Precision agriculture integrates multiple sensors and data types to support farmers with informed decision-making tools throughout crop cycles. This study evaluated Aboveground Biomass (AGB) estimates of Rye using attributes derived from PlanetScope (PS) optical, Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), and hybrid (optical plus SAR) datasets. Optical attributes encompassed surface reflectance from PS's blue, green, red, and near-infrared (NIR) bands, alongside the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). Sentinel-1 SAR attributes included the C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar Ground Range Detected, VV and HH polarizations, and both Ratio and Polarization (Pol) indices. Ground reference AGB data for Rye (Secale cereal L.) were collected from 50 samples and four dates at a farm located in southern Brazil, aligning with image acquisition dates. Multiple linear regression models were trained and validated. AGB was estimated based on individual (optical PS or Sentinel-1 SAR) and combined datasets (optical plus SAR). This process was repeated 100 times, and variable importance was extracted. Results revealed improved Rye AGB estimates with integrated optical and SAR data. Optical vegetation indices displayed higher correlation coefficients (r) for AGB estimation (r = +0.67 for both EVI and NDVI) compared to SAR attributes like VV, Ratio, and polarization (r ranging from −0.52 to −0.58). However, the hybrid regression model enhanced AGB estimation (R2 = 0.62, p < 0.01), reducing RMSE to 579 kg·ha−1. Using only optical or SAR data yielded R2 values of 0.51 and 0.42, respectively (p < 0.01). In the hybrid model, the most important predictors were VV, NIR, blue, and EVI. Spatial distribution analysis of predicted Rye AGB unveiled agricultural zones associated with varying biomass throughout the cover crop development. Our findings underscored the complementarity of optical with SAR data to enhance AGB estimates of cover crops, offering valuable insights for agricultural zoning to support soil and cash crop management. Gaps are openings within tropical forest canopies created by natural or anthropogenic disturbances. Important aspects of gap dynamics that are not well understood include how gaps close over time and their potential for contagiousness, indicating whether the presence of gaps may or may not induce the creation of new gaps. This is especially important when we consider disturbances from selective logging activities in rainforests, which take away large trees of high commercial value and leave behind a forest full of gaps. The goal of this study was to quantify and understand how gaps open and close over time within tropical rainforests using a time series of airborne LiDAR data, attributing observed processes to gap types and origins. For this purpose, the Jamari National Forest located in the Brazilian Amazon was chosen as the study area because of the unique availability of multi-temporal small-footprint airborne LiDAR data covering the time period of 2011–2017 with five data acquisitions, alongside the geolocation of trees that were felled by selective logging activities. We found an increased likelihood of natural new gaps opening closer to pre-existing gaps associated with felled tree locations (<20 m distance) rather than farther away from them, suggesting that small-scale disturbances caused by logging, even at a low intensity, may cause a legacy effect of increased mortality over six years after logging due to gap contagiousness. Moreover, gaps were closed at similar annual rates by vertical and lateral ingrowth (16.7% yr−1) and about 90% of the original gap area was closed at six years post-disturbance. Therefore, the relative contribution of lateral and vertical growth for gap closure was similar when consolidated over time. We highlight that aboveground biomass or carbon density of logged forests can be overestimated if considering only top of the canopy height metrics due to fast lateral ingrowth of neighboring trees, especially in the first two years of regeneration where 26% of gaps were closed solely by lateral ingrowth, which would not translate to 26% of regeneration of forest biomass. Trees inside gaps grew 2.2 times faster (1.5 m yr−1) than trees at the surrounding non-gap canopy (0.7 m yr−1). Our study brings new insights into the processes of both the opening and closure of forest gaps within tropical forests and the importance of considering gap types and origins in this analysis. The Land Use Change Alert (LUCA) dataset was developed for effective and timely monitoring of global forest changes that are mostly associated with human activities. Near- real-time changes of forest land use are mapped at 0.05 ha minimum mapping unit for all forest types across the Earth's ecoregions, every two weeks. LUCA is based on Sentinel-1 cloud penetrating synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations to circumvent limitations of optical imagery from pervasive cloud cover over forested areas globally, and especially in the tropics. The methodology is based on a combination of time-series change detection and machine learning analytics to achieve high accuracy of alerts across all ecoregions and landscapes globally with an average area-adjusted users and producers accuracy of 83% and 63%, respectively. The bi-weekly global alert maps capture forest clearing associated with deforestation and industrial timber harvesting, along with forest degradation associated with selective logging, fragmentation, fire, and roads. The product was developed and released publicly through Google Earth Engine to allow for the rapid assessment of land use change activities, quantifying patterns and processes driving forest change and dynamics across forest ecoregions. LUCA is designed to help monitor a variety of emission reduction programs at the local to regional scales and play a key role in implementing regulations on deforestation-free products. California forests have recently experienced record breaking wildfires and tree mortality from droughts, However, there is inadequate monitoring, and limited data to inform policies and management strategies across the state. Although forest surveys and satellite observations of forest cover changes exist at medium to coarse resolutions (30-500 m) annually, they remain less effective in mapping small disturbances of forest patches (<5m) occurring multiple times a year. We introduce a novel method of tracking California forest cover using a supervised U-Net deep learning architecture and PlanetScope's Visual dataset which provides 3-band RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) mosaicked imagery. We created labels of forest and non-forest to train the U-Net model to map tree cover based on a semi-unsupervised classification method. We then detected changes of tree cover and disturbance with the U-Net model, achieving an overall accuracy of 98.97% over training data set, and 95.5% over an independent validation dataset, obtaining a precision of 82%, and a recall of 74%. With the predicted tree cover mask, we created wall to wall monthly tree cover maps over California at 4.77 m resolution for 2020, 2021, and 2022. These maps were then aggregated in a postprocessing step to develop annual maps of disturbance, while accounting for the time of disturbance and other confounding factors such as topography, phenological and snow cover variability. We compared our high-resolution disturbance maps with wildfire GIS survey data from CALFIRE, and satellitebased forest cover changes and achieved an F-1 score of 54% and 88% respectively. The results suggest that high-resolution maps capture variability of forest disturbance and fire that wildfire surveys and medium resolution satellite products cannot. From 2020 to 2021, California maintained 30,923.5 sq km of forest while 5,994.9 sq km were disturbed. The highest observed forest loss rate was located at the Sierra Nevada mountains at 21.4% of the forested area being disturbed between 2020 and 2021. Our findings highlight the strong potential of deep learning and high-resolution RGB optical imagery for mapping complex forest ecosystems and their changes across California, as well as the application of these techniques on a national to global scale. Blowdown events are a major natural disturbance in the central Amazon Forest, but their impact and subsequent vegetation recovery have been poorly understood. This study aimed to track post-disturbance regeneration after blowdown events in the Amazon Forest. We analyzed 45 blowdown sites identified after September 2020 at Amazonas, Mato Grosso, and Colombia jurisdictions using Landsat-8 and PlanetScope NICFI satellite imagery. Non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), green vegetation (GV), and shade fractions were calculated for each image and sensor using spectral mixture analysis in Google Earth Engine. The results showed that PlanetScope NICFI data provided more regular and higher-spatial-resolution observations of blowdown areas than Landsat-8, allowing for more accurate characterization of post-disturbance vegetation recovery. Specifically, NICFI data indicated that just four months after the blowdown event, nearly half of ΔNPV, which represents the difference between the NPV after blowdown and the NPV before blowdown, had disappeared. ΔNPV and GV values recovered to pre-blowdown levels after approximately 15 months of regeneration. Our findings highlight that the precise timing of blowdown detection has huge implications on quantification of the magnitude of damage. Landsat data may miss important changes in signal due to the difficulty of obtaining regular monthly observations. Land management and deforestation in tropical regions cause wildfires and forest degradation, leading to a loss of ecosystem services and global climate regulation. The objective of the study was to provide a comprehensive assessment of the spatial extent and patterns of burned areas in a new deforestation frontier in the Amazonas state. The methodology applied cross-referenced burned area data from 2003 to 2019 with climate, land cover, private properties and Protected Areas information and performed a series of statistical tests. The influence of the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) contributed to a decreasing rainfall anomalies trend and increasing temperature anomalies trend. This process intensified the dry season and increased the extent of annual natural vegetation affected by fires, reaching a peak of 681 km2 in 2019. The results showed that the increased deforestation trend occurred mostly in public lands, mainly after the new forest code, leading to an increase in fires from 66 to 84% in 2019. The methods developed here could identify fire extent, trends, and relationship with land cover change and climate, thus pointing to priority areas for preservation.
