Abstract

Globally, coastal cultivation regions (CCRs) are facing irrigation water shortages due to the impacts of climate change (ICV). CCRs have repeatedly suffered from saline irrigation water, increases in temperature, and reduced rainfall, resulting in irrigation water shortages. The aim of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the impacts of weather variables on the rice water requirement (RWR) in CCRs in Kien Giang Province. The response of rice grain yield to weather variables was estimated by simulating the AquaCrop model under different crop cultivation schedules (CCSs). These schedules involved advancing or delaying the sowing date by 30 days compared to the current common sowing date (baseline) for winter-spring (WS) and summer-fall (SF) vegetation seasons. The AquaCrop model demonstrated accurate simulation capabilities, as indicated by the high correlation values of statistical error indexes during the validation and calibration procedures. The findings revealed that rice grain yields would enhance up to 7.8% and 5.6% compared to the baseline when CCSs involve sowing 20 days earlier for WS vegetation season and are advanced by 20 days for SF vegetation season. Overall, modifying CCSs for coastal rice paddies in the study area, while considering weather variables, would have a positive contribution by mitigating the adverse effects of ICV.

9. Mediation, Emotion, and Agency from an Activity Theoretical Perspective as Potential Analytical Tools for Inquiry into Language Teacher Cognition: Clarifications and Implications

Abstract

Drawing inspiration from the sociocultural turn in language teacher cognition research, this conceptual article argues for the utilisation of cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) as a theoretical framework for researching and understanding teacher cognition as a social phenomenon. In this article, three CHAT-related concepts, namely "mediation," including "contradictions"; "emotion"; and "agency" are expounded, drawn together, and proven as pertinent and useful analytical tools for the study of the complexity of teacher cognition. Its central thesis posits that CHAT accommodates teachers' sociocultural activity systems whose mechanism is characterised by mediation that stimulates their emotional responses and agency for taking actions--a process through which teacher cognition unfolds in dynamic, developmental manners. By mapping these concepts, the article contributes to the extant scholarship by highlighting language teacher cognition as a mediated, emotional, and agentive process of transformation and providing critical epistemological implications for prospective empirical attempts in this line of research.

Abstract

Relevance. Annually, the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta receive approximately 50% of the total sediment load from the Mekong River, primarily during the southwest monsoon. During the northeast monsoon, this coastal sediment undergoes reworking and is transported southwestward along the coastal areas of the Mekong delta. Aim. Analyzing the grain-size distribution of sea-bed surface sediment helps improve our understanding of sediment redistribution along the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta. Methods. In order to illustrate changes in sea-bed surface sediment grain size between the two monsoons, we focused on the median grain size, a widely used parameter for sediment transport calculation, and created spatial maps of median grain size along the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta. The analysis was based on sediment samples collected along the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta during field excursions in the southwest and northeast seasons. Results. The results reveal that median grain size during northeast (mainly ranging from 0.005 to 0.01 mm) are larger than those during southwest (primarily ranging from 0.01 to 0.05 mm). These changes in median grain size and spatial distributions are most prominent along the east coast, specifically from Soc Trang to Bac Lieu. In contrast, median grain size along the west side does not exhibit significant differences between the southwest and northeast monsoons. These observations imply a more significant sediment transport along the east coastal areas of the Mekong Delta during the northeast monsoon and provide evidence for the transportation of sediment from the east coast to the west coast during the monsoons.

Abstract

In recent years, deep learning has rapidly become a method of choice for the segmentation of medical images. Deep Neural Network (DNN) architectures such as UNet have achieved state-of-the-art results on many medical datasets. To further improve the performance in the segmentation task, we develop an ensemble system which combines various deep learning architectures. We propose a two-layer ensemble of deep learning models for the segmentation of medical images. The prediction for each training image pixel made by each model in the first layer is used as the augmented data of the training image for the second layer of the ensemble. The prediction of the second layer is then combined by using a weights-based scheme in which each model contributes differently to the combined result. The weights are found by solving linear regression problems. Experiments conducted on two popular medical datasets namely CAMUS and Kvasir-SEG show that the proposed method achieves better results concerning two performance metrics (Dice Coefficient and Hausdorff distance) compared to some well-known benchmark algorithms., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the first cause of death in many countries. CRC originates from a small clump of cells on the lining of the colon called polyps, which over time might grow and become malignant. Early detection and removal of polyps are therefore necessary for the prevention of colon cancer. In this paper, we introduce an ensemble of medical polyp segmentation algorithms. Based on an observation that different segmentation algorithms will perform well on different subsets of examples because of the nature and size of training sets they have been exposed to and because of method-intrinsic factors, we propose to measure the confidence in the prediction of each algorithm and then use an associate threshold to determine whether the confidence is acceptable or not. An algorithm is selected for the ensemble if the confidence is below its associate threshold. The optimal threshold for each segmentation algorithm is found by using Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (CLPSO), a swarm intelligence algorithm. The Dice coefficient, a popular performance metric for image segmentation, is used as the fitness criteria. Experimental results on two polyp segmentation datasets MICCAI2015 and Kvasir-SEG confirm that our ensemble achieves better results compared to some well-known segmentation algorithms., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Amidst the existential crisis in contemporary society, young individuals worldwide find themselves susceptible to self-inflicted harm or even self-destruction in response to their psychological ruptures and injuries, while lacking the requisite self-awareness and the patience to persevere on the journey of self-understanding. In this article, we draw upon Rosenblatt’s (1995) notion of Literature as Exploration to propound a text-to-self pedagogical approach to reading Haruki Murakami and Can Xue and to teaching contemporary existentialist literature. Comprising three strategies, namely The Art World in My Eyes, The Mind Film, and The Literary Conversation, this approach encourages students to engage deeply with the portrayal of death in the writers’ flagship novels that view death as an unwavering companion to young individuals’ life journey and growth. Based on Rosenblatt (1995), the three strategies, and our survey-based analysis of 2,000 Vietnamese high school students’ existential perceptions, we propose a model for literature instruction through promoting students’ transition from literary interpretations to self-discovery and self-realization of death associated with the existential crisis. This four-stage model, we expect, will get students poised to reconcile with their lost, solitary, and vulnerable ego, actively befriend their ‘inner child’, and develop into individuals with healed hearts and positive worldviews.
