2. Children's Imagination of the Divine: Creativity across Religions

Abstract

Earlier studies have concluded that the religious sphere is less open to creativity than are other areas of human activities. Also, it has been suggested that artistic freedom and creative expression are unwelcome in the domain of religious iconography. In the present study, we address this subject with regard to children's artistic expression of the divine (n = 1703) in five different cultural and religious environments: Japanese (Buddhism and Shinto), Iranian (Islam), Russian-Buryat (Buddhism, shamanism), Russian Slavic (Christian Orthodoxy) and French-speaking Swiss (Catholic and reformed Christianity). The Consensual Assessment Technique was used to access the creativity. The results globally supported the previous research on the positive role that domain knowledge plays in creativity. It is likely that the exposure to knowledge in the religious domain through education would not negatively impact on children's creativity in the domain of pictorial representations of the divine, at least in secularized societies. Results also revealed that a child's creative expression could be a function of his or her age. Obviously, with age and knowledge of the religious domain, older children would go more often beyond the simplistic or conventional representations of the divine. As for gender, no effect was found in four out of five samples.

Abstract

When confronted with the task to “draw god”, children have to solve a problem; they are being asked to produce a visual representation of an entity that they have never seen. It is true that some children may already have elaborated a pictorial repre-sentation of god (mentally or graphically) and for them, the task will seem easy. Other children will need to create a representation spontaneously. Resources for solving this problem are available within the child’s cultural context. For instance, the shape of the figure itself may be based on various religious representations of gods, iconic figurations of supernatural agents in fictional artefacts (paintings, movies, cartoons, etc.), advertisement, etc. The cultural context can also provide reference points for the valence attributed to colours or to different parts of an image composition. The drawings produced by children depends not only on their familiarity with these re-sources (socialization and educational aspects), but also on their cognitive abilities to grasp the concept of god, their emotional abilities to recognize and express the ac-companying feelings, artistic and physical skills, and the environmental resources provided for representing god. In choosing how they will represent god, and de-pending on their familiarity with and selection of contextual resources, children have to solve additional problems. For example, potential parental connotations of the con-cept of god can awaken attachment bonds to parental figures; religious prohibitions against creating representations of god can be in conflict with the requested task of drawing god; drawing a supernatural agent can activate skills for drawing an agent that is like a human being (with anthropomorphic and gender features, etc.) The pur-pose of this work is to integrate, to the extent possible, the results presented in parts II-V of this book, and to articulate the different factors in an integrated model that outlines possible strategies used to ca

Abstract

The development and functioning of representations of God are complex processes, in which different psychological and cultural factors mutually influence each other. Attachment is seen as a psychological factor that could provide us with new insights into the representation and communication of ideas and experiences regarding supernatural agents in children’s drawings and narratives. Our hypothesis is that securely attached children will use more God representation-related symbols in their drawings than children who are insecurely attached and that these symbols will have a referring and self-transcending character. In this chapter, we therefore explore children’s drawings of “God” and their accompanying narratives in relation to their attachment styles. After describing our theoretical framework, we discuss the research process, how we combined theory with the materials, and the most important findings and questions of the various subprojects by Master’s students in Groningen. We then present a qualitative analysis of 12 drawings by insecurely attached children and 12 drawings by securely attached children, focusing mainly on qualitative aspects of the children’s drawings of “God” and their use of religious symbols. Secure attachment turned out to be associated with more “God” representation-related symbols. Drawing aspects other than religious symbols can also be seen as relating to attachment. We therefore compare the occurrence of attachment characterizations of relationships with “God” as reflected in the drawings and narratives. In addition, we compare drawings by securely and insecurely attached children in terms of the padding of the paper and the use of anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic images of “God”. Finally, we focus on the concrete localization of “God” as drawn on the paper, as well as the figurative place where “God” was imagined. Our chapter ends up with conclusions and discussion

Abstract

The project “Drawings of gods: A Multicultural and Interdisciplinary Approach to Children’s Representations of Supernatural Agents” (Supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), grant number: CR11I1_156383) is an inter- and transdisciplinary project which aims to discover novel patterns in children’s representation of gods using the mixed-method (children’s drawings, narratives and questionnaires). Unlike previous studies mostly conducted within Western Christian context, this project is based on data from a larger diversity of countries and religious traditions (currently, 6’500 drawings from eight countries) and seeks to contribute to the lack of research in culture and interfaith variation of children’s representations. Primarily rooted in developmental psychology and psychology of religion, the project largely integrates religious studies, sociology and computer sciences to gain more insight into the complexity and diversity of children’s representations of supernatural agents. Three types of digital tools were developed to ensure the effective implementation of the project. Firstly, in order to make the collected drawings accessible to the whole interdisciplinary team of researchers, including international partners, an online database was created (http://ddd.unil.ch/). Secondly, the annotation tool “Gauntlet” was designed and created to meet the special needs of this research (https://d2d.vital-it.ch). Thirdly, project specific computer vision and image processing methods, such as colour detection, were developed to deal with the large amounts of data. One of the main challenges of the project is a necessity to test, rethink and rework the created digital tools to respond to specific needs of the interdisciplinary project and the unique character of children’s drawings. This required considerable time investment, financial resources and new skills on the part of researchers. We were faced with different types of problems, from the standardization of the quality of the scanned data to the architectural problems of the database, in order to better deal with the complexity and variety of collected data. Abstract

Cette recherche, menée dans deux établissements médico-sociaux (EMS) de Suisse romande cherche à mieux comprendre si et comment la prise en compte de la dimension spirituelle participe au bien-être des résidents. Basée sur un questionnaire et des entretiens approfondis, elle fait apparaître que les attentes des seniors résidant aujourd’hui en EMS correspondent en grande partie à l’ethos hérité des Eglises historiques. Les analyses des entretiens montrent aussi que les ressources spirituelles mobilisées pour affronter le vieillissement sont multidimensionnelles mais que les personnes se sentent parfois assez seules pour les mobiliser. La raison de cette solitude n’est pas dans le manque d’attention des directions des EMS considérés, qui accordent de l’importance au rôle des aumôniers. Il faut plutôt la chercher dans une difficulté de la génération des plus de 80 ans à parler de ce qui concerne l’intime dont fait partie la spiritualité. Rejoindre ces préoccupations reste un défi.

Abstract

The body of theoretical and empirical research led by chaplains and theologians between 2000 and 2018 is developing into a rich, diverse, and methodologically rigorous healthcare chaplaincy literature, which this review proposes to map. Online keyword and bibliographical searches and specialist recommendations yielded 199 relevant publications, which we analyzed in terms of methodology, topic, and results. On this basis, this article identifies and describes five key areas of the literature: chaplains' practices, spirituality, research, impact, and healthcare professionals' practices of spiritual care. The discussion further highlights that publications would benefit from greater conceptual clarity, common research standards, and more critical research designs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

When confronted with the task to “draw god”, children have to solve a problem; they are being asked to produce a visual representation of an entity that they have never seen. It is true that some children may already have elaborated a pictorial repre-sentation of god (mentally or graphically) and for them, the task will seem easy. Other children will need to create a representation spontaneously. Resources for solving this problem are available within the child’s cultural context. For instance, the shape of the figure itself may be based on various religious representations of gods, iconic figurations of supernatural agents in fictional artefacts (paintings, movies, cartoons, etc.), advertisement, etc. The cultural context can also provide reference points for the valence attributed to colours or to different parts of an image composition. The drawings produced by children depends not only on their familiarity with these re-sources (socialization and educational aspects), but also on their cognitive abilities to grasp the concept of god, their emotional abilities to recognize and express the ac-companying feelings, artistic and physical skills, and the environmental resources provided for representing god. In choosing how they will represent god, and de-pending on their familiarity with and selection of contextual resources, children have to solve additional problems. For example, potential parental connotations of the con-cept of god can awaken attachment bonds to parental figures; religious prohibitions against creating representations of god can be in conflict with the requested task of drawing god; drawing a supernatural agent can activate skills for drawing an agent that is like a human being (with anthropomorphic and gender features, etc.) The pur-pose of this work is to integrate, to the extent possible, the results presented in parts II-V of this book, and to articulate the different factors in an integrated model that outlines possible strategies used to carry out the project of drawing god
