Wugangtong white goose is one of the famous native breed in Hunan province of China. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Wugangtong white goose was reported in Hunan Province first, which was determined through PCR-based method. The total length of the mitogenome is 16,741 bp. It contains the typical structure, including 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes and 1 non-coding control region (D-loop region) as that of most other vertebrates. The overall composition of the mitogenome was estimated to be 30.22% for A, 22.69% for T, 32.02% for C and 15.06% for G. All the protein initiation codons are ATG, except for COX1, COX2 and ND5 are GTG, ND6 is CTA. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Wugangtong white goose will provide an important data set for the study in genetic mechanism of Wugangtong goose in Hunan province. Zhijiang duck (ZJ) is one of the famous indigenous breed of Hunan province in China. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence plays an important role in the accurate determination of phylogenetic relationships among metazoans. It is the first time that the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the ZJ was reported. The total length of the mtDNA is 16,604 bp. It contains the typical structure, including 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, and 1 non-coding control region (D-loop region). The overall composition of the mtDNA was estimated to be 29.22% for A, 22.20% for T, 32.82% for C, and 15.77% for G. Phylogenetic analyses using N-J computational algorithms showed that the analyzed 20 Anseriform species are divided into four major clades: Anatinae, Anserinae, Dendrocygninae, and Anseranatidae. In addition, our work confirmed that ZJ and Anas poecilorhyncha have a close genetic relationship with fellow tribal members Linwu duck and Youxian duck. Meanwhile, we also found that ZJ and A. poecilorhyncha have highly similar genetic relationship. In this study, we cloned and sequenced the complete mitochondrial DNAs of Chinese goose,Anser cygnoidespopulations from three different areas of Hunan province in China. TheAnser cygnoidesbreed Wugangtong white goose (WGTW) sample and Wugangtong grey goose sample (WGTG) were taken from the Wugang county of Shaoyang city, theAnser cygnoidesbreed Xupu goose (XP) sample was taken from the Xupu county of Huaihua city, and theAnser cygnoidesbreed Yanling white goose (YLW) sample was taken from the Yanling county of Zhuzhou city. The organization of the fourAnser cygnoidesbreeds mitochondrial genomes was similar. Phylogenetic analyses using N-J computational algorithms showed that the analyzed species are divided into four major clades: Anatinae, Anserinae, Dendrocygninae and Anseranatidae. And it is made up of two ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes and a non-coding control region (D-loop region). The characteristics of the mitochondrial genome were analyzed and discussed in detail.
