Summary: The genetic mechanisms of reproductive isolation have been widely investigated within Asian cultivated rice (Oryza sativa); however, relevant genes between diverged species have been in sighted rather less. Herein, a gene showing selfish behavior was discovered in hybrids between the distantly related rice species Oryza longistaminata and O. sativa. The selfish allele S13l in the S13 locus impaired male fertility, discriminately eliminating pollens containing the allele S13s from O. sativa in heterozygotes (S13s/S13l). Genetic analysis revealed that a gene encoding a chromatin-remodeling factor (CHR) is involved in this phenomenon and a variety of O. sativa owns the truncated gene OsCHR745, whereas its homologue OlCHR has a complete structure in O. longistaminata. CRISPR-Cas9-mediated loss of function mutants restored fertility in hybrids. African cultivated rice, which naturally lacks the OlCHR homologue, is compatible with both S13s and S13l carriers. These results suggest that OlCHR is a Killer gene, which leads to reproductive isolation.

Abstract Deep learning techniques for automatically detecting teeth in dental X-rays have gained popularity, providing valuable assistance to healthcare professionals. However, teeth detection in X-ray images is often hindered by alterations in tooth appearance caused by dental prostheses. To address this challenge, our paper proposes a novel method for teeth detection and numbering in dental panoramic X-rays, leveraging two separate CNN-based object detectors, namely YOLOv7, for detecting teeth and prostheses, alongside an optimization algorithm to refine the outcomes. The study utilizes a dataset of 3138 radiographs, of which 2553 images contain prostheses, to build a robust model. The tooth and prosthesis detection algorithms perform excellently, achieving mean average precisions of 0.982 and 0.983, respectively. Additionally, the trained tooth detection model is verified using an external dataset, and six-fold cross-validation is conducted to demonstrate the proposed method’s feasibility and robustness. Moreover, the investigation of performance improvement resulting from the inclusion of prosthesis information in the teeth detection process reveals a marginal increase in the average F1-score, rising from 0.985 to 0.987 compared to the sole teeth detection method. The proposed method is unique in its approach to numbering teeth as it incorporates prosthesis information and considers complete restorations such as dental implants and dentures of fixed bridges during the teeth enumeration process, which follows the universal tooth numbering system. These advancements hold promise for automating dental charting processes.

Abstract Background Congenital heart disease occurs in approximately 1 in 100 cases. Although sibling occurrence is high (3–9%), the causative genes for this disease are still being elucidated. PLD1 (Phospholipase D1) is a recently discovered gene; however, few case reports have been published on it. In this report, we describe a case of triplicate fetal congenital heart disease that was diagnosed as a PDL1 mutation. Our objective is to explore the clinical manifestations of PLD1 mutations in this particular case. Case presentation A 32-year-old Japanese woman (gravida, para 0) was introduced since fetus four chamber view was not clear and was diagnosed with ductus arteriosus-dependent left ventricular single ventricle and pulmonary atresia at 21 weeks and 1 day of gestation during her first pregnancy. Artificial abortion using Gemeprost was performed at 21 weeks and 5 days of gestation. The second pregnancy was diagnosed as pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum with cardiomegaly, a cardiothoracic area ratio of more than 35%, and a circulatory shunt at 13 weeks and 3 days of gestation. Subsequently, intrauterine fetal death was confirmed at 14 weeks and 3 days of gestation. Regarding the third pregnancy, fetal ultrasonography at 11 weeks and 5 days of gestation showed mild fetal hydrops and moderate tricuspid valve regurgitation. At 16 weeks and 5 days of gestation, the fetus was suspected to have a left ventricular-type single ventricle, trace right ventricle, pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, or cardiomyopathy. Cardiac function gradually declined at 26 weeks of gestation, and intrauterine fetal death was confirmed at 27 weeks and 5 days of gestation. The fourth pregnancy resulted in a normal heart with good progression and no abnormal baby. We submitted the first and second fetuses’ umbilical cord, third fetus’ placenta, and the fourth fetus’ blood to genetic testing using whole exome analysis with next generation sequencing. Genetic analysis identified hemizygous PLD1 mutations in the first, second, and third fetuses. The fourth fetus was heterozygous. In addition, the parents were heterozygous for PLD1. This case is based on three consecutive cases of homozygosity for the PLD1 gene in the sibling cases and the fetuses with recurrent right ventricular valve dysplasia. This will elucidate the cause of recurrent congenital heart disease and intrauterine fetal death and may serve as an indicator for screening the next fetus. To date, homozygous mutations in PLD1 that repeat three times in a row are not reported, only up to two times. The novelty of this report is that it was repeated three times, followed by a heterozygous live birth. Conclusions This report is consistent with previous reports that mutations in PLD1 cause right ventricular valve dysplasia. However, there have been few case reports of PLD1 mutations, and we hope that this report will contribute to elucidate the causes of congenital heart disease, especially right ventricular valve dysplasia, and that the accumulation of such information will provide more detailed information on PLD1 mutations in heart disease.

ABSTRACTThe response of cells to environmental stimuli, under either physiological or pathological conditions, plays a key role in determining cell fate toward either adaptive survival or controlled death. The efficiency of such a feedback mechanism is closely related to the most challenging human diseases, including cancer. Since cellular responses are implemented through physical forces exerted on intracellular components, more detailed knowledge of force distribution through modern imaging techniques is needed to ensure a mechanistic understanding of these forces. In this work, we mapped these intracellular forces at a whole-cell scale and with submicron resolution to correlate intracellular force distribution to the cytoskeletal structures. Furthermore, we visualized dynamic mechanical responses of the cells adapting to environmental modulations in situ. Such task was achieved by using an informatics-assisted atomic force microscope (AFM) indentation technique where a key step was Markov-chain Monte Carlo optimization to search for both the models used to fit indentation force–displacement curves and probe geometry descriptors. We demonstrated force dynamics within cytoskeleton, as well as nucleoskeleton in living cells which were subjected to mechanical state modulation: myosin motor inhibition, micro-compression stimulation and geometrical confinement manipulation. Our results highlight the alteration in the intracellular prestress to attenuate environmental stimuli; to involve in cellular survival against mechanical signal-initiated death during cancer growth and metastasis; and to initiate cell migration.

Abstract Background This study aimed to clarify predictors of preterm birth in pregnancy of women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We investigated the predictors of preterm birth before pregnancy from the perspective of the importance of preconception care. Methods We analysed fetal outcomes of 108 pregnancies in 74 SLE patients in a retrospective study. We compared pre-pregnancy clinical characteristics and disease activity in these women between the preterm birth and full-term birth groups to select predictive factors for preterm birth before pregnancy. Results Eighty-three of 108 pregnancies resulted in live births, of which 27 (25.0%) were preterm births. Pre-pregnancy serum complement 3 (C3) level was significantly lower in the preterm birth group (77.0 mg/dl) than the full-term birth group (87.5 mg/dl) (P = 0.029). Multivariate analysis identified history of lupus nephritis (odds ratio: 5.734, 95% CI 1.568–21.010, P = 0.008) and low C3 level (< 85 mg/dl) at pre-pregnancy (odds ratio 4.498, 95% CI 1.296–15.616, P = 0.018) as risk factors for preterm birth. The greater the number of these risk factors, the higher was the preterm birth rate (P = 0.0007). In the case of SLEDAI score ≤ 4, the preterm birth rate was higher in the pre-pregnancy low C3 group (< 85 mg/dl) (42.1%) than in the high C3 group (C3 ≥ 85 mg/dl) (14.7%) (P = 0.018). Conclusion For patients with a history of LN, treatment management focusing on pre-pregnancy serum complement levels is very important.

Abstract Background The harvest index (HI) is a measure of the biological success of forming harvestable products. However, our understanding of the genetic basis of HI in rice (Oryza sativa L.) is limited, because it is a complex trait consisting of various yield-related traits and physiological attributes. YTH183 is a high-yielding line with large panicles and high HI derived from a cross between the Indica Group variety IR 64 and the NPT line IR 69093-41-2-3-2 (YP5). Results Here, we detected two novel QTLs for HI, designated qHI5.1 on chromosome 5 and qHI8.1 on chromosome 8, by using 155 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross between IR 64 and YTH183. The YTH183 allele at qHI5.1 contributed to a wide grain, resulting in heavy grain weight and panicle weight, and was consistently effective under the different environmental conditions of subtropical (Ishigaki) and temperate (Tsukuba) regions. Genetic polymorphism revealed that qHI5.1 was identical to GSE5/GW5, which is known to control the grain weight. On the other hand, although qHI8.1 functioned additively with qHI5.1 for higher HI, it did not show any significant effect on grain or panicle weight. In addition, its effects on HI were shown only in the first seasons at Ishigaki but not at Tsukuba or in the second season at Ishigaki. Conclusion Our results indicate that qHI5.1 controls the grain size, regardless of whether environmental conditions are of subtropical or temperate regions, while qHI8.1 might be involved in controlling the physiological processes of source ability or the translocation of photosynthesis products from vegetative organs to grains depending on environmental conditions during the maturing stage. These QTLs will be useful genetic resources for future breeding programs to break through the ceiling of maximum yield in Indica Group varieties.

Venous occlusion of the lower limbs, which simulates edema, can alter heart rate variability (HRV) by increasing feedback information from group III/IV sensory fibers. Our aim was to quantify this effect among healthy young men. The study group included 13 men (mean age, 20.4 years). Venous occlusion of the lower limbs was induced using a pressure cuff around both thighs. The effect of occlusion on autonomic cardiac response was quantified under occlusion pressures of 20, 60, and 100 mmHg. Compression was applied for 5 min. HRV was evaluated from changes in the low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) power of the electrocardiogram and the resulting LF/HF balance. Near-infrared spectroscopy of the leg was used to quantify the effects of occlusion on deoxyhemoglobin, measured as the area under the curve (HHb-AUC). The occlusion pressure of 100 mmHg induced a significant increase in the LF/HF ratio, compared to the baseline (p < 0.05). HHb-AUC was highest for the 100 mmHg occlusion pressure compared with the 20 and 60 mmHg pressures (p < 0.01). These findings indicate that venous dilation may elicit a shift towards sympathetic dominance in the autonomic balance.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the frequency of typical Japanese dietary pattern (JDP) meal consumption and nutrient intake in Japanese university athletes. Dietary information was collected on three non-consecutive days using the 24-hour dietary recall method in the summer of 2013 and 2015. JDP meals were defined based on the Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top. A total of 272 (145 males) university athletes were divided into four groups based on their daily frequency of JDP meal consumption: daily consumption was ≤0.67 times in Group I (36 males, 57 females), once in Group II (39 males, 22 females), 1.33 times in Group III (35 males, 21 females), and ≥1.67 times in Group IV (35 males, 27 females). Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the odds ratio of not meeting the reference intake value of the dietary recommendation for athletes (DRA) or the recommended daily allowance for Japanese (2015) (RDA). The median JDP meal consumption was once a day. In both males and females, a significant trend was observed in energy intake, which progressively increased in Groups II, III, and IV compared to Group I (p < 0.001 for both genders). The higher the frequency of JDP meal consumption, the higher the intake of both food groups and nutrients. The higher the JDP meal frequency, the lower the risk of not meeting the DRA or RDA. These observations in summer suggest that increasing the frequency of JDP meal consumption may prevent inadequate nutrient intake for Japanese university athletes.

We conducted an in situ study on CFRP fracturing process using atomic-force-microscopy-based stress-sensitive indentation. Tensile stress distribution during fracture initiation and propagation was directly observed quantitatively. It led to a discovery that previously believed catastrophic fracture of individual carbon fiber develops in a controllable manner in the polymer matrix, exhibiting 10 times increase of fracture toughness. Plastic deformation in crack-bridging polymer matrix was accounted for the toughening mechanism. The model was applied to explain low temperature strength weakening of CFRP bulk material when matrix plasticity was intentionally ‘shut down’ by cryogenic cooling.

The use of heparin and low-dose aspirin is the current conventional treatment for pregnant females with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). However, there is no additional treatment recommended for cases where the standard treatment cannot prevent obstetric complications such as fetal loss and placental insufficiency. Recently, the addition of a novel antimalarial, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), to the conventional treatment has shown the potential to prevent obstetric complications. Herein, we report a case in which the addition of HCQ improved adverse pregnancy outcomes in a pregnant female with systemic lupus erythematosus and aspirin-heparin-resistant APS.

Elastic modulus measured through atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based indentation on single carbon fiber (CF) is found with dependence on lateral applied stress. An in situ indentation experiment inside a high-resolution transmission electron microscope was performed to quantitatively understand this phenomenon by observing microstructure change in the indented area. Change of graphitic basal plane misalignment angle during indentation was linked to a continuous change of modulus with the help of finite element simulation. The established relationship between modulus and indentation force was further used to calculate residual stress distribution in CF imbedded in a CF reinforced polymer composite using the AFM indentation technique. The stress-induced formation of nanoscale defects in the CF and their transformation into fracture were directly characterized.

This study aimed to identify factors predicting the probability of serious fetal acidemia at delivery in placental abruption. We identified 5769 women who delivered at >22 weeks’ gestation at two institutions in a tertiary referral unit specializing in neonatal infant care between January 2007 and December 2011. Ninety-one abruption cases were identified based on clinical and histological diagnoses. Serious fetal acidemia was defined as a pH < 7.0 in the umbilical arterial blood at delivery. Using a linear discriminant function, we calculated the score to determine the probability of serious fetal acidemia. Serious fetal acidemia was observed in 34 patients (37.4%). A logistic regression model showed that abnormal fetal heart rate patterns (bradycardia and late decelerations), uterine spasm, and maternal plasma concentration of fibrinogen less than 288 ng/dL were significantly associated with the occurrence of serious fetal acidemia. We suggest that the implementation of maternal fibrinogen in patients with placental abruption is a prognostic factor for serious fetal acidemia at delivery.

Photosensitivity of flowering is the main yield limiting factor for soybean production in tropical areas. Our objective was to evaluate the variation of photosensitivity in the world soybean mini-core collections (GmWMC) under controlled environment. Ten and 13 h were selected as short- and long- photoperiods. The days from emergence to first flower open (DEF) were 20–49 days under 13 h, whereas 20–31 days under 10 h photoperiods. The variation in DEF under short photoperiod might be caused by juvenile growth phase or post-inductive phase, because 10 h was the photoperiod which induction phase of most genotypes were minimized. Index of photosensitivity of flowering (IPF) varied from 0.00 to 0.47 and correlated positively with DEF under short photoperiod. However, some genotypes were found having higher IPF but shorter DEF, or lower IPF but longer DEF. Results provided the valuable information for soybean production in tropical areas. To date, the applications of photoplethysmograms in the estimation of cuff-less blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, and so on have been studied. Photoplethysmogram waveform features have often been used to estimate the target volumes. For these estimations, it is necessary to acquire photoplethysmogram waveforms and changes in their derivative waveform details, for which the photoplethysmograms measured at comparatively high sampling rates have been used. The performance of smartphone cameras and wearable photoplethysmogram sensors has improved; with regard to mobile health technology, photoplethysmograms measured at lower sampling rates offer considerable advantages. These include lower computational resources, compression of accumulated data, and lower sensor power consumption. However, compared to photoplethysmograms measured at a high sampling rate, photoplethysmogram measurement at a low sampling rate will result in waveform signal degradation. This paper investigates the possibility of using photoplethysmograms measured at a low sampling rate. To this end, we statistically compared photoplethysmogram waveform features obtained from 63 male subjects free of circulatory diseases, at a sampling rate of 240 Hz, with waveform features obtained at low sampling rates (120, 60, 30, 20, and 10 Hz) through downsampling, and evaluated possible commercial use.

Hybrid breakdown, a form of postzygotic reproductive barrier, has been reported to hinder gene flow in many crosses between wild and cultivated rice. Here, the phenomenon of hybrid breakdown was observed as low-tillering (i.e., low tiller number) in some progeny of an interspecific cross produced in an attempt to introduce Oryza meridionalis Ng (W1625) chromosomal segments into Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica “Taichung 65” (T65). Low-tillering lines were obtained in BC4-derived progeny from a cross between W1625 and “Taichung 65,” but the locus for low-tillering could not be mapped in segregating populations. As a second approach to map the locus for low-tillering, we analyzed an F2 population derived from a cross between the low-tillering lines and a high-yielding indica cultivar, “Takanari.” A major QTL for low-tillering, qLTN4, was detected between PCR-based markers MS10 and RM307 on the long arm of chromosome 4, with a LOD score of 15.6. The low-tillering phenotype was associated with weak growth and pale yellow phenotype; however, low-tillering plant had less reduction of grain fertility. In an F4 population (4896 plants), 563 recombinant plants were identified and the low-tillering locus was delimited to a 4.6-Mbp region between markers W1 and C5-indel3729. This region could not be further delimited because recombination is restricted in this region of qLTN4, which is near the centromere. Understanding the genetic basis of hybrid breakdown, including the low-tillering habit, will be important for improving varieties in rice breeding.

This paper proposes a classification method using Taguchi’s T-method. Collecting sufficient number of training samples at the initial stage of production and at the beginning of the development process is difficult. Because of the small sample size, it is difficult to apply conventional classification methods. In this paper, we propose a classification method that is based on the Taguchi’s T-method for calculations with small sample sizes. The proposed method involves construction of a classification model that quantifies the Taguchi’s T-method and can be applied to small sample sizes. We confirm that the classification accuracy of the proposed method is superior to that of the Mahalanobis–Taguchi method. Through a verification experiment, we examine the change in the classification accuracy when the number of training samples is increased. It is confirmed that the conventional method outperforms the proposed method when the number of training samples is more than thrice the number of parameters.

Gait parameters calculated from trunk acceleration reflect the features of gait; however, they cannot evaluate the gait pattern corresponding to the gait cycle. This study is aimed at investigating the differences in gait parameters calculated from trunk acceleration during gait corresponding to the gait cycle in healthy subjects with restricted knee extension. Participants included eight healthy volunteers who walked normally (NW) and with knee orthosis that restricted knee extension (ER). The ground reaction force (GRF), joint angles, and trunk acceleration during walking were measured using four force plates, a three-dimensional motion analysis system, and an inertial measurement unit. The peak GRF of the vertical components, joint ranges of motion, and moments of force were analyzed. The root mean square (RMS) and amplitude peak ratio (AR) of autocorrelation function were calculated from the trunk acceleration waveform. The first peak GRF and peak ankle dorsiflexion angles significantly increased during ER. The peak hip extension, knee flexion, knee extension angles, and the peak moment of knee extension significantly decreased during ER compared to that during NW. The acceleration AR significantly decreased during ER compared to that during NW. There was no significant difference in the RMS between the two conditions. The acceleration AR may show the temporal postural structure with restricted knee extension from the terminal stance phase for the ipsilateral limb to the initial stance phase for the contralateral limb. These results suggest that novel metrics for accelerometry gait analysis can reveal gait abnormalities, with restricted knee extension corresponding to the gait cycle.

Kelps form extensive underwater forests that underpin valuable ecosystem goods and services in temperate and polar rocky coastlines globally. Stressors, such as ocean warming and pollution are causing regional declines of kelp forests and their associated services worldwide. Kelp forest restoration is becoming a prominent management intervention, but we have little understanding of what drives restoration success at appropriate spatial scales. Though most restoration guidelines stress the importance of planning, stressor mitigation and ecological knowledge, other factors, such as lack of resources or institutional support are rarely discussed despite being potentially critical to achieving desired restoration outcomes. In this paper, we work to understand the importance of finances and institutions in the context of four of the world’s largest kelp restoration projects. These projects span four countries, six kelp genera and were initiated in response to different causes of decline. We argue that to restore kelp at desired scales, adequate financing, and institutional support are critical to overcome ecological and environmental limitations. Acknowledging limitations, we outline ways to mobilize resources and encourage institutions to support kelp restoration.

Ritodrine hydrochloride is used for preterm labor, although serious side effects, including agranulocytosis, are reported. We report a case of ritodrine hydrochloride-induced agranulocytosis accompanied by bacteremia due to catheter infection. At 24 weeks of gestation, a female patient presented due to threatened premature labor and was administered continuous intravenous infusion of ritodrine hydrochloride. On day 36 after starting intravenous ritodrine hydrochloride, she was diagnosed with agranulocytosis. The white blood cell and granulocyte count nadirs were 1,660/μl and 438/μl. The cumulative dose of ritodrine hydrochloride was 2,610 mg. Ritodrine therapy was immediately stopped, and she was given an intravenous injection of antibiotics and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. From her blood culture, methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was detected. However, she started vaginal delivery two days after we stopped the ritodrine infusion. When using ritodrine hydrochloride, it is necessary to frequently check the white blood cell count, regardless of the total dose and treatment period.

Abstract Background Anesthetic management of lower extremity amputation in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients can be challenging because of their poor cardiovascular status. As previously reported, peripheral nerve block (PNB) may be beneficial in these complicated cases. We report the effects of PNB combined with general anesthesia on hemodynamic stability in HD patients undergoing elective lower extremity amputation. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 13 HD patients who underwent lower extremity amputation. Patients received general anesthesia (GA group, n = 7) or general anesthesia combined with PNB (GA with PNB group, n = 6), as decided by the anesthesiologists. Mean blood pressure (MBP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), lowest BP, heart rate (HR), blood loss, fluid and blood infusion volumes, and doses of vasopressors required were compared for hemodynamic assessment. The coefficient of variation ( CV=σ/X¯ $$ \mathrm{CV}=\upsigma /\overline{\mathcal{X}} $$) of MBP (CVMBP) and SBP (CVSBP) was calculated to compare hemodynamic stability. Intraoperative opioid use and postoperative pain scores at rest using a numerical rating scale (NRS) on postoperative days 0 and 1 were compared for pain assessment. We also assessed 30-day mortality. Results CVMBP in the GA group was significantly higher than that in the GA with PNB group (0.15 ± 0.05 and 0.08 ± 0.04, respectively, p = 0.03). The CVSBP in the GA group was also significantly higher than that in the GA with PNB group (0.16 ± 0.02 and 0.09 ± 0.01, respectively, p = 0.03). No significant differences in other hemodynamic parameters were observed. Intraoperative fentanyl doses were significantly lower in the GA with PNB group (GA 210.7 ± 99.9 μg vs. GA with PNB 113.0 ± 75.6 μg, p = 0.04). There were no significant differences in other pain parameters and 30-day mortality between the groups. Conclusion Our results suggest that PNB combined with general anesthesia contributes to intraoperative hemodynamic stability through better pain control in HD patients undergoing lower extremity amputation.

A pulse waveform profiling algorithm is introduced for processing real-time photoplethysmography (PPG) data in mobile applications. The real PPG waveform is discriminated from artifacts based on rules of probability distribution and physiological significance. The swift background is removed through a two-step method to minimize its effect on the final waveform analysis: interpolating the midpoint of the amplitude of the PPG AC part and then interpolating the minimum of each pulse period. The pulse waveform features are extracted from the stratified PPG wave data. The implementation of the proposed algorithm in a real-time mobile application demonstrated its high efficiency and robustness with a sensitivity of around 96% and a positive specificity of 100%. The potential applications of these extracted features are discussed in terms of long-term trends in physiology such as circadian and arrhythmia real-time monitoring.

PC, PCM, PCS, and PCMS are our designed & synthesized ∼8 nm PAMAM dendrimer (P) -based organic supramolecular systems, for example, PCMS has 32 molecular motors (M), 4 pH sensors (S) and 2 multi-level molecular electronic switches (C). We have reported earlier following a preliminary in-vitro test that the synthesized PCMS can selectively target cancer cell nucleotides if triggered wirelessly by an electromagnetic pulse. Here to further verify its drug potential, we have studied the preliminary efficacy, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics of P derivatives (PC, PCM, PCMS) in-vivo and in-vitro. We used ethanol-induced gastric inflammation model and cultured human gastric epithelial cells AGS to examine to the toxicity of PAMAM dendrimers cell permeability and toxicity, in (a) the cultured human gastric epithelium cells (AGS), and in (b) the gastric ulcer mice model. Here we report that the toxicity of PAMAM dendrimer (>G3.5) P can be reduced by adding C, M and S. Gastric ulcer is the primary stage of the manifestation of acute inflammation, even gastric epithelial cancer. Ethanol causes ulceration (ulcer index 30), thus upregulates both pro and active MMP-9. A 50 μl PCMS dose prior to ethanol administration reduces ulceration by ∼80% and downregulates MMP-9 and prevents oxidative damages of gastric tissue by ECM remodeling. Alcohol's inflammation of mouse stomach causes up-regulation of both pro and active MMP-9, resulting in oxidative damages of gastric tissue by ECM remodeling. PCMS in particular dose window reverses & alters ECM remodeling, thus, neutralizing alcohol-induced inflammation & generation of ROS. Recent progress in rice genomics has promoted the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with yield and its related traits. SPIKE, a QTL controlling spikelet number per panicle, and GPS, a QTL controlling leaf photosynthesis rate, were identical to NAL1. To assess the effect of SPIKE/GPS on yield potential, we compared DNA sequences of these alleles and conducted yield experiments in the field of Japan using the near-isogenic lines NIL-SPIKE (allele from Daringan in IR 64 genetic background), NIL-GPS (allele from Koshihikari in Takanari genetic background), and a chromosome segment substitution line, SL2115 (allele from Koshihikari in IR 64 genetic background). Despite the two SNPs in the promoter regions between Koshihikari and Daringan, both alleles were effective to increase the number of spikelets per panicle both in Takanari and IR 64 backgrounds. However, the extent of the increase was smaller and unstable in Takanari background than that in IR 64 background. In addition, SPIKE/GPS improved percentage of filled spikelets only in the IR 64 background. These results suggest that the effects of SPIKE/GPS alleles are similar but are affected by the difference of the genetic backgrounds. Because the increasing effect of spikelets number per panicle was canceled by the decrease of the number of panicles, which seems to be affected by environmental factors, none of NIL-SPIKE, SL2115, or NIL-GPS significantly out-yielded their parental cultivars. These results indicate the importance to consider genetic backgrounds and QTL-environment interaction toward the future use of SPIKE/GPS.

Action observation (AO) has been used to improve rehabilitation outcomes. We examined the effects of AO gait training on the acquisition of a non-weight-bearing (NWB) gait with crutches. Eighteen healthy young male participants were assigned to control (n = 9) and AO groups (n = 9). All subjects were instructed to walk with crutches at a comfortable speed on a 10-m walkway (10 trials). Participants received a verbal explanation of the experimental task (NWB gait with crutches), after which, those in the AO group watched a video of another person performing the task. An accelerometer was positioned on the third lumbar vertebra and used to measure the trunk acceleration during the experimental task. Gait speed and acceleration root mean squares (RMS) were calculated during the 1st, 5th, and 10th trials for each group. The two-way ANOVA for acceleration RMS revealed significant main effects of trial and group, as well as a significant trial by group interaction. During the first trial, fewer trunk fluctuations were observed in the AO group compared to that in the control group. Thus, AO is effective in improving NWB gait training with crutches during the early phase of acquisition.

To enhance the yield potential of an elite indica rice cultivar, an introgression (BC3-derived) line of IR64, YTH288, was developed using a new-plant-type cultivar, IR66215-44-2-3, as a donor parent. YTH288 has agronomically valuable characteristics such as large panicles, few unproductive tillers, and large leaves inherited from NPT. To identify the genetic basis of these traits, we used 167 F2 plants derived from a cross between IR64 and YTH288 to conduct QTL analysis for five agronomic traits: days to heading (DTH), culm length (CL), flag leaf length (FLL), flag leaf width (FLW), and filled spikelet number per panicle (FSN). Six putative QTL were detected: four on chromosome 4 (for CL, FLL, FLW, and FSN) and two on chromosome 2 (for DTH and FLL). All QTL with the IR66215-44-2-3 allele, except that for FLL on chromosome 2, had positive effects on each trait. To confirm the effects of these putative QTL, we developed NILs with the IR64 genetic background by marker-assisted selection. We observed significant differences in several agronomic traits between IR64 and NILs that carried these QTL on chromosomes 2 and 4. Additionally, four IR64-NILs carrying chromosomal segments derived from different NPT varieties on the long arm of chromosome 4 exhibited similar pleiotropic effects for unique agronomic traits. These NILs can be used as research materials for studying each trait and as breeding materials for yield improvement of indica rice cultivars.

Biomaterials are primarily insulators. For nearly a century, electromagnetic resonance and antenna–receiver properties have been measured and extensively theoretically modeled. The dielectric constituents of biomaterials—if arranged in distinct symmetries, then each vibrational symmetry—would lead to a distinct resonance frequency. While the literature is rich with data on the dielectric resonance of proteins, scale-free relationships of vibrational modes are scarce. Here, we report a self-similar triplet of triplet resonance frequency pattern for the four-4 nm-wide tubulin protein, for the 25-nm-wide microtubule nanowire and 1-μm-wide axon initial segment of a neuron. Thus, preserving the symmetry of vibrations was a fundamental integration feature of the three materials. There was no self-similarity in the physical appearance: the size varied by 106 orders, yet, when they vibrated, the ratios of the frequencies changed in such a way that each of the three resonance frequency bands held three more bands inside (triplet of triplet). This suggests that instead of symmetry, self-similarity lies in the principles of symmetry-breaking. This is why three elements, a protein, it’s complex and neuron resonated in 106 orders of different time domains, yet their vibrational frequencies grouped similarly. Our work supports already-existing hypotheses for the scale-free information integration in the brain from molecular scale to the cognition.

Time crystal was conceived in the 1970s as an autonomous engine made of only clocks to explain the life-like features of a virus. Later, time crystal was extended to living cells like neurons. The brain controls most biological clocks that regenerate the living cells continuously. Most cognitive tasks and learning in the brain run by periodic clock-like oscillations. Can we integrate all cognitive tasks in terms of running clocks of the hardware? Since the existing concept of time crystal has only one clock with a singularity point, we generalize the basic idea of time crystal so that we could bond many clocks in a 3D architecture. Harvesting inside phase singularity is the key. Since clocks reset continuously in the brain–body system, during reset, other clocks take over. So, we insert clock architecture inside singularity resembling brain components bottom-up and top-down. Instead of one clock, the time crystal turns to a composite, so it is poly-time crystal. We used century-old research on brain rhythms to compile the first hardware-free pure clock reconstruction of the human brain. Similar to the global effort on connectome, a spatial reconstruction of the brain, we advocate a global effort for more intricate mapping of all brain clocks, to fill missing links with respect to the brain’s temporal map. Once made, reverse engineering the brain would remain a mere engineering challenge.

Here, we introduce a new class of computer which does not use any circuit or logic gate. In fact, no program needs to be written: it learns by itself and writes its own program to solve a problem. Gödel’s incompleteness argument is explored here to devise an engine where an astronomically large number of “if-then” arguments are allowed to grow by self-assembly, based on the basic set of arguments written in the system, thus, we explore the beyond Turing path of computing but following a fundamentally different route adopted in the last half-a-century old non-Turing adventures. Our hardware is a multilayered seed structure. If we open the largest seed, which is the final hardware, we find several computing seed structures inside, if we take any of them and open, there are several computing seeds inside. We design and synthesize the smallest seed, the entire multilayered architecture grows by itself. The electromagnetic resonance band of each seed looks similar, but the seeds of any layer shares a common region in its resonance band with inner and upper layer, hence a chain of resonance bands is formed (frequency fractal) connecting the smallest to the largest seed (hence the name invincible rhythm or Ajeya Chhandam in Sanskrit). The computer solves intractable pattern search (Clique) problem without searching, since the right pattern written in it spontaneously replies back to the questioner. To learn, the hardware filters any kind of sensory input image into several layers of images, each containing basic geometric polygons (fractal decomposition), and builds a network among all layers, multi-sensory images are connected in all possible ways to generate “if” and “then” argument. Several such arguments and decisions (phase transition from “if” to “then”) self-assemble and form the two giant columns of arguments and rules of phase transition. Any input question is converted into a pattern as noted above, and these two astronomically large columns project a solution. The driving principle of computing is synchronization and de-synchronization of network paths, the system drives towards highest density of coupled arguments for maximum matching. Memory is located at all layers of the hardware. Learning, computing occurs everywhere simultaneously. Since resonance chain connects all computing seeds, wireless processing is feasible without a screening effect. The computing power is increased by maximizing the density of resonance states and bandwidth of the resonance chain together. We discovered this remarkable computing while studying the human brain, so we present a new model of the human brain in terms of an experimentally determined resonance chain with bandwidth 10−15 Hz (complete brain with all sensors) to 10+15 Hz (DNA) along with its implementation using a pure organic synthesis of entire computer (brain jelly) in our lab, software prototype as proof of concept and finally a new fourth circuit element (Hinductor) based beyond Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) hardware is also presented.

This paper proposes a cuff-less systolic blood pressure (SBP) estimation method using partial least-squares (PLS) regression. Level-crossing features (LCFs) were used in this method, which were extracted from the contour lines arbitrarily drawn on the second-derivative photoplethysmography waveform. Unlike conventional height ratio features (HRFs), which are extracted on the basis of the peaks in the waveform, LCFs can be reliably extracted even if there are missing peaks in the waveform. However, the features extracted from adjacent contour lines show similar trends; thus, there is a strong correlation between the features, which leads to multicollinearity when conventional multiple regression analysis (MRA) is used. Hence, we developed a multivariate estimation method based on PLS regression to address this issue and estimate the SBP on the basis of the LCFs. Two-hundred-and-sixty-five subjects (95 males and 170 females [(Mean ± Standard Deviation) SBP: 133.1 ± 18.4 mmHg; age: 62.8 ± 16.8 years] participated in the experiments. Of the total number of subjects, 180 were considered as learning data, while 85 were considered as testing data. The values of the correlation coefficient between the measured and estimated values were found to be 0.78 for the proposed method (LCFs + PLS), 0.58 for comparison method 1 (HRFs + MRA), and 0.62 for comparison method 2 (HRFs + MRA). The proposed method was therefore found to demonstrate the highest accuracy among the three methods being compared.

The growth mode of small Ni clusters evaporated in UHV on HOPG has been investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy. The size, the size distribution, and the shape of the clusters have been evaluated for different evaporation conditions and annealing temperatures. The total coverage of the surface strongly depends on the evaporation rate and time, whereas the influence of these parameters is low on the cluster size. Subsequent stepwise annealing has been performed. This results in a reduction of the total amount of the Ni clusters accompanied by a decreasing in the overall coverage of the surface. The diameter of the clusters appears to be less influenced by the annealing than is their height. Besides this, the cluster shape is strongly influenced, changing to a quasi-hexagonal geometry after the first annealing step, indicating single-crystal formation. Finally, a reproducible methodology for picking up individual clusters is reported .

Intestinal obstruction in pregnancy is rare and is mainly caused by prior pelvic surgery. We herein report a case of intestinal obstruction in a pregnant female with a history of laparoscopic myomectomy, who presented with hypogastric pain, abdominal distension, and vomiting at 26 weeks of gestation. A simple intestinal obstruction was diagnosed by MRI. Conservative treatments, including intravenous hyperalimentation and the placement of an ileus tube, were provided and her abdominal symptoms improved for 14 days. After restarting oral intake, she had no abdominal symptoms. She gave birth to a 2,146 g female infant by caesarean section at 37 weeks and 1 day of gestation. Although an area of cicatrization, which was thought to have been the starting point of the occlusion that caused the intestinal obstruction, was found, the excision of the small intestine was not necessary. Her postoperative course was uneventful. Intestinal obstruction requires a prompt diagnosis and aggressive intervention may be necessary to minimize the morbidity and mortality associated with this rare complication of pregnancy. MRI can be safely used during pregnancy to diagnose intestinal obstruction and intravenous hyperalimentation may improve the maternal and fetal prognoses.

Allergy to common agents, such as plant pollens, dust mites and foods, is termed atopy. Atopy is the principal cause of the chronic inflammatory diseases of eczema (the skin), hayfever (the nose) and asthma (the lungs) in children and young adults. Atopy affects millions of individuals in Japan and other developed countries and is a major source of chronic ill health in childhood and of major health expenditure. Current treatments only control symptoms and there is an urgent need for a more fundamental understanding of the origins of atopy in order to plan more effective treatment and prevention. This may become a useful model for other common multifactorial disease.

Graphene-based nano-objects such as nanotrenches, nanowires, nanobelts and nanoscale superstructures have been grown by surface segregation and precipitation on carbon-doped mono- and polycrystalline nickel substrates in ultrahigh vacuum. The dominant morphologies of the nano-objects were nanowire and nanosheet. Nucleation of graphene sheets occurred at surface defects such as step edges and resulted in the directional growth of nanowires. Surface analysis by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has clarified the structure and functionality of the novel nano-objects at atomic resolution. Nanobelts were detected consisting of bilayer graphene sheets with a nanoscale width and a length of several microns. Moiré patterns and one-dimensional reconstruction were observed on multilayer graphite terraces. As a useful functionality, application to repairable high-resolution STM probes is demonstrated.

Recent developments in the application of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to nanofabrication and nanocharacterization are reviewed. The main focus of this paper is to outline techniques for depositing and manipulating nanometer-scale structures using STM tips. Firstly, the transfer of STM tip material through the application of voltage pulses is introduced. The highly reproducible fabrication of metallic silver nanodots and nanowires is discussed. The mechanism is thought to be spontaneous point-contact formation caused by field-enhanced diffusion to the apex of the tip. Transfer through the application of z-direction pulses is also introduced. Sub-nanometer displacement pulses along the z-direction form point contacts that can be used for reproducible nanodot deposition. Next, the discovery of the STM structural manipulation of surface phases is discussed. It has been demonstrated that superstructures on Si(001) surfaces can be reverse-manipulated by controlling the injected carriers. Finally, the fabrication of an atomic-scale one-dimensional quantum confinement system by single-atom deposition using a controlled point contact is presented. Because of its combined nanofabrication and nanocharacterization capabilities, STM is a powerful tool for exploring the nanotechnology and nanoscience fields.
