Present study was conducted to evaluate the different levels of energy to protein ratios (EPR) using food waste and black soldier fly larvae meal (FWBSFL) on growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers. A total of 160 one-day old broiler chicks were divided randomly to four groups and each group had 8 replicates with 5 chicks per replicate. The control diet was formulated using conventional feed ingredients with EPR of 154 for the starter period and 167 for the finisher period. The other treatments were diets with normal, low, and high EPR (154,143, and 166 for the starter period; 167, 155, and 177 for the finisher period) using FWBSFL. Feed consumption and body weight gain as well as digestibility of crude protein, crude fiber, and fat were decreased due to feeding of FWBSFL diets. Different levels of EPR using FWBSFL decreased growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as a source of protein in layer diets on product performance, egg quality, hatchability, fertility, and sensory characteristics of eggs. The BSFL contained a high percentage of protein (559.9 g kg−1), metabolizable energy (696.3 kcal kg−1), crude fat (18.6 g kg−1), and dry matter (178 g kg−1) and a good balance of amino acids. A total of 54 Arabic strain hens at nine months of age were mixed with nine cocks at 12 months old; all were divided into three treatments. The diets were formulated based on three levels of energy-to-protein ratio: 155, 140, and 170. The BSFL meal was added at 0, 50, and 10 g kg−1 respectively. The results showed that feed intake, weight gain, Haugh unit, and hatchability were not affected by dietary treatments with BSFL. However, there was significant improvement in hen day egg production and hen house egg production due to dietary treatments of BSFL. Also, feed conversion ratio, egg weight, shell thickness, shell weight, egg yolk color, fertility, and egg mass were affected by dietary treatments. In addition, a significant improvement was observed in appearance, texture, taste, and acceptance of eggs of hens fed BSFL at 50 g kg−1. The odor was not affected by dietary treatments. Black soldier fly larvae can be a good source of protein in layer diets.

The browsing preference and ecological carrying capacity (ECC) of sambar deer (Cervus unicolor brookei) in acacia plantations for management and conservation of the ecosystem were investigated at Sabal Forest Reserve in Sarawak, Malaysia. The identification of the species browsed by the sambar deer was based on an observation of the plant parts consumed. ECC estimation was based on body weight (BW) and the physiological stages of animals browsed in six fenced 4-ha paddocks. Sambar deer were found foraging on only 29 out of 42 species of secondary vegetation in the acacia plantation. The remaining species are too high for the deer to reach. Planted species, Shorea macrophylla are not palatable to the deer. This augurs well for the integration of sambar deer into shorea plantations. The most frequently exploited plants were Ficus spp. Sambar deer preferred woody species more than non-woody species and they are browser animals. By producing metabolizable energy of 19 000 to 27 000 MJ/ha, the ECC was five head/ha to 5.25 head/ha. Given its contribution to the conservation of wildlife and its capacity to sustain the ecosystem, the sambar deer integrated farming system offers a promising strategy for the future of tropical forestry management.

Pineapple agro-waste, the residue produced during harvesting or processing activities, is widely available around the world. After harvesting, most pineapple residue is disposed of and serves as fertilizer, or is burnt in an open field. However, these methods are not only ineffective, but also contribute to air pollution. The main objective of this study is to determine the physicochemical properties (i.e., cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, proximate composition, dry matter, and nitrogen content), of leaves and stems in different varieties (MD2, Moris, and Josapine) of the pineapple plant waste. The data obtained were analyzed using thermogravimetry analysis and proximate analysis. The results showed that the stems and leaves of different varieties exhibit different percentages in lignocellulosic content (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin). Proximate analysis showed that nutrient contents were available in the leaves and stems of pineapple plant of different varieties.

This paper attempts to apply system thinking in solving food security problems especially intropical countries. System thinking is synonymous with ICIC ways which means Idea, Creativity,Innovation, and Commercialization. Through ICIC ways agriculture production systems can beefficiently managed and sustainable. In order to solve food security problems we need to consider3Ps (people, planet and profit) aspect of development. Three examples will be used to explain ICICapproach are livestock-crop plantation (LICRO) integrated production systems as a future animalproduction system in the tropics, oil palm fronds (OPF) as a fiber source for herbivores feeding anddehydrated-processed food waste (DFW) as an ingredient in poultry feed formulation for free rangesystem. This paper will apply system approach to solve some of livestock production problems suchas limited grazing land space for ruminant (cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep and deer), utilizing readilyavailable green fiber source (waste) such as OPF as herbivore feedstuff and re-utilize food waste(processed and dehydrated) from restaurants, hospital canteens, hotels and others as replacementfor expensive imported feed grains in poultry feeding management. Food security problems in termof low in self-sufficiency level in animal protein food such as meat and milk from ruminants and egg&poultry meat can be solved efficiently and economically through application of appropriatetechnology and innovations. We examined unique erythrocyte pits of the peripheral blood and bone marrow in the lesser mouse deer, Tragulus javanicus, using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Under the SEM observation, the pit was observed as a hole on both mature erythrocytes of the peripheral blood and immature erythrocytes of the bone marrow. By the TEM, the mature erythrocytes had a vacuole, which showed complicated shape and occupied considerable space within the cytoplasm. The vacuole was communicated extracellularly by perforation, which corresponded to the hole on the cell surface. In the bone marrow, erythroblast and reticulocytes have a cytoplasmic vacuole. This abnormal feature of the erythrocytes is peculiar to the mouse deer, and not found in other tropical ruminants. Despite the disadvantage of volume loss from the small erythrocytes, the mouse deer were healthy and showed no signs of anaemia.

The intracranial carotid rete (or rete mirabile epidurale) is a unique blood vascular system supplying the brain of artiodactyls, which have either an involuted or no internal carotid artery. Although the lesser and greater mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus and T. napu, respectively) are ruminants, the rete mirabile epidurale is absent. In these animals, as in non-artiodactyls, such as canines, equines and humans, the complete internal carotid artery supplies the brain. It is currently uncertain whether the absence of the rete is confined to mouse deer among ruminants. The absence of the rete in mouse deer provides new insights into the evolution of the arterial system in artiodactyls.

Mouse deer is known as the smallest and one of the most primitive ruminants. The lesser and the greater mouse deer originated in three different parts of Malaysia were examined for cytogenetic study. The chromosome number of the mouse deer was 2n=32, consisted of 15 metacentric autosome pairs and X and Y sex chromosome pair. G-, R-band revealed polymorphisms of sex chromosomes among the mouse deer from different origins. X chro- mosome varied in length of short arm between the lesser and the greater mouse deer. Y chromosome showed poly- morphisms not only between the lesser and the greater mouse deer, but also among the lesser mouse deer from dif- ferent origins. The 18S-28S rRNA genes (18S-28S rDNA) were localized only in the X and Y chromosomes in both lesser and greater mouse deer by the Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method. The hybridization signals of 18S-28S rDNA showed polymorphisms not only in size, but also in their distribution patterns on the sex chromo- somes. In addition to the general banding methods, the FISH analysis determined that the greater mouse deer from Tioman island would be remarkably different from the lesser mouse deer. The cytogenetic observations investigated in this study could be informative to characterize the lesser and the greater mouse deer. And it is also suggested that the chromosomal change would reflect that the relationship between the geographic distribution and speciation among the mouse deer.
