Moving beyond speculation on immediate and mediated interpretations of presence that saturate our field, we drift toward new orientations regarding presence that capture a metered togetherness: a disjuncted assembly emerging from both localized and networked logistics. Presence is not always signaled by the coterminous junction of shared time and space, but as the multiple trajectories that emerge in its wake.

Wine flavor and quality are determined by the assessment of multiple sensory stimuli, including aroma, taste, and mouthfeel. It is therefore important to consider the contribution of as many metabolites as possible when attempting to relate wine composition to quality. In this study, partial least squares regression of the volatile (untargeted headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry), non-volatile (untargeted reverse-phase ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry), and combined metabolite profiles were used to predict Pinot Noir wine quality ratings as assessed by experts. Non-volatile metabolite profiles predicted wine quality ratings better than volatile metabolite profiles, suggesting that the non-volatile composition of Pinot Noir wines contributes to quality perception to a greater extent than the volatile composition. This was underscored by descriptive sensory analysis, which found that taste and mouthfeel attributes were better correlated with wine quality ratings than aroma attributes. Important predictors of Pinot Noir wine quality were also characterized. Some new relationships between wine metabolites and quality ratings were found: dipeptides and unsaturated fatty acids were positively related to Pinot Noir wine quality, while N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide and xanthine were negatively associated.

However, the exact place and time of this marriage had not been verified until now, which left many lacunae in the study of the life of this composer. In an attempt to shed light on this event, this article presents, for the first time, the marriage certificate of Fernando Sor, to which has been added an analysis of this document and the circumstances surrounding the union recorded in it.

Dans le but decombler cette lacune, le présent article aborde cette question en détail, en cherchant à comprendrela mode de la guitare durant cette période, en montrant comment les périodiques ont progressivementmonopolisé le marché de la musique pour guitare grâce à une série de stratégies soigneusementconçues par les éditeurs. À cette fin, une multitude d’annonces, de partitions musicales et decatalogues ont été examinés, révélant une constellation complexe de périodiques, dont certains nesemblent pas avoir été étudiés auparavant. In his work titled ‘Dance Curves: On the Dances of Palucca’ (1926), Wassily Kandisky translates two postures of the German Expressionist choreographer Gret Palucca from photographs into line drawings. The drawings are a study, but they are neither pictorial, nor straightforwardly representational. Staging an encounter between Dance Curves and Hannah Arendt’s investigation into thinking as both an interrupted and interruptive activity, this essay argues for a poetics of appearance as it is constituted by nonconforming acts of critique.Negotiating conflicts that shape a politics of recognition for criticism which deliberately or implicitly refutes utility, I articulate a process of appearance of meaning with differential relation to modernist concerns for interpretation, dissenting from rationalist and objectivist traditions that have dominated theatre and performance criticism since the Enlightenment. What happens when I disavow the drawings from the images, remove them from the source? Perhaps in such a place, we might find critique as a process of deliberately mishandled translation, as an occupation of an idea shifted elsewhere, as a displacement of meaning. Appearance shapes itself around slippages of attention that depart from the work of performance.In this essay, I turn to how these slippages fold outwards from the encounter, to the political nexus between performance and its world. In Arendt, I locate a means through which forms of thinking rendered as criticism constitute a resistant poetics to normative modes of paying attention, operating beyond what Bojana Kunst calls ‘the ready-made possibilities of discourse’ (2015, 13) under neoliberalism, that is, the ‘pre-established models of criticality and reflexivity’ to which art and artistic subjectivity often partake (ibid.)

Fatty acids play important roles in the maintenance of cell membrane, viability and overall metabolism of wine yeasts (particularly Saccharomyces cerevisiae) during adverse winemaking conditions. We previously showed that linoleic acid supplementation markedly affect aroma compound production of S. cerevisiae wine strains. However, very little is known about how other commonly found fatty acids in grape juice modulate the growth and metabolism of S. cerevisiae. We aimed to determine the individual effect of five fatty acids on fermentation patterns and metabolism of two wine yeast strains (S. cerevisiae EC1118 and X5). Microvinification was performed at 15 °C by supplementing a grape juice (individually) with three different concentrations of saturated (palmitic acid), unsaturated (oleic, linoleic and γ-linolenic acids) and short-chain (hexanoic acid) fatty acids. Metabolite profiles of the resulting wines were determined using Gas-chromatography coupled to Mass-spectrometry (GC–MS). Our data show that the addition of γ-linolenic acid to the juice caused the production of higher amounts of amino and organic acids (except isoleucine and 2-oxoglutaric acid) in wines when fermented by EC1118, while palmitic acid supplementation showed similar trends when fermented by X5. The effect of linoleic acid was independent of yeast strains and we observed a global reduction of amino and organic acids (except pyruvic acid) while increased production of most of the fatty acids other than the supplemented ones. Our data clearly suggest that pre-fermentative supplementation of different fatty acids indeed influenced the growth and metabolism of wine yeasts in a different way. Thus, attention needs to be paid not only to the wine yeast strain used during the winemaking but also to the overall grape juice composition, including fatty acids, to obtain the desired wine characteristics.

A new model for grapevines (Vitis vinifera) is the first perennial fruit crop model using the Agricultural Production System sIMulator (APSIM) Next Generation framework. Modules for phenology, light interception, carbohydrate allocation, yield formation and berry composition were adapted or added into APSIM Next Generation to represent the nature of fruit-bearing vines. The simulated grapevine phenological cycle starts with the dormancy phase triggered by a critical photoperiod in autumn, and then goes through the subsequent phenophases sequentially and finally returns to dormancy for a new cycle. The canopy microclimate module within APSIM Next Generation was extended to allow for row crop light interception. The carbohydrate arbitrator was enhanced to consider both sink strength and sink priority to reflect carbohydrate reserve as a concurrent competing sink. Weather conditions and source–sink ratio at critical developmental stages were used to determine potential grapevine yield components, e.g. bunch number, berry number and berry fresh weight. The model was calibrated and tested extensively using four detailed data sets. The model captured the variations in the timing of measured budburst, flowering and véraison over 15 seasons across New Zealand for five different varieties. The calculated seasonal dynamics of light interception by the row and alley were consistent with field observations. The model also reproduced the dynamics of dry matter and carbohydrate reserve of different organs, and the wide variation in yield components caused by seasonal weather conditions and pruning regimes. The modelling framework developed in this work can also be used for other perennial fruit crops.

Sustainable crop production implies high efficiency of field operations and protection of the soil as a natural resource. Soil physical fertility is threatened by compaction, especially deep soil horizons for which remediation is more critical. Increased soil compaction, linked to the increase of agricultural equipment weight, causes yield losses on spring and summer crops. To avoid soil compaction and ensure field operations efficiency, including satisfactory crop production in a cost-effective way, field readiness prediction is necessary. Field readiness is defined by the combination of soil workability (soil suitability for cultural operations) and soil trafficability (soil capacity to support machinery during traffic without soil physical degradation). Available tools focused on one part of the problem, e.g. soil compaction risk in deep soil horizon, or possibility of efficient field operation ; each has usually been built for a specific pedoclimatic context, which questions its application in a broader context. Available tools also frequently need to be upgraded to better consider compaction risk according to machinery evolution. The J-DISTAS project (2019-2022) aims at evaluating and improving these tools, and structuring them to create a prototype of interoperable tools to predict field readiness. The resulting tool will be based on the combination of two mechanistic models (Terranimo for soil compaction and the CHN crop model for soil water content), pedotransfer functions to estimate soil water potential and soil workability, and a decisional tool of field readiness build from expert knowledge. Its ability to predict field readiness and its sensibility to input data will be evaluated. The developed inter-operable tools could be used as a decision support tool that includes field readiness in strategic decisions, conception of cropping systems in the context of global changes, or optimization of mechanical cost for equipment in agricultural machinery, and will help to soil physical quality protection.

Nitrogen (N) recycling is a key mechanism to ensure the sustainability of miscanthus production with no or small fertiliser inputs, but little is known on the subject in miscanthus species other than the most cultivated Miscanthus × giganteus. This field experiment on Miscanthus × giganteus and Miscanthus sinensis quantified plant biomass and N stock dynamics during two years. Endogenous net N fluxes, calculated by the difference in plant N content throughout time, were higher in Miscanthus × giganteus than in Miscanthus sinensis. Indeed, 79 kg N ha-1 and 105 to 197 kg N ha-1 were remobilized during spring and autumn respectively for Miscanthus × giganteus, as opposed to 13 to 25 kg N ha-1 and 46 to 128 kg N ha-1 for Miscanthus sinensis. However, their N recycling efficiency, defined as the ratio between N remobilisation fluxes and the maximum above-ground N content, did not differ significantly. It ranged from 8 to 27% for spring remobilisation and from 63 to 74% and 24 to 38% for autumn remobilization calculated on above-ground and below-ground N respectively. Exogenous N, the main source of N to constitute maximum plant N content for all genotypes, was provided by fertilisation (22 to 24%) and organic matter mineralisation or other sources (43 to 59%). During winter, 50 to 56% of plant N content was lost. Abscised leaves constituted an additional loss of 6 to 12%. Our results show that Miscanthus sinensis is as efficient as Miscanthus × giganteus and as performant as other perennial species concerning N functioning.

Seasonal differences in weather conditions cause marked variation in grapevine yield. However, quantitative relationships between various yield components and climatic factors at field scales are still lacking. By using a long-term field trial, we quantified the correlation between weather conditions during the key development stages and the yield components of Vitis vinifera L. Sauvignon blanc growing under cool-climate conditions. A long-term phenology and yield monitoring trial using both two-cane and four-cane trained vertically shoot positioned (VSP) Sauvignon blanc vines was established in four vineyards in Marlborough, New Zealand in 2004. Phenology, bunch number, berry mass, yield and meteorology records were collated. A multivariable mixed linear model was used to assess the relationship between various yield components and weather conditions. The critical periods for each yield component and weather factor were optimised based on the maximum likelihood returned from the mixed linear model. The optimised critical periods of temperature for all yield components occurred mainly before 50 % flowering either in the previous season (during inflorescence initiation) and the current season, indicating the importance of the pre-flowering period on yield formation. Out of all weather factors, maximum daily temperature had the largest effect on bunch number and overall yield and strongly influenced berry number and bunch mass. Rainfall near flowering time had a negative effect on berry mass and bunch mass, but post-flowering rainfall had a strong positive effect. The statistical model explained 60 to 85 percent of the seasonal variations in bunch number, berry number, berry and bunch mass and yield per vine.

New Zealand Sauvignon blanc (SB) wines are characterised by a distinctive combination of tropical-fruity and green-herbaceous aromatic compounds. The influence of sunlight exposure of grape clusters on juice and wine composition was investigated, with the aim of manipulating aromatic compounds in SB wine. In the absence of basal leaf removal SB clusters naturally exposed to sunlight were riper than shaded clusters, evidenced by higher total soluble solids (TSS) and proline, and lower malic acid, 3-isobutyl-2-methoxypyrazine (IBMP) and arginine. Volatile thiols in wines did not differ between shaded and exposed clusters. At equivalent TSS, cluster exposure had little or no effect on malic acid concentration. Conversely, wine from shaded clusters had almost double the IBMP concentration of wine from exposed clusters at equivalent TSS. The effects on SB juice and wine composition of natural variations in cluster microclimate are not comparable with the effects of cluster exposure created through leaf removal.

Sesquiterpenes are an important class of molecules, with roles ranging from pollination and signalling to defense mechanisms. Despite their apparent importance, the limited number of commercial standards has hindered their study and precise quantification. Herein, we report the syntheses of fourteen labelled sesquiterpenes with a high level of deuterium incorporation (>95%) for applications in MS-based studies.

Grape marc, also known as grape pomace, is an underutilized biowaste composed predominantly of grape skin and seeds that is produced as a byproduct of winemaking on the million-tonne scale annually. The most important high-value current use of grape marc is in the production of oenological tannins, widely used additives in the food and beverage industry. More commonly, grape marc is simply either disposed of or used as feed or fertilizer. With recent evidence showing that extracts enriched in grape tannins contain significant amounts of the thiol precursors Cys-3SH and GSH-3SH and the possibility that these could influence food and beverage aroma, it was decided to investigate grape pomace extraction procedures in order to try to define extraction protocols that could maximize the recovery of these compounds from grape marc. For political philosopher Hannah Arendt, action is also that which inserts us into the world, makes possible our public appearance and our political participation. In performance, action is that which invites us in, marks or blurs the boundaries between public and private, theatrical gesture and its spectating. In writing about performance, I am confronted with action two-fold. In the instance in which I encounter it in the live moment, raw and incomplete; and in the textual gesture I extend in return. This paper considers the relationship between critical writing about performance and training practice, through an exploration of action. It draws on Arendt’s philosophy to examine the ways in which action operates in pedagogical approaches to critical writing. It does so by considering the plural modes of action and representation as found in a Jackson Pollock painting inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Diana Damian Martin proposes in this chapter that performance criticism operates as a kind of “phenomenological poesis”—an emergence that is itself a form of creative production. Damian Martin is navigating here the channels the interlink action, perception and thought, and she draws on Hannah Arendt’s meditations on the very nature of appearance to aid in that navigation. Here, as elsewhere, the argument concerns ways of knowing that are always emergent, particularly as Damian Martin’s chief focus is on “live writing”—criticism which responds to the performative event as it unfolds, and as such not only forms part of the performance it is “perceiving”, but, in Damian Martin’s words, “marks its own eventness”.
