Little is known about the portion of the Milky Way lying beyond the Galactic center at distances of more than 9 kiloparsec from the Sun. These regions are opaque at optical wavelengths because of absorption by interstellar dust, and distances are very large and hard to measure. We report a direct trigonometric parallax distance of [Formula: see text] kiloparsec obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array to a water maser source in a region of active star formation. These measurements allow us to shed light on Galactic spiral structure by locating the Scutum-Centaurus spiral arm as it passes through the far side of the Milky Way and to validate a kinematic method for determining distances in this region on the basis of transverse motions., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors, some rights reserved; exclusive licensee American Association for the Advancement of Science. Aims: Most models identify the X-ray bright North Polar Spur (NPS) with a hot interstellar (IS) bubble in the Sco-Cen star-forming region at ≃130 pc. An opposite view considers the NPS as a distant structure associated with Galactic nuclear outflows. Constraints on the NPS distance can be obtained by comparing the foreground IS gas column inferred from X-ray absorption to the distribution of gas and dust along the line of sight. Absorbing columns towards shadowing molecular clouds simultaneously constrain the CO-H 2 conversion factor., Methods: We derived the columns of X-ray absorbing matter N Habs from spectral fitting of dedicated XMM-Newton observations towards the NPS southern terminus (l II ≃ 29°, b II ≃ +5 to +11°). The distribution of the IS matter was obtained from absorption lines in stellar spectra, 3D dust maps and emission data, including high spatial resolution CO measurements recorded for this purpose., Results: N Habs varies from ≃ 4.3 to ≃ 1.3 × 10 21 cm -2 along the 19 fields. Relationships between X-ray brightness, absorbing column and hardness ratio demonstrate a brightness decrease with latitude governed by increasing absorption. The comparison with absorption data, local and large-scale dust maps rules out a NPS near side closer than 300 pc. The correlation between N Habs and the reddening increases with the sightline length from 300 pc to 4 kpc and is the tightest with Planck τ 353 GHz -based reddening, suggesting a much larger distance. N(H)/E(B-V) τ ≃ 4.1 × 10 21 cm -2 mag -1 , close to Fermi-Planck determinations. N Habs absolute values are compatible with HI-CO clouds at -5 ≤ V LSR ≤ +25 to +45 km s -1 and a NPS potentially far beyond the Local Arm. A shadow cast by a b=+9° molecular cloud constrains X CO in that direction to ≤ 1.0 × 10 20 cm -2 K -1 km -1 s. The average X CO over the fields is ≤ 0.75 × 10 20 cm -2 K -1 km -1 s.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, promotes proinflammatory changes in the endothelium that lead to the recruitment of leukocytes. The host immune response to infection results in increased levels of IFN-gamma in the serum and lesions of Lyme disease patients that correlate with greater severity of disease. Therefore, the effect of IFN-gamma on the gene expression profile of primary human endothelial cells exposed to B. burgdorferi was determined. B. burgdorferi and IFN-gamma synergistically augmented the expression of 34 genes, 7 of which encode chemokines. Six of these (CCL7, CCL8, CX3CL1, CXCL9, CXCL10, and CXCL11) attract T lymphocytes, and one (CXCL2) is specific for neutrophils. Synergistic production of the attractants for T cells was confirmed at the protein level. IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and LPS also cooperated with IFN-gamma to induce synergistic production of CXCL10 by the endothelium, indicating that IFN-gamma potentiates inflammation in concert with a variety of mediators. An in vitro model of the blood vessel wall revealed that an increased number of human T lymphocytes traversed the endothelium exposed to B. burgdorferi and IFN-gamma, as compared with unstimulated endothelial monolayers. In contrast, addition of IFN-gamma diminished the migration of neutrophils across the B. burgdorferi-activated endothelium. IFN-gamma thus alters gene expression by endothelia exposed to B. burgdorferi in a manner that promotes recruitment of T cells and suppresses that of neutrophils. This modulation may facilitate the development of chronic inflammatory lesions in Lyme disease.

It is thought that Galactic cosmic-ray nuclei are gradually accelerated to high energies (up to about 300 TeV per nucleon, where 1 TeV is 10(12) eV) in the expanding shock waves connected with the remnants of powerful supernova explosions. However, this conjecture has eluded direct observational confirmation since it was first proposed in 1953 (ref. 3). Enomoto et al. claim to have finally found definitive evidence that corroborates this model, proposing that very-high-energy, TeV-range, gamma-rays from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946 are due to the interactions of energetic nuclei in this region. Here we argue that their claim is not supported by the existing multiwavelength spectrum of this source. The search for the origin(s) of Galactic cosmic-ray nuclei may be closing in on the long-suspected supernova-remnant sources, but it is not yet over.

We report millimeter observations of the line of sight to the recently discovered soft gamma repeater SGR 1627-41, which has been tentatively associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) G337.0-0.1. Among the eight molecular clouds along the line of sight to SGR 1627-41, we show that SNR G337.0-0.1 is probably interacting with one of the most massive giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Galaxy, at a distance of 11 kpc from the Sun. Based on the high extinction to the persistent X-ray counterpart of SGR 1627-41, we present evidence for an association of this new soft gamma repeater (SGR) with the SNR G337.0-0.1; they both appear to be located on the near side of the GMC. This is the second SGR located near an extraordinarily massive GMC. We suggest that SGR 1627-41 is a neutron star with a high transverse velocity ( approximately 1000 km s-1) escaping the young ( approximately 5000 yr) SNR G337.0-0.1.
