PurposeDaily mood can be influenced by a range of experiences. Identifying everyday life experiences that make autistic adults happy and unhappy holds potential to foster positive mood and tackle mental health problems amongst this group.MethodsA total of 293 autistic adults between the ages of 18 to 35 years old (mean age of 26.51 years old (SD = 4.62); 43.3% female gender, 4.8% nonbinary) provided open-text responses regarding everyday sources of happiness and unhappiness. Using an iterative process of inductive coding, 14 happy themes and 22 unhappy themes of mood-changing life experiences were identified based on self-report qualitative data.ResultsCommon themes across the happy and unhappy domain involved social partners, social interactions, and engagement in recreational and employment activities, with additional distinct themes specific to happy or unhappy mood. Top themes identified in the happy domain emphasizes encouraging quality relationships and positive interactions with others and cultivating supportive work/societal environments to build a sense of achievement and value. Meanwhile, emotional tolls accompanied negative relationships and interactions, underscoring the necessity to provide autistic adults with conflict resolution and coping skills to increase feelings of happiness.ConclusionOverall, the wide range of sources of happy and unhappy everyday experiences highlights the importance of considering personal preferences in engagement with others and activities in treatment.

Objective There is limited knowledge about how adolescents with asthma view their disease in daily life and how these views impact on management. The aim of this study was to describe experiences of daily life, with particular focus on thoughts, feelings and management of adolescents with asthma. Methods In this qualitative study, data were obtained from 10 interviews with adolescents (aged 16–18 years) with asthma recruited from the Swedish population-based prospective birth cohort, BAMSE. Data were analysed through Systematic Text Condensation. Results Experiences of daily life among adolescents with asthma were defined in four categories: Insight and understanding ; Asthma not the focus of daily life ; Being acknowledged and, Being affected by asthma symptoms . The adolescents had developed an insight into and understanding of their disease, but did not want asthma to be the focus of their daily lives. The adolescents wanted their asthma to be acknowledged, but not to the point that they were defined by their asthma. They reported having many asthma symptoms, especially during physical activity, but also described a desire to feel healthy, “normal” and like their peers. Conclusions Having asthma in adolescence involves several struggles with ambivalence between adapting socially, feeling healthy and managing one's asthma. Implications in Clinical Practice The provision of person-centred care may be one way to handle the ambivalence among adolescents with asthma and thereby help them to manage their asthma. This article focuses on the doing and undoing of race in daily life practices in Denmark. It takes the form of a dialogue between two women, a heterosexual Muslim woman of colour and a lesbian white woman, who discuss and analyze how their daily life, e.g. interactions with their children’s schools and daycare institutions, shape their racial and gendered experiences. Drawing upon black feminist theory, postcolonial theory, critical race and whiteness studies, the two women illustrate inclusions and exclusions in their society based on gender, race, class and sexuality – and especially pinpoint to how these categories intersect in processes of inclusion and exclusion. The article argues that the lack of a Nordic vocabulary for the term ‘race’ – as ‘race’ is associated with biological racism which dominated in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, and hence is viewed as a historical phenomenon left behind – prevents contemporary people from addressing existing patterns of racial discrimination, inclusion and exclusion in their daily lives, as well as from connecting their contemporary struggles to historical struggles and inequalities. Furthermore, they illustrate how food, class and race intersect with an analysis of the so-called New Nordic Kitchen, exemplified by the world famous Copenhagen restaurant NOMA. The article interprets the New Nordic Kitchen, which has become very popular in the Nordic countries in recent years, as a culinary project performing whiteness, and connects the New Nordic Kitchen’s obsession with ‘the authentic Nordic’ with historical race science in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
