Abstract

Background: The wMel strain of Wolbachia has been successfully introduced into Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and subsequently shown to reduce transmission of dengue and other pathogens, under both laboratory and field conditions. Here we describe the entomological outcomes of wMel Wolbachia mosquito releases in two small communities in Nha Trang City in central Vietnam. Methods: The wMel strain of Wolbachia was backcrossed into local Aedes aegypti genotype and mosquito releases were undertaken by community members or by staff. Field monitoring was undertaken to track Wolbachia establishment in local Ae. aegypti mosquito populations. Ecological studies were undertaken to assess relationships between environmental factors and the spatial and temporal variability in Wolbachia infection prevalence in mosquitoes. Results: Releases of wMel Wolbachia Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in two small communities in Nha Trang City resulted in the initial establishment of Wolbachia in the local Ae. aegypti mosquito populations, followed by seasonal fluctuations in Wolbachia prevalence. There was significant small-scale spatial heterogeneity in Wolbachia infection prevalence in the Tri Nguyen Village site, resulting in the loss of wMel Wolbachia infection in mosquitoes in north and center areas, despite Wolbachia prevalence remaining high in mosquitoes in the south area. In the second site, Vinh Luong Ward, Wolbachia has persisted at a high level in mosquitoes throughout this site despite similar seasonal fluctuations in wMel Wolbachia prevalence. Conclusion: Seasonal variation in Wolbachia infection prevalence in mosquitoes was associated with elevated temperature conditions, and was possibly due to imperfect maternal transmission of Wolbachia. Heterogeneity in Wolbachia infection prevalence was found throughout one site, and indicates additional factors may influence Wolbachia establishment.

Abstract

The frequency of typical and atypical Beijing strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was determined in the Netherlands; Vietnam; and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, People’s Republic of China. The strains’ associations with drug resistance, M. bovis BCG vaccination, and patient characteristics were assessed. BCG vaccination may have positively selected the prevalent typical Beijing strains.

Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency affects 1 billion people globally. It has an important role in bone homeostasis, brain development and modulation of the immune system and yet the impact of antenatal vitamin D deficiency on infant outcomes is poorly understood. We assessed the association of 25- hydroxyvitamin D levels (25-OHD) in late pregnancy and early infant growth and developmental outcomes in rural Vietnam.A prospective cohort study of 960 women who had previously participated in a double-blind cluster randomized controlled trial of antenatal micronutrient supplementation in rural Vietnam was undertaken. Maternal 25-OHD concentration was measured at 32 weeks gestation, and infants were followed until 6 months of age. Main outcome measures were cognitive, motor, socio-emotional and language scores using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, 3rd edition, and infant length-for-age z scores at 6 months of age.60% (582/960) of women had 25-OHD levels

4. The effect of intermittent antenatal iron supplementation on maternal and infant outcomes in rural Viet Nam: a cluster randomised trial.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Anemia affects over 500 million women, and in pregnancy is associated with impaired maternal and infant outcomes. Intermittent antenatal iron supplementation is an attractive alternative to daily dosing; however, the impact of this strategy on infant outcomes remains unclear. We compared the effect of intermittent antenatal iron supplementation with daily iron supplementation on maternal and infant outcomes in rural Viet Nam. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This cluster randomised trial was conducted in Ha Nam province, Viet Nam. 1,258 pregnant women (< 16 wk gestation) in 104 communes were assigned to daily iron-folic acid (IFA), twice weekly IFA, or twice weekly multiple micronutrient (MMN) supplementation. Primary outcome was birth weight. Mean birth weight was 3,148 g (standard deviation 416). There was no difference in the birth weights of infants of women receiving twice weekly IFA compared to daily IFA (mean difference [MD] 28 g; 95% CI -22 to 78), or twice weekly MMN compared to daily IFA (MD -36.8 g; 95% CI -82 to 8.2). At 32 wk gestation, maternal ferritin was lower in women receiving twice weekly IFA compared to daily IFA (geometric mean ratio 0.73; 95% CI 0.67 to 0.80), and in women receiving twice weekly MMN compared to daily IFA (geometric mean ratio 0.62; 95% CI 0.57 to 0.68), but there was no difference in hemoglobin levels. Infants of mothers who received twice weekly IFA had higher cognitive scores at 6 mo of age compared to those who received daily IFA (MD 1.89; 95% CI 0.23 to 3.56). CONCLUSIONS: Twice weekly antenatal IFA or MMN did not produce a clinically important difference in birth weight, when compared to daily IFA supplementation. The significant improvement in infant cognitive outcomes at 6 mo of age following twice weekly antenatal IFA requires further exploration, and provides additional support for the use of intermittent, rather than daily, antenatal IFA in populations with low rates of iron deficiency. Abstract

In this paper we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the beam transversely. The undulator tapering profile is optimized to maximize the energy conversion efficiency from a 343 MeV 1 kA beam into coherent 257.5 nm radiation taking into account the longitudinal current profile generated by the linac.

Abstract

Training deep learning networks involves continuous weight updates across the various layers of the deep network while using a backpropagation algorithm (BP). This results in expensive computation overheads during training. Consequently, most deep learning accelerators today employ pre-trained weights and focus only on improving the design of the inference phase. The recent trend is to build a complete deep learning accelerator by incorporating the training module. Such efforts require an ultra-fast chip architecture for executing the BP algorithm. In this article, we propose a novel photonics-based backpropagation accelerator for high performance deep learning training. We present the design for a convolutional neural network, BPLight-CNN, which incorporates the silicon photonics-based backpropagation accelerator. BPLight-CNN is a first-of-its-kind photonic and memristor-based CNN architecture for end-to-end training and prediction. We evaluate BPLight-CNN using a photonic CAD framework (IPKISS) on deep learning benchmark models including LeNet and VGG-Net. The proposed design achieves (i) at least 34x speedup, 34x improvement in computational efficiency, and 38.5x energy savings, during training; and (ii) 29x speedup, 31x improvement in computational efficiency, and 38.7x improvement in energy savings, during inference compared to the state-of-the-art designs. All these comparisons are done at a 16-bit resolution; and BPLight-CNN achieves these improvements at a cost of approximately 6% lower accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art.

Abstract

This seventh global report provides new insights into the evolution of certified agriculture and forestry. The International Trade Centre has teamed up once again with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture and the International Institute for Sustainable Development to provide data about 14 major sustainability standards for bananas, cocoa, coffee, cotton, oil palm, soybeans, sugarcane, tea and forestry products. This year’s report adds data from 2021 and finds that slow growth resumed after a dip in 2020. The publication helps shape decisions of policymakers, producers and businesses, working to address systemic labour and environmental challenges through certified sustainable production.

Background/Objectives: Animal studies have demonstrated that soy isoflavones exert antidiabetic effects. However, evidence regarding the association between soyfood intake, a unique source of isoflavones, and type 2 diabetes remains inconclusive. This study assessed the relationship between habitual intakes of soyfoods and major isoflavones and risk of type 2 diabetes in Vietnamese adults. Subjects/Methods: A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Vietnam during 2013-2015. A total of 599 newly diagnosed diabetic cases (age 40-65 years) and 599 hospital-based controls, frequency matched by age and sex, were recruited in Hanoi, capital city of Vietnam. Information on frequency and quantity of soyfood and isoflavone intake, together with demographics, habitual diet and lifestyle characteristics, was obtained from direct interviews using a validated and reliable questionnaire. Unconditional logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between soy variables and type 2 diabetes risk. 40. Low-dose intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator in acute ischemic stroke without large vessel occlusion screened by 3T MRI.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Globally, there are more than six million deaths due to cerebrovascular disease, which is the second leading cause of death. Although the imaging findings of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are more accurate than computed tomography for acute ischemic stroke (AIS), it is uncommon in recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rTPA) treatment. Alteplase is not only strongly recommended treatment for acute ischemic stroke within 4.5 hours, but also decreases the disability and mortality rate. Besides, low-dose rTPA was associated with significant reductions in symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH), compared with standard one. However, the benefits of low-dose rTPA for the treatment of AIS without large vessel occlusion (LVO) have not been fully demonstrated. We evaluated whether the low-dose rTPA in AIS without LVO could improve prognosis in patients three months post-treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study on patients with AIS treated within 4.5 hours of symptom onset admitted to Can Tho S.I.S General Hospital between February 2019 and July 2021. The eligibility criteria were patients aged > 18 years treated with lowdose rTPA (0.6 mg/kg) and screened by 3T MRI. Patients with a pre-hospital modified Rankin score (mRS) ≥ 2 points, intracranial hemorrhage, LVO, or ≥ 3 microbleeds on brain MRI were excluded. The primary outcomes were the favorable outcome rate at three months and safety, which were evaluated by the rates of intracranial hemorrhage and mortality at three months. RESULTS: This study enrolled 92 eligible patients between February 2019 and July 2021. Their National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores were 7.5 ± 3.7 at admission, 3.3 ± 3.5 at discharge or seven days after discharge, and 2.2 ± 2.8 at three months. Their mRS were 2.9 ± 0.8 at admission, 1.4 ± 1.3 at discharge or seven days after discharge, and 1.1 ± 1.1 at three months. Elevated cardiac enzymes, age ≥ 75 years, and body mass index ≥ 25 were associated with increased poor outcomes at three months. While AIS was more common in men than women, a similar number of men (33.3%) and women had poor mRS. Three patients had complications associated with low-dose rTPA treatment: one (1.1%) had intracranial hemorrhage, one (1.1%) had new infarcts, and one (1.1%) had gastrointestinal bleeding. No deaths occurred within three months. CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates the efficacy and safety of low-dose rTPA treatment for AIS without LVO within 4.5 hours. Từ kết quả phân tích TCCM, Lý thuyết Quản trị dựa trên nguồn lực và bối cảnh đặc thù của ngành dệt may Việt Nam, nhóm tác giả tiến hành đề xuất mô hình nghiên cứu về các nhân tố tác động tới chi phí logistics của Doanh Nghiệp Xuất Khẩu (DNXK) hàng dệt may tại Việt Nam. Kết quả phân tích TCCM và quy trình nghiên cứu không chỉ là nền tảng để đề xuất mô hình nghiên cứu cho các nhân tố tác động tới chi phí logistics của các DNXK hàng dệt may tại Việt Nam mà còn là gợi ý quan trọng cho việc áp dụng phương pháp này trong các nghiên cứu khác ở lĩnh vực kinh tế và quản trị trong tương lai.

We exposed individuals to severe aquatic hypercarbia (up to PwCO2 = 81 mmHg) using step-wise and progressive exposure protocols while measuring gill ventilation rate, heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure, and air-breathing frequency, as well as arterial blood pH and PCO2. We confirm that P. hypophthalmus is tolerant of hypercarbia. Under both protocols gill ventilation rate, heart rate, and mean arterial blood pressure were maintained near control levels even at very high CO2 levels. We observed a marked amount of individual variation in the PwCO2 at which air-breathing was elicited, with some individuals not responding at all. The experimental protocol also influenced the onset of air-breathing. Air-breathing began at lower PwCO2 in the step-wise protocol (23 ± 4.1 mmHg) compared with the progressive protocol (46 ± 7.8 mmHg). Air-breathing was often followed by aquatic surface respiration, at higher PCO2 (71 ± 5.2 mmHg) levels. On average, the blood PCO2 was approximately 43% lower (46 ± 2.5 mmHg) than water PwCO2 (~81 mmHg) at our highest tested CO2 level. While this suggests that aerial CO2 elimination is an effective, and perhaps critical, respiratory strategy used by P. hypophthalmus to cope with severe hypercarbia, this observation may also be explained by a long lag time required for equilibration.

Abstract

Previous experimental and analytical investigations have highlighted the efficacy of employing prestressed fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets to enhance the flexural performance of reinforced concrete beams under specific design conditions. This research aims to broaden the understanding by conducting experiments and numerical simulations to provide more comprehensive insights into the performance of FRP sheet-strengthened beams, encompassing a wide array of design parameters. Initially, four reinforced concrete beam specimens undergo experimental testing, comprising three scenarios strengthened with CFRP sheets exhibiting varying levels of prestress. Subsequently, 42 experimentally validated numerical simulation models are employed for the parametric analysis of the strengthened beams. Considered design parameters include the material properties, dimensions, and prestress levels of FRP sheets, as well as the concrete strength and geometric characteristics of the beams. Experimental and simulation results show that strengthening with prestressed FRP sheets significantly enhances the flexural performance of reinforced concrete beams, including delaying the onset of flexural cracking and steel reinforcement yielding. The greater the prestress levels, dimensions, and elastic modulus of the FRP sheets, the more pronounced this effectiveness becomes, and they are still maintained with increases in the dimensions and strength of the concrete of the reference beam. Conversely, the ultimate load of the beam is notably influenced by the bond between the FRP layer and the concrete. Increasing the stiffness or prestress levels of FRP sheets may accelerate delamination due to increased horizontal shear stress on the concrete-FRP interface, making the ultimate load of the beam less significant. Therefore, to increase the ultimate load of the beam by using prestressed FRP sheets, the prerequisite is to enhance the bond between the FRP sheets and the beam using high-strength adhesives or other mechanical bonding approaches.

Abstract

Nghiên cứu được thực hiện nhằm đánh giá khả năng sinh trưởng và năng suất của ba dòng đậu nành hồi giao BC3F4 trong điều kiện tưới nước nhiễm mặn nhân tạo ở nồng độ 120 mM NaCl. Thí nghiệm được bố trí theo kiểu thừa số hai nhân tố hoàn toàn ngẫu nhiên với ba lần lặp lại, gồm nhân tố (A) ba dòng đậu nành hồi giao 1500, 1600-1 và 1600-2 và ba giống/dòng đậu nành bố mẹ MTĐ 176, MTĐ 878-2 (đối chứng mẫn cảm) và NIL72-T (đối chứng chống chịu); và (B) hai nồng độ mặn 0 (đối chứng) và 120 mM NaCl. Mặn làm giảm khả năng sinh trưởng và năng suất hạt của ba dòng đậu nành hồi giao, nhưng làm gia tăng hàm lượng proline và mức độ rò rỉ ion. Chỉ số chống chịu mặn của các dòng đậu nành theo thứ tự giảm dần là 1600-1 (68,2%) > 1600-2 (36,3%) > 1500 (27,9%). Qua đó cho thấy, dòng 1600-1 là dòng chịu mặn có triển vọng cần được thử nghiệm thêm với độ mặn cao hơn.
