Most people hold beliefs about personality characteristics typical of members of their own and others' cultures. These perceptions of national character may be generalizations from personal experience, stereotypes with a "kernel of truth," or inaccurate stereotypes. We obtained national character ratings of 3989 people from 49 cultures and compared them with the average personality scores of culture members assessed by observer ratings and self-reports. National character ratings were reliable but did not converge with assessed traits. Perceptions of national character thus appear to be unfounded stereotypes that may serve the function of maintaining a national identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterial resistance to antimicrobials is fast becoming a big challenge as resistance to multiple drugs is rising rapidly. The emergence of resistant Staphylococcus aureus worldwide is life-threatening in both humans and animals and yet little is known about the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in developing countries including Uganda. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of antimicrobial resistant S. aureus among humans and animals as well as assess the perceptions and practices of farmers in Kamuli and Isingiro districts in Uganda regarding AMR of S. aureus. A cross-sectional study was conducted between July and September 2020 in 147 randomly selected cattle-keeping households in Isingiro and Kamuli districts. A structured questionnaire uploaded in the Kobo-collect online data collection tool was used to assess farmers' perceptions and practices pertaining to AMR in each of the selected households. Nasal swabs (n = 147) were collected from both cattle and humans (farmers). Bacterial isolation and confirmation was done using Gram-staining and biochemical tests. This was followed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Only 14/147 (9.5%) cattle samples and 45/147(30.6%) human samples tested positive for S. aureus. All cattle S. aureus isolates were resistant to Nitroimidazoles while 92.9% were resistant to Penicillins. None of the isolates were resistant to Fluoroquinolones and Aminoglycosides. All the 14 isolates exhibited AMR to at least one of the assessed antibiotics and 92.9% (13/14) showed evidence of multidrug resistance (MDR). Likewise, S. aureus human isolates showed high levels of resistance to Nitroimidazoles (100%) and Penicillins (93.3%), with none of the isolates having resistance to Aminoglycosides, and only one exhibiting resistance to Fluoroquinolones (2.2%). All the 45 human isolates exhibited AMR to at least one antibiotic while 93% (42/45) had MDR. Most farmers had good perceptions of AMR, with a significantly higher proportion of respondents from Isingiro than Kamuli showing a better understanding of AMR. Antibiotic prophylaxis was reported to be the least practiced measure of diseases and parasites control (17.0%), with more farmers in Isingiro (33.3%) undertaking it than those in Kamuli (1.3%) (p < 0.001). Penicillins and Nitroimidazoles were reported to be the most used antibiotics among cattle and humans. This study provides evidence of occurrence of S. aureus resistance to antimicrobials commonly used in both humans and livestock in Isingiro and Kamuli districts. Introduction: The majority of adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) reside in sub-Saharan Africa, with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs to be met. The health care facilities and professionals involved have a major role to assume in the quality of SRH services offered to these teenagers., Objective: To investigate the SRH services offered to ALHIV subjects in pediatric facilities in Abidjan, Ivory-Coast., Methods: In 2019 we conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study using qualitative and quantitative methods in three pediatric facilities caring for ALHIV subjects (CIRBA, CTAP and CePReF) and participating in the IeDEA (International epidemiologic databases to Evaluate AIDS project) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. This study included: (1) an inventory of SRH services, using a questionnaire and direct observation, describing their adaptation to the teenagers' needs and their inclusion in provision of care; (2 an assessment by means of semi-structured interviews of 14 health professionals' perceptions of the SRH needs of the ALHIV subjects with whom they worked. Quantitative data were expressed in percentages and qualitative data from the interviews were analyzed through inductive thematic analysis., Results: The care provided in the three facilities was poorly adapted to the teenagers' needs. Few SRH services were effectively provided to the ALHIV subjects in the different centers. The services essentially consisted in condom distribution and organization of SRH-based focus groups. Exceptionally, hormonal contraception was offered to teenage girls. Barriers to the services were largely due to poorly equipped facilities, particularly in terms of SRH offer, health professionals' experience, and support provided for ALHIV subjects and their parents. The health professionals were desirous of SRH skill-building programs enabling them to deliver optimal, adequately contextualized SRH services to the teenagers., Conclusions: In pediatric programs addressed to ALHIV subjects in three Abidjan facilities, the teenagers' SRH needs remain unmet. It is urgently necessary to strengthen the health facilities by means of improved equipment, enhanced awareness of teenagers' needs, and training programs enabling the health professionals to provide more adapted sexual and reproductive health services., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Masson SAS. Because of limited data on dengue virus in Burkina Faso, we conducted 4 consecutive age-stratified longitudinal serologic surveys, ≈6 months apart, among persons 1-55 years of age, during June 2015-March 2017, which included a 2016 outbreak. The seroconversion rate before the serosurvey enrollment was estimated by binomial regression, taking age as the duration of exposure, and assuming constant force of infection (FOI) over age and calendar time. We calculated FOI between consecutive surveys and rate ratios for potentially associated characteristics based on seroconversion using the duration of intervals. Among 2,897 persons at enrollment, 66.3% were IgG-positive, and estimated annual FOI was 5.95%. Of 1,269 enrollees participating in all 4 serosurveys, 438 were IgG-negative at enrollment. The annualized FOI ranged from 10% to 20% (during the 2016 outbreak). Overall, we observed high FOI for dengue. These results could support decision-making about control and preventive measures for dengue.

We report the attitudes and practices of health care workers involved in the disclosure process to adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in a network including West and Central African French-speaking countries, and the experiences of young living with HIV (YLHIV). During a three-day workshop in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, caregivers (doctors, psychologists, social workers) from 19 pediatric HIV treatment sites shared their practices and difficulties, and four YPLHIV their own disclosure experience. Thirty five participants from eight West/Central African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Togo) contributed: 14 doctors, eight psychologists, six counselors, three social workers. The experience of the centers was variable, but the age at disclosure was late: 34% of 1296 adolescents between 10 and 12 years of age knew their status. The median age at disclosure was 13 years (range: 11-15 years). The practice of the disclosure was often complex, because of multiple factors (fear of the parents of the breaking of the secrecy, lack of communication between professionals). The individual disclosure was the main practice. Four centers practiced HIV disclosure in group sessions to facilitate mirror support, and one used peer-to-peer support. YPLHIV have advocated for an earlier disclosure, from 10 years. In West and Central Africa, the process of HIV disclosure remains complex for parents and caregivers, and occurs too late. Purpose of Review: Improved access to antiretroviral therapy has resulted in an emerging population of adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. Full disclosure of an HIV diagnosis includes naming HIV/AIDS and is an important step in coping with HIV. We reviewed the recent trends in the rates of children/adolescents who have been informed of their HIV infection according to age groups, the barriers and the evaluated interventions aimed at improving the HIV disclosure process to ALHIV in sub-Saharan Africa., Recent Findings: Literature shows that HIV disclosure remains challenging in sub-Saharan Africa. Although full HIV disclosure rates have increased recently, this is still insufficient and occurs at a late age (median 13 years). Individual disclosure is the main practice but group sessions involving adolescent peers also exist. The practice of the disclosure is often complex, because of multiple barriers related to caregivers (fear of the parents of the breaking of the family secrecy, feelings of guilt) and to healthcare workers (lack of training, excess workload)., Summary: The development and evaluation of research interventions adapted to sociocultural contexts to support timely and safe HIV disclosure to ALHIV is urgently needed to reach the 90-90-90 UNAIDS targets.

More than 3 million children aged less than 15years are infected with HIV worldwide, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The survival of HIV-infected children depends on their access to antiretroviral therapy whose success mainly depends on a good life-long compliance with antiretroviral therapy. Given its complexity and specificity, assessment and monitoring of pediatric compliance with antiretroviral therapy is a major challenge. There is no consensus on a gold standard for monitoring compliance with antiretroviral therapy. Compliance is also influenced by many factors related to the child, the caregiver, the healthcare staff, the healthcare system, and antiretroviral drugs. This review aimed to assess scientific knowledge on pediatric compliance with antiretroviral therapy in Sub-Saharan Africa, and to identify areas for future interventions to improve compliance. Good compliance is essential to achieve the "90% coverage of children on antiretroviral therapy" gold standard of the World Health Organization, and to eliminate HIV infection by 2030., (Copyright © 2017. When conducting research in different cultural settings, assessing measurement equivalence is of prime importance to determine if constructs and scores can be compared across groups. Structural equivalence implies that constructs have the same meaning across groups, metric equivalence implies that the metric of the scales remains stable across groups, and full scale or scalar equivalence implies that the origin of the scales is the same across groups. Several studies have observed that the structure underlying both normal personality and personality disorders (PDs) is stable across cultures. Most of this cross-cultural research was conducted in Western and Asian cultures. In Africa, the few studies were conducted with well-educated participants using French or English instruments. No research was conducted in Africa with less privileged or preliterate samples. The aim of this research was to study the structure and expression of normal and abnormal personality in an urban and a rural sample in Burkina Faso. The sample included 1,750 participants, with a sub-sample from the urban area of Ouagadougou (n = 1,249) and another sub-sample from a rural village, Soumiaga (n = 501). Most participants answered an interview consisting of a Mooré language adaptation of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory and of the International Personality Disorders Examination. Mooré is the language of the Mossi ethnic group, and the most frequently spoken local language in Burkina Faso. A sub-sample completed the same self-report instruments in French. Demographic variables only had a small impact on normal and abnormal personality traits mean levels. The structure underlying normal personality was unstable across regions and languages, illustrating that translating a complex psychological inventory into a native African language is a very difficult task. The structure underlying abnormal personality and the metric of PDs scales were stable across regions. As scalar equivalence was not reached, mean differences cannot be interpreted. Nevertheless, these differences could be due to an exaggerated expression of abnormal traits valued in the two cultural settings. Our results suggest that studies using a different methodology should be conducted to understand what is considered, in different cultures, as deviating from the expectations of the individual's culture, and as a significant impairment in self and interpersonal functioning, as defined by the DSM-5.

Rankings of countries on mean levels of self-reported Conscientiousness continue to puzzle researchers. Based on the hypothesis that cross-cultural differences in the tendency to prefer extreme response categories of ordinal rating scales over moderate categories can influence the comparability of self-reports, this study investigated possible effects of response style on the mean levels of self-reported Conscientiousness in 22 samples from 20 countries. Extreme and neutral responding were estimated based on respondents' ratings of 30 hypothetical people described in short vignettes. In the vignette ratings, clear cross-sample differences in extreme and neutral responding emerged. These responding style differences were correlated with mean self-reported Conscientiousness scores. Correcting self-reports for extreme and neutral responding changed sample rankings of Conscientiousness, as well as the predictive validities of these rankings for external criteria. The findings suggest that the puzzling country rankings of self-reported Conscientiousness may to some extent result from differences in response styles.

Most studies about the higher-order dimensions to be considered in order to parsimoniously describe Personality Disorders (PDs) have identified between two and four factors but there is still no consensus about their exact number. In this context, the cultural stability of these structures might be a criterion to be considered. The aim of this study was to identify stable higher-order structures of PD traits in a French-speaking African and Swiss sample (N = 2,711). All subjects completed the IPDE screening questionnaire. Using Everett's criterion and conducting a series of principal component analyses, a cross-culturally stable two- and four-factor structure were identified, associated with a total congruence coefficient of .98 and .94, respectively, after Procrustes rotation. Moreover, these two structures were also highly replicable across the four African regions considered, North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, and Mauritius, with a mean total congruence coefficient of .97 and .87, respectively. The four-factor structure presented the advantage of being similar to Livesely's four components and of describing the ten PDs more accurately.

Many studies, using information integration theory, have been devoted to the prediction of performance on the basis of ability and motivation information. However, it appears that only two societies. American and East Indian, have been examined with regard to their prevalent performance prediction model. Participants in this study were school children in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Considerable differences between individuals were expected because, as a consequence of colonization, Burkina Faso has been torn between two different value systems: a collectivistic system, with traditional tribal Burkinabè values, and an individualistic system, with occidental values. The study's most notable finding was the coexistence of these two value systems within the same society. The predominant logic of Western societies, that increased motivation will result in increased rewards when initial ability is high, was utilized by 42% of the children; in contrast, 38% of the children applied the dominant logic expressed by East Indian researchers, who have found that regardless of the level of ability, any amount of motivation will result in an identical improvement in performance.
