This paper presents a study that investigates digital competencies within the Zimbabwean secondary education system. Limited research has focused on Zimbabwe’s secondary schoolteachers’ digital literacy in online learning. The study utilised DigComp 2.2 as the framework, and employed a multi-method participative approach to collect data from secondary schools across the 10 provinces of the country. Thrirty nine interviews were conducted across Zimbabwe’s 10 provinces, including 15 FGDs with learners, 21 in-depth interviews with teachers, and three key informant interviews with education directors, resulting in 215 participants. The results of a 3-dimensional modal analysis revealed a multifaceted situation in five key areas: problem-solving, safety and security, digital content creation, communication and collaboration, and information and data literacy. The study found that both teachers and learners were proficient in using applications such as WhatsApp, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Computer Science students demonstrated specialised skills, particularly in programming. Although teachers aim to improve digital literacy by teaching critical evaluations of online content, challenges persist in rural regions because of limited access to ICT tools and infrastructure. Collaboration is facilitated through platforms such as WhatsApp; however, ensuring inclusive participation remains a challenge. Digital safety and security have been identified as the major concerns. While progress has been made in areas such as Communication and Collaboration and Information Literacy, challenges still exist in digital content creation, problem-solving, and safety and security. These findings offer policymakers insights into maximising the impact of integrating ICTs in education.

Background/Objectives: Regular physical activity is associated with several benefits among children and adolescents. Globally, only limited surveillance data, collected using harmonized approaches to accurately compare levels of physical activity among children and adolescents are available. Through its Global Matrix initiatives, Active Health Kids Global Alliance provides an opportunity for participating countries/jurisdictions to compare physical activity levels of children and adolescents based on ten common indicators. The 2022 Zimbabwe Report Card summarizes the best available evidence and assigns grades on these ten indicators of physical activity for children and adolescents. Methods: Through an iterative process, a team of national experts working in various sectors of physical activity used Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance's Global Matrix benchmarks and grading rubric, to assign Report Card grades on 10 indicators of physical activity (Overall Physical Activity, Organized Sport and Physical Activity, Active Play, Active Transportation, Sedentary Behaviours, Physical Fitness, School, Family and Peers, Community Environment, and Government) among 5-17-year-old children and adolescents in Zimbabwe. Published and unpublished data as well as policy documents informing grades for each indicator were summarized. An unweighted average of all studies with data for an indicator was used to inform the grade assignment. Where data were unavailable or insufficient to provide accurate estimates, an incomplete grade was assigned. The primary purpose of the present study was to synthesize and summarize the best available data and assign grades on 10 common indicators of physical activity for children and adolescents. The secondary objective was to compare Report Grades across three Global Matrix initiatives. Results: Grades for the ten common indicators for Global Matrix 4.0 plus Nutritional Status (B+) were assigned as follows: Overall Physical Activity (C+), Organized Sport and Physical Activity (B-), Active Play (C+), Active Transportation (B), Sedentary Behaviours (C), Physical Fitness (Incomplete), Family and Peers (Incomplete), School (C), Community and Environment (C-), Government (D). Generally, grades for individual behaviours (Physical Activity, Organized Sport and Physical Activity, Active Play, Active Transportation, Sedentary Behaviours) were higher than for sources of influence (Family and Peers, School, Community and Environment, Government). Across 3 Global Matrices, the grade for Overall Physical activity (C+) did not change, Community and Environment (F, D, C-) steadily improved over time; while those for Active Transportation, Sedentary Behaviours and Sports were unchanged for Global Matrix 2.0 and 3.0, but declined for Global Matrix 4.0. Conclusion: Although grades for individual behaviours were higher than those for sources of influence, overall, our findings show that the levels of physical activity among children and adolescents in Zimbabwe were lower than recommended. Robust surveillance data with large and representative samples are required to provide accurate estimates of physical activity participation among children and adolescents in Zimbabwe. Furthermore, policies and initiatives that promote equitable physical activity participation among children and adolescents are urgently needed in Zimbabwe.

These Lipid Association of India (LAI) recommendations refer to specific patient populations. They follow the previously published LAI part 1 recommendations. These part 2 LAI recommendations focus on specific patient groups. These include patients with heart failure, chronic kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cerebrovascular disease, thyroid disorders, inflammatory joint diseases, familial hypercholesterolaemia and human immunodeficiency virus infection. We also consider women, the elderly and post-transplantation patients. The current recommendations are based, as much as possible, on available data from Indian populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the relationship of psychosocial factors (lack of social support, stress and subjective well-being) and personality traits with myocardial infarction (MI). Materials and Methods: A case-control study involving 100 cases and 100 matched controls was conducted in Lok Nayak Hospital, New Delhi. Results: Stress over 1 year was significantly higher in cases (P < 0.001). However, difference was not significant when scores of social support (P = 0.2), Presumptive Stressful Life Event (PSLE) over lifetime (P = 0.058) and subjective well-being (P = 0.987) were compared. MI was significantly associated with hyperactive (P < 0.001), dominant (P = 0.03), egoistic (P < 0.001) and introvert (P < 0.001) personalities. Conclusion: Certain personality traits and recent stress may be important risk factors of MI, especially in Indians. The finding may have implications on the preventive strategies planned for MI patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many of the systemic manifestations of COPD are shown to be mediated by elevated levels of proinflammatory biomarkers.Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship between the BODE index, its components, disease severity, and proinflammatory biomarkers like C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-6.Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study which included 290 clinically stable COPD patients and 80 smoker controls was conducted. Medical history, body mass index, pulmonary function tests, 6-minute walking test, and modified scale of Medical Research Council dyspnea scale were evaluated. BODE scores were determined. Systemic inflammation was evaluated with the measurement of CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6 in the serum samples of all studied subjects. The correlation between inflammatory biomarkers and BODE index was assessed in COPD patients.Results: We found a significant relationship between COPD stages and BODE index. Our analysis showed significant association between systemic biomarkers and components of the BODE index. Both TNF-α and CRP levels exhibited weak but significant correlation with BODE index. Serum IL-6 concentrations exhibited significant correlation with 6-minute walking test, modified scale of Medical Research Council, and BODE index (r=0.201, P=0.004; r=0.068, P=0.001; and r=0.530, P=0.001, respectively). Also, an inverse and significant correlation was observed between BODE index and FEV1 (r=0.567, P=0.001). IL-6 exhibited a highly significant and inverse correlation with FEV1 (r=−0.580, P=0.001).Conclusion: BODE index should be considered for evaluating patients with COPD. Also, IL-6 seems to be a potential biomarker that may enable determination of the severity and prediction of the course of the disease. Introduction : C-reactive protein being an acute phase protein rises in pneumonia and may be helpful in differentiating patients with lung parenchymal infection from patients with infection sequestered to the bronchial tree. Methods : A prospective study was undertaken where 48 pneumonia patients and 35 patients of COPD with acute exacerbation were included. Serum CRP levels and other traditional markers of infection and chest x-ray were done on presentation. Results : The mean CRP was found to be 75.87±17.1mg/L in patients with pneumonia and 16.71±20.76mg/L in patients with COPD in acute exacerbation. A highly significant (p=0.0012) difference was found in the CRP values between the two groups using the ′t′ test. More than 70% of pneumonia patients had CRP value> 50mg/L with less than 3% of COPD patients having the same. Conclusion : Serum CRP may be a useful adjunctive test in pneumonia patients in distinguishing endobronchial versus parenchymal infection. A CRP value of more than in 50mg/L favours pneumonia.

Filariasis is a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical countries including India. There have been very few case reports of incidental filariasis in the bone marrow aspirate smears in patients with hematological malignancies. We present a case of blastic phase of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with associated filariasis with monocytosis. Such an association, to the best of our knowledge, is hitherto unreported. Moreover, eosinophilia was not a feature in our case. A 37-year-old male, diagnosed case of CML, presented with low grade fever, weight loss and abdominal distension for one month. Physical examination revealed massive splenomegaly and hepatomegaly. However, there was no lymphadenopathy. His hemoglobin was 10.5 g/dl, total leukocyte count was 52.31x 109 / L with platelet count of 30x 109/L .Differential leukocyte count on peripheral smear showed 21% blasts, 30% polymorphs, 16% lymphocytes, 1% myelocyte, 1%metamyelocyte, 30%monocytoid cells and 1% eosinophils. Bone marrow aspirate smears were diluted with peripheral blood and showed blasts and monocytoid cells constituting 25% and 15% of marrow nucleated cells respectively. In addition, occasional microfilaria of Wuchereria bancrofti were also seen both in the peripheral blood and aspirate smears. Based on the above findings, a diagnosis of blastic phase of CML with monocytosis with microfilaria of W.bancrofti. Hence this was an unusual case of CML blastic phase which was associated with filariasis. Moreover, inspite of having filariasis and CML, patient lacked eosinophilia and instead showed monocytosis, which is hitherto unreported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract We present here a case of young male with complaints of fever and swelling in the neck for eight months. History of progressive weakness associated with weight loss was present. Physical examination revealed pallor, multiple enlarged cervical lymph nodes and hepatosplenomegaly. Investigations showed pancytopenia, hyperglobinemia and Leishman-Donovan bodies on bone marrow aspiration. Serological test confirmed diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. However, cervical lymph node aspiration and biopsy were suggestive of Mixed cellularity Hodgkin's disease. This made it a very rare case of Leishmaniasis as an opportunistic infection in a patient of pre-chemotherapy Hodgkin's disease. There was marked improvement in haematological profile and regression of hepatosplenomegaly with Amphotericin B treatment followed by favourable response to chemotherapy. The case emphasizes the suspicion for leishmaniasis as a masquerader and as an opportunistic infection in haematological malignancies.

Abstract Background Metastases of malignant melanoma to the bone marrow are very rare. A few case reports are published in the literature with a known primary site. Case presentation Herein we present a case of metastatic malignant melanoma in bone marrow with occult primary site in a 22- year-old-male. Diagnosis was confirmed by morphology and immunohistochemistry. A pertinent review of literature is also presented by using relevant articles indexed in PubMed (National Library of Medicine) database. The search was based on the following terms: metastasis or metastases, malignant melanoma and bone marrow. Conclusion In this report we discuss a rare case of metastatic malignant melanoma to the bone marrow with an unknown primary. Clinicians must be aware of the varied clinical manifestations of disseminated malignant melanoma even if the primary site is not evident.
