Abstract

Data for the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) related to intravenous contrast administration in the pediatric trauma population are limited. Obtaining a creatinine value before elective CT scans is a relatively accepted standard of care. We sought to determine whether there was any significant difference in the incidence of AKI between severely injured patients who received IV contrast and those who did not. © 2018 IEEE. We present density functional theory simulations of novel heterostructures composed of TiO2 rutile and anatase modified with nanoclusters of Bi2 O3, Cr2 O3 and ZrO2. These heterostructures are shown to adsorb and activate CO 2 ; this is characterised by strong adsorption energies, a bending of the CO 2 molecule and elongation of C-O distances in the molecule.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Strenuous exercise provokes increases in circulating cortisol levels. When the peak cortisol response to exercise occurs is a point of contention, as some research suggests the peak response coincides with the end of exercise while other indicate it is delayed and occurs during recovery. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study examined when peak cortisol levels occur in response to intensive, exhausting exercise of a prolonged nature. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy male subjects ran on a treadmill until volitional exhaustion. Blood specimens were analyzed for cortisol levels immediately at the end of exercise and at 30, 60, and 90 minutes into recovery. RESULTS: A significantly greater number (25/34; i.e., 73.5%) of the peak cortisol responses occurred during the recovery period (at 30 – 90 minutes) after the subjects reached volitional exhaustion and had stopped exercising. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that if researchers are interested in assessing the peak cortisol response to exhausting exercise they should continue blood sampling for approximately 1 hour into the recovery period.

30. The reliability impact of mission abort strategies on redundant flight computer systems

Abstract

This correspondence presents a reliability model for a redundant flight computer system with standby sparing, taking into account various mission abort strategies. A mission rule to initiate a mission abort after a predetermined number of detected computer failures and to return to earth with the remaining computers is shown to result in: (1) little improvement of crew safety unless computer error coverage is nearly perfect, and (2) significant degradation in mission success whenever coverage is high.

Abstract

Aim To explore GPs' attitudes to nurse-led initiatives in the care of children with asthma. Methods A questionnaire was posted to 541 GPs in the study area, of whom 236 (43.6 per cent) responded. The data were analysed quantitatively. Results Of the 236 responders, 90 per cent did provide nurse-led services, 89 per cent believed that patients benefited from these, 84 per cent would consider referral to a nurse-led asthma clinic at the regional children's hospital and 79 per cent would refer to a satellite paediatric nurse-led clinic. Conclusion GPs believe children's nurse-led asthma services benefit the GP's surgery, the regional children's hospital and the primary care trust. Abstract

2300 Optiflo II and 80 Sci-Med blood oxygenator cardiopulmonary operative records were studied to define the semilogarithmic relationship between the PaO2and the gas-to-blood flow ratio or the percent FIO2respectively. A mathematical model was developed to consider the linear effects of oxygenator blood residence time, temperature, hematocrit and the continuously monitored venous inlet % O2saturation of hemoglobin on the slope and Y -intercept of the device semilog PaO2function curve.
