Disorganized morphogenesis of arteries, veins, capillaries, and lymphatic vessels results in vascular malformations. Most individuals with isolated vascular malformations have postzygotic (mosaic), activating pathogenic variants in a handful of oncogenes within the PI3K–RAS–MAPK pathway (Padia et al., Laryngoscope Investig Otolaryngol 4: 170–173 [2019]). Activating pathogenic variants in the gene PIK3CA, which encodes for the catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, are present in both lymphatic and venous malformations as well as arteriovenous malformations in other complex disorders such as CLOVES syndrome (congenital, lipomatous, overgrowth, vascular malformations, epidermal anevi, scoliosis) (Luks et al., Pediatr Dev Pathol 16: 51 [2013]; Luks et al., J Pediatr 166: 1048–1054.e1–5 [2015]; Al-Olabi et al., J Clin Invest 128: 1496–1508 [2018]). These vascular malformations are part of the PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum, a spectrum of entities that have regionalized disordered growth due to the presence of tissue-restricted postzygotic PIK3CA pathogenic variants (Keppler-Noreuil et al., Am J Med Genet A 167A: 287–295 [2015]). Cerebrofacial vascular metameric syndrome (CVMS; also described as cerebrofacial arteriovenous metameric syndrome, Bonnet–Dechaume–Blanc syndrome, and Wyburn–Mason syndrome) is the association of retinal, facial, and cerebral vascular malformations (Bhattacharya et al., Interv Neuroradiol 7: 5–17 [2001]; Krings et al., Neuroimaging Clin N Am 17: 245–258 [2007]). The segmental distribution, the presence of tissue overgrowth, and the absence of familial recurrence are all consistent with CVMS being caused by a postzygotic mutation, which has been hypothesized by previous authors (Brinjiki et al., Am J Neuroradiol 39: 2103–2107 [2018]). However, the genetic cause of CVMS has not yet been described. Here, we present three individuals with CVMS and mosaic activating pathogenic variants within the gene PIK3CA. We propose that CVMS be recognized as part of the PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum, providing justification for future trials using pharmacologic PIK3CA inhibitors (e.g., alpelisib) for these difficult-to-treat patients.

IMPACT (Integrated Multi-use Phased Array Common Tile), is a reconfigurable building block for next-generation phased arrays developed under the DARPA Arrays at Commercial Timescales (ACT) program. The goal of ACT is to develop a common technology base for Electronically Scanned Array (ESA) systems. The IMPACT beamformer has been integrated and tested with six different antennas to date, with more planned in the near future. One of the most successful examples is integration with a 2-12GHz wideband antenna from SI2 Technologies. This paper will summarize the beamforming measurements taken with the integrated IMPACT beamformer and SI Technologies wideband antenna.

This paper discusses recent beamforming measurements with the Common Module beamformer developed under the DARPA Arrays at Commercial Timescales (ACT) program paired with an 8×8 dual polarized radiator. Both represent state-of-the-art performance at an affordable price point. These building blocks are well suited for emerging radar systems that must perform multiple missions.

Embolisation of pathologic systemic collateral arteries to the bronchial artery system can be an effective option for haemoptysis control. Globally, tuberculosis is the most frequent cause of haemoptysis, but bronchitis, bronchiectasis, bronchogenic carcinoma and other inflammatory diseases are more frequent in the western world. The aetiology cannot be determined in 30% of the patients. In the majority of cases, a bronchial artery is the bleeding source, but in approx. 33% of the cases another systemic artery causes the bleeding. The method is non-invasive and entails few complications.

The mantis genus Tenodera is composed of several species distributed across Africa, Asia and Australasia, along with recent human introductions to North America. Species of the genus are morphologically similar and utilise equivalent habitats across their distribution. Relationships among these species and the morphological characters used to diagnose them have never been formally tested, leaving authors to disagree as to the species composition of Tenodera. With DNA sequence data from five molecular loci and morphological characters from male genitalia, we reconstructed the phylogeny of Tenodera using multiple optimality criteria. All included species were found to be monophyletic in analyses of the combined data. Tenodera sinensis and T. bokiana were both supported as distinct species recovered in separate clades, resolving confusion as to their placement and classification. Our analysis identified a previously undescribed species of Tenodera collected in India, recovered as sister to T. aridifolia and T. sinensis, and exhibiting distinct male genital morphology. In light of the phylogeny, we characterise for the first time, and investigate the evolution of, the male genitalia, which allowed us to discover several transitions in structural forms. We also consider the connection of these transitions to sexual cannibalism and how this behaviour may have led to rapid evolution of the male genitalia.
