Abstract

International audience; Context : In 2000, the European Parliament set out a framework (European Water Framework Directive) for managing and protecting water bodies in Europe. Classification of water bodies into «ecological status» is a key issue for the implementation of that framework. For lakes, the assessment of this status is based on biological (e.g . fish, phytoplankton and macrophyte), physical-chemical and hydro-morphological indicators. The physical-chemical and phytoplankton indicators are based on 4 observations given by integrated samples over the growing season during one year for a 6 years management plan. The sampling occur in the euphotic zone over the deepest point of the lake. However, in large lakes, ecological parameters, used for water quality assessment (e.g . chlorophyll-a concentration and Secchi depth), exhibit strong spatial-temporal heterogeneities. Consequently, the representativeness of those data versus the whole lake might be questionable and needs to be verified (Kiefer et al., 2015). The objective is to evaluate how spatial and temporal heterogeneities in chlorophyll-a may impact the assessment of Lake Geneva ecological status; we propose to combine remote sensing data and 3D modelling

Abstract

International audience; Combined archaeological and ecological investigations in a large ancient oak forest in Central France have revealed a dense network of ancient human settlements dating from the Roman period. We demonstrate a strong correlation between present-day forest plant diversity patterns and the location of Roman farm buildings. Plant species richness strongly increases toward the center of the settlements, and the frequency of neutrophilous and nitrogen-demanding species is higher. This pattern is paralleled by an increase in soil pH, available P, and δ15N, indicating the long-term impact of former agricultural practices on forest biogeochemical cycles. These extensive observations in a forested region on acid soils complement and confirm previous results from a single Roman settlement on limestone. Ancient Roman agricultural systems are increasingly being identified in contemporary French forests; the broad extent and long-lasting effects of previous cultivation shown in this study require that land-use history be considered as a primary control over biodiversity variations in many forest landscapes, even after millennia of abandonment.

49. Impacts of land abandonment and broom colonization (Cytisus scoparius L.) on soil and vegetation of a mid-elevation pasture of the Chaîne des Puys (Massif Central, France)

Abstract

Colonization of the abandoned pastures of the Chaîne des Puys (French Massif central) by broom (Cytisus scoparius L.) is a frequent occurrence. The study aims at evaluating the impact of abandonment and colonisation by broom on vegetation diversity and soils properties particularly as regards C, N stocks and contents and N mineralization. Different colonization stages were sampled: 50 plots were established in a grazed pasture, in an abandoned pasture weakly colonized by broom and in broom stands of increasing age and cover. On each plot, stand measurements were achieved, vegetation was recorded in order to establish Ellenberg values. Soils were sampled and analysed on a subset of 33 plots to assess main physical and chemical properties in particular C and N contents and isotopic abundance in 15N (delta 15N). Results showed that species number was strongly reduced after land abandonment and before broom colonization. Broom colonization enhanced species reduction by eliminating many grassland species this benefiting to ligneous species. Ellenberg values showed an increase in soil moisture, soil acidity and nitrogen availability with colonization and these findings were confirmed by soil analyses. Soils after abandonment and before colonization by broom showed a lower bulk density, a higher content in C and N and a higher potential nitrification whereas C and N stocks remained constant due to inverse change between bulk density and contents. Colonization by broom in the following stages led to a moderate increase in C and N contents, potential nitrification, C and N stocks whereas delta15N remained unchanged. This study emphasizes the key role of grazing and the moderate role of broom colonization after land abandonment on soils organic matter content and N dynamics., Les pâturages du Massif Central sont assez fréquemment soumis à l'abandon et à la colonisation par le genêt à balai (Cytisus scoparius L.). L'étude présentée cherche à évaluer l'impact de cet abandon et de cette colonisation arbustive sur les sols et la végétation d'une pâture de la Chaîne des Puys. Différents stades d'abandon d'une pâture et de sa colonisation par le genêt ont été échantillonnés: 50 placettes ont été installées dans une pâture gérée, dans une pâture abandonnée faiblement colonisée et dans des peuplements de genêts jeunes et âgés. Sur chaque placette, après avoir mesuré le peuplement de genêts, des relevés de flore ont été effectués et les valeurs Ellenberg indicatrices des conditions de sol et de milieu ont été calculées. Les sols ont été analysés pour déterminer leurs principales caractéristiques physico-chimiques notamment leur teneur en C et N, et leur potentiel de minéralisation en N par incubation au laboratoire. L'abondance isotopique en 15N (delta 15N) des sols a aussi été mesurée. Les résultats montrent que le nombre d'espèces diminue fortement lors de l'abandon de la pâture puis avec la fermeture du milieu par le genêt. L'évolution de la composition de la végétation suggère une augmentation de l'acidité, de l'humidité et de la disponibilité en azote au cours de la colonisation. L'évolution des principales propriétés des sols pour les différents stades confirme ces résultats, les changements étant nettement plus marqués dans le premier que dans le second horizon. Le passage de la pâture gérée à la pâture abandonnée non colonisée s'accompagne: d'une forte baisse de la densité apparente, d'une augmentation relative des teneurs en C et N, d'une diminution du delta 15N, d'une hausse de la nitrification potentielle alors que les stocks en C et N du sol restent stables entre raison de l'évolution opposée entre les teneurs et la densité apparente. La fermeture par le genêt dans les stades suivants accentue l'augmentation de la teneur en C et N et de la nitrification alors que les stocks augmentent modérément et que le delta15N reste stable. Cette étude souligne l'impact fort de l'abandon du pâturage puis du rôle plus modéré de la colonisation par le genêt sur le taux de matière organique et la dynamique de l'azote dans les sols.
