics arising in ferroelectric/dielectric two-dimensional heterostructures and superlattices is revisited within a Kittel model in order to define and complete a clear paradigmatic reference for domain formation. The screening of the depolarizing field in isolated ferroelectric or polar thin films via the formation of 180° domains is well understood, where the width of the domains w grows as the square-root of the film thickness d, following Kittel’s Law for thick enough films (w ≪ d). For thinner films, a minimum is reached for w before diverging to a monodomain. Although this behaviour is known to be qualitatively unaltered when the dielectric environment of the film is modified, we consider the quantitative changes in that behaviour induced on the ferroelectric film by different dielectric settings: as deposited on a dielectric substrate, sandwiched between dielectrics, and in a superlattice of alternating ferroelectric/dielectric films. The model assumes infinitely thin domain walls, and therefore is not expected to be reliable for film thickness in the nanometre scale. The polarization field P(r) does vary in space, deviating from ±PS, following the depolarizing field in linear response, but the model does not include a polarization-gradient term as would appear in a Ginzburg–Landau free energy. The model is, however, worth characterizing, both as paradigmatic reference, and as applicable to not-so-thin films. The correct renormalization of parameters is obtained for the thick-film square-root behaviour in the mentioned settings, and the sub-Kittel regime is fully characterized. New results are presented alongside well-known ones for a comprehensive description. Among the former, a natural separation between strong and weak ferroelectric coupling in superlattices is found, which depends exclusively on the dielectric anisotropy of the ferroelectric layer.

As COVID-19 is rapidly unfolding in the United States, it is important to understand how individuals perceive the health and economic risks of the pandemic. In the absence of a readily available medical treatment, any strategy to contain the virus in the US will depend on the behavioral response of US residents. In this paper, we study individual's perceptions on COVID-19 and social distancing during the week of March 10-16, 2020, a week when COVID-19 was officially declared to be a pandemic by WHO and when new infections in the US were more than doubling every three days. Using a nationally representative sample of 5,414 respondents 18+ years of age from the Understanding America Study (UAS), we find that perceptions about COVID-19 health risks and economic consequences in the US population were largely pessimistic and highly variable by age and education. US residents who are young and do not have a college degree perceived a lower risk of getting infected but a higher probability of running out of money than others. Most individuals reported taking some steps to distance themselves from others but important differences emerge by gender and by source of information on COVID-19. Using state and day fixed-effect regressions, we show that perceptions of the health risks closely followed the number of COVID-19 cases in the country, and perceptions of the economic consequences and the prevalence of social distancing were driven upwards by both national and state-level cases. Unless addressed by effective health communication that reaches individuals across all social strata, variations in perceptions about COVID-19 epidemic raise concerns about the ability of the US to implement and sustain the widespread and restrictive policies that are required to curtail the pandemic.

Recent evidence suggests that schizophrenia is associated with impaired processing of global visual motion, but intact processing of global visual form. This project assessed whether preserved visual form detection in schizophrenia extended beyond low-level pattern discrimination to a naturalistic form-detection task. We assessed both naturalistic form detection and global motion detection in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorder, bipolar affective disorder, and healthy controls. Individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorder and bipolar affective disorder were impaired relative to healthy controls on the global motion task, but not the naturalistic form-detection task. Results indicate that preservation of visual form detection in these disorders extends beyond configural forms to naturalistic object processing.

In a dynamic world, an accurate model of the environment is vital for survival, and agents ought regularly to seek out new information with which to update their world models. This aspect of behaviour is not captured well by classical theories of decision making, and the cognitive mechanisms of information seeking are poorly understood. In particular, it is not known whether information is valued only for its instrumental use, or whether humans also assign it a non-instrumental intrinsic value. To address this question, the present study assessed preference for non-instrumental information among 80 healthy participants in two experiments. Participants performed a novel information preference task in which they could choose to pay a monetary cost to receive advance information about the outcome of a monetary lottery. Importantly, acquiring information did not alter lottery outcome probabilities. We found that participants were willing to incur considerable monetary costs to acquire payoff-irrelevant information about the lottery outcome. This behaviour was well explained by a computational cognitive model in which information preference resulted from aversion to temporally prolonged uncertainty. These results strongly suggest that humans assign an intrinsic value to information in a manner inconsistent with normative accounts of decision making under uncertainty. This intrinsic value may be associated with adaptive behaviour in real-world environments by producing a bias towards exploratory and information-seeking behaviour.

A distinctive new species of the crabronine wasp genus Quexua Pate is described and figured from a single male collected from lowland Amazonian rain forest in southeastern Peru. Quexua cicra sp. n. is the only species in the genus known with a sessile metasoma.

This study provides a list of orchid bees collected from the Los Amigos Biological Station, Madre de Dios, Peru. Specimens were captured by luring them to aromatic baits, eucalyptus oil and methyl salicylate, over a five day period in June, 2011. A total of 93 individuals in three genera and 15 species were collected at two approximate, yet ecologically distinctive, sites. Results are consistent with previous reports on the diversity of Amazonian orchid bees.

Exposure to pleasant and rewarding visual stimuli can bias people's choices towards either immediate or delayed gratification. We hypothesised that this phenomenon might be based on carry-over effects from a fast, unconscious assessment of the abstract 'time reference' of a stimuli, i.e. how the stimulus relates to one's personal understanding and connotation of time. Here we investigated whether participants' post-experiment ratings of task-irrelevant, positive background visual stimuli for the dimensions 'arousal' (used as a control condition) and 'time reference' were related to differences in single-channel event-related potentials (ERPs) and whether they could be predicted from spatio-temporal patterns of ERPs. Participants performed a demanding foreground choice-reaction task while on each trial one task-irrelevant image (depicting objects, people and scenes) was presented in the background. Conventional ERP analyses as well as multivariate support vector regression (SVR) analyses were conducted to predict participants' subsequent ratings. We found that only SVR allowed both 'arousal' and 'time reference' ratings to be predicted during the first 200 ms post-stimulus. This demonstrates an early, automatic semantic stimulus analysis, which might be related to the high relevance of 'time reference' to everyday decision-making and preference formation.
