We study the stability of the antiferromagnetic all-in--all-out state observed in dipolar-octupolar pyrochlores that have neodymium as the magnetic species. Different types of disorder are considered, either affecting the immediate environment of the Nd$^{3+}$ ion, or substituting it with a non-magnetic ion. Starting from the well studied Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ compound, Ti substitution on the Zr site and dilution on the Nd magnetic site with La substitution are investigated. The recently discovered entropy stabilized compound NdMox, which exhibits a high degree of disorder on the non magnetic site is also studied. Using a range of experimental techniques, especially very low-temperature magnetization and neutron scattering, we show that the all-in--all-out state is very robust and withstands substitutional disorder up to large rates. From these measurements, we estimate the Hamiltonian parameters and discuss their evolution in the framework of the phase diagram of dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore magnets., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures (main text: 12 pages, 13 figures)

Barium ruthenate Ba$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$, in which Ru$_{3}$O$_{12}$ trimers are connected together to form a chequered two-dimensional framework, has been synthesised and its structural, magnetic and transport properties studied between 300 K and 2 K. The paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N \sim 105$ K evidenced on the susceptibility curve coincides with an increase of electron localization in transport measurements. Thermoelectric power and Hall coefficient measurements both exhibit dramatic changes at $T_N$, characteristic of a reconstruction of the bands structure near the Fermi level. No pronounced structural changes are observed at TN in this compound. The magnetic scattering signal on the neutron powder diffraction patterns below $T_N$ is weak, but can be tentatively modelled with an antiferromagnetic ordering of the spins at both ends of a trimer, the spin of the more symmetric Ru site remaining idle. Crystal field and strong spin-orbit coupling at the Ru$^{4+}$ site seem to be the key parameters to understand the magnetic state of Ba$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$.

The complex magnetic structures, spin-reorientation and associated exchange interactions have been investigate in Er$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$FeO$_3$ using bulk magnetization, neutron diffraction, specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations. The Fe$^{3+}$ spins order as G-type antiferromagnet structure depicted by ${\Gamma}_{4}$($G_{x}$,$A_{y}$,$F_{z}$) irreducible representation below 700K, similar to its end compounds. The bulk magnetization data indicate occurrence of the spin-reorientation and rare-earth magnetic ordering below $\sim$75 K and 10 K, respectively. The neutron diffraction studies confirm an "incomplete" ${\Gamma}_{4}$${\rightarrow}$ ${\Gamma}_{2}$($F_{x}$,$C_{y}$,$G_{z}$) spin-reorientation initiated $\leq$75 K. Although, the relative volume fraction of the two magnetic structures varies with decreasing temperature, both co-exist even at 1.5 K. At 8 K, Er$^{3+}$/Dy$^{3+}$ moments order as $c_{y}^R$ arrangement develop, which gradually increases in intensity with decreasing temperature. At 2 K, magnetic structure associated with $c_{z}^R$ arrangement of Er$^{3+}$/Dy$^{3+}$ moments also appears. At 1.5 K the magnetic structure of Fe$^{3+}$ spins is represented by a combination of ${\Gamma}_{2}$+${\Gamma}_{4}$+${\Gamma}_{1}$, while the rare earth moments coexists as $c_{y}^R$ and $c_{z}^R$ corresponding to ${\Gamma}_{2}$ and ${\Gamma}_{1}$ representation, respectively. The observed Schottky anomaly at 2.5 K suggests that the "rare-earth ordering" is induced by polarization due to Fe$^{3+}$ spins. The Er$^{3+}$-Fe$^{3+}$ and Er$^{3+}$-Dy$^{3+}$ exchange interactions, obtained from first principle calculations, primarily cause the complicated spin-reorientation and $c_{y}^R$ rare-earth ordering, respectively, while the dipolar interactions between rare-earth moments, result in the $c_{z}^R$ type rare-earth ordering at 2 K., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Neutron diffraction and X-ray pair distribution function (XPDF) experiments were performed in order to investigate the magnetic and local crystal structures of Ba2FeSbSe5 and to compare them to the average (i.e. long-range) structural model, previously obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Changes in the local crystal structure (i.e. in the second coordination sphere) are observed upon cooling from 295 K to 95 K resulting in deviations from the average (i.e. long-range) crystal structure. This work demonstrates, that these observations cannot be explained by local or long-range magnetoelastic effects involving Fe-Fe correlations. Instead, we found, that the observed differences between local and average crystal structure can be explained by Sb-5s lone pair dynamics. We also find, that below the N\'eel temperature (TN = 58 K), the two distinct magnetic Fe3+ sites order collinearly, such that a combination of antiparallel and parallel spin arrangements along the b-axis results. The nearest-neighbor arrangement (J1 = 6 {\AA}) is fully antiferromagnetic, while next-nearest-neighbor interactions are ferromagnetic in nature.

Manipulation of magnetic ground states by effective control of competing magnetic interactions has led to the finding of many exotic magnetic states. In this direction, the tetragonal Heusler compounds consisting of multiple magnetic sublattices and crystal symmetry favoring chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provide an ideal base to realize non-trivial magnetic structures. Here, we present the observation of a large robust topological Hall effect (THE) in the multi-sublattice Mn$_{2-x}$PtIn Heusler magnets. The topological Hall resistivity, which originates from the non-vanishing real space Berry curvature in the presence of non-zero scalar spin chirality, systematically decreases with decreasing the magnitude of the canting angle of the magnetic moments at different sublattices. With help of first principle calculations, magnetic and neutron diffraction measurements, we establish that the presence of a tunable non-coplanar magnetic structure arising from the competing Heisenberg exchanges and chiral DMI from the D$_{2d}$ symmetry structure is responsible for the observed THE. The robustness of the THE with respect to the degree of non-collinearity adds up a new degree of freedom for designing THE based spintronic devices., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Heusler compounds having $\textit{D}$${}_{2d}$ crystal symmetry gained much attention recently due to the stabilization of a vortex-like spin texture called antiskyrmions in thin lamellae of Mn${}_{1.4}$Pt${}_{0.9}$Pd${}_{0.1}$Sn as reported in the work of Nayak $\textit{et al.}$ [Nature (London) 548, 561 (2017)]. Here we show that bulk Mn${}_{1.4}$Pt${}_{0.9}$Pd${}_{0.1}$Sn undergoes a spin-reorientation transition from a collinear ferromagnetic to a noncollinear configuration of Mn moments below 135 K, which is accompanied by the emergence of a topological Hall effect. We tune the topological Hall effect in Pd and Rh substituted Mn${}_{1.4}$PtSn Heusler compounds by changing the intrinsic magnetic properties and spin textures. A unique feature of the present system is the observation of a zero-field topological Hall resistivity with a sign change which indicates the robust formation of antiskyrmions.

In present study, the magnetic structure and spin reorientation of mixed doped orthoferrite Nd$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$FeO$_3$ have been investigated. Similar to both parent compounds (NdFeO$_3$ and DyFeO$_3$), the magnetic structure of Fe$^{3+}$ belongs to ${\Gamma}_{4}$ irreducible representation (G$_{x}$, F$_{z}$) at room temperature. The experimental measurements confirmed the spin reorientation where magnetic structure of Fe$^{3+}$ changes from ${\Gamma}_{4}$ to ${\Gamma}_{2}$(F$_{x}$, G$_{z}$) between 75 and 20 \,K while maintaining G-type configuration. Such a gradual spin reorientation is unusual since the large single ion anisotropy of Dy$^{3+}$ ions causes an abrupt ${\Gamma}_{4}$${\rightarrow}$ ${\Gamma}_{1}$(G$_{y}$) spin reorientation in DyFeO$_3$. Between 20 and 10 \,K, the Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic structure is represented by ${\Gamma}_{2}$ (F$_{x}$, G$_{z}$). Unexpectedly, magnetic structure of Fe$^{3+}$ with ${\Gamma}_{4}$ representation re-emerges below 10\,K which also coincides with the development of rare-earth (Nd$^{3+}$/Dy$^{3+}$) magnetic ordering having C$_{y}$ configuration with magnetic moment of 1.8 ${\mu}_{B}$. The absence of any signature of second order phase transition in the specific heat confirms the role of $R$(Nd$^{3+}$/Dy$^{3+}$)-Fe$^{3+}$ exchange interaction in the observed "rare-earth ordering" unlike DyFeO$_3$ where Dy$^{3+}$ ordering takes place independently to the magnetic ordering of Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic structure. Our (DFT+U+SO) calculations show that the C-type arrangement of rare-earth ions (Nd$^{3+}$/Dy$^{3+}$) with ${\Gamma}_{2}$ configuration for Fe$^{3+}$ moments is the ground state whereas ${\Gamma}_{4}$ phase is energetically very close. Nd-Fe and Nd-Dy exchange interactions, estimated from DFT, are observed to have significant roles in the rare earth ordering and Fe spin reorientation corroborating our experimental results., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

The topological Hall effect (THE) is one of the key signatures of topologically non-trivial magnetic spin textures, wherein electrons feel an additional transverse voltage to the applied current. The magnitude of THE is often small compared to the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we find a large THE of 0.9 $\mu\Omega$cm that is of the same order of the anomalous Hall effect in the single crystalline antiskyrmion hosting Heusler compound Mn$_{1.4}$PtSn, a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal compound. The THE is highly anisotropic and survives in the whole temperature range where the spin structure is noncoplanar (<170 K). The THE is zero above the spin reorientation transition temperature of 170 K, where the magnetization will have a collinear and ferromagnetic alignment. The large value of the THE entails a significant contribution from the momentum space Berry curvature along with real space Berry curvature, which has never been observed earlier.

Skyrmions, topologically stable spin textures, are of great interest for new generations of spintronic devices. In general, the stabilization of skyrmions has been achieved in systems with broken inversion symmetry, where the asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) modifies the uniform magnetic state to a swirling state. Depending on the crystal symmetries, two distinct types of skyrmions, Bloch and N\'eel types, have been observed experimentally. Here, we present, the experimental manifestation of a special type of spin-swirling, namely antiskyrmions, in a family of acentric tetragonal Heusler compounds with D2d crystal symmetry. A spiral magnetic ground-state, which propagates in the tetragonal basal plane, is transformed into a skyrmion lattice-state under magnetic fields applied along the tetragonal axis over a wide temperature interval. Direct imaging by Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy (LTEM) shows field stabilized antiskyrmion lattices and isolated antiskyrmions between 100 K and 400 K, and zero-field metastable antiskyrmions at low temperatures., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

The temperature evolution of the crystal and magnetic structures of ferroelectric sulfide AgCrS2 have been investigated by means of neutron scattering. AgCrS2 undergoes at TN = 41.6 K a first-order phase transition, from a paramagnetic rhombohedral R3m to an antiferromagnetic monoclinic structure with a polar Cm space group. In addition to being ferroelectric below TN, the low temperature phase of AgCrS2 exhibits an unconventional collinear magnetic structure that can be described as double ferromagnetic stripes coupled antiferromagnetically, with the magnetic moment of Cr+3 oriented along b within the anisotropic triangular plane. The magnetic couplings stabilizing this structure are discussed using inelastic neutron scattering results. Ferroelectricity below TN in AgCrS2 can possibly be explained in terms of atomic displacements at the magneto-elastic induced structural distortion. These results contrast with the behavior of the parent frustrated antiferromagnet and spin-driven ferroelectric AgCrO2.

The crystal and magnetic structures of the S = 3/2 chain antiferromagnet beta-CaCr2O4 have been investigated by means of specific heat, magnetization, muon relaxation and neutron powder diffraction between 300K and 1.5K. Owing to the original topology of the Cr3+ magnetic lattice, which can be described as a network of triangular ladders, equivalent to chains with nearest and next-nearest neighbors interactions, evolution of the magnetic scattering intensity in this compound evidences two magnetic regimes : for 21K < T < 270K, a low-dimensionality magnetic ordering of the Cr3+ spins is observed, simultaneously with a strong contraction of the ladder legs, parallel to c. Below TN = 21K, a complex antiferromagnetic ordering is evidenced, with an incommensurate propagation vector k = (0, 0, q) (q ~ 0.477 at 1.5K), as exchange interactions between ladders become significant. This complex magnetic ordering can be described as a honeycomb-like arrangement of cycloids, running along c, with staggered chiralities. The experimental observation of this staggered chirality can be understood by taking into account antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange terms., Comment: 9 figures
