7. Expanding Students' Ability to Conceptualise the Dynamics of Changing Places in the Teaching of Environmental Geography

Abstract

"Research has consistently found that pedagogy informed by knowledge of students' existing ideas is more efficient in promoting conceptual change than traditional methods of instruction". Learners in the sub-field of environmental geography exhibit preconceptions that frame and sometimes hinder their knowledge acquisition. Those preconceptions need to be harnessed and where appropriate displaced and replaced with more effective understandings if learning is to be successful. University educators have a crucial role to play in assisting this process. This paper examines a community-based teaching approach within the geography discipline at an Australian university deployed to clarify, then displace learners' preconceptions and replace them with more empowering capacities. The learning context involves a diverse range of university undergraduates undertaking environmental geography courses for the first time. The examination is framed by the notion of multiple forms of capital, some of which students bring with them to this learning context and others of which need to be acquired during the course of study. The paper employs an exploratory case study design, augmented by a qualitative analysis of students' and academics' experiences. The interdependent processes of displacing preconceptions and replacing them with heightened capacities are demonstrated to be crucial ingredients of capitalising (on) sustainable and sometimes transformative learning places.

19. How did they get there? A history of koalas on Queensland's islands.

Abstract

Most Queensland islands today have no koalas, but in the past several islands were inhabited by the iconic marsupial. Using historical research methods, this paper compiles what is known about the arrival of koalas on Queensland islands, both naturally occurring and translocated, and discusses their persistence, current status, environments and threats. Seventeen islands are identified as having a history of koalas with 13 of these islands having once been part of the koala's natural range. Two of these islands with natural populations plus four unoccupied islands received historical translocations as early as the 1920s and 1930s as a conservation tool or to boost tourism. Currently, 7 of the 17 islands still have koalas. For future research, the paper raises the important question about whether some Queensland islands are suitable habitat sanctuaries for koalas for further translocations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This dissertation provides a descriptive-analytic study of the reasons and influences underlying Japan's less than progressive policy record on wildlife preservation, domestically and globally, since 1980. This research is important for a number of reasons, but mainly it helps us to test a number of theoretical models about: policy-making in Japan; Japanese environmental diplomacy; social movements; and corporatism. I hypothesise that apart from a common sense of purpose that binds the different policy actors together, Japan's poor record on wildlife preservation is a derivative of the way environmental NGOs have been marginalised and excluded from the policy process. This hypothesis links to Japan's public safety, and food and economic security concerns whereby these concerns tend to frame and guide policy-making on wildlife and nature issues. Using case study and participant observation methodologies to gather empirical evidence, this dissertation analyses both Japanese state behaviour towards global and domestic wildlife issues, and the changing relationships between the Japanese state, foreign pressure and environmental NGOs, in order to confirm or deny the hypothesis. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Ramsar Convention are the two environmental regimes which provide the context and issues for the analyses. The research concludes that there is convincing evidence to support the hypothesis. The research also reveals the positive, although subtle, sea changes which are occurring in Japanese environmental politics in the light of the continuing changes taking place in both Japan's broader political economy and in the international community.

Abstract

[Abstract]: Deploying the principles of autoethnography, this paper reflects on the authors’ respective and shared itineraries as mobile academics in two Australian non-metropolitan universities. These itineraries traverse the two universities and within one of them two campuses, differently configured faculties and divisions, several disciplines and paradigms and the multiple roles of academics. Conceptually the paper is framed and informed by the notion of ecologies of practice. This notion highlights the commonalities and divergences evident among system and institution-level policies, campus and faculty practices and academics’ own subjectivities. It provides therefore a useful theoretical lens for analysing the professional learning being carried out by the authors in their mobilities across and within the two universities – focused specifically on their work as ateleological decision-makers, double agents and transformative researchers – as well as for making explicit both the potential of and the limitations on that learning.

40. Why Japan Will Not Give up Whaling

Abstract

Despite enduring so much foreign criticism for its pro-whaling stance, why does Japan continue to push for a resumption of commercial whaling? By exploring this question we can become more cognisant of the wider influences on Japanese state behaviour from societal groups in domestic politics and accepted cultural traditions. We can then understand why foreign pressure has difficulty in resonating within Japan. This paper analyses Japanese diplomacy at the two recent Meetings of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (1997 and 2000) and the International Whaling Commission (2000 and 2001), and also the apparent paradoxes of Japan's having a popular whale-watching industry and the Japanese public's increasing engagement in whale rescues. From these negotiations, it is clear that Japan's pro-whaling stance underscores the principles that it holds as important, such as respect for self-determination, respect for the legally binding rules of international treaties, and respect for science-based management as the basis for regulating the international use of resources when cultural values and preferences differ so greatly. It also shows that the current misinformation, polarisation, posturing, dogmatism and hostility dominating the whaling debate is not helpful to anyone. Furthermore, the implicit love for living whales which is associated with a whale-watching industry and rescuing stranded whales is not necessarily incompatible with wishing to harvest whales. These apparent inconsistencies can coexist because they link to Buddhist notions of respect for whales.

Abstract

AbstractSituated ethics (Piper & Simons 2005; Simons & Usher 2000) provides a potentially powerful conceptual lens for reflecting on the research significance and researcher subjectivities entailed in contemporary educational research projects. This is the idea that research ethics is most appropriately understood and enacted in the specific contexts of such projects, rather than by reference to timeless and universal codes. This proposition is helpful in drawing attention to the crucial networks of aspirations and interests that bind and separate stakeholders in those projects.The authors illustrate this argument through a reflexive interrogation of their respective empirical doctoral studies (Danaher 2003; Danaher 2001). One study focused on multiple and conflicting constructions of wildlife preservation as a site of Japanese environmental politics and policy-making; the other examined educational provision for mobile show communities as a case of Australian Traveller Education.Both projects required the researchers to negotiate tentative and sometimes uneasy relations with research participants that veered between impartial and disinterested observers and partial and interested advocates. In engaging in those negotiations, the researchers enacted situated and provisional ethical positions derived from increasingly explicit assumptions about both the significance of their particular research and the importance of acknowledging their own subjectivities in making claims about that significance. Thus situated ethics is a vital element of evaluating the value as much as the values of conducting research with non-government organisations and on showgrounds.
