20. The Maya footprint: soil resources of Chunchucmil, Yucatan, Mexico

Abstract

This study explored and characterized soil physical and chemical properties to determine how the ancient Maya of Chunchucmil, Yucatan, Mexico, fed themselves. Our objectives were to examine the soil resources and the areas of agricultural importance surrounding Chunchucmil and to search for evidence of agricultural intensification of soils by night soil and charcoal amendments. The C isotopic signature of ancient [C.sub.4] crops was not detected, suggesting that either maize (Zea mays L.) was not extensively produced or that the mix of native [C.sub.3] and [C.sub.4] plants in the savanna hid the signature. There were no soil chemical or biomarker evidences of ancient agricultural intensification, suggesting that ancient agriculture was mainly based on shifting cultivation and arboriculture at Chunchucmil. Concentrations of black carbon, Ca, P, K, Mg, and organic C within urban and rural settlements were enhanced, but probably by incidental human activities. We estimate that the land requirement to sustain the population of Chunchucmil at its height would have been greater than the available resources based on traditional agricultural methods. We cannot ignore the possibilities of intensification techniques, like intensive weeding, watering, and organic fertilizers that would have left no or only modestly elevated major elements. But it is probable that the ancient Maya of Chunchucmil traded marine and estuary products from the Gulf Coast and other high-value trade items for imported agricultural products. 25. Two millennia of tropical cyclone-induced mud layers in a northern Yucatán stalagmite : multiple overlapping climatic hazards during the Maya Terminal Classic 'megadroughts'

Abstract

An annually laminated stalagmite from the northern Yucatán Peninsula contains mud layers from 256 cave flooding events over 2240 years. This new conservative proxy for paleotempestology recorded cave flooding events with a recurrence interval of 8.3 years during the twentieth century, with the greatest frequency during the twentieth century and the least frequent during the seventeenth century. Tropical cyclone (TC) events are unlikely to flood the cave during drought when the water table is depressed. Applying TC masking to the Chaac paleorainfall reconstruction suggests that the severity of the Maya “megadroughts” was underestimated. Without a high-resolution radiometric geochronology of individual local TC events, speleothem isotope records cannot resolve whether the Terminal Classic Period in the northern Maya Lowlands was punctuated by several brief drought breaks with normal TCs, or whether the region was very dry and peppered by unusually severe and frequent hurricane seasons. Abstract

Chunchucmil (northwest Yucatan, Mexico) and other large Maya sites from the Classic period often do not exhibit clear edges. Though clusters of massive architecture define the center of these sites, delimiting the extent of settlement sometimes requires arbitrary judgments. Yet many issues depend upon where those edges are and what they are like. For example, identities that may be shared, contested, and imagined in the social and physical construction of boundaries within and around sites. Research at Chunchucmil furnishes a number of lines of evidence for delimiting the edges of this city and the ways in which households beyond the edge affiliated themselves with the site. In other words, spatial concepts such as site and city are not necessarily isomorphic with relational concepts such as community. This paper presents the results of our fieldwork at the edges of Chunchucmil and discusses the kinds of difference that constitute community identity., Chunchucmil, centro urbano del noroeste de Yucatán, fue uno de los sitios mayas más extensos y densamente poblados del Clásico Temprano, aunque no tiene textos glíficos ni pirámides enormes. Diez temporadas de mapeo han revelado que el sitio tuvo un patrón de asentamiento complejo que se puede dividir en varias zonas, basándose en datos tales como: la presencia de conjuntos arquitectónicos ceremoniales, la densidad de residencias y el nivel de participación en la economía urbana. Esta investigación se enfoca en el difícil trabajo de definir los límites de la ciudad y presentar estimaciones sobre el tamaño de su población.

Abstract

The authors presents a reply to a rebuttal in the "Journal of Field Archaelogy," on the analysis of remote sensing imagery and ecological data of ancient Maya Canal systems. They concluded that their previous analysis of radar imagery was in error and there are no large ancient canal systems in the seasonal swamps of the interior Maya lowlands. The authors stand by their original interpretations and conclude that their rebuttal shows a lack of understanding of radar imagery, remote sensing verification and Maya wetland hydrology and soils. Moreover, they concluded that their opposing interpretations are in part the result of different approaches.

Abstract

Phase I and II archaeological investigations were conducted within the Texasgulf Chemical Company project area, Beaufort County, North Carolina. Two sites were identified, 31BF115 and 31BF117. Both contained prehistoric components and 31BF115 had an historic component. Surface and subsurface prehistoric cultural material deposits, including features, were located at 31BF115. No features were found at 31BF117. In-ground historic structural remains and three possible historic burials were identified at 31BF115. The prehistoric components in the two sites have settlement histories which are primarily affiliated with the Woodland period, circa 1000 B.C. to A.D. 1650. Both of the sites were mainly inhabited during the Late Woodland period, A.D. 800 to 1650, Colington phase. The 31BF115 historic component appeared to be primarily from the eighteenth century and was associated with early residences and plantations operated near the town of Bath. 31BF115 is recommended to have cultural significance and it is considered to have potential for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Avoidance of adverse impact is recommended, or, if not possible, data recovery research should be undertaken.
