Search

A system that possesses translational symmetry but breaks orientational symmetry is known as a nematic phase. While there are many examples of nematic phases in a wide range of contexts, such as in liquid crystals, complex oxides, and superconductors, of particular interest is the magnetic analogue, where the spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom of the electron are intertwined. The difficulty of spin nematics is the unambiguous realization and characterization of the phase. Here we present an entirely new type of magnetic nematic phase, which replaces the basis of individual spins with magnetic helices. The helical basis allows for the direct measurement of the order parameters with soft X-ray scattering and a thorough characterization of the nematic phase and its thermodynamic transitions. We discover two distinct nematic phases with unique spatio-temporal correlation signatures. Using coherent X-ray methods, we find that near the phase boundary between the two nematic phases, fluctuations coexist on the timescale of both seconds and sub-nanoseconds. Additionally, we have determined that the fluctuations occur simultaneously with a reorientation of the magnetic helices, indicating that there is spontaneous symmetry breaking and new degrees of freedom become available. Our results provide a novel framework for characterizing exotic phases and the phenomena presented can be mapped onto a broad class of physical systems.

We report on experiments where solid-density Mg plasmas are created by heating with the focused output of the Linac Coherent Light Source x-ray free-electron-laser. We study the K-shell emission from the Helium and Lithium-like ions using Bragg crystal spectroscopy. Observation of the dielectronic satellites in Lithium-like ions confirms that the M-shell electrons appear bound for these high charge states. An analysis of the intensity of these satellites indicates that when modelled with an atomic-kinetics code, the ionisation potential depression model employed needs to produce depressions for these ions which lie between those predicted by the well known Stewart-Pyatt and Ecker-Kroll models. These results are largely consistent with recent Density Functional Theory calculations.

Investigations of magnetically ordered phases on the femtosecond timescale have provided significant insights into the influence of charge and lattice degrees of freedom on the magnetic sub-system. However, short-range magnetic correlations occurring in the absence of long-range order, for example in spin-frustrated systems, are inaccessible to many ultrafast techniques. Here, we show how time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (trRIXS) is capable of probing such short-ranged magnetic dynamics in a charge-transfer insulator through the detection of a Zhang-Rice singlet exciton. Utilizing trRIXS measurements at the O K-edge, and in combination with model calculations, we probe the short-range spin-correlations in the frustrated spin chain material CuGeO3 following photo-excitation, revealing a strong coupling between the local lattice and spin sub-systems.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful and well established technique with sensitivity to elemental and chemical composition. Despite these advantages, its implementation has not kept pace with the development of ultrafast pulsed x-ray sources where XAS can capture femtosecond chemical processes. X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) deliver femtosecond, narrow bandwidth ($\frac{\Delta E}{E} < 0.5\%$) pulses containing $\sim 10^{10}$ photons. However, the energy contained in each pulse fluctuates thus complicating pulse by pulse efforts to quantify the number of photons. Improvements in counting the photons in each pulse have defined the state of the art for XAS sensitivity. Here we demonstrate a final step in these improvements through a balanced detection method that approaches the photon counting shot noise limit. In doing so, we obtain high quality absorption spectra from the insulator-metal transition in VO$_2$ and unlock a method to explore dilute systems, subtle processes and nonlinear phenomena with ultrafast x-rays. The method is especially beneficial for x-ray light sources where integration and averaging are not viable options to improve sensitivity.

Ultrashort x-ray pulses can be used to disentangle magnetic and structural dynamics and are accordingly utilized here to study the photoexcitation of NdNiO$_3$ (NNO), a model nickelate exhibiting structural and magnetic dynamics that conspire to induce an IMT. During the course of the photoinduced insulator to metal transition (IMT) with above gap excitation, we observe an ultrafast ($<$ 180 fs) quenching of magnetic order followed by a time delayed collapse of the insulating phase probed by X-ray absorption and THz transmission (~ 450 fs) that correlates with the slowest optical phonon mode involved in the structural transition. A simultaneous order-disorder response at the Ni site and displacive response at the Nd site coexist in the ultrafast magnetic response. Crucially, we observe the optical phonon through its coherent coupling with Nd magnetic order, demonstrating that the magnetic and structural degrees of freedom both contribute in driving the IMT. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a consistent scenario where optically driven inter-site charge transfer (ICT) drives a collapse of antiferromagnetic order that in turn destabilizes the charge-ordered phase resulting in an IMT. Superconductivity and charge density waves (CDW) are competitive, yet coexisting orders in cuprate superconductors. To understand their microscopic interdependence, a probe capable of discerning their interaction on its natural length and time scales is necessary. We use ultrafast resonant soft x-ray scattering to track the transient evolution of CDW correlations in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ following the quench of superconductivity by an infrared laser pulse. We observe a non-thermal response of the CDW order characterized by a near doubling of the correlation length within $\approx$ 1 picosecond of the superconducting quench. Our results are consistent with a model in which the interaction between superconductivity and CDW manifests inhomogeneously through disruption of spatial coherence, with superconductivity playing the dominant role in stabilizing CDW topological defects, such as discommensurations., Comment: Accepted version. 34 pages, 11 figures, Main text and Supplementary Materials

In the mixed-valence manganites, a near-infrared laser typically melts the orbital and spin order simultaneously, corresponding to the photoinduced $d^{1}d^{0}$ $\xrightarrow{}$ $d^{0}d^{1}$ excitations in the Mott-Hubbard bands of manganese. Here, we use ultrafast methods -- both femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction and optical reflectivity -- to demonstrate that the orbital response in the layered manganite Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{1+x}$MnO$_{4}$ ($\it{x}$ = 2/3) does not follow this scheme. At the photoexcitation saturation fluence, the orbital order is only diminished by a few percent in the transient state. Instead of the typical $d^{1}d^{0}$ $\xrightarrow{}$ $d^{0}d^{1}$ transition, a near-infrared pump in this compound promotes a fundamentally distinct mechanism of charge transfer, the $d^{0}$ $ \xrightarrow{}$ $d^{1}L$, where $\it{L}$ denotes a hole in the oxygen band. This novel finding may pave a new avenue for selectively manipulating specific types of order in complex materials of this class.

Sub-picosecond magnetisation manipulation via femtosecond optical pumping has attracted wide attention ever since its original discovery in 1996. However, the spatial evolution of the magnetisation is not yet well understood, in part due to the difficulty in experimentally probing such rapid dynamics. Here, we find evidence of rapid magnetic order recovery in materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy via nonlinear magnon processes. We identify both localisation and coalescence regimes, whereby localised magnetic textures nucleate and subsequently evolve in accordance with a power law formalism. Coalescence is observed for optical excitations both above and below the switching threshold. Simulations indicate that the ultrafast generation of noncollinear magnetisation via optical pumping establishes exchange-mediated spin currents with an equivalent 100% spin polarised charge current density of $10^8$ A/cm$^2$. Such large spin currents precipitate rapid recovery of magnetic order after optical pumping. These processes suggest an ultrafast optical route for the stabilization of desired meta-stable states, e.g., isolated skyrmions.

Silicon drift detectors (SDDs) revolutionized spectroscopy in fields as diverse as geology and dentistry. For a subset of experiments at ultra-fast, x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs), SDDs can make substantial contributions. Often the unknown spectrum is interesting, carrying science data, or the background measurement is useful to identify unexpected signals. Many measurements involve only several discrete photon energies known a priori, allowing single event decomposition of pile-up and spectroscopic photon counting. We designed a pulse function and demonstrated that the signal amplitude and rise time are obtained for each pulse by fitting, thus removing the need for pulse shaping. By avoiding pulse shaping, rise times of tens of nanoseconds resulted in reduced pulse pile-up and allowed decomposition of remaining pulse pile-up at photon separation times down to hundreds of nanoseconds while yielding time-of-arrival information with precision of 10 nanoseconds. Waveform fitting yields simultaneously high energy resolution and high counting rates (2 orders of magnitude higher than current digital pulse processors). We showed that pile-up spectrum fitting is relatively simple and preferable to pile-up spectrum deconvolution. We developed a photon pile-up statistical model for constant intensity sources, extended it to variable intensity sources (typical for FELs) and used it to fit a complex pile-up spectrum. We subsequently developed a Bayesian pile-up decomposition method that allows decomposing pile-up of single events with up to 6 photons from 6 monochromatic lines with 99% accuracy. The usefulness of SDDs will continue into the x-ray FEL era of science. Resonant optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrational modes in the normal state of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x induces a transient state with optical properties similar to those of the equilibrium superconducting state. Amongst these, a divergent imaginary conductivity and a plasma edge are transiently observed in the photo-stimulated state. Femtosecond hard x-ray diffraction experiments have been used in the past to identify the transient crystal structure in this non-equilibrium state. Here, we start from these crystallographic features and theoretically predict the corresponding electronic rearrangements that accompany these structural deformations. Using density functional theory, we predict enhanced hole-doping of the CuO2 planes. The empty chain Cu dy2-z2 orbital is calculated to strongly reduce in energy, which would increase c-axis transport and potentially enhance the interlayer Josephson coupling as observed in the THz-frequency response. From these calculations, we predict changes in the soft x-ray absorption spectra at the Cu L-edge. Femtosecond x-ray pulses from a free electron laser are used to probe these changes in absorption at two photon energies along this spectrum, and provide data consistent with these predictions., Comment: 20 pages with 6 figures

We performed ultrafast time-resolved near-infrared pump, resonant soft X-ray diffraction probe measurements to investigate the coupling between the photoexcited electronic system and the spin cycloid magnetic order in multiferroic TbMnO3 at low temperatures. We observe melting of the long range antiferromagnetic order at low excitation fluences with a decay time constant of 22.3 +- 1.1 ps, which is much slower than the ~1 ps melting times previously observed in other systems. To explain the data we propose a simple model of the melting process where the pump laser pulse directly excites the electronic system, which then leads to an increase in the effective temperature of the spin system via a slower relaxation mechanism. Despite this apparent increase in the effective spin temperature, we do not observe changes in the wavevector q of the antiferromagnetic spin order that would typically correlate with an increase in temperature under equilibrium conditions. We suggest that this behavior results from the extremely low magnon group velocity that hinders a change in the spin-spiral wavevector on these time scales., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Static strain in complex oxide heterostructures has been extensively used to engineer electronic and magnetic properties at equilibrium. In the same spirit, deformations of the crystal lattice with light may be used to achieve functional control across hetero-interfaces dynamically. Here, by exciting large amplitude infrared-active vibrations in a LaAlO3 substrate we induce magnetic order melting in a NdNiO3 film across a hetero-interface. Femtosecond Resonant Soft X-ray Diffraction is used to determine the spatial and temporal evolution of the magnetic disordering. We observe a magnetic melt front that grows from the substrate interface into the film, at a speed that suggests electronically driven propagation. Light control and ultrafast phase front propagation at hetero-interfaces may lead to new opportunities in optomagnetism, for example by driving domain wall motion to transport information across suitably designed devices., Comment: 35 pages, 8 Figures (both incl. We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray diffraction to measure the optically stimulated ultrafast changes of charge density wave correlations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6. We find that when coherent interlayer transport is enhanced by optical excitation of the apical oxygen distortions, at least 50% of the in-plane charge density wave order is melted. These results indicate that charge ordering and superconductivity may be competing up to the charge ordering transition temperature, with the latter becoming a hidden phase that is accessible only by nonlinear phonon excitation., Comment: 22 pages (including Supplement), 3 figures

Ultrafast light pulses can modify the electronic properties of quantum materials by perturbing the underlying, intertwined degrees of freedom. In particular, iron-based superconductors exhibit a strong coupling among electronic nematic fluctuations, spins, and the lattice, serving as a playground for ultrafast manipulation. Here we use time-resolved x-ray scattering to measure the lattice dynamics of photo-excited BaFe2As2. Upon optical excitation, no signature of an ultrafast change of the crystal symmetry is observed, but the lattice oscillates rapidly in time due to the coherent excitation of an A1g mode that modulates the Fe-As-Fe bond angle. We directly quantify the coherent lattice dynamics and show that even a small photo-induced lattice distortion can induce notable changes in the electronic and magnetic properties. Our analysis implies that transient structural modification can generally be an effective tool for manipulating the electronic properties of multi-orbital systems, where electronic instabilities are sensitive to the orbital character of bands near the Fermi level.
