Traditionally, water conditions of coffee areas are monitored by measuring the leaf water potential throughout a pressure pump. However, there is a demand for the development of technologies that can estimate large areas or regions. In this context, the objective of this study was to estimate the WW by surface reflectance values and vegetation indices obtained from the Landsat-8/OLI sensor in Minas Gerais-Brazil Several algorithms using OLI bands and vegetation indexes were evaluated and from the correlation analysis, a quadratic algorithm that uses the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) performed better, with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.82. Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation (LOOCV) was performed to validate the models and the best results were for NDVI quadratic algorithm, presenting a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 27.09% and an R2 of 0.85. Subsequently, the NDVI quadratic algorithm was applied to Landsat-8 images, aiming to spatialize the WW estimated in a representative area of regional coffee planting between September 2014 to July 2015. From the proposed algorithm, it was possible to estimate WW from Landsat-8/OLI imagery, contributing to drought monitoring in the coffee area leading to cost reduction to the producers. Due to increasing algae bloom occurrence and water degradation on a global scale, there is a demand for water quality monitoring systems based on remote sensing imagery. This paper describes the scientific, theoretical, and methodological background for creating a cloud-computing interface on Google Earth Engine (GEE) which allows end-users to access algae bloom related products with high spatial (30 m) and temporal (~5 day) resolution. The proposed methodology uses Sentinel-2 images corrected for atmospheric and sun-glint effects to generate an image collection of the Normalized Difference Chlorophyll-a Index (NDCI) for the entire time-series. NDCI is used to estimate both Chl-a concentration, based on a non-linear fitting model, and Trophic State Index (TSI), based on a tree-decision model classification into five classes. Once the Chl-a and TSI algorithms had been calibrated and validated they were implemented in GEE as an Earth Engine App, entitled Algae Bloom Monitoring Application (AlgaeMAp). AlgaeMAp is the first online platform built within the GEE platform that offers high spatial resolution of water quality parameters. The App benefits from the huge processing capability of GEE that allows any user with internet access to easily extract detailed spatial (30 m) and long temporal Chl-a and TSI information (from August 2015 and with images every 5 days) throughout the most important reservoirs in the State of São Paulo/Brazil. The application will be adapted to extend to other relevant areas in Latin America.

As part of a collaborative effort among researchers of several institutions and organizations, this project takes advantage of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing environment to map algae bloom over the main water bodies and reservoirs of Latin America using Sentinel-2 imagery (2015 to present). The methodology based on the Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index (NDCI) for chlorophyll-a and Trophic State Index (TSI) detection provided promising results. NDCI responds well to high levels of chlorophyll-a and, therefore, can be used as an indicator for algae blooms. The image processing as well as the display of maps and charts are being implemented into a GEE App to be freely available for general public use.

International audience; As the largest river basin on Earth, the Amazon is of major importance to the world's climate and water resources. Over the past decades, advances in satellite-based remote sensing (RS) have brought our understanding of its terrestrial water cycle and the associated hydrological processes to a new era. Here, we review major studies and the various techniques using satellite RS in the Amazon. We show how RS played a major role in supporting new research and key findings regarding the Amazon water cycle, and how the region became a laboratory for groundbreaking investigations of new satellite retrievals and analyses. At the basin-scale, the understanding of several hydrological processes was only possible with the advent of RS observations, such as the characterization of "rainfall hotspots" in the Andes-Amazon transition, evapotranspiration rates, and variations of surface waters and groundwater storage. These results strongly contribute to the recent advances of hydrological models and to our new understanding of the Amazon water budget and aquatic environments. In the context of upcoming hydrology-oriented satellite missions, which will offer the opportunity for new synergies and new observations with finer space-time resolution, this review aims to guide future research agenda toward integrated monitoring and understanding of the Amazon water from space. Integrated multidisciplinary studies, fostered by international collaborations, set up future directions to tackle the great challenges the Amazon is currently facing, from climate change to increased anthropogenic pressure.

The diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance (Kd) is an essential parameter for inland waters research by remotely sensing the water transparency. Lately, Kd semi-analytical algorithms substituted the empirical algorithms widely employed. The purpose of this research was to reparametrize a semi-analytical algorithm to estimate Kd and then apply it to a Sentinel-2 MSI time-series (2017&ndash, 2019) for the Tr&ecirc, s Marias reservoir, Brazil. The results for the Kd semi-analytical reparametrization achieved good accuracies, reaching mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) for bands B2, B3 and B4 (492, 560 and 665 nm), lower than 21% when derived from in-situ remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), while for MSI Data, a derived MAPE of 12% and 38% for B2 and B3, respectively. After the application of the algorithm to Sentinel-2 images time-series, seasonal patterns were observed in the results, showing high Kd values at 492 nm during the rainy periods, mainly in the tributary mouths, possibly due to an increase in the surface runoff and inflows and outflow rates in the reservoir watershed.

A floresta amazônica é considerada um dos maiores reservatórios de carbono da Terra. No entanto, mudanças antrópicas indiscriminadas no uso e cobertura da terra, como a conversão da floresta em áreas agrícolas e pastagens, provocam grandes impactos ambientais na floresta. A utilização de técnicas que auxiliam o mapeamento do uso e cobertura da terra se torna cada vez mais necessária. Índices como o NDVI (Índice de Vegetação por Diferença Normalizada) e MLME (Modelo Linear de Mistura Espectral) são amplamente utilizados para estudos da vegetação, por permitirem analisar e realçar parâmetros e feições em imagens de sensoriamento remoto. Desse modo, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho do mapeamento do uso e cobertura da terra (LULC), utilizando dados do satélite Sentinel-2B, adicionado com o índice de vegetação NDVI e com o MLME, utilizando o classificador Random Forest (RF). Para a realização deste estudo, foram utilizadas imagens do sensor MSI do Sentinel-2B e calculados os índices NDVI e MLME, derivados da imagem Sentinel-2B. A partir da segmentação da imagem, foi realizada a extração de atributos para cada segmento. A classificação foi realizada pelo método RF e a validação foi realizada através da simulação de Monte Carlo observando-se os valores de índice Kappa e Acurácia Global (AG). Para avaliar a diferença obtida com a adição das variáveis NDVI e MLME, quatro cenários de classificação foram realizados. Notou-se que os cenários apresentaram resultados semelhantes de índice Kappa e AG, não apresentando diferença significativa entre eles. A utilização das faixas espectrais do Sentinel-2B/MSI se mostrou uma boa alternativa para realizar o mapeamento do uso e cobertura da terra, facilitando as etapas de processamento. No entanto, a inclusão do MLME para a separação da classe Floresta Degradada (FD), se mostrou significativa. Além disso, observou-se que a utilização do classificador RF apresenta bons resultados para o mapeamento do uso e cobertura da terra.

In this study, the objective is to assess OWTs found in Brazilian waters using in situ remote sensing reflectance (R-rs), acquired for water bodies encompassing a wide range of optical characteristics. Eight OWTs are obtained based on R-rs spectral shape and magnitude, which represent different limnological characteristics of Brazilian waters. The OWT 1 is clear waters with low TSM, Chl-a, and CDOM (median ((x) over tilde): TSM of 2.64 g m(-3), Chl-a of 6.04 mg m(-3), and CDOM of 0.6 m(-1)); OWT 2 represents moderate turbid waters (TSM (x) over tilde: 5.14); OWTs 3, 4, and 5 are characterized by waters with high Chl-a concentration ((x) over tilde: 33.1, 39.6, and 180.4 mg m(-3), respectively); OWT 6 is characterized with the highest CDOM concentration ((x) over tilde: 4.07 m(-1)); OWTs 7 and 8 consist of waters with the highest TSM concentrations from terrestrial input ((x) over tilde: 19.55 and 93.25, respectively). International audience; The modeling of underwater light field is essential for the understanding of biogeochemical processes, such as photosynthesis, carbon fluxes, and sediment transports in inland waters. Water-column light attenuation can be quantified by the diffuse attenuation coefficient of the downwelling irradiance (Kd) using semi-analytical algorithms (SAA). However, the accuracy of these algorithms is currently limited in highly turbid environments, such as Amazon Floodplains, due to the SAA parametrization steps. In this study, we assessed an SAA approach for Kd retrieval using a sizeable (n = 239) and diverse dataset (e.g., Kd (490) ranging from almost 0 to up to 30 m-1 with mean values of 5.75 ± 3.94 m-1) in Amazon freshwater ecosystem. The main framework of this study consists of i) re-parametrization of a quasi-analytical algorithm using regional in-situ inherent optical properties (IOPs) and ii) application and validation of SAA for Kd retrieval using in-situ and Sentinel-2/MSI (n = 49) derived from Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs). Overall, the performance of the calibrated SAA was satisfactory for both in-situ and satellite Rrs. The validation results with in-situ data achieved a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) lower than 22%, Correlation Coefficient (R) > 0.80, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) lower than 1.7 m-1, and bias between 0.73 and 1.34 for simulated visible bands of Sentinel-2/MSI (490, 560 and 660 nm) (VIS). The results using MSI imagery were similar to those of in-situ, with R > 0.9, MAPE < 20%, RMSE < 1.25 m-1, and bias between 0.98 and 1.10 for VIS bands, which illustrate the viability of this methodology for Kd mapping in Amazon Floodplain Lakes. Therefore, this study demonstrates a successful application of satellite remote sensing data for the spatialization of the Kd in the optically complex waters of Amazon Basin, which is essential for the ecological management of the Amazon Floodplain Lakes.

Remote sensing imagery are fundamental to increasing the knowledge about sediment dynamics in the middle-lower Amazon floodplains. Moreover, they can help to understand both how climate change and how land use and land cover changes impact the sediment exchange between the Amazon River and floodplain lakes in this important and complex ecosystem. This study investigates the suitability of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 spectral characteristics in retrieving total (TSS) and inorganic (TSI) suspended sediments on a set of Amazon floodplain lakes in the middle-lower Amazon basin using in situ Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs) measurements to simulate Landsat 8/OLI (Operational Land Imager) and Sentinel 2/MSI (Multispectral Instrument) bands and to calibrate/validate several TSS and TSI empirical algorithms. The calibration was based on the Monte Carlo Simulation carried out for the following datasets: (1) All-Dataset, consisting of all the data acquired during four field campaigns at five lakes spread over the lower Amazon floodplain (n = 94); (2) Campaign-Dataset including samples acquired in a specific hydrograph phase (season) in all lakes. As sample size varied from one season to the other, n varied from 18 to 31; (3) Lake-Dataset including samples acquired in all seasons at a given lake with n also varying from 17 to 67 for each lake. The calibrated models were, then, applied to OLI and MSI scenes acquired in August 2017. The performance of three atmospheric correction algorithms was also assessed for both OLI (6S, ACOLITE, and L8SR) and MSI (6S, ACOLITE, and Sen2Cor) images. The impact of glint correction on atmosphere-corrected image performance was assessed against in situ glint-corrected Rrs measurements. After glint correction, the L8SR and 6S atmospheric correction performed better with the OLI and MSI sensors, respectively (Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) = 16.68% and 14.38%) considering the entire set of bands. However, for a given single band, different methods have different performances. The validated TSI and TSS satellite estimates showed that both in situ TSI and TSS algorithms provided reliable estimates, having the best results for the green OLI band (561 nm) and MSI red-edge band (705 nm) (MAPE < 21%). Moreover, the findings indicate that the OLI and MSI models provided similar errors, which support the use of both sensors as a virtual constellation for the TSS and TSI estimate over an Amazon floodplain. These results demonstrate the applicability of the calibration/validation techniques developed for the empirical modeling of suspended sediments in lower Amazon floodplain lakes using medium-resolution sensors.

Wetland inventory maps are essential information for the conservation and management of natural wetland areas. The classification framework is crucial for successful mapping of complex wetlands, including the model selection, input variables and training procedures. In this context, deep neural network (DNN) is a powerful technique for remote sensing image classification, but this model application for wetland mapping has not been discussed in the previous literature, especially using commercial WorldView-3 data. This study developed a new framework for wetland mapping using DNN algorithm and WorldView-3 image in the Millrace Flats Wildlife Management Area, Iowa, USA. The study area has several wetlands with a variety of shapes and sizes, and the minimum mapping unit was defined as 20 m2 (0.002 ha). A set of potential variables was derived from WorldView-3 and auxiliary LiDAR data, and a feature selection procedure using principal components analysis (PCA) was used to identify the most important variables for wetland classification. Furthermore, traditional machine learning methods (support vector machine, random forest and k-nearest neighbor) were also implemented for the comparison of results. In general, the results show that DNN achieved satisfactory results in the study area (overall accuracy = 93.33 %), and we observed a high spatial overlap between reference and classified wetland polygons (Jaccard index ∼0.8). Our results confirm that PCA-based feature selection was effective in the optimization of DNN performance, and vegetation and textural indices were the most informative variables. In addition, the comparison of results indicated that DNN classification achieved relatively similar accuracies to other methods. The total classification errors vary from 0.104 to 0.111 among the methods, and the overlapped areas between reference and classified polygons range between 87.93 and 93.33 %. Finally, the findings of this study have three main implications. First, the integration of DNN model and WorldView-3 image is useful for wetland mapping at 1.2-m, but DNN results did not outperform other methods in this study area. Second, the feature selection was important for model performance, and the combination of most relevant input parameters contributes to the success of all tested models. Third, the spatial resolution of WorldView-3 is appropriate to preserve the shape and extent of small wetlands, while the application of medium resolution image (30-m) has a negative impact on the accurate delineation of these areas. Since commercial satellite data are becoming more affordable for remote sensing users, this study provides a framework that can be utilized to integrate very high-resolution imagery and deep learning in the classification of complex wetland areas.

In Brazil, coffee production has great economic and social importance. Despite this fact, there is still a shortage of information regarding its spatial distribution, crop management and environment. The aim of this study was to carry out spectral monitoring of coffee lands and to characterize their environments using geotechnologies. Coffee fields with contiguous areas over 0.01 km2 within a 488.5 km2 region in the south of Minas Gerais state were selected for the study. Spectral data from the sensors OLI/Landsat 8 and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission from 2014 to 2015 were obtained, as well as information on production areas, surface temperature, vegetation indexes, altitude and slope, were gathered and analyzed. The results indicate that there is great variation in the NDVI and NDWI values, with means ranging from 0.21 to 0.91 (NDVI) and 0.108 to 0.543 (NDWI). The altitude ranged from 803 to 1150 m, and the surface temperature from 20.9°C to 27.6°C. The altitude and the surface temperature distribution patterns were correlated with the vegetation indexes. The slope classes were very homogeneous, predominantly with declivities between 8 to 20 %, characterized as wavy relief. This study made possible the characterization and monitoring of coffee lands and its results may be instrumental in decision-making processes related to coffee management.

Apesar da extensa cobertura florestal nativa, usos como pastagem extensiva e cultivo florestal também estão presentes na Área de Proteção Ambiental da Serra da Mantiqueira (APA-SM). Além disto, há também ausência de um plano de manejo, com pouco estudo ambiental sobre sua dinâmica de uso e ocupação. Este trabalho buscou avaliar a variação temporal da cobertura florestal para a APA-SM entre os anos de 1999 e 2017 utilizando interpretação de imagens orbitais dos sensores Landsat-5/TM e Landsat-8/OLI. A imagem de 1999 foi classificada com posterior atualização manual até o ano de 2017. Em seguida, buscando avaliar o nível de fragmentação das florestas nativas, foram adotadas métricas de paisagem nas imagens classificadas. Como resultado, foi diagnosticado um aumento da cobertura florestal (floresta nativa com floresta plantada) pela expansão e surgimento de novos fragmentos, enquanto que a conversão de florestas para outros usos foi baixa. Apesar disso, as florestas nativas apresentaram uma redução de seu percentual de cobertura em relação à cobertura florestal total e as métricas de paisagem evidenciaram fragmentação da floresta nativa. O significativo número de novos fragmentos de pequena extensão pode indicar, em determinados casos, prognóstico positivo para a classe de cobertura florestal nativa em crescimento, apesar da fragmentação do habitat.

Using remote sensing for monitoring trophic states of inland waters relies on the calibration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) bio-optical algorithms. One of the main limiting factors of calibrating those algorithms is that they cannot accurately cope with the wide chl-a concentration ranges in optically complex waters subject to different trophic states. Thus, this study proposes an optical hybrid chl-a algorithm (OHA), which is a combined framework of algorithms for specific chl-a concentration ranges. The study area is Ibitinga Reservoir characterized by high spatiotemporal variability of chl-a concentrations (3–1000 mg/m3). We took the following steps to address this issue: (1) we defined optical classes of specific chl-a concentration ranges using Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM); (2) we calibrated/validated chl-a bio-optical algorithms for each trophic class using simulated Sentinel-2 MSI (Multispectral Instrument) bands; (3) and we applied a decision tree classifier in MSI/Sentinel-2 image to detect the optical classes and to switch to the suitable algorithm for the given class. The results showed that three optical classes represent different ranges of chl-a concentration: class 1 varies 2.89–22.83 mg/m3, class 2 varies 19.51–87.63 mg/m3, and class 3 varies 75.89–938.97 mg/m3. The best algorithms for trophic classes 1, 2, and 3 are the 3-band (R2 = 0.78; MAPE - Mean Absolute Percentage Error = 34.36%), slope (R2 = 0.93; MAPE = 23.35%), and 2-band (R2 = 0.98; MAPE = 20.12%), respectively. The decision tree classifier showed an accuracy of 95% for detecting SAM’s optical trophic classes. The overall performance of OHA was satisfactory (R2 = 0.98; MAPE = 26.33%) using in situ data but reduced in the Sentinel-2 image (R2 = 0.42; MAPE = 28.32%) due to the temporal gap between matchups and the variability in reservoir hydrodynamics. In summary, OHA proved to be a viable method for estimating chl-a concentration in Ibitinga Reservoir and the extension of this framework allowed a more precise chl-a estimate in eutrophic inland waters.

The objective of this study was to identify meteorological variables related to the sensorial quality of the coffees from Mantiqueira region in Minas Gerais. Meteorological conditions are strongly related to the coffee’s sensorial characteristics, however, there aren’t many studies quantifying this relation. Air temperature and rainfall data were collected and spatialized for regional analysis. These were associated to the 2007 through 2011 coffees’ beverage scores. The region is stratified according to relief characteristics. The bigger frequency of high scores occurred on the region’s central-south, where coffee cultivation is performed above 900 m altitude. For the in loco study, meteorological data and coffee samples were collected in selected pilot areas. Coffee crops were selected in three altitude ranges: below 1000 m, between 1000 and 1200 m, and over 1200 m. Above 1000 m the meteorological variable that presented the biggest variation was the air temperature. Above 1000 m the smallest thermal amplitude occurred, which provided superior quality coffees. The study demonstrates the importance of the meteorological variable characterization aiming to identify locations with greater vocation to the specialty coffees production.
