Rice bran oil emulsion beverage is a functional food rich in antioxidants and beneficial for human health, particularly to prevent metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is defined by a waist circumference of > 90 cm and two additional criteria out of five, namely triglycerides (TG) > 150 mg/dL, HDL-C < 40 mg/dL, and/or 140/90 mmHg, blood pressure, and fasting blood sugar of 100 mg / dL. This research aimed to examine the level of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) after the intervention of taking rice bran emulsion and determine the parameter shifted on metabolic syndrome. This study was a parallel-group, double-blind study with randomized controlled trials. The subjects were divided into two groups: treatment and control. The first group (n=19) received two glasses of rice bran emulsion per day for four weeks, while the control group (n=17) received two glasses of placebo per day for four weeks. Different intakes of fat, iron, and vitamin B1 were present in the control group before and after the intervention (p=0.05). The data were analyzed using independent T-test samples against differences for each group from before and after interventions. The formulation of rice bran emulsion was prepared using bran oil, water, sugar ester, CMC, sucralose, salt, and flavor. The study demonstrated that TNF-α levels in both groups decreased from 6.8 ± 7.3 to 4.7 ± 0.6 (pg/dL) but were not significant (p>0.05). Nutrition changes influenced the intakes of fat, iron, and vitamin B1 but did not influence metabolic syndrome parameters of the treatment group. The level of nutritional adequacy-fat, iron and vitamin B1 pre-and post-intervention in both groups were significantly different. In conclusion, the levels of serum TNF-α on the treatment group had a decrease than those in the control group; however, it is not significant. Further study needs to be done to verify this finding. Introduction: The objectives of this study were to examine the effect of β-carotene on cells proliferation and differentiation, comexin (Cx43) and β-casein (Csn2) gene expression of mammary gland cells line (HC11). Cx43 involves development of gap junction intercellular communication, while Csn2 induces milk synthesis in differentiated mammary gland cells. Method: The HC11 cells were grown in medium RPMI 1640 supplemented with 10% heat-inactivated Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), 50 mg/ml streptomycin and enhanced by epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin, hydrocortisone and prolactin. Final concentration of β-carotene in medium was 0.5,1.5 and 5.0 μM respectively. Cell proliferation was determined by a colorimetric assay for assessing cell viability (MlT assays). Gene expression was analysed by reverse trancriptation polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and gel electrophoresis. Results: Triton X-114 as a negative control significantly decreased proliferation of HC11 cell line as compared to its control (<0.05%). Meanwhile, β-carotene even in supraphysiologycal concentration [5μM:] did not affect proliferation of HC11 cell line. The structure of mammosphere of HC11 cell line treated with supraphysiological concentration β-carotene [5.0 μM] was largest with higher density and tightly connected with their neighbouring cells. Cx43 and Csn2 saw higher expression on β-carotene treated HC11 cell lines. Conclusion: β-casein did not inhibit cell proliferation; meanwhile, differentiation of mammary gland cells line (HC11) represented by mammosphere development, and genes expression of comexin (Cx43) and β-casein (Csn2) were induced by β-carotene. Background: Trochlear dysplasia is a condition in which the femoral trochlea has an abnormal shape and function. Trochleoplasty aims to change the shape of the trochlea in order to stabilize an unstable patella. This study compared clinical outcomes and recurrent instability after surgery between sulcus deepening trochleoplasty (Lyon) and Bereiter trochleoplasty in patients with high-grade trochlear dysplasia., Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis comparing Bereiter and Lyon trochleoplasty based on PRISMA guidelines regarding clinical outcome and recurrent instability for high-grade trochlear dysplasia. Searching on five databases, we found 11 eligible studies with a total of 520 subjects to be analysed. Studies were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated using Review Manager 5.4 or equivalent., Results: Both techniques showed no differences in sulcus angle, return-to-sport rate, and satisfactory rate. The IKDC and Kujala scores showed good outcomes but were not significantly different. IKDC score was not different after analysis between Bereiter and Lyon techniques. The pooled improvement of IKDC score on both subgroups was 24.39 (95% CI 21.14-27.65). A pooled analysis of 10 studies found that the Kujala score did not differ between groups with Bereiter and Lyon techniques. The total pooled mean difference of both groups was 25.87 (95% CI 21.70-30.05)., Conclusion: None of the techniques analysed highlighted an absolute superiority. This study aimed to develop Fe-fortified instant Bose corn (IBC), a traditional Timorese food, as a strategy to address anemia among adolescent girls in Kupang, Indonesia. Instant corn and cowpea grits were made to shorten the preparation time with various times of soaking (IBC1=10 min; IBC2=15 min; IBC3=20 min) to select the best formula. The selected IBC was then fortified with NaFeEDTA·3H 2 O and nutrient content was evaluated. In the intervention study, a pre-post controlled trial was applied to 40 anemic adolescent girls aged 16∼19 years. Subjects with severe anemia (Hb=8.5∼10.4 g/dL) received the fortified selected IBC, whereas those with moderate anemia (Hb=10.5∼11.5 g/dL) received the unfortified selected IBC. A total of 100 g IBC were provided three times/week for 2 months. The hemoglobin and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) levels were measured at baseline and endline, respectively. IBC3 produced the highest acceptance level as compared to other formulas. The fortified IBC3 met 127.4% recommended dietary allowances for iron. Moreover, both fortified and unfortified IBC3 significantly increased the hemoglobin levels of adolescent girls with the higher improvement found in the group of fortified IBC3 (1.73±1.21 g/dL; P <0.05). However, the beneficial effects of the fortified IBC3 could not be observed on sTfR levels. Since the effect on Hb levels was significant with less effect, the intervention of IBC3 for only 2 months did not adequate to improve sTfR levels. This study aims to analyze the effect of Bilih fish bars (BFB) on oxidative stress based on the levels of MDA and SOD in diabetic rat models. This study used a Randomized Complete Design (RCD). Forty white male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain were placed into the following five groups: normal and diabetic rats that were fed either the standard feed and metformin, BFB, BFB, and metformin or BFF with a zinc dose of 0.54 mg. A single dose of STZ (40 mg/kg) was used to induce diabetes in the rats. The intervention lasted for 30 d. The differences in MDA and SOD levels between groups were determined with one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test, and the significance of the statistical level was set at p<0.05. The intervention with BFB and metformin, BFB, and BFF resulted in a decrease in blood glucose levels. The levels of MDA in rats that received the intervention with Bilih fish were 8.236±0.46 μmol/L for the BFB group and 8.266±0.66 μmol/L for the BFF group, which were both lower compared to the control normal rats (8.279±0.51 μmol/L). The levels of SOD in rats that received the intervention with BFB and BFF were higher compared to the diabetic rats with standard feed, but this increase was not significant (p>0.05). BFB and BFF lowered blood sugar levels and decreased the oxidative stress levels based on MDA levels in a diabetic rat model.
