6. Asymmetry Measurements for Neutral Pion and Positive Pion Photoproduction by Linearly Polarized Gamma Rays in the Energy Range 400-900 MeV

Abstract

The asymmetry ratio A = sigma normal - sigma parallel/sigma normal + sigma parallel has been measured using linearly polarized gamma-rays for neutral pion photoproduction. For the reaction gamma + P yields n + Positive pion, measurements were taken for theta sub cm = 135 degrees at gamma-ray energies ranging from 390 to 909 MeV. For the reaction gamma + P yields P + neutral pion, measurements were taken for theta sub cm = 60 degrees and 90 degrees at gamma-ray energies ranging from 426 to 918 MeV. Abstract

Measurements of the ratio of the deuteron-to-proton electric form factors, G(E) sub d/G(E) sub p, were made from elastic electron-deuteron scattering to a precision of approximately 1% for the range of momentum transfers, 0.10 < or = q squared < or = 0.8 f super(-2), and for electron scattering angles of 45 degrees and 120 degrees. It was found that within experimental errors the slope as obtained from the ratio G(E) sub n/G(E) sub p agrees with the extrapolated thermal neutron-electron interaction slope when relativistic corrections and Feshbach-Lomon deuteron wave functions are applied to the electron-deuteron scattering results. The deuteron radius was found to be 1.95 plus or minus 0.02 f, which agrees with the radius predicted by the Feshbach-Lomon calculation. Cross sections of elastic and inelastic electron scattering at incident electron energies of 250 and 400 MeV are presented. Abstract

The nucleus of N15 was investigated by the electron scattering technique at incident energies of 250 and 400 MeV. The first diffraction minimum was observed and measured. The data were analyzed by using two nuclear charge density distributions; the Fermi model and the shell model. A value for the radius and skin thickness of the N15 nucleus is given although the data do not fit the diffraction minimum. (Author)

Abstract

The leakage radiation characteristics of a dedicated intraoperative radiotherapy linear accelerator have been measured on a machine designed to minimize the shielding required to allow it to be placed in an operating room suite. The scattering foil design was optimized to produce a flat beam for the field sizes employed while generating minimal bremsstrahlung contamination over the available energy range. More lead shielding was used in the treatment head than is used in conventional accelerators. A small amount of borated polyethylene shielding was also employed since neutron production was present at measurable levels. The room shielding installed in the operating room was demonstrated to be adequate to treat at least 20 patients each month to an average dose of 20 Gy. The worst case exposure was found to be 73% maximum permissible exposure. Administrative control was required for adjoining areas when calibrations and maintenance were performed.
