Jackson Pollock's Number 1A, 1948 painting was investigated using in situ scanning macro-x-ray luorescence mapping (MA-XRF) to help characterize the artist's materials and his creative process. A multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) approach was used to examine the hyperspectral data and obtain distribution maps and signature spectra for the paints he used. The composition of the paints was elucidated based on the chemical elements identiied in the signature spectra and a tentative list of pigments, fillers and other additives is proposed for eleven diferent paints and for the canvas. The paint distribution maps were used to virtually reconstruct the artist process and document the sequence and manner in which Pollock applied the different paints, using deliberate and specific gestures. Abstract: Thin films of (CdTe) x Cu y O z have been prepared by reactive RF cosputtering using high concentrations of copper and oxygen. The films were grown at 350°C on glass and Si substrates. Under these conditions samples of amorphous nature were obtained with some clusters of Cu2O for the larger concentrations of Cu and O used in this work. The largest band gap variation, from 3.5 to 1.4eV, was obtained for the samples grown with an oxygen flow of 17 standard cubic centimeters per minute (sccm) in the growth chamber. The samples are highly resistive for most cases, but for high Cu concentrations resistivities of the order of 103 Ω-cm were obtained in the case of films grown with a flow of 15sccm of oxygen. Purpose: Silent corticotroph adenoma (SCA) exhibits more tumor aggressiveness features than functioning adenomas (FCA). We aimed to investigate PCSK1N expression in CA and examine if ER stress-induced responses affect cell survival in a corticotroph tumor cell model., Methods: Clinical and imaging characteristics were recorded in 33 patients with FCA (20 women, 11 macroadenomas) and 18 SCA (8 women, all macroadenomas). Gene expression of proopiomelanocortin (POMC), T-box transcription factor 19(TBX19)/TPIT, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 1(PCSK1)/PC1/3, and its inhibitor PCSK1N, was measured by RT-qPCR in adenoma tissue.Mouse pituitary corticotroph tumor (AtT-20) cells were treated with tanespimycin (17-AAG), a HSP90 chaperone inhibitor, to induce ER stress, followed by gene and protein analyses., Results: POMC, TPIT, and PCSK1 expression were higher, whereas PCSK1N was lower in FCA compared to SCA. PCSK1N correlated with POMC (rs= -0.514, p <0.001), TPIT (rs= -0.386, p = 0.005), PCSK1 (rs= -0.3691, p = 0.008), and tumor largest diameter (rs= 0.645, p <0.001), in all CA. Induction of ER stress by 17-AAG in AtT-20 cells led to a decrease of POMC and an increase of PCSK1N gene expression at 24h. Moreover, a downregulation of cell cycle, apoptosis, and senescence pathways, and alterations in cell adhesion and cytoskeleton were observed at the protein level., Conclusions: PCSK1N is higher in SCA compared with FCA, and associated with corticotroph cell markers and tumor size. PCSK1N is likely to be part of the adaptive response to ER stress, potentially conferring a survival advantage to the corticotroph tumor cell in conjunction with other proteins., (© The Author(s) 2024. A bacterial brain abscess (BA) is a focal brain infection with largely unknown long-term implications. This prospective study assessed the frequency of fatigue and symptoms of depression at 8 weeks and 1 year after BA and examined the relationship between fatigue, depressive symptoms, and cognitive status. Twenty BA-patients (age 17-73; 45% female) were assessed for fatigue, depression, memory, and executive functions. Fatigue rates were 40-65% at 8 weeks and 25-33% at 1 year on various fatigue questionnaires. Patient Health Questionnaire indicated symptoms of depression in 10% at the 8-week follow-up only. Relevant comorbidities and vocational outcomes were not associated with fatigue or symptoms of depression. Mean fatigue scores improved significantly between the two-time points. Greater fatigue was related to subjective problems with working memory, inhibition, self-monitoring, and emotional control and worse objective verbal memory performance. Symptoms of depression were associated with one out of two fatigue measures. We conclude that fatigue is common in the first year after BA, and higher levels of fatigue are related to more cognitive problems. Symptoms of clinical depression were rare. These findings underscore fatigue as an important consequence of BA and emphasize the necessity for targeted rehabilitation interventions.

Objective: A bacterial brain abscess may damage surrounding brain tissue by mass effect, inflammatory processes, and bacterial toxins. The aim of this study was to examine cognitive and functional outcomes at 8 weeks and 1 year following acute treatment., Methods: Prospective study of 20 patients with bacterial brain abscess (aged 17-73 years; 45% females) with neuropsychological assessment at 8 weeks and 1 year post-treatment. Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version (BRIEF-A) and Patient Competence Rating Scale (PCRS) were used to assess everyday functioning and administered to patients and informants., Results: Cognitive impairment was found in 30% of patients at 8 weeks and 22% at 1 year. Significant improvements were seen on tests of perceptual reasoning, attention, verbal fluency, and motor abilities ( p  < 0.05). At 1 year, 45% had returned to full-time employment. Nevertheless, patients and their informants obtained scores within the normal range on measures of everyday functioning (PCRS and BRIEF-A) at 8 weeks and 1 year. No significant improvements on these measures emerged over time., Conclusion: Residual long-term cognitive impairment and diminished work ability affected 22% and 45% of patients one year after BA. Persistent cognitive impairment emphasizes the importance of prompt acute treatment and cognitive rehabilitation.

Background: In acromegaly, the primary tumor is usually found during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pituitary gland. A remnant tumor after surgery is, however, harder to depict. When a tumor is missed, the remaining option is usually lifelong pharmacological treatment., Purpose: To identify tumors by reassessment of all available MRI scans in pharmacologically treated patients, operated or not, and to compare our results with the routine MRI reports., Material and Methods: Adult patients diagnosed with acromegaly and managed at a tertiary care center between 2005 and 2021 and currently on pharmacological treatment were included. MRI scans were evaluated in a standardized manner and classified independently by a radiologist and an endocrinologist into "certain," "suspected," or "no tumor." In case of disagreement, consensus was achieved with a senior neuroradiologist. The results were compared using the clinical radiologists' routine MRI reports., Results: We identified certain and suspected tumors in 29/74 and 36/74 patients, respectively. No tumor was identified in nine patients. In five of these, no MRI contrast agent was given. Discrepancy between our results and the routine MRI reports was found in 31/74 patients ( P  = 0.01). In 22 patients, the routine reports described no tumor while we identified certain tumors in 2/22 patients and suspected tumors in 13/22 patients., Conclusion: In most patients with pharmacologically treated acromegaly, we identified a certain or suspected pituitary tumor. These findings were more frequent compared to the routine MRI reports. Background and Objectives: A bacterial brain abscess is an emergency and should be drained of pus within 24 hours of diagnosis, as recently recommended. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated whether delaying pus drainage entails brain abscess expansion and what the underlying mechanism might be., Methods: Repeated brain MRI of 47 patients who did not undergo immediate pus drainage, pus osmolarity measurements, immunocytochemistry, proteomics, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography., Results: Time from first to last MRI before neurosurgery was 1 to 14 days. Abscesses expanded in all but 2 patients: The median average increase was 23% per day (range 0%-176%). Abscesses expanded during antibiotic therapy and even if the pus did not contain viable bacteria. In a separate patient cohort, we found that brain abscess pus tended to be hyperosmolar (median value 360 mOsm; range 266-497; n = 14; normal cerebrospinal fluid osmolarity is ∼290 mOsm). Hyperosmolarity would draw water into the abscess cavity, causing abscess expansion in a ballooning manner through increased pressure in the abscess cavity. A mechanism likely underlying pus hyperosmolarity was the recruitment of neutrophils to the abscess cavity with ensuing neutrophil cell death and decomposition of neutrophil proteins and other macromolecules to osmolytes: Pus analysis showed the presence of neutrophil proteins (protein-arginine deiminases, citrullinated histone, myeloperoxidase, elastase, cathelicidin). Previous studies have shown very high levels of osmolytes (ammonia, amino acids) in brain abscess pus. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography showed focal neocortical hypometabolism 1 to 8 years after brain abscess, indicating long-lasting damage to brain tissue., Conclusion: Brain abscesses expand despite effective antibiotic treatment. Furthermore, brain abscesses cause lasting damage to surrounding brain tissue. These findings support drainage of brain abscesses within 24 hours of diagnosis., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s).
