ABSTRACT Background Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is a type of cancer of the respiratory tract that often presents with subtle symptoms at the early stage and is susceptible to recurrence and metastasis. Materials and Methods To find out key regulatory genes involved in LSCC development, we downloaded LSCC‐related sequencing datasets for bioinformatics analysis. WGCNA was performed on GSE142083 and differential analysis was conducted on GSE51985 and TCGA‐HNSC. Intersection genes were taken from the above three datasets. To confirm the function of genes, we overexpressed and knocked down genes in cells and treated them with autophagy agonist Rapamycin and PI3K‐AKT pathway inhibitor. At the cellular level, the expression of CH25H, autophagy‐related proteins (LC3 I, LC3 II, p62, and Beclin 1), and PI3K‐AKT pathway‐related proteins (PI3K, AKT, and p‐AKT) were assessed via Western blot; the mRNA level of CH25H was evaluated through qRT‐PCR; the cell activity was examined by CCK8; the apoptosis was assessed through flow cytometry; and the cell migration and invasion were assessed through wound healing and Transwell assays. Results Through bioinformatics analysis, we screened 7 genes (CH25H, NELL2, STC2, TMEM158, ZIC2, HOXD11, and HOXD10). Ultimately, CH25H was selected for follow‐up experiments. By detecting CH25H expression in human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) and LSCC cells (Tu‐686, SNU899, and AMC‐HN‐8), it was found out that CH25H expression was higher in HaCaT cells than in LSCC cells. To elucidate the role of CH25H in LSCC development, we overexpressed CH25H in Tu‐686 cells and downregulated its expression in AMC‐HN‐8 cells. CH25H was revealed to reduce the proliferation, activity, invasion, and migration of LSCC cells while increasing their apoptosis levels. Significant changes were also observed in the expressions of autophagy‐ and PI3K‐AKT pathway‐related proteins. To further investigate the roles of autophagy and the PI3K‐AKT pathway in LSCC development, we respectively employed autophagy agonists and inhibitors targeting the PI3K‐AKT pathway to intervene the cells, and found that CH25H regulated the PI3K‐AKT pathway to promote autophagy, thus enhancing the apoptosis of LSCC cells. We further investigated CH25H's impact on tumor growth, autophagy, and the PI3K‐AKT pathway at the animal level and found that CH25H promoted autophagy of LSCC cells and inhibited the PI3K‐AKT pathway, and ultimately inhibiting the progression of LSCC. Conclusions In summary, CH25H promotes autophagy and affects the malignant progression of LSCC through the PI3K‐AKT pathway.

Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital malformations of the respiratory system. These cysts can be categorized as intrapulmonary, mediastinal, or ectopic. Ectopic bronchogenic cysts, which lack distinctive clinical and imaging features, are particularly challenging to diagnose. This study presents a 48-year-old woman having a small intestinal bronchogenic cyst. She was repeatedly misdiagnosed as having an ovarian chocolate cyst or a cystic mass of bladder origin three years ago. However, no cyst was found during the operation. Half a year prior to presenting at our hospital, the patient developed frequent urination, prompting her to seek further treatment. We eventually discovered a cyst in the small intestine. The histological evaluation of the specimen showed a bronchogenic cyst. Small intestine bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare and easily misdiagnosed. It should be considered as one of the differential diagnoses of pelvic cysts. Particularly, when intraoperative exploration of the pelvic cavity fails to detect any cysts, consideration should be given to the possibility of small intestine bronchogenic cysts.

Objective Evidence from cell and mouse models and human tissues suggests that cyclin dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) is involved in lung cancer (LC) tumorigenesis. However, the different types of expression patterns and prognostic results of CDK1 need further analysis. Methods In the current study, we assessed CDK1 expression and LC patient outcomes using data from the Oncomine, GEPIA, and Kaplan–Meier Plotter databases. Additionally, mutations in the CDK1 gene were analyzed by using the cBioPortal database. The expression of CDK1 was verified by real-time quantitative PCR using the Human Protein Atlas database and human tissues. Results Expression of CDK1 was higher in lung adenocarcinoma and squamous cell lung carcinoma tissues than in normal lung samples. Moreover, CDK1 expression was linked to disease progression. Survival analysis indicated that upregulation of CDK1 was related to poor overall survival, low first progression, and post-progression survival in patients with LC. Conclusions Our results indicate that CDK1 is a potential clinical target and prognostic biomarker for patients with LC.

Researchers interested in affect have often questioned the existence of neutral affective states. In this paper, we review and challenge three beliefs that researchers might hold about neutral affect. These beliefs are: (1) it is not possible to feel neutral because people are always feeling something, (2) neutrality is not an affective state because affect must be positively or negatively valenced, and (3) neutral affect is unimportant because it does not influence cognition or behavior. We review the reasons these beliefs might exist and provide empirical evidence that questions them. Specifically, we argue that neutral affect is a felt experience that provides important valence-relevant information, which influences cognition and behavior. By dispelling these beliefs about neutral affect, we hope to shine a light on the assumptions that researchers hold about the nature of affect and to provide novel theoretical and methodological perspectives that help advance our understanding of the affective landscape.

Abstract Background Nanoplastics (NPs) are omnipresent in our lives as a new type of pollution with a tiny size. It can enter organisms from the environment, accumulate in the body, and be passed down the food chain. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a nonspecific intestinal inflammatory disease that is recurrent and prevalent in the population. Given that the intestinal features of colitis may affect the behavior and toxicity of NPs, it is imperative to clarify the risk and toxicity mechanisms of NPs in colitis models. Methods and results In this study, mice were subjected to three cycles of 5-day dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) exposures, with a break of 7 to 11 days between each cycle. After the first cycle of DSS exposure, the mice were fed gavagely with water containing 100 nm polystyrene nanobeads (PS-NPs, at concentrations of 1 mg/kg·BW, 5 mg/kg·BW and 25 mg/kg·BW, respectively) for 28 consecutive days. The results demonstrated that cyclic administration of DSS induced chronic inflammation in mice, while the standard drug “5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA)” treatment partially improved colitis manifestations. PS-NPs exacerbated intestinal inflammation in mice with chronic colitis by activating the MAPK signaling pathway. Furthermore, PS-NPs aggravated inflammation, oxidative stress, as well as hepatic lipid metabolism disturbance in the liver of mice with chronic colitis. Conclusion PS-NPs exacerbate intestinal inflammation and injury in mice with chronic colitis. This finding highlights chronically ill populations’ susceptibility to environmental hazards, which urgent more research and risk assessment studies.

The interplay among gut microbiota, intestines, and liver is crucial in preventing acute alcoholic liver injury. In this study, the hepatoprotective potential of polysaccharides from Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. leaves (EULP) on acute alcoholic liver injury in Kunming male mice was investigated. The structural features suggested that the EULP appeared as a heterogeneous mixture of polysaccharides with a molecular weight of 186132 Da. A 14-day pretreatment of EULP ameliorated acute alcoholic-induced hepatic inflam mation (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10), oxidative stress (GSH, SOD, and T-AOC), and liver damage (ALT and AST) via enhancing intestinal barrier (Occludin, Claudin 1, and ZO-1) and modulating microbiome, which subsequently inhibiting endotoxemia and balancing the homeostasis of the gut–liver axis. EULP restored the composition of intestinal flora with an increase in the relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae and a decrease in Lachnospiraceae and Verrucomicrobiaceae. Notably, prolonged EULP pretreatment (14 days) but no single gavage of EULP achieved excellent hepatoprotection. These findings endorsed the potential of EULP as a functional food for mitigating acute alcoholic-induce d liver damage, attributed to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and prebiotic properties facilitated by the microbiota–gut–liver axis.

The performance of sole optical imaging device for marine target recognition is degraded by sea fog, sea-glint, and many other disturbing factors. To enhance the ability of target recognition in marine environment, we propose a polarization-intensity joint imaging method and the corresponding processing method. We combine fine imaging of polarization in a small field of view with wide-field imaging of visible light intensity, using visible light intensity information for large-scale target surveys. After locking onto areas of interest, we utilize high-resolution polarization cameras with small fields of view for detailed inspection. We enhance and fuse the information from areas of interest using the proposed matching information processing method. Meanwhile, to deal with problems existing in the marine environment polarization-intensity joint imaging, such as details loss in DoP (degree of polarization) image, low target resolution in the large field of view intensity image, and insufficient information in a single image, etc., we extract the details of raw image from DoFP (division-of-focal-plane) polarization camera as residual compensation for DoP image super-resolution and cooperate with the RealSR algorithm to super-resolve the local target details of the intensity image in a large field of view. On the premise that PIQE (Perception-based Image Quality Evaluator) reaches the excellent score range, the images with the same resolution are fused. The automatic recognition comparison before and after processing proves that the accuracy of target recognition can be effectively improved after processing.

Obtaining adequate resection margins in small intestinal necrotic tissue remains challenging due to the lack of intraoperative feedback. Here, we used hyperspectral imaging (HSI), an imaging technique for objective identification, combined with deep learning methods for automated small intestine tissue classification. As part of a prospective experimental study, we recorded hyperspectral datasets of small intestine biopsies from seven white rabbits. Based on the differences in the spectral characteristics of normal and ischemic necrotic small intestinal tissues in the wavelength range of 400–1000 nm, we applied deep learning techniques to objectively distinguish between these two types of tissues. The results showed that three-dimensional convolutional neural networks were more effective in extracting both spectral and spatial features of small intestine tissue hyperspectral data for classification. The combination of a deep learning model and HSI provided a new idea for the objective identification of ischemic necrotic tissue in the small intestine.

In multi-source camera collaborative imaging research, it is known that the differences in size and resolution of the sensor chip, the angle of view and field of view when imaging, and the imaging characteristics of optical systems between cameras, makes image registration a topic that can never be avoided in data analysis and post-processing. Additionally, lacking common features between multi-source images means that the accurate registration of multi-modal images can only be completed manually. Aiming at the registration problem of the polarization parameter image and infrared image, this study takes advantage of the invariant feature of the imaging target topology and introduces the image texture-based segmentation method to obtain the target topology structure. Subsequently, the registration control points are extracted based on the target topology skeleton, which can break through the limitation of feature differences, improve the robustness of the algorithm to target transformation, and realize the automatic registration of multi-source images.

As two environmental pollutants of great concern, polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and nonylphenol (NP) often coexist in the environment and cause combined pollution. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out by varying parameters such as pH, the particle sizes of the PS-MPs, the initial concentration of NP, and metal ion content. The results showed that the particle size of the PS-MPs in the range tested (0.1, 1, 10, 50, and 100 μm) had a significant effect on their NP adsorption capacity. The NP adsorption process of the PS-MPs was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, while the intraparticle diffusion and Bangham models were also involved in determining the NP adsorption process of 0.1 μm PS-MPs. Both PS-MPs and NP significantly affected cell proliferation, which had been confirmed by reduced cell viability, a blocked cell cycle G1 phase, and elevated apoptosis by affecting the basic cell functions. Furthermore, the negative effects of 0.1 μm PS-MPs on cell proliferation and function were aggravated after the adsorption of NP. Further research on the potential health risks of PS-MPs combined with NP or other environmental contaminants is needed.

Primary renal lymphoma (PRL) is a rare disease, with no more than 70 cases reported in the literature. The present study reports the case of a 70-year-old woman with PRL. The patient was asymptomatic, however, a mass on the right kidney was identified incidentally during routine physical examination. Computed tomography revealed a mass in the right kidney that was 3.6 cm in diameter. Subsequently, right nephrectomy was performed. The histological evaluation of the nephrectomy specimen showed diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The patient was treated with 6-8 cycles of a cyclophosphamide, epirubicin, vindesine and dexamethasone regimen. Follow-up examination performed after 2 months of treatment revealed no evidence of local recurrence. The present study also reviewed 49 cases of PRL that have been reported since 1989. It was found that a shorter survival time was experienced by patients with bilateral PRL (mean, 21 months) compared with unilateral PRL (mean, 68 months). A shorter survival time was also experienced by patients who were treated with chemotherapy only (mean, 15.8 months) compared with those who were treated with combination chemotherapy and surgery (mean, 49.4 months). The preventive role of polysaccharide from the seeds of Plantago asiatica L. (PLCP) against reproductive system injury induced by nonylphenol (NP) was investigated. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed orally to NP 1 h after PLCP intragastric administration continuously for 45 days. The results showed that NP induced significant decrease in relative weight of testes and epididymis, changed testicular histomorphology, and disrupted hormone secretions. Moreover, oxidative stress occurred after NP exposure by overproduction of Malondialdehyde, lipid peroxidation, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and low activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. Furthermore, the induction of apoptosis and disturbance of PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway by NP were also proved. Interestingly, PLCP alleviated NP toxicity by improving antioxidant enzymes, recovering hormone secretions, inhibiting apoptosis and autophagy, which involves PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. These findings provide a good direction that PLCP may be a good candidate to help body defend against toxic substance, particularly endocrine disrupting chemicals induced reproductive toxicity.

Myricetin (Myr) is a phytochemical with many functional properties. However, its hydrophobicity, low bioavailability, and stability limit its application. In this study, octadecanoate oat β-glucan (OGE) was synthesized and gained recognition as a self-assembled micelle forming a polymer with a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 59.4 μg/mL. The Myr-loaded OGE micelle was then prepared and characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra. The water solubility of Myr was greatly enhanced by forming the Myr/OGE inclusion complex. Consequently, compared to free Myr, the retention of Myr in Myr-loaded OGE micelle was effectively increased during the intestinal digestion phase, and its antioxidant activity was also improved. Overall, our findings demonstrated the potential applications of OGE polymer for the development of prospective micelle in health food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical fields because they can aid in the delivery of hydrophobic functional compounds like Myr.
