6. Modelling of Multiphase Flow During Transient Operation of a Carbon Capture and Storage System

Abstract

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) holds a critical role in securing our net-zero future and significant growth is required in the industry to meet these demands. Typically, CO2 fluid transportation takes place in the dense or supercritical phase before the compressed CO2 is sequestered in a geologic reservoir. However, the CO2 mixture may move across the phase boundary during transient operating scenarios due to the narrow operating envelope. The presence of impurities significantly increases the risk of multiphase flow with implications on the cost of processing, transport, storage and moreover additional challenges to the design, safe operation, and integrity of the system. Wellbore integrity and risks associated with phase split and multiphase flow is one of the major concerns for CCUS system operation. This paper discusses the setup of a real time Integrated Asset Model (IAM) using a specialized thermodynamic model for Carbon Dioxide (CO2) rich fluid coupled with a sophisticated thermo-hydraulic model for accurate automated forecasts of the CO2 fluid phase behavior and no touch time for liquid dropout (water and liquid CO2) in the transport system including the wellbores and a simplified multi-tank reservoir model for the injection wells. The IAM simulation results have been benchmarked against field operation data. Two specific use cases are demonstrated in this paper. Firstly, simulation of a well depressurisation was carried out using the IAM in an offline mode to assess the impacts of phase split during a procedural transient operation (leak-off valve testing). Secondly, a sensitivity on the reservoir pressure was assessed to determine if there will be a consequent "stiff response" / significant system pressure change and a risk of multiphase flow due to the subsurface uncertainty. The field proven real-time IAM model is shown to provide robust and reliable simulation with speed and is demonstrated to be a novel and valuable tool for CCUS operation planning and optimization.

8. Online Modeling of CO2 Storage Systems

Abstract

This paper discusses the development and deployment of a specialized online and offline integrated model to simulate the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Injection process. There is a very high level of CO2 in an LNG development and the CO2 must be removed in order to prepare the gas to be processed into LNG. To mitigate the global warming effects of this CO2, a large portion of the CO2 Rich Stream (98% purity) is injected back into a depleted oil field. To reduce costs, carbon steel flowlines are used but this introduces a risk of internal corrosion. The presence of free water increases the internal corrosion risk, and for this reason, a predictive model discussed in this paper is designed to help operations prevent free water dropout in the network in real time. A flow management tool (FMT) is used to monitor the current state of the system and helps look at the impact of future events (startup, shutdowns etc.). The tool models the flow of the CO2 rich stream from the outlet of the compressor trains, through the network pipeline and manifolds and then into the injection wells. System behavior during steady state and transient operation is captured and analyzed to check water content and the balance of trace chemicals along with temperature and pressure throughout the network helping operators estimate corrosion rates and monitor the overall integrity of the system. The system has been running online for 24/7 for 2 years. The model has been able to match events like startup/shutdown, cooldowns and blowdowns. During these events the prediction of temperature/pressure at several locations in the field matches measured data. The model is then able to forecasts events into the future to help operations plan how they will operate the field. The tool uses a specialized thermodynamic model to predict the dropout of water in the near critical region of CO2 mixtures which includes various impurities. The model is designed to model startup and shutdown as the CO2 mixture moves across the phase boundary from liquid to gas or gas to liquid during these operations.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide educators with information about mathematics anxiety. The focus is on characteristics, causes, and possible solutions for victims of this disorder. The first section of the paper provides a statement of the problem defines the purpose, organization, and limitations of the study, and includes a glossary. The second section presents an annotated bibliography, divided into three parts: (1) what is math anxiety (definition, characteristics, causes, and symptoms); (2) who experiences the effects of math anxiety (results and significant factors); and (3) are there solutions to the problem (reduction and elimination of math anxiety). In the third section, these studies and other papers are summarized, conclusions are drawn, and 11 recommendations are listed, directed for the most part toward teachers and other educators. A 36-item bibliography is included. (MNS)

This thesis addresses the benefits that the employees of the Naval Avionics Center (NAC) believe they are receiving from management training. Specifically, this study determines whether or not the management training that is offered to NAC scientists and engineers is perceived as beneficial. In order to determine the perceptions of the trainees, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to all eligible employees. Fifty-nine percent of the participants responded. The results of the research indicated that the trainees generally had positive responses to all of the survey questions. Based on those results, it is concluded that the scientists and engineers do perceive the training that they are receiving as beneficial.
