20. Synergistic Resonances and Charge Transfer in Double-Shelled ZnO Hollow Microspheres for High-Performance Semiconductor-Based SERS Substrates.

Abstract

The main contribution of semiconductor nanomaterials to surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) comes from charge transfer (CT) between the absorbing molecules and the semiconductor. However, it is still challenging to realize the combined effects of the electromagnetic mechanism (EM) and the chemical mechanism (CM) for semiconductor-based SERS substrates. Herein, we demonstrate and design double-shelled ZnO (ZnO-DS) hollow microspheres by a modified hydrothermal/solvothermal process. SERS experiments and theoretical simulations proved that the excellent SERS activity is mainly attributed to the combined effect of Mie resonances generated by the nanocavities in the unique hollow double-shell nanoparticles and the CT effect excited by special structure ZnO. Particularly, the produced ZnO-DS SERS substrates exhibited a low limit of detection (LOD, 1 × 10–7 M for 4-MPY), outstanding sensitivity (EF = 1.2 × 104), and high stability (RSD = 10.4%, over 30 days of storage at room temperature). Furthermore, benefiting from the matching of energy levels of the ZnO-DS substrate and probe molecules, the sulfhydryl molecules with similar structures could be selectively distinguished in complex environments. We visualize that this work will resolve the current dilemma between sensitivity and selective detection of SERS substrates and expect to enable the monitoring of target molecules in the environment containing complex mixtures such as food safety and environmental protection. Abstract

Nanodiamonds (NDs), the allotropic carbon nanomaterials with nanosize, durable inert core, adjustable surface morphology, high thermal constancy, and super mechanical performances, possess the characteristics of promising reinforcement materials for various technological applications. However, ND particles hold a vigorous propensity to aggregate in liquid media, obstructing their implementation in mechanical and thermal sciences. This aggregation is caused by high surface to volume ratio. By reducing the surface energy and lowering cluster formation, the mechanical and thermal properties of NDs can be polished. Herein, we report on the covalent functionalization of NDs with amine moiety through ball milling method. Their dispersion was checked in ethanol and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA polymer) against nonfunctionalized NDs. The dispersive behavior showed that ball mill functionalized NDs produced preferably stable aqueous dispersions in ethanol media. Furthermore, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 wt% ND/PMMA composites were synthesized, and their mechanical and thermal behaviors were studied in terms of hardness, compression, Young`s modulus, flexural strength, tensile strength, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results revealed that the composites containing 0.2 wt% functionalized ND loaded with PMMA matrix showed outstanding mechanical and thermal performances indicating that 0.2 wt% is the optimum amount for achieving excellent outcomes.

Abstract

Three types (type-A, B, and C) of composite polymeric membranes (CPMs) based on poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and different fillers (sodium polyacrylate and sodium polyacrylate-graphite) soaked in water and 0.5 N HCl were prepared using solvent casting method. Different physicochemical parameters such as microscopic surface study, water uptake, perpendicular swelling, density, porosity (ε), ion exchange capacity, and conductivity of the as the prepared CPMs were evaluated. Interestingly, type-A CPM cast with filler-A has greater values of the above parameters except density and ionic conductivity than those of type-B and C CPMs. The water uptake of type-A, B and C composite membranes was respectively in the range of 220.42–534.70, 59.64–41.65, and 15.94–2.62%. Ion exchange capacity of type-A, B and C CPMs was in the range of 3.669 × 107–2.156 × 107, 5.948 × 107–1.258 × 107, and 1.454 × 107–1.201 × 107 m.eq.g−1 respectively while the conductivity order was type-A

Abstract

Development of superior heterogeneous photocatalyst for hydrogen (H2) evolution with promising pollutant degradable capacity is a significant feature but then again thought-provoking for shaping the energy and environmental issues. In this regard, a photocatalytic H2 evolution using nano diamond (ND) semiconducting materials having pollutant degradable capacity for Rhodamine B dye (RhB) has been rarely reported and hence predicted to the sustainable energy. Productive characteristics such good chemical stability, super hardness, nanometer size, biocompatibility and thermal conductivity, ND is a capable and highly valuable powder physical material. Non-uniform and agglomeration dispersion spread of ND in different solvents are the main problems preventing ND from the wide-use in commercial applications. Upon 535 nm solar light excitation, the fabricated ND sample exhibit remarkable photocatalytic H2 production with a HER of about 400 μmol h−1 than pristine ND (197 μmol h−1). Additionally, this H2 generation dramatically enhances the quantum yield, indicating the H2 terminated sites work as electron reservoirs. Precisely, the kinetic constant pseudo-order of FND for photodegradation of RhB was higher as compared with pristine ND. As such, the results show an important step toward tailor-designed and explain the vital role of FND composites for the rational motifs of fruitful photocatalyst with effective pollutant degradable capability for future demand.
