2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) play increasingly significant roles in research and future optoelectronics. However, the large-scale deposition of 2D TMDs remains challenging due to sparse nucleation and substrate dependency. Liquid metals can offer effective solutions to meet these challenges due to their reactive, non-polarized, and templating properties. Here, self-deposition of 2D molybdenum sulfide is shown by introducing a molybdenum precursor onto the surface of a eutectic alloy of gallium and indium (EGaIn). EGaIn serves as an ultra-smooth template and reducing agent for the precursor to form large-scale planar molybdenum sulfides, which is transferrable to any substrate. The molybdenum sulfides form spontaneously on the surface of EGaIn, which has a sufficient potential to drive the cathodic reactions of the deposition process. A highly crystalline 2H-MoS2 is obtained after a final annealing step. This work demonstrates a fundamentally new capability for the formation of large-scale 2D TMDs.

The emergence of piezoelectricity in two-dimensional (2D) materials has represented a milestone towards employing low-dimensional structures for future technologies. 2D piezoelectric materials possess unique and unprecedented characteristics that cannot be found in other morphologies; therefore, the applications of piezoelectricity can be substantially extended. By reducing the thickness into the 2D realm, piezoelectricity might be induced in otherwise non-piezoelectric materials. The origin of the enhanced piezoelectricity in such thin planes is attributed to the loss of centrosymmetry, altered carrier concentration, and change in local polarization and can be efficiently tailored via surface modifications. Access to such materials is important from a fundamental research point of view, to observe the extraordinary interactions between free charge carriers, phonons and photons, and also with respect to device development, for which planar structures provide the required compatibility with the large-scale fabrication technologies of integrated circuits. The existence of piezoelectricity in 2D materials presents great opportunities for applications in various fields of electronics, optoelectronics, energy harvesting, sensors, actuators and biotechnology. Additionally, 2D flexible nanostructures with superior piezoelectric properties are distinctive candidates for integration into nano-scale electromechanical systems. Here we fundamentally review the state of the art of 2D piezoelectric materials from both experimental and theoretical aspects and report the recent achievements in the synthesis, characterization and applications of these materials.

The nascent field of nanotechnology-enabled metallurgy has great potential. However, the role of eutectic alloys and the nature of alloy solidification in this field are still largely unknown. To demonstrate one of the promises of liquid metals in the field, we explore a model system of catalytically active Bi-Sn nano-alloys produced using a liquid-phase ultrasonication technique and investigate their phase separation, surface oxidation, and nucleation. The Bi-Sn ratio determines the grain boundary properties and the emergence of dislocations within the nano-alloys. The eutectic system gives rise to the smallest grain dimensions among all Bi-Sn ratios along with more pronounced dislocation formation within the nano-alloys. Using electrochemical CO2 reduction and photocatalysis, we demonstrate that the structural peculiarity of the eutectic nano-alloys offers the highest catalytic activity in comparison with their non-eutectic counterparts. The fundamentals of nano-alloy formation revealed here may establish the groundwork for creating bimetallic and multimetallic nano-alloys.

Liquid metals (LMs) are emerging as unique fluids for a variety of applications, but their nanoscale solvation properties remain largely understudied. In this work, a combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to investigate the structure of the interface between the bulk room temperature liquid metal (RTLM) and the LM oxide in nanodroplet systems of gallium, EGaIn (75.5% gallium, 24.5% indium), and Galinstan (68.5% gallium, 21.5% indium, 10% tin). Field's metal (51% indium, 32.5% bismuth, 16.5% tin) is also investigated, which melts at ≈62 °C, as a contrast to the other systems. AFM measurements reveal distinct sub‐oxide nanostructured layering in all three RTLM systems, and Field's metal above the melting point, to differing degrees. EGaIn and Galinstan show multiple penetration events between 20 and 30 nm, with smaller, less complex events in Ga. MD simulations suggest that this layering is a result of the near‐surface ordering of LM atoms beneath the oxide layer. Importantly, the atoms in this region do not behave as solids but are more ordered than in a pure disordered liquid system. Liquid metal‐based printing techniques are emerging as an exemplary platform for harvesting non‐layered 2D materials with a thickness down to a few nanometres, leading to an ultra‐large surface‐area‐to‐volume ratio that is ideal for sensing applications. In this work, the synthesis of 2D tin dioxide (SnO2) by exfoliating the surface oxide of molten tin is reported which highlights the enhanced sensing capability of the obtained materials to ammonia (NH3) gas is reported. It is demonstrated that amperometric gas sensors based on liquid metal‐derived 2D SnO2 nanosheets can achieve excellent NH3 sensing performance at low temperature (150 °C) with and without UV light assistance. Detection over a wide range of NH3 concentrations (5–500 ppm) is observed, revealing a limit of detection at the parts per billion (ppb) level. The 2D SnO2 nanosheets also feature excellent cross‐interference performance toward different organic and inorganic gas species, showcasing a high selectivity. Further, ab initio DFT calculations reveal the NH3 adsorption mechanism is dominated by chemisorption with a charge transfer into 2D SnO2 nanosheets. In addition, a proof of concept for prototype flexible ammonia sensors is demonstrated by depositing 2D SnO2 on a polyimide substrate, signifying the high potential of employing liquid metal printed SnO2 for realizing wearable gas sensors. Liquid metal nanodroplets are an emerging class of underexplored materials with significant potential in many applications, including catalysis, bio‐therapeutics, and phase‐change materials. These nanostructures are generally synthesized by mechanical agitation via ultrasonication of low‐melting metals like Ga. Once these materials are successfully synthesized, they can be suspended in a vast array of different solvents. However, one major issue arises specifically with liquid metal alloys which are found to de‐alloy in the sonication process. Here, it is demonstrated that this challenge can be overcome by undertaking sonication at high temperatures, suspending nanodroplets within molten sodium acetate (NaOAc). After cooling, the nanostructures become planet‐like nanodroplets which are covered by an interfacial oxide crust, feature a liquid metal mantle, and a solid core. The molten salt solvent can effectively be removed rendering this approach to be ideal, especially for catalysts. The proof‐of‐concept application is demonstrated by carrying out electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation, using the Cu–Ga system. The superior performance of the Cu–Ga nanodroplets highlights potential in catalyzing a vast array of reactions. Aside from the Cu–Ga system, this facile process can be applied to multiple other systems, including Ag–Ga, Zn–Ga, Bi–Ga, In–Cu, and Sn–Cu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crystallization of alloys from a molten state is a fundamental process underpinning metallurgy. Here the direct imaging of an intermetallic precipitation reaction at equilibrium in a liquid‐metal environment is demonstrated. It is shown that the outer layers of a solidified intermetallic are surprisingly unstable to the depths of several nanometers, fluctuating between a crystalline and a liquid state. This effect, referred to herein as crystal interface liquefaction, is observed at remarkably low temperatures and results in highly unstable crystal interfaces at temperatures exceeding 200 K below the bulk melting point of the solid. In general, any liquefaction process would occur at or close to the formal melting point of a solid, thus differentiating the observed liquefaction phenomenon from other processes such as surface pre‐melting or conventional bulk melting. Crystal interface liquefaction is observed in a variety of binary alloy systems and as such, the findings may impact the understanding of crystallization and solidification processes in metallic systems and alloys more generally. A variety of deposition methods for two-dimensional crystals have been demonstrated; however, their wafer-scale deposition remains a challenge. Here we introduce a technique for depositing and patterning of wafer-scale two-dimensional metal chalcogenide compounds by transforming the native interfacial metal oxide layer of low melting point metal precursors (group III and IV) in liquid form. In an oxygen-containing atmosphere, these metals establish an atomically thin oxide layer in a self-limiting reaction. The layer increases the wettability of the liquid metal placed on oxygen-terminated substrates, leaving the thin oxide layer behind. In the case of liquid gallium, the oxide skin attaches exclusively to a substrate and is then sulfurized via a relatively low temperature process. By controlling the surface chemistry of the substrate, we produce large area two-dimensional semiconducting GaS of unit cell thickness (∼1.5 nm). The presented deposition and patterning method offers great commercial potential for wafer-scale processes.

Known to possess distinctive properties that differ greatly from their bulk form, layered two-dimensional materials have been extensively studied and incorporated into many versatile applications ranging from optoelectronics to sensors. For biomedical research, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have garnered much interest as they have been shown to exhibit relatively low toxicity, high stability in aqueous environments, and the ability to adhere to biological materials such as proteins. These materials are promising candidates, demonstrating potential applications in biosensing, cell imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Preparation and exfoliation of 2D TMDs play an important part in these various applications as their properties are heavily dependent on the number of layers and lateral size. Described in this article are protocols for the liquid exfoliation of 2D TMDs from their bulk materials. Additional protocols are also provided for functionalizing or modifying the surface of the exfoliated 2D TMDs. © 2016 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The synthesis of nanometer‐thick (≈3 nm) gallium oxynitride (GaOxNy) layers with a variable stoichiometry is reported. The approach primarily exploits the liquid metal chemistry (LMC) technique and promises easier integration of 2D materials onto photonic devices compared to traditional top‐down and bottom‐up methods. The fabrication follows a two‐step process, involving first liquid metal‐based printing of a nanometer‐thick layer of gallium oxide (Ga2O3), followed a plasma‐enhanced nitridation reaction. Control over nitridation parameters (plasma power, exposure time) allows adjustment of the GaOxNy layer's composition, granting access to compounds with distinct optical properties (e.g., a 20% index variation), as demonstrated by ellipsometry and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. DFT provides a microscopic understanding of the effect of the bond polarization and crystallinity on the optical properties of GaOxNy compounds. These findings expand the knowledge of ultrathin GaOxNy alloys, which are poorly studied with respect to their gallium nitride (GaN) and Ga2O3 counterparts. They also represent an essential step toward integrating such 2D materials into photonic chips and offer new opportunities to improve the performance of hybrid optoelectronic devices.
