In order to advance our understanding of the dynamic interactions between coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and the magnetized solar wind, we investigate the impact of magnetic erosion on the well-known aerodynamic drag force acting on CMEs traveling faster than the ambient solar wind. In particular, we start by generating empirical relationships for the basic physical parameters of CMEs that conserve their mass and magnetic flux. Furthermore, we examine the impact of the virtual mass on the equation of motion by studying a variable-mass system. We next implement magnetic reconnection into CME propagation, which erodes part of the CME magnetic flux and outer-shell mass, on the drag acting on CMEs, and we determine its impact on their time and speed of arrival at 1 AU. Depending on the strength of the magnetic erosion, the leading edge of the magnetic structure can reach near-Earth space up to $\approx$ three hours later, compared to the non-eroded case. Therefore, magnetic erosion may have a significant impact on the propagation of fast CMEs and on predictions of their arrivals at 1 AU. Finally, the modeling indicates that eroded CMEs may experience a significant mass decrease. Since such a decrease is not observed in the corona, the initiation distance of erosion may lie beyond the field-of-view of coronagraphs (i.e. 30 $\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$).

Major solar eruptions occasionally direct interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) to Earth and cause significant geomagnetic storms and low-latitude aurorae. While single extreme storms are of significant threats to the modern civilization, storms occasionally appear in sequence and, acting synergistically, cause 'perfect storms' at Earth. The stormy interval in January 1938 was one of such cases. Here, we analyze the contemporary records to reveal its time series on their source active regions, solar eruptions, ICMEs, geomagnetic storms, low-latitude aurorae, and cosmic-ray (CR) variations. Geomagnetic records show that three storms occurred successively on 17/18 January (Dcx ~ -171 nT) on 21/22 January (Dcx ~ -328 nT) and on 25/26 January (Dcx ~ -336 nT). The amplitudes of the cosmic-ray variations and sudden storm commencements show the impact of the first ICME as the largest (~ 6% decrease in CR and 72 nT in SSC) and the ICME associated with the storms that followed as more moderate (~ 3% decrease in CR and 63 nT in SSC; ~ 2% decrease in CR and 63 nT in SSC). Interestingly, a significant solar proton event occurred on 16/17 January and the Cheltenham ionization chamber showed a possible ground level enhancement. During the first storm, aurorae were less visible at mid-latitudes, whereas during the second and third storms, the equatorward boundaries of the auroral oval were extended down to 40.3{\deg} and 40.0{\deg} in invariant latitude. We report observations of energetic electron flux and Phase Space Density (PSD) to show that a relatively weak magnetic storm with $Sym-H_{min} \approx -50 $nT, resulted in a relativistic and ultra--relativistic electron enhancement of two orders of magnitude similar to the St. Patrick's event of 2015, an extreme storm with $Sym-H_{min} \approx -235 nT$. This enhancement appeared at energies up to $\approx 10$ MeV, lasted for at least 24 days and was not recorded in geosynchronous orbit where most space weather alert data are collected. By combined analysis of PSD radial profiles and Fokker--Planck simulation, we show that the enhancement of relativistic and ultra--relativistic electrons is caused by different mechanisms: first, chorus waves during the intense substorm injections of April 21--25 accelerate the seed electron population to relativistic energies and redistribute them while inward diffusion driven by Pc5 ULF waves further accelerates them to ultra--relativistic energies.

We investigate the response of the outer Van Allen belt electrons to various types of solar wind and magnetospheric disturbances. We use electron phase space density (PSD) calculations as well as concurrent Pc5 and chorus wave activity observations in the outer belt during the Van Allen Probes era to compare 20 electron enhancement and 8 depletion events. Results indicate that the combined effect of magnetopause shadowing and outward diffusion driven by Pc5 waves is present in both groups of events. Furthermore, in the case of enhancement events, the synergy of enhanced seed population levels and chorus activity -- due to the enhanced substorm activity -- can effectively replenish the losses of relativistic electrons, while inward diffusion can further accelerate them.

The dynamical relationship between magnetic storms and magnetospheric substorms presents one of the most controversial problems of contemporary geospace research. Here, we tackle this issue by applying a causal inference approach to two corresponding indices in conjunction with several relevant solar wind variables. We demonstrate that the vertical component of the interplanetary magnetic field is the strongest and common driver of both, storms and substorms, and explains their the previously reported association. These results hold during both solar maximum and minimum phases and suggest that, at least based on the analyzed indices, there is no statistical evidence for a direct or indirect dependency between substorms and storms. Ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves can contribute to the transport, acceleration and loss of electrons in the radiation belts through inward and outward diffusion. However, the most appropriate parameters to use to specify the ULF wave diffusion rates are unknown. Empirical representations of diffusion coefficients often use Kp; however, specifications using ULF wave power offer an improved physics-based approach. We use 11 years of ground-based magnetometer array measurements to statistically parameterise the ULF wave power with Kp, solar wind speed, solar wind dynamic pressure and Dst. We find Kp is the best single parameter to specify the statistical ULF wave power driving radial diffusion. Significantly, remarkable high energy tails exist in the ULF wave power distributions when expressed as a function of Dst. Two parameter ULF wave power specifications using Dst as well as Kp provide a better statistical representation of storm-time radial diffusion than any single variable alone., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters

This article presents a comparative study of three different types of estimators used for supervised linear unmixing of two MEx/OMEGA hyperspectral cubes. The algorithms take into account the constraints of the abundance fractions, in order to get physically interpretable results. Abundance maps show that the Bayesian maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) estimator proposed in Themelis and Rontogiannis (2008) outperforms the other two schemes, offering a compromise between complexity and estimation performance. Thus, the MAP estimator is a candidate algorithm to perform ice and minerals detection on large hyperspectral datasets.
