Abstract

A two-component grout consists of a superfluid grout and accelerator with a retarding agent added to slow down gelling. Mixtures of varying proportions of water/bentonite/cement with retardants and accelerators have been used in metro tunnels in Rome and Brescia (Italy), Prague (Czech Republic), Warsaw (Poland), and Singapore; in a sewer tunnel in Auckland (New Zealand); in road tunnels in Brisbane (Australia) and Bologna-Firenze (Italy); and in hydraulic tunnels in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Abu Dhabi. These case studies showed that the mixtures were suitable for use in applications ranging from soils (sand and clay) to hard rock, both above and beyond the water table. The grout completely filled the voids required and also penetrated the surrounding soil. Laboratory tests of the fresh (unhardened) two-component mix showed it could be easily and safely used in EPB tunnelling. Studies of the effects of curing conditions on the strength of the hardened mix showed that there is no significant reduction of strength when the samples are in a confined space and maintained in a dry condition., A two-component grout consists of a superfluid grout and accelerator with a retarding agent added to slow down gelling.
