3. Increased Risk of Atopic Diseases in the Siblings of Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study

Abstract

Several studies have shown a strong association between atopic diseases and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the risk of atopic diseases in individuals having ASD-affected siblings has never been investigated. This nationwide population-based cohort study included 2762 individuals with ASD-affected siblings and 11,048 controls. Diagnoses of atopic diseases, including asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and allergic conjunctivitis, were ascertained from 1996 or the birth data to the end of 2011. Individuals with ASD-affected siblings had a higher risk for asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and multiple atopic diseases compared with controls. In conclusion, individuals with ASD-affected siblings were more likely than were the controls to develop atopic diseases, suggesting shared familial mechanisms underlying the two conditions.

Abstract

AbstractBackgroundThe concurrent incidence of autoimmune comorbidities in obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is known. However, the association between OCD and related autoimmune skin diseases (ASDs) has not been well studied.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the association between OCD and the risk of ASDs.MethodsTo assess the risk of developing ASDs, we recruited 44 324 patients with OCD and 177 296 matched controls from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. A Cox regression model was used for the analyses.ResultsAfter adjusting for confounders, an increased risk of ASDs among the patients with OCD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 6.36; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.43-7.45) was found when compared to the controls. Statistically significant associations were found between OCD and seven individual ASDs, including psoriasis (aHR: 12.52; 95% CI: 8.78-17.85), lichen planus (aHR: 27.22; 95% CI: 13.09-56.60), alopecia areata (aHR: 13.69; 95% CI: 9.38-19.98), autoimmune bullous diseases (aHR: 4.30; 95% CI: 2.03-9.11), hidradenitis suppurativa (aHR: 29.95; 95% CI: 3.35-267.62), vitiligo (aHR: 9.35; 95% CI: 5.35-16.32), and lupus erythematosus (aHR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.52-2.91).ConclusionsPatients with OCD had an increased risk of developing ASDs compared to matched controls. Further studies are required to clarify the underlying mechanisms.

36. Polypoid basal cell carcinoma: A scoping review.

Abstract

Polypoid basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is characterized by a stalk connecting the tumor and skin surfaces, with neoplastic cells restricted in the polypoid zone microscopically. A thorough review of polypoid BCC is still lacking. Thus, we performed this scoping review to investigate the clinical manifestations, dermoscopic features, histopathology, treatment, and prognosis of polypoid BCC. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases until December 23, 2021. Studies reporting at least one patient with polypoid BCC following the pathology and clinical criteria were included. A total of 47 studies with 54 patients with solitary polypoid BCC and 13 patients with multiple polypoid BCCs were included. Solitary polypoid BCC occurred at a relatively younger age, with an equal sex ratio. These tumors most commonly presented as red or flesh-colored pedunculated papules and were commonly distributed over nonsun-exposed areas. Most tumors were managed with excision, and recurrence or metastasis was seldom reported. Most patients with multiple polypoid BCCs had basal cell nevus syndrome and presented with generalized distributed, flesh-colored, or brown papules mimicking skin tags. Typical dermoscopic features of BCC could still be observed in these lesions, including arborizing vessels, blue-gray globules, and ovoid nests, which could aid in early diagnosis. In conclusion, polypoid BCC is a distinct variant of BCC with pedunculated morphology. Physicians should be aware of polypoid BCC and may use dermoscopy to aid in early diagnosis and treatment.
