5. Characterization of Three Carbon- and Nitrogen-Rich Particles from Comet 81P/WILD

Abstract

Comets may sample the early solar system s complement of volatile-forming elements - including C and N - more fully and reliably than do the terrestrial planets or asteroids. Until recently, all elemental analyses of unambiguously cometary material were carried out remotely. The return of the Stardust mission makes it possible to analyze documented material from P81/Wild 2 in the laboratory Wild 2 particles fragmented when they stopped in the aerogel collectors. We have studied three fragments thought to be rich in C and N by using several techniques: FTIR to characterize organic matter; synchrotron-induced x-ray fluorescence (SXRF) to determine Fe and certain element/Fe ratios; SEM to image sample morphology and to detect semiquantitatively Mg, Al, Si, Ca, and Fe; and nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) to measure C, N, O, and Si.

Abstract

Variable temperature photoluminescence of ZnO thin films deposited by a reactive laser ablation of metallic zinc was investigated. Free and bound exciton emissions are absent at cryogenic temperature, and the near band edge (NBE) emission is independent of measurement temperature for the ZnO thin film deposited at room temperature. Annealing at 700 °C results in the removal of defects, reappearance of exciton emission, and a temperature dependent NBE emission. The experimental data suggest that defects play an important role in the band edge emission in terms of both spectra shape and temperature dependence. Our observations will have an impact on device applications using ZnO, especially for optoelectronics that utilizes the exciton emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Single-walled carbon nanotubes have been modified using dodecanethiol as the reaction agent. The thiolated nanotubes form a stable suspension in toluene, and can be used for Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of monolayers. The nanotube conductance decreases by three orders of magnitude and acquires a gate dependence with a memory effect. The conductance for the on and off states with 0 V applied to the gate differs by more than two orders of magnitude. These effects are explained in terms of a chemical reaction between the tube wall and the thiol. The thiolation process is also observed on the exposure of the nanotubes to toluene solutions of dodecanethiol-stabilized Au nanoparticles. The nanoparticles can thus be used for labeling or manipulating the location of the chemical reaction sites on the tube wall. The reaction is followed using optical-absorption measurements. Abstract

Structural, optical, and field-emission properties of ZnO nanowire arrays grown at 90 °C are investigated. Single-crystalline ZnO nanowires with low level of oxygen vacancies are obtained at low temperatures. The nanowire growth is strongly dependent on the seeding method used but independent of the substrate materials, which enable large scale growth of ZnO arrays on all kinds of substrates including polymers. We have demonstrated stable electron emission at low-field strengths for nanowires grown on polystyrene and polyethylene foils, making them promising candidates for fabrication of flexible cold cathodes. Deposition of a few nanometers of gold on ZnO nanowires significantly lowers the field required for electron emission, which is explained in terms of additional field enhancement from Au islands on top of the ZnO nanowires. 10. Thickness dependence of the microstructure and magnetic anisotropy of sputtered Fe50Ni50 films.

Abstract

Fe50Ni50 thin films were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering with a field of ∼40 mT applied parallel to the plane of the film. The microstructure and magnetic anisotropy of the films have been studied as a function of film thickness, which was varied from 13–1100 nm. Vibrating sample magnetometer and magnetic force microscope measurements show that only the very thinnest films (13 nm) showed an out-of-plane magnetic component. The in-plane anisotropy strongly depended on the thickness of the film: films with thickness of <=20 nm were magnetically isotropic with perfectly square B-H loops; when the thickness increased to 30 nm, the film began to show in-plane anisotropy with the magnetic easy axis parallel to the direction of the magnetic field applied during sputtering. The easy axis direction was confirmed by both magneto-optic Kerr effect and B-H loop tracer measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Plantas de arroz, variedades IAC-25 e IAC-47 foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva e com deficiência de B, Cu e Zn. Foram obtidos sintomas de carência dos três micronutrientes. As deficiências induzidas provocaram diminuição na matéria seca total e no número de folhas das duas variedades. O mesmo ocorreu no numero de perfilhos da var. IAC-47. Foi feita a determinação dos teores dos micronutrientes nas plantas submetidas aos diferentes tratamentos o que forneceu dados que ajudam a avaliação do estado nutricional. Rice plants were grown in nutrient solution lither in the presence or in the absence of B, Cu and Zn. The symptoms of deficiency were usually in agreement with those described in the literature. Growth of the variety IAC-47 (number of leaves, tillering and total dry matter) was relatively more affected; this variety, however did produce grains under the minus Cu treatment (one fourth of the yield observed in the "complete" treatment), which did not happen in the case of the other variety. At the beginning of the grain filling period the following leaf contents could be considered as indication of deficiency: B-13 to 25 ppm; Zn-20 ppm; no conclusion could be drawn with respect to Cu levels.

Abstract

As exigências nutricionais das variedades de arroz IAC 25 e IAC 47 foram determinadas analisando-se os diferentes órgãos de plantas cultivadas em solução nutritiva até o fim do ciclo. Verificou-se serem distintas as exigências, maior na IAC 47 (mais tardia) que deu também maior produção de grãos com casca. Rice plants, varieties IAC 25 and IAC 47, were grown in nutrient solution till the end of the life cycle when they were analysed both for macro and micronutrients. Main conclusions were the following: IAC 47, higher yielding, showed larger requirements than IAC 25; for production (total) and export (grain), the demand for nutrients was the same in both varieties.

23. Ordered Arrays of Amphiphilic Gold Nanoparticles in Langmuir Monolayers

Abstract

Large ordered arrays of gold nanoparticles with 1.4 nm cores were created in Langmuir monolayers from an amphiphilic starting material, Palmitoyl Nanogold. Transfer of the films to transmission electron microscope grids by the Langmuir−Schaeffer method resulted in observation of highly ordered hexagonal arrays larger than 250 × 350 nm2. The application of sustained pressure increased the size of ordered regions over those observed immediately after compression. Our work demonstrates ordered arrays with particles that are smaller than those that have been successfully ordered previously in Langmuir layers. The amphiphilic nature of the particles assists in maintaining a monolayer during compression.

24. Inhibitory effect of disodium EDTA upon the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis in vitro: relation to infection prophylaxis of Hickman catheters

Abstract

Granulocytopenic patients with an intravascular catheter are at increased risk for infection with Staphylococcus epidermidis. During the intervals when the catheters are not being used for infusions, it is customary to maintain patency of the catheter lumen with a solution containing heparin. We show that heparin does not inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis isolated from the catheter of an infected patient. A 20-mg/ml solution of disodium EDTA, a chelating agent which effectively anticoagulates blood at this concentration, was shown to be bactericidal for an initial inoculum of 10(3) CFU of staphylococci per ml in 24 h. Vancomycin, an antibiotic which is often employed to treat Staphylococcus infections, was also bactericidal for initial inocula of 10(3) CFU/ml at doses of 6.7 micrograms/ml, a drug concentration in the therapeutic range. When 10(3) staphylococci per ml were cultured in the presence of catheter segments and disodium EDTA or vancomycin, subcultures of the catheters showed minimal or no growth, respectively. In contrast, when cultured with heparin alone, subcultures showed abundant growth. In view of its low cost, effectiveness as an anticoagulant, and bactericidal activity, EDTA should be studied as a replacement for heparin solutions for the maintenance of intravenous catheters in granulocytopenic patients.

Abstract

Rice plants were grown either in full strength nº 2 solution of HOAGLAND & ARNON (1950) or in the same with high levels of Al, Cl and Mn (25, 1750 and 25 ppm, respectively). Plants with excess of each element did not complete the reproductive phase of development. Symptoms of toxicity appeared in response to the high levels supplied in the substrate. Dry matter production was relatively more affected in the case of the variety IAC-47. On the other hand, both varieties were more sensitive to Mn toxicity than to Al excess. The leaves had the following levels of the elements under the respective treatments, respectively for the variety IAC-25 and for the variety IAC-47; Al-107 and 221 ppm; Cl-87,500 and 17,500 (lower and upper leaves), 44,125 and 16,250 (lower and upper leaves); Mn - 1,670 and 1,769. The Al content of the roots was 5,639 and 5,872 ppm. Al toxicity decreased P content in all plant parts. Plantas de arroz, variedades IAC-25 e IAC-47 foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva completa e com excesso de Al, Cl e Mn (25, 1750 e 25 ppm, respectivamente). As últimas não completaram o ciclo. Foram observados sintomas típicos de toxidez. A produção de matéria seca foi mais afetada pelos tratamentos na variedade IAC-47. Ambas as variedades mostraram-se mais sensíveis a toxidez de Mn que à de Al. Foram determinados os teores foliares de Al, Cl e Mn associados à toxidez correspondente.

Abstract

The Stardust spacecraft collected thousands of particles from comet 81P/Wild 2 and returned them to Earth for laboratory study. The preliminary examination of these samples shows that the nonvolatile portion of the comet is an unequilibrated assortment of materials that have both presolar and solar system origin. The comet contains an abundance of silicate grains that are much larger than predictions of interstellar grain models, and many of these are high-temperature minerals that appear to have formed in the inner regions of the solar nebula. Their presence in a comet proves that the formation of the solar system included mixing on the grandest scales.

Abstract

To achieve sustainable range management and avoid or minimize environmental contamination, the Army needs to know the amount of explosives deposited on ranges from different munitions and how these are degraded and transported under different geological and climatic conditions. The physical form of the deposited explosives has a bearing on this problem, yet the shapes and size distributions of the explosive particles remaining after detonations are not known. We collected residues from 8 high-order and 6 low-order non-tactical detonations of TNT-filled 155-mm rounds. We found significant variation in the amount of TNT scattered from the high-order detonations, ranging from 0.00001 to 2% of the TNT in the original shell. All low-order detonations scattered percent-level amounts of TNT. We imaged thousands of TNT particles and determined the size, mass and surface-area distributions of particles collected from one high-order and one low-order detonation. For the high-order detonation, particles smaller than 1 mm contribute most of the mass and surface area of the TNT scattered. For the low-order detonation, most of the scattered TNT mass was in the form of un-heated, centimeter-sized pieces whereas most of the surface area was again from particles smaller than 1 mm. We also observed that the large pieces of TNT disintegrate readily, giving rise to many smaller particles that can quickly dissolve. We suggest picking up the large pieces of TNT before they disintegrate to become point sources of contamination.

30. Lower eocene and paleocene gentianaceae: floral and palynological evidence.

Abstract

Lower Eocene flowers with Pistillipollenites macgregorii pollen represent the earliest megafossil evidence of the Gentianaceae. The Paleocene occurrence of P. macgregorii, the fossil's modern floral structure, and suggested trends in the evolution of pollen in the Gentianaceae indicate a considerably earlier origin for the family. Floral morphology typical of bee-pollinated flowers provides the earliest, albeit indirect, fossil evidence of bees.
