Abstract Background Bladder urothelial cancer is the most common malignancy of the urinary system and the 10th most common cancer worldwide with incidence appearing to show a geographical and exposure pattern. Advances in genomic technologies provide abundant data and insight into tumors at the single-cell resolution and are usually stored in repositories like The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). However, data sources for the TCGA appear to be focused on European and American populations. The extent to which genomic and survival data can be applied to populations not included in the study remains somewhat uncertain. Methods We explored the genomic and survival characteristics of the TCGA pan-cancer atlas of bladder urothelial cancer. We decluttered these characteristics based on racial groups and compared between and among the races and the overall dataset. Results Significant variations were seen in age groups especially Asians (51–60) years and Blacks (61–70) years compared to Whites and the BLCA dataset with a statistically significant difference in mean diagnosis age (p = 0.0048) between Asians and the whole dataset. Overall survival characteristics were similar but genetic features were vastly different. Significant inter-racial alterations could be seen among genes involved in different pathways, oncogenes, tumor suppressors, cytoband amplification and/or deletion, mutation count, and aneuploidy scores. Conclusion The TCGA pan-cancer atlas for bladder urothelial cancer adequately represents White populations only. The genomic features do not apply to Blacks and Asians. We recommend better coverage for other populations to ensure adequate data for clinicians and researchers.

IntroductionLocal and regional recurrence after surgical intervention is a significant problem in cancer management. The multistage theory of carcinogenesis precisely places the presence of histologically normal but mutated premalignant lesions surrounding the tumor - field cancerization, as a significant cause of cancer recurrence. The relationship between tissue dynamics, cancer initiation and cancer recurrence in multistage carcinogenesis is not well known.MethodsThis study constructs a computational model for cancer initiation and recurrence by combining the Moran and branching processes in which cells requires 3 or more mutations to become malignant. In addition, a spatial structure-setting is included in the model to account for positional relativity in cell turnover towards malignant transformation. The model consists of a population of normal cells with no mutation; several populations of premalignant cells with varying number of mutations and a population of malignant cells. The model computes a stage of cancer detection and surgery to eliminate malignant cells but spares premalignant cells and then estimates the time for malignant cells to re-emerge.ResultsWe report the cellular conditions that give rise to different patterns of cancer initiation and the conditions favoring a shorter cancer recurrence by analyzing premalignant cell types at the time of surgery. In addition, the model is fitted to disease-free clinical data of 8,957 patients in 27 different cancer types; From this fitting, we estimate the turnover rate per month, relative fitness of premalignant cells, growth rate and death rate of cancer cells in each cancer type.DiscussionOur study provides insights into how to identify patients who are likely to have a shorter recurrence and where to target the therapeutic intervention.

Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in host defense against infections and regulates the innate and acquired immune response. IL-18 is produced by both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, including monocytes, macrophages, keratinocytes and mesenchymal cell. IL-18 could potentially induce inflammatory and cytotoxic immune cell activities leading to autoimmunity. Its elevated levels have been reported in the blood of patients with some immune-related diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, type I diabetes mellitus, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease. In the present review, we aimed to summarize the biological properties of IL-18 and its pathological role in different autoimmune diseases. We also reported some monoclonal antibodies and drugs targeting IL-18. Most of these monoclonal antibodies and drugs have only produced partial effectiveness or complete ineffectiveness in vitro, in vivo and human studies. The ineffectiveness of these drugs targeting IL-18 may be largely due to the loophole caused by the involvement of other cytokines and proteins in the signaling pathway of many inflammatory diseases besides the involvement of IL-18. Combination drug therapies, that focus on IL-18 inhibition, in addition to other cytokines, are highly recommended to be considered as an important area of research that needs to be explored.

This research contributes to the growing body of research on cloud computing and addresses the paucity of research on cloud computing adoption, as well as information systems (IS) and information communication technologies (ICTs) adoption in sub-Saharan Africa. The research addresses the current state of cloud computing adoption in addition to the issues that can encourage or preclude its use by SMEs in sub-Saharan Africa. Further, the research establishes the extent to which cloud computing adoption stimulates small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in sub-Saharan Africa to contribute to development. A qualitative research methodology with an interpretive viewpoint is adopted for this research comprising of two major phases that involved a total of eighteen small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. A pilot exploratory study using grounded theory was conducted in the initial phase and the development and refinement of a conceptual framework for analysis and evaluation was carried out in the second phase. The framework is theoretically grounded in the integration of two distinct theoretical traditions, i.e. institutions theory and the capability approach. This is the first research study that employs such a combination to examine cloud computing adoption. This research examines the expectations of cloud users against their fears together with other related influences to draw conclusions regarding the future of cloud computing usage in sub-Saharan Africa. The research found that SMEs considered issues like security, privacy and trust as playing a role in enabling adoption of cloud computing. This is in contrast with SMEs in the global north where these specific issues are discouraging adoption. The research recommends to policy makers and stakeholders interested in developing the cloud infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa, that there is the need to be cautious in drafting policies (which are non-existent at present). This is in order not to draft policies and regulations with regard to cloud computing usage that will inhibit adoption. Finally, this research presents an incremental model that is used to analyse how cloud service provision was introduced in sub-Saharan Africa. The novel three-stage maturity model identified the incremental approach to the delivery of cloud services in sub-Saharan Africa which started from (i) no local provision, (ii) cloud brokers promoting foreign cloud service provision and (iii) locally-available cloud service provision over a period of three to four years. This research envisages that, with further development of the cloud infrastructure especially in terms of internet connectivity, and improved awareness, more SMEs will adopt cloud computing as part of their IS/ICT strategy.

SUPERCAPACITOR performance ,ENERGY storage ,ENERGY density ,POWER density ,ION migration & velocity - Abstract
The development of efficient supercapacitors hinges on the innovation of superior electrodes, which are pivotal in augmenting their energy storage capabilities. Supercapacitors, recognized for their high‐power density and extended cycle life, play a crucial role as sustainable solutions in addressing energy storage challenges. A fundamental aspect of supercapacitor functionality involves the electrode material, which works in concert with other key components such as the current collector, separator, and electrolyte. This study focuses on evaluating the impact of the current collector material on the performance of symmetric supercapacitors. We investigated the electropolymerization of polyaniline on woven steel mesh current collectors of varying mesh sizes, ranging from 20 to 200 mesh per inch, using assorted deposition conditions. The electrochemically modified woven steel meshes were utilized to construct symmetric supercapacitors. The electrochemical performance of the assembled supercapacitors, configured in a two‐electrode system, was investigated using a variety of electrochemical techniques to better understand the kinetics of electrolyte ion migration. Notably, the 20‐mesh size, characterized by the fewest pores per inch, demonstrated superior performance with an optimum capacitance of 4730 mF/cm2, an energy density of 317.8 μWh/cm2, and a power density of 400 μW/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2. The incidence and case-fatality rates (CFRs) of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the etiological agent for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), have been rising unabated. Even though the entire world has been implementing infection prevention and control measures, the pandemic continues to spread. It has been widely accepted that preventive vaccination strategies are the public health measures for countering this pandemic. This study critically reviews the latest scientific advancement in genomics, replication pattern, pathogenesis, and immunopathology of SARS-CoV-2 infection and how these concepts could be used in the development of vaccines. We also offer a detailed discussion on the anticipated potency, efficacy, safety, and pharmaco-economic issues that are and will be associated with candidate COVID-19 vaccines.

ABSTRACT Spectral karyotyping is a novel method for the simultaneous visualization of the entire chromosomes of an organism by painting the chromosomes using a combination of fluorochromes. This allows improved identification of chromosomal aberrations that cannot be identified by conventional banding methods. Since introduction of cancer as a disease of the genome, researchers have employed various molecular techniques for a better understanding of malignancies. This review discusses the role and contributions of spectral karyotyping in the study and characterization of both solid and hematological malignancies. Keywords: Spectral karyotyping; Neoplasms; Chromosomes.

Medical laboratory personnel encounter diverse health and workplace-related hazards leading to severe health challenges including the ravaging SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is the causal agent of COVID-19. It was first announced in Wuhan, China in December 2019 but started to spread globally by late January 2020. COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global spreading poses additional danger to healthcare personnel particularly the laboratorians. Other health practitioners may engage patients by observing social / physical distancing, but how laboratory staff observe or apply same rule to infectious samples remain a notable question. Activities of laboratorians result in repeated exposure at close interactions to patient’s samples including SARS-CoV-2 infected specimens, which make them susceptible to COVID-19. Therefore, it is imperative to review mitigating measures in restraining possible exposure and spreading of SARS-CoV-2 in the best interest of laboratory staff and pathologists. It is against this backdrop that this paper intends to update readers on measures to restrain SARS-CoV-2 invasion in histopathology laboratory and deduce precautionary measures for observation by healthcare providers in COVID-19 era. Also discussed, is health hazards associated with histopathology laboratory with the objective of encouraging safety consciousness and safe laboratory practices in the face of COVID-19 pandemic.

- Abstract
In this review, various aspects of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) are reviewed. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC3.1.1.7) is an important neurotransmitter because it hydrolyses the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh), it is also the target site of organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. The discovery of the first neurotransmitter ACh was soon followed by the discovery of its hydrolysing enzyme, AChE. The role of AChE in terminating AChE-mediated neurotransmission made it the focus of intense research for much of the past century. The role of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is not known but it is assumed to participate in the growth and development and to scavenge the cholinergic toxins, it is also reported to have an auxiliary role in synaptic transmission. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) are the major groups of cholinesterase differentiated by their substrate preferences. Substrate binding specificity and catalytic efficiency are tangled in enzyme catalysis. The fact that an enzyme may exist in more than one molecular form has been accepted for a number of years.

Background: Morphological examination still forms the main diagnostic tool in the differential diagnosis of molar pregnancies. However, there may be inter and intra observer variability in differentiating partial from complete moles, and hydropic abortions from partial moles. The study was aimed at confirming the diagnoses of hydatidiform moles over a ten-year period using p57KIP2 and Ki-67 immunohistochemical markers. Methods: All morphologically diagnosed cases of hydatidiform moles from 1st January 2006 to 31st December 2015 formed the study materials. The total number of deliveries within the study period was obtained from the obstetrics and gynaecology department. All the relevant request cards, tissue blocks and slides stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) were retrieved from the departmental records and stained with p57KIP2 and Ki-67 immunohistochemical stains. Results: There were one hundred (100) histologically diagnosed cases of hydatidiform moles during the period of the study, of these 71 (71 %) met inclusion criteria. The ages-ranged from 15 to 50 years with a mean age of 29.6 + 1SD years. The highest prevalence was in the 2nd decade of life. The initial H&E diagnosis was 51 partial and 20 complete moles. Of the 71 cases of hydatidiform-moles analysed, 48 (67.6%) showed positivity for both p57 and Ki-67 immunostains and were classified as partial moles, whereas 23 (32.4%) were complete-moles for being negative for p57 immunohistochemical marker. No cases of hydropic abortions were seen. Conclusion: This study showed that hydatidiform-mole affected women more in their 2nd decade of life. Partial-mole is commoner than complete-mole, and with immunohistochemical markers such as p57 and Ki-67, it is easier to confirm the diagnosis of molar gestations and differentiate between partial-mole, hydropic-abortion, and complete-mole. Introduction: Dye is used for the artificial colouration of a substance to facilitate its examination by the use of the coloured organic molecule, a process called staining. Over the past many years, it has been observed that synthetic dyes have many disadvantages associated with them like toxicity and allergenicity. This study aimed to determine the staining effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa extracts of various concentration, various pH and duration in bacteria staining compared with Gram’s staining. Methods: Standard Gram stains as control and both Hibiscus sabdariffa extracts (alcohol and boiled water) were used to stain inflammatory appendix tissue and lung tissue inoculated with bacteria using various concentration (5% and 10%), at various duration (30 seconds and 1 hour) and with change of pH, achieved by treating the extracts with ammonium hydroxide and glacial acetic acid. Each was used as a counterstain in bacterial stain (to replace Safranin/Neutral red) Safranin/Neutral red. Results: All extracts after treatment were acidic but the change of pH was indirectly proportional to the staining ability of the extracts. The Hibiscus solutions gave the background, a brown colouration. And inflammatory cells were demonstrated better than the bacteria with aqueous Hibiscus solution strongly when compared with the alcoholic Hibiscus solution. Conclusion: The results obtained indicate that Hibiscus solution has the potential for use in diagnostic bacteriology in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue section.

Background: Many reports on the toxicity of some mosquito repellents have been recorded, however, its effect on the trachea. Aim: This study was aimed at determining the Histopathological and Morphological changes in Trachea of Wistar rats exposed to selected mosquito repellents commonly used in Sokoto, Nigeria especially after the recent outbreak of Malaria and Dengue fever. Methods: Mosquito repellent brands of Pyrethroids-containing mosquito coil, aerosolized spray and Dichlovors aerosolized spray were studied over 21 days. Rats were exposed to the fumes in coils and aerosolized insecticidal spray for 5 minutes each day, in a well-ventilated box. Control rats were not exposed. Animals were sacrificed on days 7, 14 and 21 post-exposure. Results: Early observable behavioural signs include irritation, scratching of the eyes and nostrils; in later stages of exposure, sneezing, ruffled fur and lethargy were observed. Gross changes were not apparent in most organs, except for frothy trachea observed in few Wistar rats exposed to the fumes. Histopathology revealed varying degrees of epithelial disruption, lymphocytic infiltration and vascular congestion; more apparent 7 days post-exposure and to a lesser degree, 21 days post-exposure. The severity of the macroscopic changes was more in the first 14 days of exposure while it was reduced in rats that were exposed for 21 days. The most obvious changes were observed in coil repellents containing Rich-d-Trans allethrin. Conclusion: Acute exposure to fumes of mosquito repellents containing rich-d-trans allethrin is irritating to the trachea and could lead to possible respiratory problems.

Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) consist of a heterogeneous group of genetically disorders that affect distinct components of the immune system. They manifest as increased susceptibility to life-threatening infections, as well as autoimmunity and inflammatory disease. Among them, patients with diseases of immune dysregulation and autoinflammatory disorders are more complicated with autoimmunity. On the other hand, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is one of the major players in the pathogenesis of autoimmunity and inflammation in PID patients. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting TNF-α would be a potential approach as a therapeutic tool for these diseases. In the current review, we aimed to highlight the characteristics of TNF-α and its important role in the pathogenesis of related complication in PID diseases. Critical evaluation of the mAbs targeting TNF-α (e.g. infliximab, etanercept, and adalimumab) in various immune-mediated complications in PID diseases will be provided, and finally, their clinical efficacy and safety will be reported.

The 2019 and 2020 sporadic outbreaks of yellow fever (YF) in Sub-Saharan African countries had raised a lot of global health concerns. This article aims to narratively review the vector biology, YF vaccination program, environmental factors and climatic changes, and to understand how they could facilitate the reemergence of YF. This study comprehensively reviewed articles that focused on the interplay and complexity of YF virus (YFV) vector diversity/competence, YF vaccine immunodynamics and climatic change impacts on YFV transmission as they influence the 2019/2020 sporadic outbreaks in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Based on available reports, vectorial migration, climatic changes and YF immunization level could be reasons for the re-mergence of YF at the community and national levels. Essentially, the drivers of YFV infection due to spillover are moderately constant. However, changes in land use and landscape have been shown to influence sylvan-to-urban spillover. Furthermore, increased precipitation and warmer temperatures due to climate change are likely to broaden the range of mosquitoes' habitat. The 2019/2020 YF outbreaks in SSA is basically a result of inadequate vaccination campaigns, YF surveillance and vector control. Consequently, and most importantly, adequate immunization coverage must be implemented and properly achieved under the responsibility of the public health stakeholders.

Dengue (DEN) is a semi-neglected and dangerously re-emerging, mosquito-borne viral disease of the Flaviviridae family. Dengue virus (DENV) has been rapidly spreading for the past 6 decades, and now affects more than 50% the world’s population, especially the tropical and subtropical countries. DENV transmission and geographic expansion is expected to rise due to increased international travels, deforestation, industrialization, urbanization and climatic changes. A major control strategy for dengue is achieved through targeting the mosquito vectors, which put a significant break in the transmission of DENV to humans. For long, most dengue endemic nations relied heavily on chemical control measures, however, there were growing concerns and controversies on cases of multiple insecticide resistance. Therefore, more research interest has shifted toward studies on the use of biological control, biotechnological approaches, as potential alternatives. Indeed, dengue prevention is a key, mainly through continuous search for novel vaccines and/or improves on the potency, effectiveness, efficacy, safety, and affordability of existing ones, in order to assure protection against all serotypes of dengue, regardless of age, sex or race of people. In this chapter, we outlined and elucidated available non-insecticide based dengue control strategies that have been implemented, and/or currently being tested. We also updated information on currently licensed dengue vaccines, those in clinical trials and their public health prospects in the prevention of dengue.

SARS‐CoV‐2 is a novel human coronavirus responsible for the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. Pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome are the major complications of COVID‐19. SARS‐CoV‐2 infection can activate innate and adaptive immune responses and result in massive inflammatory responses later in the disease. These uncontrolled inflammatory responses may lead to local and systemic tissue damage. In patients with severe COVID‐19, eosinopenia and lymphopenia with a severe reduction in the frequency of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, B cells and natural killer (NK) cells are a common feature. COVID‐19 severity hinges on the development of cytokine storm characterized by elevated serum levels of pro‐inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, IgG‐, IgM‐ and IgA‐specific antibodies against SARS‐CoV‐2 can be detected in most patients, along with the viral RNA, forming the basis for assays that aid in patient diagnosis. Elucidating the immunopathological outcomes due to COVID‐19 could provide potential targets for immunotherapy and are important for choosing the best clinical management by consultants. Currently, along with standard supportive care, therapeutic approaches to COVID‐19 treatment involve the use of antiviral agents that interfere with the SARS‐CoV‐2 lifecycle to prevent further viral replication and utilizing immunomodulators to dampen the immune system in order to prevent cytokine storm and tissue damage. While current therapeutic options vary in efficacy, there are several molecules that were either shown to be effective against other viruses such as HIV or show promise in vitro that could be added to the growing arsenal of agents used to control COVID‐19 severity and spread.

Background: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic disease associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which progressively induces depletion of CD4+ T cells, and increased vulnerability to opportunistic infections. Previous reported studies associated HIV-infected men with sexual dysfunction; hypogonadism is the most common endocrinological disorders. Its prevalence remains poorly defined and widely ranging from different studies. Methods: This study evaluated a total of 135 serum sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone) and its correlation with CD4+ counts among HIV patients on HAART, HAART naïve patients and negative control subjects (n=45). CD4+ cell counts were estimated using standard flow cytometry method and serum sex hormones by competitive enzyme immunoassay technique. Results: There were significantly lower testosterone and CD4+ levels (p

- Abstract
This paper explores the emergence and adoption of cloud computing by enterprises in sub‐Saharan Africa. Several studies have shown the benefits of cloud technologies for enterprises. Using qualitative techniques we obtained and analyzed data from nine enterprises regarding the adoption of cloud computing as an IT strategy. These enterprises span the finance, information and communication technology (ICT) training, research, construction and manufacturing sectors in Ethiopia. We found that, contrary to the literature on cloud computing adoption in the global north, these enterprises are yet to adopt cloud computing as an IT provisioning method and they lack awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of adopting the cloud. The enterprises are concerned with challenges like security, privacy and trust issues as well as government telecommunications infrastructure policies and cloud technology skills acquisition. This research is part of a wider study that has taken place in Nigeria and Ghana, where we have observed higher levels of adoption. This research raises awareness of the challenges and potential benefits of cloud adoption.

Background: Gynaecological cancers, which affect the female genital tract, constitute a significant public health problem, especially in developing countries. Some of these malignancies have known aetiology and premalignant stages making them preventable. Understanding the burden of gynaecological malignancies in our environment will provide baseline information and help form strategies for their control. Aim: To describe the histological subtypes of gynaecological cancers, their frequency and age distribution trends in Katsina State over the 10-year study period. Methods: This was a 10-year retrospective cross-sectional multicenter study of all histologically diagnosed gynaecological cancer cases seen from 1st January 2012 to 31st December 2021 at Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina, General Hospital Katsina and General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital Katsina. Data for this study were extracted from departmental record registers of the pathology laboratories of the corresponding hospitals whose laboratories provide pathology services to the State. Cancer distribution over the years was sorted based on the primary site of diagnosis, histological diagnosis and age. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science version 28 and results were presented in tables and charts. Results: Two thousand three hundred and fifty-nine cancers were seen over the 10-year study period. Of these cases, 58.4% (n = 1,378) were females. Gynaecological malignancies accounted for 18.7% (441/2,359) of all cancers and 32.0% (441/1,378) of all female cancers. The highest frequency of gynaecological cancers was seen in women who were within the age groups of 40-49 and 50-59, and the lowest was seen in women who were ≥90 years old. The mean age was 48.9 ± 14.9 years. The most common site of gynaecological malignancies was the cervix uteri (n = 262, 59.4%) followed by the ovary (n = 106, 24.0%). Other sites in descending order were corpus uteri (n = 29, 6.6%), vulva (n = 9, 2.0%) and vagina (n = 2, 0.5%). The most common histo-morphologic subtypes were large-cell keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma in the cervix, large-cell non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma in the cervix and cystadenocarcinoma in the ovary. Choriocarcinoma was found in 33 cases (7.5%). Conclusion: This study demonstrated the various histotypes of gynaecological malignancies and their trends in Katsina state. The leading cancer was found to be cervical cancer which is mainly preventable. It is hoped that data from this study will provide a basis for making and implementing policies and strategies to lessen the problems of gynaecological malignancies through regular screening programs, especially for cervical cancer and accepting human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination take-up. 37. Cloud Computing Adoption by SMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa

- Abstract

- Abstract
The development of efficient supercapacitors hinges on the innovation of superior electrodes, which are pivotal in augmenting their energy storage capabilities. Supercapacitors, recognized for their high-power density and extended cycle life, play a crucial role as sustainable solutions in addressing energy storage challenges. The electrochemical performance of the assembled supercapacitors, configured in a two-electrode system, was investigated using a variety of electrochemical techniques to better understand the kinetics of electrolyte ion migration. Notably, the 20-mesh size, characterized by the fewest pores per inch, demonstrated superior performance with an optimum capacitance of 4730 mF/cm
2 , an energy density of 317.8 μWh/cm2 , and a power density of 400 μW/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 ., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)- Published
