According to the green growth and carbon-neutral policy in Korea, the installation of large-capacity ESSs is rapidly being increased, but a total number of 50 ESS fire cases have occurred since the end of 2023. ESSs are typically composed of series-parallel connections with numerous Li-ion batteries, and when the temperature of a deteriorated cell increases due to thermal, electrical, and mechanical stress, thermal runaway can occur due to additional heat generated by an internal chemical reaction. Here, an internal chemical reaction in a Li-ion battery results in the different characteristics on the decomposition reaction and heat release depending on the operation conditions in the ESS, such as the rising temperature rate, convective heat transfer coefficient, and C-rate of charging and discharging. Therefore, this paper presents mathematical equations and modeling of thermal runaway, composed of the heating device section, heat release section by chemical reaction, chemical reaction section at the SEI layer, chemical reaction section between the negative and positive electrodes and solvents, and chemical reaction section at the electrolyte by itself, based on MATLAB/SIMULINK (2022), which were validated by a thermal runaway test device. From the simulation and test results based on the proposed simulation modeling and test device according to the operation conditions in ESSs, it was found that the proposed modeling is an effective and reliable tool to evaluate the processing characteristics of thermal runaway because the occurrence time intervals and maximum temperatures had almost the same values in both the test device and simulation modeling. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the rising temperature rate and the convective heat transfer coefficient were more critical in the thermal runaway than the C-rate of charging and discharging.

The number of used batteries is expected to dramatically increase in the near future due to the expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) market globally. Accordingly, the Korean government has improved the supporting structures for the recycling system for used batteries, and in particular, in the field of repurposing, various studies are being conducted with a focus on effective evaluation methods that can secure the performance and safety of batteries after use. The repurposing of used batteries is mostly adapted in the field of energy storage systems for normally used EV batteries and a total inspection before repurposing is required due to battery characteristics that can vary depending on the operational environments of and accidents involving medium- and large-sized batteries for EVs and energy storage systems (ESSs) that have been occurring continuously for the past few years. Therefore, this paper investigates the operating mechanisms of the internal resistance test method and implements a test device for middle- and large-sized cells and packs. Based on the proposed test method, the internal resistance of nickel manganese cobalt (NMC)-type commercial large batteries is analyzed according to the SOC (state of charge), SOH (state of health), ambient temperature, and connection degradation of batteries. The distribution degrees of the alternative current (AC) internal resistance (IR) and direct current (DC) internal resistance (IR) measurement methods under state of health (SOH) test conditions are about 7% and 50%. It was found that the DC IR measurement method is more effective in diagnosing battery cell degradation. The distribution degree of DC IR measurements for the degraded connection condition shows an increase of less than 1% regardless of the state of charge (SOC), while the distribution degree of the AC IR measurements shows an increase of up to 319%, indicating that the AC IR method is more effective than the DC IR method in identifying connection degradation. It is confirmed that the proposed method is effective in internal resistance measurement and safety evaluations for the repurposing of batteries.

In recent years, the demand for medium and large secondary batteries in EV (electric vehicle) and ESS (energy storage systems) applications has been rapidly increasing worldwide, and accordingly, the market size is increasing exponentially. However, the recent fire accidents related to secondary batteries for EVs and ESS are having a negative impact on the battery market. Therefore, this paper implements an accident simulation device to perform an external short-circuit test, one of the typical safety tests for NMC-series prismatic and pouch-type batteries that are widely used among battery cells used in medium and large secondary batteries. The implemented accident simulation device for the external short-circuit test is composed of short-circuit resistance, measuring device, control device, etc., and is configured to analyze external short-circuit characteristics according to various test conditions. Based on this, an external short-circuit test according to the type, short-circuit resistance and SOC (states of charge) of the lithium-ion battery was performed to confirm the current and temperature characteristics according to each condition. As a result of performing an external short-circuit test for each protection device in the battery module and preprocessing temperature, it is certain that the module fuse operates over 120 times faster than the cell fuse based on the same SOC conditions, and the quantity of electric charge in the module fuse is over 110 times smaller than of the cell fuse in the case of a short-circuit fault. It is also found that the highest and lowest preprocessing temperatures are considered to be severe conditions. Based on the proposed mechanism of an external short circuit in a Li-ion battery and the test device for the external short circuit, it is confirmed that this paper can contribute to the safety assessment of Li-ion battery-based ESS.

In general, severe load imbalances in small AC micro-grid systems can degrade their operational performance and their maintenance. This is because the unbalanced load in the micro-grid affects the energy flow and the voltage regulation functions of each phase. In order to solve the voltage imbalance problem, several algorithms for the 3-phase 4-leg CVCF inverter have been proposed, but the control algorithms are not enough to operate the 4-leg CVCF inverter in a stable manner. Therefore, this paper proposes a single-phase voltage and power control algorithm for the 3-phase 4-leg CVCF inverter based on a dq control in order to improve the voltage imbalance problem caused by a severely unbalanced load, where the single phase voltage control algorithm is composed of an αβ-dq and a dq-αβ transformer, a voltage and a current controller, and an off-set controller and a PWM, and the single-phase power control algorithm is also composed of an αβ-dq and a dq-αβ transformer, an active/reactive power and a current controller, and an off-set controller and a PWM. Additionally, this paper performs modeling of the single-phase voltage and the power controller for a 4-leg CVCF inverter using the Matlab/Simulink S/W. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the transient stability of the proposed single voltage control algorithm can be improved compared to the conventional control algorithm, and voltage control can also be maintained in a stable manner under extremely unbalanced conditions. Further, it is confirmed that 3-phase currents of the proposed single-phase power control algorithm are controlled in a stable manner under extremely unbalanced conditions.

Generally, PV (photovoltaic) modules are known as devices which are used semi-permanently for more than 20 years, but the electrical performance and lifespan of PV modules can be significantly degraded due to various environmental factors. Thus, a proper evaluation method for aging phenomenon of PV modules is required. Although there already are methods which compare adjusted PV output power based on STC (standard test condition) with initial PV module specification, or perform direct comparison by conducting the test under STC, there are issues with objectivity or efficiency in the existing evaluation method of aging phenomenon due to the data distortion while adjusting measured data or difficulties in implementation. Therefore, in order to overcome the above-mentioned disadvantage of the existing evaluation method for deterioration in PV modules and evaluate the aging characteristics of PV modules based on on-site measurement data in an accurate and efficient manner, this paper implements a test device for aging diagnosis to measure and collect actual data from a PV module section, and presents a modeling of data analysis for aging phenomenon with MATLAB S/W in order to minimize the variability of PV output, communication error, delay, etc. Furthermore, this paper confirms the usefulness of the presented test device for aging diagnosis of the PV modules which is accurately evaluated by considering on-site measurement of PV output power by season.

Installations of an Energy Storage System (ESS) with various functions such as power stabilization of renewable energy, demand management, and frequency adjustment are increasing. In particular, ESS for demand management is being established for high-voltage customers (300 KVA–1000 KVA) who have placed an Auto Section Switch (ASS) at the connection point within the distribution system. However, a power outage may occur in the Power Receiving System (PRS) when a short-circuit fault due to insulation breakdown occurs at the ESS DC side. The reason for this breakdown is that the fault current is reduced by transformer impedance, and the ASS is opened before the DC power fuse. Therefore, using the Graphic Solution Method (GSM), this paper presents an operation algorithm for protection coordination that isolates the fault section by first operating the DC power fuse with a small fault current. Furthermore, fault analysis modeling for a PRS composed of a switchgear section, a main distribution panel, a Power Conditioning System (PCS), a power fuse, and a battery is performed through PSCAD/EMTDC. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the fault section is quickly isolated, and power outages for high-voltage customers are prevented because the DC power fuse selected by the proposed operation algorithm of protection coordination is opened before the ASS.

In recent years, there have been several types of energy storage technologies adopted in many different areas, such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, and renewable stabilization applications. Moreover, technologies of high energy and power density are useful for load leveling, power smoothing for renewable energy systems (RESs), and peak shaving for demand management. Under these circumstances, an estimation technique for assessing environmental issues applied to electrical energy storage (EES) systems is essential in order to promote commercialization of EES systems. Therefore, this paper proposes an estimation method for CO2 emission in cases where EES systems are introduced and not introduced. It is essential to evaluate environmental issues in EES systems at operation stages of their life cycle and make an effective contribution to environmental improvement and reduce potential adverse environmental impacts. Thus, this paper deals with an evaluation method for CO2 emission based on an optimal algorithm including a successive approximation method for the best-mix solution of power sources, etc. From the simulation result based on the proposed evaluation algorithm, it is found that the output power of a coal power plant (high CO2 emission) is replaced by the output powers of the EES systems and the nuclear generator (low CO2 emission).
