Nerve conduction study (NCS) is an essential test for the diagnosis and follow-up of peripheral neuropathy. NCS can objectively quantify peripheral nerve function. NCS is affected by physiological factors such as height, age, body mass index, etc. Hence, the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnosis Medicine (AANEM) is currently forming a Normal Data Task Force (NDTF) to present the normal value, but the number is significantly less. Currently, no research has been carried out on the correlation between nerve conduction speed and height and lower limb length in Koreans. Hence, this study sought to compare the nerve conduction velocity of the lower limbs according to the height and lower limb length. A total of 49 subjects were recruited. When the motor nerve conduction velocity and sensory nerve conduction velocity were compared according to the height and leg length, there was a statistically significant negative correlation of the peroneal and left tibial motor nerves with the height. Also, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed with the superficial peroneal sensory nerve and the sural nerve and the leg length. However, in this study, all the subject are in twentys age, whereas the NDTF is divided by age. Hence, additional studies involving subjects of various age groups are needed.

Abstract Background Mediators, genomic and epigenomic characteristics involving in metabolism of arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (ALOX) and hepatic activation of clopidogrel have been individually suggested as factors associated with resistance against aspirin and clopidogrel. The present multi-center prospective cohort study evaluated whether the mediators, genomic and epigenomic characteristics participating in arachidonic acid metabolism and clopidogrel activation could be factors that improve the prediction of the aspirin and clopidogrel resistance in addition to cardiovascular risks. Methods We enrolled 988 patients with transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke who were evaluated for a recurrence of ischemic stroke to confirm clinical resistance, and measured aspirin (ARU) and P2Y12 reaction units (PRU) using VerifyNow to assess laboratory resistance 12 weeks after aspirin and clopidogrel administration. We investigated whether mediators, genotypes, and promoter methylation of genes involved in COX and ALOX metabolisms and clopidogrel activation could synergistically improve the prediction of ischemic stroke recurrence and the ARU and PRU levels by integrating to the established cardiovascular risk factors. Results The logistic model to predict the recurrence used thromboxane A synthase 1 (TXAS1, rs41708) A/A genotype and ALOX12 promoter methylation as independent variables, and, improved sensitivity of recurrence prediction from 3.4% before to 13.8% after adding the mediators, genomic and epigenomic variables to the cardiovascular risks. The linear model we used to predict the ARU level included leukotriene B4, COX2 (rs20417) C/G and thromboxane A2 receptor (rs1131882) A/A genotypes with the addition of COX1 and ALOX15 promoter methylations as variables. The linear PRU prediction model included G/A and prostaglandin I receptor (rs4987262) G/A genotypes, COX2 and TXAS1 promoter methylation, as well as cytochrome P450 2C19*2 (rs4244285) A/A, G/A, and *3 (rs4986893) A/A genotypes as variables. Background and Purpose Accurate classification of ischemic stroke subtype is important for effective secondary prevention of stroke. We used diffusion-weighted image (DWI) and atrial fibrillation (AF) data to train a deep learning algorithm to classify stroke subtype. Methods Model development was done in 2,988 patients with ischemic stroke from three centers by using U-net for infarct segmentation and EfficientNetV2 for subtype classification. Experienced neurologists (n=5) determined subtypes for external test datasets, while establishing a consensus for clinical trial datasets. Automatically segmented infarcts were fed into the model (DWI-only algorithm). Subsequently, another model was trained, with AF included as a categorical variable (DWI+AF algorithm). These models were tested: (1) internally against the opinion of the labeling experts, (2) against fresh external DWI data, and (3) against clinical trial dataset. Results In the training-and-validation datasets, the mean (±standard deviation) age was 68.0±12.5 (61.1% male). In internal testing, compared with the experts, the DWI-only and the DWI+AF algorithms respectively achieved moderate (65.3%) and near-strong (79.1%) agreement. In external testing, both algorithms again showed good agreements (59.3%–60.7% and 73.7%–74.0%, respectively). In the clinical trial dataset, compared with the expert consensus, percentage agreements and Cohen’s kappa were respectively 58.1% and 0.34 for the DWI-only vs. 72.9% and 0.57 for the DWI+AF algorithms. The corresponding values between experts were comparable (76.0% and 0.61) to the DWI+AF algorithm. Conclusion Our model trained on a large dataset of DWI (both with or without AF information) was able to classify ischemic stroke subtypes comparable to a consensus of stroke experts.

Background Perfusion imaging (PI) serves as a valuable tool for triaging patients with acute ischemic stroke for endovascular treatment (EVT). This study aims to investigate trends in PI use and its impacts on EVT rates and clinical outcomes, particularly focusing on variations across different time windows. Methods Data from a prospective, nationwide, acute stroke registry in South Korea were analyzed retrospectively. PI was regarded as treatment‐decision imaging when conducted either (1) prior to EVT, or (2) within 3 hours from hospital arrival in patients not receiving EVT. The study spanned 3 epochs: 2011–2014, 2015–2017, and 2018–2021. Based on the time from onset to arrival, patients were categorized into 2 time windows: early (0–6 hours) and late (6–24 hours). We evaluated EVT rates and clinical outcomes in patients with anterior large vessel occlusion. Results From 2011 to 2021 among 49 449 patients with acute ischemic stroke presenting within 24 hours of onset, PI use rates declined from 36.9% to 30.1%. In the early window, rates dropped from 48.4% to 32.4%, whereas in the late window, they increased from 23.5% to 27.8%. Factors such as older age, atrial fibrillation, anterior large vessel occlusion, and severe stroke were associated with higher rates in the late window. Conversely, younger age and male sex were associated with higher rates in the early window. For patients with anterior large vessel occlusion, PI use increased the likelihood of receiving EVT in the late window and minimized the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage in the early window. However, 3‐month functional outcomes and mortality were. unaffected. Conclusion The study revealed distinct trends in PI use across early and late time windows, indicating varying roles of PI in these time frames. However, the definitive value and necessity of PI in guiding EVT decision‐making remain unclear, underscoring the need for further research

Summary: Histone H3K9 methylated heterochromatin silences repetitive non-coding sequences and lineage-specific genes during development, but how tissue-specific genes escape from heterochromatin in differentiated cells is unclear. Here, we examine age-dependent transcriptomic profiling of terminally differentiated mouse retina to identify epigenetic regulators involved in heterochromatin reorganization. The single-cell RNA sequencing analysis reveals a gradual downregulation of Kdm3b in cone photoreceptors during aging. Disruption of Kdm3b (Kdm3b+/−) of 12-month-old mouse retina leads to the decreasing number of cones via apoptosis, and it changes the morphology of cone ribbon synapses. Integration of the transcriptome with epigenomic analysis in Kdm3b+/− retinas demonstrates gains of heterochromatin features in synapse assembly and vesicle transport genes that are downregulated via the accumulation of H3K9me1/2. Contrarily, losses of heterochromatin in apoptotic genes exacerbated retinal neurodegeneration. We propose that the KDM3B-centered epigenomic network is crucial for balancing of cone photoreceptor homeostasis via the modulation of gene set-specific heterochromatin features during aging.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a test that diagnoses epilepsy and measures brain function. During EEG, the space between the electrode and the skin is filled with a conductive paste to reduce the impedance between the electrode and the scalp, which helps measure the EEG signals. This study compared the artifacts of the two representative conductive pastes (Ten20 and Elefix). The artifacts, noise, and satisfaction were surveyed after using the two conductive pastes. The two conductive pastes had similar artifacts and noise, but the survey results showed that the Elefix conductive paste had better satisfaction and adhesion. This result may be explained by the imprinting effect according to the experience of using the Elefix conductive paste first in the EEG class. Hence, further research is needed.

Background Recent clinical trials established the benefit of dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel (DAPT‐AC) in early‐presenting patients with minor ischemic stroke. However, the impact of these trials over time on the use and outcomes of DAPT‐AC among the patients with nonminor or late‐presenting stroke who do not meet the eligibility criteria of these trials has not been delineated. Methods and Results In a multicenter stroke registry, this study examined yearly changes from April 2008 to August 2022 in DAPT‐AC use for stroke patients ineligible for CHANCE/POINT (Clopidogrel in High‐Risk Patients with Acute Nondisabling Cerebrovascular Events/Platelet‐Oriented Inhibition in New TIA and Minor Ischemic Stroke) clinical trials due to National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale >4 or late arrival beyond 24 hours of onset. A total of 32 118 patients (age, 68.1±13.1 years; male, 58.5%) with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale of 4 (interquartile range, 1–7) were analyzed. In 2008, DAPT‐AC was used in 33.0%, other antiplatelets in 62.7%, and no antiplatelet in 4.3%. Two intact male dogs were evaluated for symptoms, including hematuria, prostatomegaly, anuria, lethargy, and abdominal mass. Presurgical evaluations, including complete physical examinations, blood examinations, abdominal radiography with contrast (only in Case 2), ultrasonography, and computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (only in Case 1), were performed. A paraprostatic cyst was diagnosed initially, and laparoscopic exploration and surgery were performed. Complete resection was performed in case 1, whereas partial resection with omentalization was performed in case 2. Histopathological examination of the tissue samples confirmed the presence of paraprostatic pseudocysts in both cases, with no evidence of an epithelial lining. These two cases represent the first documented instances of laparoscopic treatment for extraparenchymal prostatic cysts. The laparoscopic treatment proved feasible even in the case of a giant cyst causing anuria (Case 2). Paraprostatic cysts should be considered a potential differential diagnosis for abnormal urination accompanied by an abdominal mass, and long-term postoperative follow-up is necessary.

Abstract Background Genome editing has been considered as powerful tool in agricultural fields. However, genome editing progress in cattle has not been fast as in other mammal species, for some disadvantages including long gestational periods, single pregnancy, and high raising cost. Furthermore, technically demanding methods such as microinjection and somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) are needed for gene editing in cattle. In this point of view, electroporation in embryos has been risen as an alternative. Results First, editing efficiency of our electroporation methods were tested for embryos. Presence of mutation on embryo was confirmed by T7E1 assay. With first combination, mutation rates for MSTN and PRNP were 57.6% ± 13.7% and 54.6% ± 13.5%, respectively. In case of MSTN/BLG, mutation rates were 83.9% ± 23.6% for MSTN, 84.5% ± 18.0% for BLG. Afterwards, the double-KO embryos were transferred to surrogates and mutation rate was identified in resultant calves by targeted deep sequencing. Thirteen recipients were transferred for MSTN/PRNP, 4 calves were delivered, and one calf underwent an induction for double KO. Ten surrogates were given double-KO embryos for MSTN/BLG, and four of the six calves that were born had mutations in both genes. Conclusions These data demonstrated that production of genome edited cattle via electroporation of RNP could be effectively applied. Finally, MSTN and PRNP from beef cattle and MSTN and BLG from dairy cattle have been born and they will be valuable resources for future precision breeding.

An 8-month-old, 3.4 kg, castrated male Toy Poodle was referred for progressive tetraparesis and respiratory disorder without a history of trauma. Repeated computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with different positions of the neck revealed concurrent atlanto-occipital dislocation (AOD) and atlantoaxial instability (AAI) with spinal cord compression. This case was unique due to its congenital nature and the absence of trauma. The surgical treatment involved precise removal of the C1 vertebra’s ventral articular facet, which was compressing on the spinal cord, attributed to its fixed and malaligned position within the atlantooccipital joint. Following facetectomy, the stabilization of the occipital bone to the C2 vertebra was achieved by screws, wire, and polymethyl methacrylate. Two days after surgery, the dog recovered ambulation and showed gradual improvement in gait, despite mild residual ataxia. Postoperative CT and radiographs showed successful decompression of the spinal cord. The screw loosening was confirmed at 114 days, which was managed successfully by extracting the affected screws. Through the 21-month monitoring period, the dog showed a normal gait with a wide-based stance of the pelvic limbs when standing and experienced no pain. This case represents the first report of concurrent congenital AOD and AAI treated with a ventral surgical approach, contributing new insights to the understanding and management of such complex cranio-cervical junction disorders in veterinary neurosurgery.

A 2-year-old, intact female Pomeranian presented with bilateral forelimb lameness, characterized by the olecranon making contact with the ground. The patient experienced two separate incidents of falling, occurring four and three weeks before admission, respectively. Following each episode, non-weight-bearing lameness was initially observed in the left forelimb, followed by the development of crouch gait. Based on the physical examination, radiographic, and ultrasonographic findings, bilateral triceps brachii tendon disruption was diagnosed. Intraoperatively, excessive granulation tissue at the distal end of the tendon was excised. The footprint region of each triceps brachii tendon was decorticated with a high-speed burr until bleeding was observed. The triceps brachii tendon was reattached to completely cover its footprint on the olecranon using the Krackow suture technique. This method involves anchoring the suture through bone tunnels in the ulna. Trans-articular external skeletal fixation was applied to both forelimbs to immobile and stabilize the elbow joints for nine weeks. Subsequently, the dog gradually increased its walking activities while on a leash over a six-week period. At the three-year follow-up, the patient exhibited improved forelimb function and maintained a normal gait without signs of lameness. Suture-mediated anatomic footprint repair proved useful in this single case and may be an effective surgical alternative for the management of chronic triceps brachii tendon disruption in dogs.

Sinus venosus atrial septal defects (SVASDs), concurrent with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections (PAPVCs), are a rare congenital heart disease in dogs. Surgical correction is essential when clinical signs or significant hemodynamic changes are present. We aimed to report on the successful surgical correction of an SVASD with PAPVCs, using a computed tomography (CT)-based customized 3D cardiac model. A 10-month-old male poodle was referred for corrective surgery for an ASD. Echocardiography confirmed a hemodynamically significant left-to-right shunting flow through an interatrial septal defect and severe right-sided heart volume overload. For a comprehensive diagnosis, a CT scan was performed, which confirmed an SVASD with PAPVCs. A customized 3D cardiac model was used for preoperative decision-making and surgical rehearsal. The defect was repaired using an autologous pericardial patch under a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Temporary pacing was applied for sinus bradycardia and third-degree atrioventricular block. The patient recovered from the anesthesia without further complications. The pacemaker was removed during hospitalization and the patient was discharged without complications 2 weeks post-surgery. At the three-month follow-up, there was no shunting flow in the interatrial septum and the right-sided volume overload had been resolved. The cardiac medications were discontinued, and there were no complications. This report indicates the validity of surgical correction under CPB for an SVASD with PAPVCs, and the advantages of utilizing a CT-based 3D cardiac model for preoperative planning to increase the surgical success rate.

Metal artifacts cause inaccuracies in target delineation, radiation treatment planning, and delivery when computed tomography images of a radiotherapy patient implanted with a high-density material in the body are acquired. In this study, we investigated the possibility of obtaining improved images in clinical trials through metal artifact reduction using silicon impression materials without the need for a specific metal artifact reduction algorithm. A silicon impression material exhibiting a constant Hounsfield unit (HU) value according to the mixing ratio of the catalysts and bases was selected. The material did not exhibit any change in weight or shape over time. For both the instances of inserting the metal material and applying the silicon impression material, the HU value and dose were compared with homogeneous cases filled with waterequivalent materials. When the silicon impression material was applied to the region where the high-density material was located, the HU value was within 5% and the dose was within 3% compared with those of the homogeneous cases. In this study, the silicon impression materials reduced metal artifacts. However, because the composition, shape, size, and location of high-density materials differ, further studies are required to consider these factors in clinical applications.

We present three cases of patients with breast cancer and psoriasis who received radiotherapy following breast-conserving surgery. One patient developed an extensive flare-up of psoriasis during chemotherapy. After discontinuing chemotherapy, she received conventional radiotherapy to the ipsilateral whole breast, axillary, and supraclavicular lymph nodes with 50.4 Gy in 28 fractions and boosted with 10 Gy in five fractions to the tumor bed. Two patients received hypofractionated whole-breast radiotherapy at a total dose of 40.05–42.4 Gy in 15–16 fractions. In all three cases, there was no flare-up of psoriatic events at least 6 months after the completion of radiotherapy. We hypothesized that there is a close relationship between psoriatic events and the extent of trauma rather than the daily dose of the fraction. Therefore, we confirmed that the effect of radiotherapy on psoriatic events is minimal if the radiation field size does not exceed that of the whole breast.

Background Approximately 10% of patients with acute ischemic stroke with large‐vessel occlusion (LVO) have mild neurological deficits. Although leptomeningeal collaterals (LMCs) are the major determinant of clinical outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke with LVO, the contribution of baseline LMC status to subsequent infarct progression in patients with mild stroke with LVO is poorly defined. Methods This observational study included patients with acute anterior circulation LVO and mild stroke symptoms (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale < 6) from a prospectively collected, multicenter, national stroke registry. The Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score was quantified on the initial and follow‐up images. An infarct progression, defined as any Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score decrease between the initial versus follow‐up scans, was categorized as either 0/1/2+. The LMCs on the baseline images were graded as good, fair, or poor. Results Of the 623 included patients (mean age, 67.6±13.4 years; 380 [61.0%] men; 186 [29.9%] with reperfusion treatment), the baseline LMC was graded as good in 331 (53.1%), fair in 219 (35.2%), and poor in 73 (11.7%). The Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score decrement was noted as 0 in 288 (46%) patients, 1 in 154 (24%), and 2+ in 181 (29%). A poor LMC was associated with an infarct progression (adjusted odds ratio, 2.05 [95% CI, 1.22–3.47]). Conclusions Poor collateral blood flow was associated with infarct progression in patients with acute ischemic stroke with LVO and mild symptoms. In this selective population, early assessment of collateral blood flow status can help in early detection of patients susceptible to infarct progression.

Objective Unilateral biportal endoscopic (UBE) discectomy and tubular microdiscectomy (TMD) are widely practiced methods for treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Good clinical outcomes of these methods are reported in many papers, but there are a few comparative studies. This study reports the clinical outcomes of UBE and TMD as minimally invasive surgery methods for lumbar disc herniations and discusses the effectiveness of UBE. Methods Sixty-seven patients who had undergone single-level discectomy using one of two methods, UBE or TMD, underwent a prospective follow-up examination. Thirty-four of these patients underwent discectomy using UBE, and the remaining 33 patients underwent TMD. In addition to the traditional measures of outcome, the improvement of generic health-related quality of life and disease-specific measurements like Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score, Short-form 36 (SF-36), and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were evaluated and compared. Results Sixty-seven patients with more than 6 months of post-operative follow-up evaluations were included. The mean improvements in the VAS scores for back pain and leg pain and ODI were 2.0, 3.7, and 26.5 for the UBE group and 1.6, 3.0, and 19.4 for the TMD group. The SF-36 physical health component subscale score improved from 35.4 pre-operatively to 54.8 at the last follow-up in the UBE group, and the mental health score improved from 43.5 to 55.1 (TMD group: from 34.9 to 54.3 and 44.2 to 57.1, respectively). Conclusion The clinical outcomes of the UBE group are comparable to those of the TMD group. The results indicate that UBE for lumbar disc herniation can be performed safely and effectively as a treatment modality.

Abstract This study aimed to elucidate whether low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels differentially affect functional outcomes after intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) depending on prestroke statin use. Patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with IVT were categorized into low, intermediate, and high LDL-C groups based on LDL-C levels at admission ( 130 mg/dl, respectively). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the relationships between LDL-C and clinical outcomes (good outcomes at 3 months, modified Rankin Scale scores 0–2). The interaction between LDL-C levels and prestroke statin use regarding functional outcomes was investigated. Among the 4711 patients (age, 67 ± 12 years; males, 62.1%) who met the eligibility criteria, compared with the high LDL-C group, the low and intermediate LDL-C groups were not associated with good outcomes at 3 months according to the multivariable analysis. A potential interaction between the LDL-C group and prestroke statin use on good outcomes at 3 months was observed (P interaction = 0.07). Among patients with prestroke statin use, low (aOR 1.84 [1.04–3.26]) and intermediate (aOR 2.31 [1.20–4.47]) LDL-C groups were independently associated with a greater likelihood of having a 3-month good outcome. Our study showed that LDL-C was not associated with a 3-month good outcome, but prestroke statin use could modify the influence of LDL-C levels on functional outcomes after IVT.

Abstract The structural stability of medical devices is established by managing stress distribution in response to organ movement. Veins abruptly dilate upon arterial grafting due to the mismatched tissue property, resulting in flow disturbances and consequently stenosis. Vascular cast is designed to wrap the vein‐artery grafts, thereby adjusting the diameter and property mismatches by relying on the elastic fixity. Here, a small bridge connection in the cast structure serves as an essential element to prevent stress concentrations due to the improved elastic fixity. Consequently, the vein dilation is efficiently suppressed, healthy (laminar and helical) flow is induced effectively, and the heathy functions of vein grafting are promoted, as indicated by the flow directional alignment of endothelial cells with arterialization, muscle expansion, and improved contractility. Finally, collaborative effects of the bridge drastically suppress stenosis with patency improvement. As a key technical point, the advantages of the bridge addition are validated via the computational modeling of fluid–structure interaction, followed by a customized ex vivo set‐up and analyses. The calculated effects are verified using a series of cell, rat, and canine models towards translation. The bridge acted like “Little Dutch boy” who saved the big mass using one finger by supporting the cast function.

Robotic systems and the human body consist of numerous joint structures, all of which require precise angle adjustments. At present, encoder, strain gauge, and electrical resistance-based sensors are commonly used for angle measurement. However, these sensors have limitations when used in underwater or in environments with strong electromagnetic waves. Therefore, we have developed an angle sensor based on step-index profile plastic optical fiber (SI-POF), which is cost-effective and highly durable, in this study in order to overcome the limitations of existing angle measurement sensors. To this end, the amount of light loss according to the gab and angle changes that occur when the POF angle sensor is applied to the robot arm was experimentally measured, and based on the results, a simulation of the amount of light loss when the two losses occurred at the same time was conducted. In addition, the performance of the POF angle sensor was evaluated by measuring sensitivity and resolution, and comparative verification with a commonly used encoder was conducted to verify the reliability of sensors in extreme environments, such as those with electromagnetic fields and those that are underwater. Through this, the reliability and practicality of the POF angle sensor were confirmed. The results obtained in this study suggest that POF-based angle sensors can contribute to the development of the biomimetic robot industry as well as ordinary robots, especially in environments where existing sensors are difficult to apply, such as areas with underwater or electromagnetic interference (EMI).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of gait patterns in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) patients according to disease severity. Twenty-two CMT1A patients were enrolled and classified into two groups, according to the disease severity. The healthy control group consisted of 22 subjects with no gait impairment. Full barefoot three-dimensional gait analysis with temporospatial, kinematic, and kinetic data was performed among the mild and moderate CMT1A group and the control group. Minimal hip abduction, maximal hip extension generation, peak knee flexion moment at stance, ankle dorsiflexion at initial contact, maximal ankle plantarflexion at push-off and maximal ankle rotation moment at stance in the CMT1A group showed a significant difference compared to the control group (p < 0.05). In the moderate group, there were greater maximal hip flexion angles in swing, and smaller dorsiflexion angles at initial contact compared to the control group and mild group. CMT patients had typical gait characteristics and their gait patterns were different according to severity. The analysis of gait patterns in patients with CMT1A will help to understand gait function and provide important information for the treatment of patients with CMT in the future.

Antithrombotic therapy is a cornerstone of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) management and secondary stroke prevention. Since the first version of the Korean Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for stroke was issued in 2009, significant progress has been made in antithrombotic therapy for patients with AIS, including dual antiplatelet therapy in acute minor ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic stroke and early oral anticoagulation in AIS with atrial fibrillation. The evidence is widely accepted by stroke experts and has changed clinical practice. Accordingly, the CPG Committee of the Korean Stroke Society (KSS) decided to update the Korean Stroke CPG for antithrombotic therapy for AIS. The writing members of the CPG committee of the KSS reviewed recent evidence, including clinical trials and relevant literature, and revised recommendations. A total of 35 experts were invited from the KSS to reach a consensus on the revised recommendations. The current guideline update aims to assist healthcare providers in making well-informed decisions and improving the quality of acute stroke care. However, the ultimate treatment decision should be made using a holistic approach, considering the specific medical conditions of individual patients.

This paper presents a physics-based analytical channel charge model for indium-rich InxGa1-xAs/In0.52Al0.48As quantum-well (QW) field-effect transistors (FETs) that is applicable from the subthreshold to strong inversion regimes. The model requires only seven physical/geometrical parameters, along with three transition coefficients. In the subthreshold regime, the conduction bands ( $E_{C}$ ) of all regions are flat with finite and symmetrical QW configurations. Since the Fermi–level ( $E_{F}$ ) is located far below $E_{C}$ , the two-dimensional electron-gas density ( $n_{2{-}DEG}$ ) should be minimal and can thus be approximated from Maxwell–Boltzmann statistics. In contrast, the applied gate bias lowers the $E_{C}$ of all structures in the inversion regime, yielding band-bending of an In0.52Al0.48As insulator and InxGa1-xAs QW channel. The dependency of the energy separation between $E_{F}$ and $E_{C}$ on the surface of the InxGa1-xAs QW channel upon $V_{GS}$ enables construction of the charge–voltage behaviors of InxGa1-xAs/In0.52Al0.48As QW FETs. To develop a unified, continuous and differentiable areal channel charge density ( $Q_{ch}$ ) model that is valid from the subthreshold to strong inversion regimes, the previously proposed inversion-layer transition function is further revised with three transition coefficients of $\eta $ , $\alpha $ and $\beta $ in this work. To verify the proposed approach, the results of the proposed model are compared with those of not only the numerically calculated Qch from a one-dimensional (1D) Poisson–Schrödinger solver, but also the measured gate capacitance of a fabricated In0.7Ga0.3As QW metal-insulator-semiconductor FET with large gate length, yielding excellent agreement between the simulated and measured results.

Cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) is an uncommon congenital cardiac anomaly in dogs. This case report describes successful membranectomy for CTD via partial venous inflow occlusion under mild hypothermia in a dog. A 7-month-old intact male mixed-breed dog weighing 20.5 kg presented with a history of abdominal distention, lethargy, and anorexia. Clinical examination, radiography, echocardiography, microbubble testing, and computed tomography revealed a remnant right atrium membrane obscuring the venous blood inflow from the vena cava. Considering the potential risk of re-stenosis following interventional treatment, curative resection involving surgical membranectomy via venous inflow occlusion was performed. By performing partial venous inflow occlusion under mild hypothermia (34.5 °C), sufficient time was obtained to explore the defect and resect the remnant membrane. The dog recovered without any complications, and the clinical signs were relieved. This case illustrates that partial venous inflow occlusion under mild hypothermia is feasible for achieving curative resection of cor triatriatum dexter in dogs.

Several studies in humans have provided detailed descriptions of the anatomy of the pulmonary veins (PVs) and their ostia for the implementation of thoracic interventions, such as radiofrequency ablation, for patients with atrial fibrillation. These studies have shown that electrocardiography (ECG)-gated multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) can evaluate the dimensional variations in the PVs or ostium according to the cardiac cycle. However, few studies have examined the PVs or ostia using MDCT in veterinary medicine. Therefore, this study investigated the variation in the diameter of the PV ostium in cats during the cardiac cycle using ECG-gated MDCT and determined the correlation between the size of the heart or left atrium (LA) and diameter of the PV ostium. This study included six cats, including five normal animals and one cat with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The PVs were found to drain into the LA via three ostia, i.e., the right cranial ostium, left cranial ostium, and caudodorsal ostium. Moreover, a diametric variation was observed in all PV ostia according to the cardiac cycle phase on ECG-gated MDCT: the maximal diameter was observed at the end of ventricular systole, and the minimal diameter was observed at the end of ventricular diastole for each PV ostium. There were no significant correlations between the heart or LA size and maximal or minimal diameter of each of the three PV ostia (p > 0.05); however, the enlargement of each PV ostium at the end of ventricular systole differed significantly from that at the end of ventricular diastole. This study suggested the clinical feasibility of ECG-gated MDCT in providing more detailed anatomical information about the PVs, including the dimensional changes during the cardiac cycle in cats. Based on this study, knowledge of the variations in the PV ostium offers interesting avenues for research into the effect of PV function. Furthermore, ECG-gated MDCT could allow for greater clinical application of interventional procedures in animals with various cardiac diseases.

ObjectivesFew studies have directly compared the clinical feasibility of electrocardiography-gated and non-electrocardiography-gated multidetector computed tomography for evaluating coronary arteries in veterinary medicine. We aimed to characterize and visualize feline coronary arteries using these two imaging modalities. We hypothesed that ECG-gated MDCT is superior to or advantageous to the non-ECG gated.MethodsThis prospective, controlled, comparative pilot study examined six client-owned cats (five clinically normal and one with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) using non-electrocardiography-gated and retrospective electrocardiography-gated scans. Optimal non-electrocardiography scan timing or electrocardiography-gated R-R reconstruction interval for coronary artery visualization was determined. The degree of opacification and sharpness of proximal coronary branches was subjectively graded; coronary dominance, left coronary artery branching types, and the diameter and length of coronary artery branches were also assessed.ResultsNon-electrocardiography-gated images provided the least information on the bilateral coronary artery ostium and proximal segments, while electrocardiography-gated images clarified the detailed course of the main coronary branches at diastole in all cats. The degree of opacification and sharpness of the coronary arteries was subjectively evaluated as good/excellent in all cats. Coronary dominance (left: four; right: two) and left coronary artery branching types (three different patterns, two additional tortuous branches) varied. Body weight and sex were not significantly associated with coronary artery length or diameter. Vertebral heart score positively correlated with the right coronary artery and negatively correlated with the left main coronary artery.Clinical significanceElectrocardiography-gated multidetector computed tomography provides images with adequate resolution to identify the anatomy of feline coronary arteries. Detailed morphological knowledge of feline coronary vessels will enable novel diagnostic and therapeutic methods in veterinary medicine.

Krukovine (KV) is an alkaloid isolated from the bark of Abuta grandifolia (Mart.) Sandw. (Menispermaceae) with anticancer potential in some cancers with KRAS mutations. In this study, we explored the anticancer efficacy and mechanism of KV in oxaliplatin-resistant pancreatic cancer cells and patient-derived pancreatic cancer organoids (PDPCOs) with KRAS mutation. After treatment with KV, mRNA and protein levels were determined by RNA-seq and Western blotting, respectively. Cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were measured by MTT, scratch wound healing assay, and transwell analysis, respectively. Patient-derived pancreatic cancer organoids (PDPCOs) with KRAS mutations were treated with KV, oxaliplatin (OXA), and a combination of KV and OXA. KV suppresses tumor progression via the downregulation of the Erk-RPS6K-TMEM139 and PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathways in oxaliplatin-resistant AsPC-1 cells. Furthermore, KV showed an antiproliferative effect in PDPCOs, and the combination of OXA and KV inhibited PDPCO growth more effectively than either drug alone.

Background: Wearable devices for robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) provide overground gait training for the rehabilitation of neurological injuries. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of RAGT in patients with a neurologic deficit. Methods: Twenty-eight patients receiving more than ten sessions of overground RAGT using a joint-torque-assisting wearable exoskeletal robot were retrospectively analyzed in this study. Nineteen patients with brain injury, seven patients with spinal cord injury and two patients with peripheral nerve injury were included. Clinical outcomes, such as the Medical Research Council scale for muscle strength, Berg balance scale, functional ambulation category, trunk control tests, and Fugl–Meyer motor assessment of the lower extremities, were recorded before and after RAGT. Parameters for RAGT and adverse events were also recorded. Results: The Medical Research Council scale scores for muscle strength (36.6 to 37.8), Berg balance scale (24.9 to 32.2), and functional ambulation category (1.8 to 2.7) significantly improved after overground RAGT (p < 0.05). The familiarization process was completed within six sessions of RAGT. Only two mild adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Overground RAGT using wearable devices can improve muscle strength, balance, and gait function. It is safe in patients with neurologic injury.

Sperm cryopreservation is an important method of assisted reproductive techniques and storing genetic resources. It plays a vital role in genetic improvement, livestock industrial preservation of endangered species, and clinical practice. Consequently, the cryopreservation technique is well organized through various studies, especially on Korean native cattle (Hanwoo). However, the cryopreservation technique of Korean native brindled cattle, which is one of the native cattle species in Korea, is not well organized. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a Supplementary Table technique for the cryopreservation of Korean native brindled cattle. For this purpose, it is important to first evaluate the quality of the currently produced cryopreserved sperm of Korean native brindled cattle. In this study, we randomly selected 72 individual Korean native brindled cattle semen samples collected from 8 different region research centers and used them to evaluate sperm functions. We focused on the quality evaluation of cryopreserved Korean native brindled cattle semen following the measurement of motion kinematics, capacitation status, intracellular ATP level, sperm motility, and cell viability. Then, the values of each of the eight groups were derived from various sperm parameters of nine individual samples, including sperm motility, kinematics, cellular motility, and intracellular ATP levels, which were used to compare and evaluate sperm function. Overall, differences in various sperm parameters were observed between most of the research centers. Particularly, the deviations of motility and motion kinematics were high according to the sample. Therefore, we suggest that it is necessary to develop a standard method for the cryopreservation of Korean native brindled cattle semen. We also suggest the need for sperm quality evaluation of the cryopreserved semen of Korean native brindled cattle before using artificial insemination to attain a high fertility rate.

Background Prehospital delay is an important contributor to poor outcomes in both acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to compare the prehospital delay and related factors between AIS and AMI. Methods and Results We identified patients with AIS and AMI who were admitted to the 11 Korean Regional Cardiocerebrovascular Centers via the emergency room between July 2016 and December 2018. Delayed arrival was defined as a prehospital delay of >3 hours, and the generalized linear mixed‐effects model was applied to explore the effects of potential predictors on delayed arrival. This study included 17 895 and 8322 patients with AIS and AMI, respectively. The median value of prehospital delay was 6.05 hours in AIS and 3.00 hours in AMI. The use of emergency medical services was the key determinant of delayed arrival in both groups. Previous history, 1‐person household, weekday presentation, and interhospital transfer had higher odds of delayed arrival in both groups. Age and sex had no or minimal effects on delayed arrival in AIS; however, age and female sex were associated with higher odds of delayed arrival in AMI. More severe symptoms had lower odds of delayed arrival in AIS, whereas no significant effect was observed in AMI. Off‐hour presentation had higher and prehospital awareness had lower odds of delayed arrival; however, the magnitude of their effects differed quantitatively between AIS and AMI. Conclusions The effects of some nonmodifiable and modifiable factors on prehospital delay differed between AIS and AMI. A differentiated strategy might be required to reduce prehospital delay.

Background Previous literature about the effect of heart rate on poststroke outcomes is limited. We attempted to elucidate (1) whether heart rate during the acute period of ischemic stroke predicts subsequent major clinical events, (2) which heart rate parameter is best for prediction, and (3) what is the estimated heart rate cutoff point for the primary outcome. Methods and Results Eight thousand thirty‐one patients with acute ischemic stroke who were hospitalized within 48 hours of onset were analyzed retrospectively. We investigated the impact of a sulfur passivation (S-passivation) process step on carrier transport properties of surface-channel In0.7Ga0.3As quantum-well (QW) Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect-Transistors (MOSFETs) with source/drain (S/D) regrowth contacts. To do so, we fabricated long-channel In0.7Ga0.3As QW MOSFETs with and without (NH4)2S treatment prior to a deposition of Al2O3/HfO2 = 1-nm/3-nm by atomic-layer-deposition (ALD). The devices with S-passivation exhibited a lower value of subthreshold-swing (S) = 74 mV/decade and more positive shift in the threshold voltage ( $\text{V}_{\mathrm{ T}}$ ) than those without S-passivation. From the perspective of carrier transport, S-passivated devices displayed excellent effective mobility ( $\mu _{eff}$ ) in excess of 6,300 cm2/ $\text{V}\cdot \text{s}$ at 300 K. It turned out that the improvement of $\mu _{eff}$ was attributed to reduced Coulombic and surface-roughness scatterings. Using a conductance method, a fairly small value of interface trap density $({\mathrm{ D}}_{\mathrm{ it}}) = 1.56 \times 10^{12}$ cm $^{-2}$ eV $^{-1}$ was obtained for the devices with S-passivation, which was effective in mitigating the Coulombic scattering at the interface between the high-k dielectric layer and the In0.7Ga0.3As surface-channel layer.

Abstract We investigated a multicenter registry to identify estimated event rates according to CHA2DS2-VASc scores in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and atrial fibrillation (AF). The additional effectiveness of antiplatelets (APs) plus oral anticoagulants (OACs) compared with OACs alone considering the CHA2DS2-VASc scores was also explored. This study retrospectively analyzed a multicenter stroke registry between Jan 2011 and Nov 2017, identifying patients with acute ischemic stroke with AF. The primary outcome event was a composite of recurrent stroke, myocardial infarction, and all-cause mortality within 1 year. A total of 7395 patients (age, 73 ± 10 years; men, 54.2%) were analyzed. The primary outcome events at one year ranged from 5.99% (95% CI 3.21–8.77) for a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 0 points to 30.45% (95% CI 24.93–35.97) for 7 or more points. After adjustments for covariates, 1-point increases in the CHA2DS2-VASc score consistently increased the risk of primary outcome events (aHR 1.10 [1.06–1.15]) at 1-year. Among OAC-treated patients at discharge (n = 5500), those treated with OAC + AP (vs. OAC alone) were more likely to experience vascular events, though among patients with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 5 or higher, the risk of primary outcome in the OAC + AP group was comparable to that in the OAC alone group (Pint = 0.01). Our study found that there were significant associations of increasing CHA2DS2-VASc scores with the increasing risk of vascular events at 1-year in AIS with AF. Further study would be warranted.

Sulfide-based solid electrolytes exhibit good formability and superior ionic conductivity. However, these electrolytes can react with atmospheric moisture to generate H2S gas, resulting in performance degradation. In this study, we attempted to improve the stability of the interface between Li metal and an argyrodite Li6Ps5Cl solid electrolyte by partially substituting P with Sn to form an Sn–S bond. The solid electrolyte was synthesized via liquid synthesis instead of the conventional mechanical milling method. X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed that solid electrolytes have an argyrodite structure and peak shift occurs as substitution increases. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses confirmed that the particle size gradually increased, and the components were evenly distributed. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and DC cycling confirmed that the ionic conductivity decreased slightly but that the cycling behavior was stable for about 500 h at X = 0.05. The amount of H2S gas generated when the solid electrolyte is exposed to moisture was measured using a gas sensor. Stability against atmospheric moisture was improved. In conclusion, liquid-phase synthesis could be applied for the large-scale production of argyrodite-based Li6PS5Cl solid electrolytes. Moreover, Sn substitution improved the electrochemical stability of the solid electrolyte.

We present a fully analytical model and physical investigation on the source resistance (RS) in InxGa1−xAs quantum-well high-electron mobility transistors based on a three-layer TLM system. The RS model in this work was derived by solving the coupled quadratic differential equations for each current component with appropriate boundary conditions, requiring only six physical and geometrical parameters, including ohmic contact resistivity (ρc), barrier tunneling resistivity (ρbarrier), sheet resistances of the cap and channel regions (Rsh_cap and Rsh_ch), side-recessed length (Lside) and gate-to-source length (Lgs). To extract each model parameter, we fabricated two different TLM structures, such as cap-TLM and recessed-TLM. The developed RS model in this work was in excellent agreement with the RS values measured from the two TLM devices and previously reported short-Lg HEMT devices. The findings in this work revealed that barrier tunneling resistivity already played a critical role in reducing the value of RS in state-of-the-art HEMTs. Unless the barrier tunneling resistivity is reduced considerably, innovative engineering on the ohmic contact characteristics and gate-to-source spacing would only marginally improve the device performance.

Background Although the effect of blood pressure on poststroke outcome is well recognized, the long‐term trajectory of blood pressure after acute ischemic stroke and its influence on outcomes have not been studied well. Methods and Results We analyzed systolic blood pressure (SBP) measurements in 5514 patients with acute ischemic stroke at ≥2 of 7 prespecified time points during the first year after stroke among those enrolled in a multicenter prospective registry. Longitudinal SBPs were categorized using a group‐based trajectory model. The primary outcome was a composite of stroke recurrence, myocardial infarction, and all‐cause mortality up to 1 year after stroke. The study subjects were categorized into 4 SBP trajectory groups: low (27.0%), moderate (59.5%), persistently high (1.2%), and slowly dropping (12.4%). In the first 3 groups, SBP decreased during the first 3 to 7 days and remained steady thereafter. In the slowly dropping SBP group, SBPs decreased from 182 to 135 mm Hg during the first 30 days, then paralleled the trajectory of the moderate SBP group. Compared with the reference, the moderate SBP group, the slowly dropping SBP group was at higher risk for the primary outcome (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.32; 95% CI, 1.05‒1.65) and mortality (adjusted HR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.03‒1.78). Primary outcome rates were similarly high in the persistently high SBP group. Conclusions Four 1‐year longitudinal SBP trajectories were identified in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Patients in the slowly dropping SBP and persistently high SBP trajectory groups were prone to adverse cardiovascular outcomes after stroke.

BackgroundPreclinical data suggest circadian variation in ischemic stroke progression, with more active cell death and infarct growth in rodent models with inactive phase (daytime) than active phase (nighttime) stroke onset. We aimed to examine the association of stroke onset time with presenting severity, early neurological deterioration (END), and long-term functional outcome in human ischemic stroke.Methods and findingsIn a Korean nationwide multicenter observational cohort study from May 2011 to July 2020, we assessed circadian effects on initial stroke severity (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] score at admission), END, and favorable functional outcome (3-month modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score 0 to 2 versus 3 to 6). We included 17,461 consecutive patients with witnessed ischemic stroke within 6 hours of onset. Stroke onset time was divided into 2 groups (day-onset [06:00 to 18:00] versus night-onset [18:00 to 06:00]) and into 6 groups by 4-hour intervals. We used mixed-effects ordered or logistic regression models while accounting for clustering by hospitals. Mean age was 66.9 (SD 13.4) years, and 6,900 (39.5%) were women. END occurred in 2,219 (12.7%) patients. After adjusting for covariates including age, sex, previous stroke, prestroke mRS score, admission NIHSS score, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, smoking, atrial fibrillation, prestroke antiplatelet use, prestroke statin use, revascularization, season of stroke onset, and time from onset to hospital arrival, night-onset stroke was more prone to END (adjusted incidence 14.4% versus 12.8%, p = 0.006) and had a lower likelihood of favorable outcome (adjusted odds ratio, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.79 to 0.98]; p = 0.03) compared with day-onset stroke. When stroke onset times were grouped by 4-hour intervals, a monotonic gradient in presenting NIHSS score was noted, rising from a nadir in 06:00 to 10:00 to a peak in 02:00 to 06:00. The 18:00 to 22:00 and 22:00 to 02:00 onset stroke patients were more likely to experience END than the 06:00 to 10:00 onset stroke patients. At 3 months, there was a monotonic gradient in the rate of favorable functional outcome, falling from a peak at 06:00 to 10:00 to a nadir at 22:00 to 02:00. Study limitations include the lack of information on sleep disorders and patient work/activity schedules.ConclusionsNight-onset strokes, compared with day-onset strokes, are associated with higher presenting neurologic severity, more frequent END, and worse 3-month functional outcome. These findings suggest that circadian time of onset is an important additional variable for inclusion in epidemiologic natural history studies and in treatment trials of neuroprotective and reperfusion agents for acute ischemic stroke.

When a current of ~300 A flows through a contact line that supplies power to a high-speed train traveling at maximum speed, it forms a strong magnetic field. Magnetometers - sensors that measure magnetic fields - are affected by this magnetic field around the contact line. In this study, the magnetic field formed around a contact line was measured and its effect on magnetometers was indicated. In order to confirm the degree of influence of such fields on a magnetometer, a magnetic field around a contact line was measured and simulated. For a high-speed train traveling at 300 km/h, the magnetic field was measured at 14.1 μT, 3 m away from the contact line. In addition, a magnetic field was formed when a current of 300 A flowing through the contact line was simulated in a laboratory environment. The outcome of the simulation was then compared with the measured values. This study experimentally verified the measurement error of the magnetometer caused by the contact line and confirmed that a filter can be used to reduce the error.

We investigated the effects of quantum confinement in determining the interface traps (Dit) and border traps (Nbt) of ALD deposited Al2O3 with temperature variations onto InxGa1-xAs on a 300-mm Si (001) substrate. We also analysed the impact of these effects on the total gate capacitance of high-k/Si and high-k/InxGa1-xAs structures using 1D Poisson-Schrodinger solver simulation tool (Nextnano). While quantum confinement has no or very little impact on the gate capacitance of high-k/Si structure, it has a considerably high amount of impact on the high-k/InxGa1-xAs structures and substantially lowers the total gate capacitance. To reflect the actual thickness between the insulator-semiconductor interface and charge centroid, capacitance-equivalent-thickness was used to reflect the effects of quantum confinement in the InxGa1-xAs layer. The Dit and Nbt values extracted using capacitance-equivalent-thickness were observed to be around 10% and 25%, respectively, higher than the values of extraction with equivalent-oxide-thickness.

Restoration of blood flow to damaged sites has commonly involved treatment with pro-angiogenic molecules but these have undesired side effects. Here the authors present a microchannel-patterned gelatin hydrogel that is able to rescue mouse and porcine models of hindlimb ischemia.

Background It is unclear whether women diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) have worse outcome after adjusting for several confounding factors such as age, initial stroke severity, and risk factors. In this study, we investigated sex disparities in long-term functional outcome after AIS. Methods We recruited patients with AIS prospectively registered in the Clinical Research Collaboration for Stroke in Korea database of Dong-A University Stroke Center between 2015 and 2018. We reviewed the patients’ clinical demographics, living type (alone or cohabitating), laboratory and radiological findings, stroke severity, stroke subtype, and cardiovascular risk profile. We compared the long-term functional outcomes between men and women using the modified Rankin Scale score at 90 days and 1 year after AIS. Results A total of 2,711 patients with AIS were enrolled in this study. Women comprised 38.9% (1,055) of all participants. Surgical ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus is regarded as a standard treatment approach with a low complication rate if performed by experienced surgeons, and it has been performed successfully for decades in dogs. However, there are no reports describing the clinical symptoms related to granulomatous inflammation after the surgical ligation of the patent ductus arteriosus. This report describes the clinical symptoms caused by granulomatous inflammation and subacute pericarditis in a dog that had undergone the surgical closure of a patent ductus arteriosus 2 years previously. Exploratory thoracotomy was performed for subtotal pericardiectomy, and a biopsy was performed to obtain specimens for histopathological examination and culture tests. The clinical symptoms were relieved after surgery. The persistent leukocytosis improved with steroid administration. This case illustrates that the granulomatous inflammatory response associated with silk suture granuloma is a rare postoperative complication of ductal ligation. In such cases, pericardiectomy can help relieve the clinical symptoms.

We presented an explicit empirical model of the thermal resistance of AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors on three distinct substrates, including sapphire, SiC, and Si. This model considered both a linear and non-linear thermal resistance model of AlGaN/GaN HEMT, the thickness of the host substrate layers, and the gate length and width. The non-linear nature of channel temperature—visible at the high-power dissipation stage—along with linear dependency, was constructed within a single equation. Comparisons with the channel temperature measurement procedure (DC) and charge-control-based device modeling were performed to verify the model’s validity, and the results were in favorable agreement with the observed model data, with only a 1.5% error rate compared to the measurement data. An agile expression for the channel temperature is also important for designing power devices and monolithic microwave integrated circuits. The suggested approach provides several techniques for investigation that could otherwise be impractical or unattainable when utilizing time-consuming numerical simulations.

We propose an efficient alignment method for liquid crystals (LCs). A brush-coating method handles film deposition and LC alignment treatment simultaneously herein, meaning a reduction in the conventional alignment layer treatment process steps. A lanthanum yttrium strontium oxide (LaYSrO) film prepared by the sol–gel process was used for the alignment layer. Topographical details of the brush-coated LaYSrO films (compared with spin-coated films) were investigated by atomic force microscopy. Spin-coated LaYSrO meant that the film formation alone without orientation treatment represented an isotropic surface. On the other hand, the 270 °C-cured brush-coated LaYSrO showed nano/microstructure with directionality. It indicates that brush-hair sweeping induced shearing stress on the sol state of the LaYSrO, which results in surface anisotropy for LC alignment. The uniform LC alignment state was confirmed by polarized optical microscopy and pretilt analysis. The brush-coated LaYSrO shows fine optical transparency compared to plain and indium-tin-oxide coated glasses, and thermal stability up to 150 °C for LC alignment. Competitive electro-optical performances of the brush-coated LaYSrO were verified in a twisted-nematic LC system compared to those of the conventionally used polyimide layer. Consequently, we expect that the brush-coating process can be an innovative technology for LC alignment.

Background: Although chest radiographs have not been utilised well for classifying stroke subtypes, they could provide a plethora of information on cardioembolic stroke.This study aimed to develop a deep convolutional neural network that could diagnose cardioembolic stroke based on chest radiographs.Methods: Overall, 4,064 chest radiographs of consecutive patients with acute ischaemic stroke were collected from a prospectively maintained stroke registry. Chest radiographs were randomly partitioned into training/validation (n = 3,255) and internal test (n = 809) datasets in an 8:2 ratio. A densely connected convolutional network (ASTRO-X) was trained to diagnose cardioembolic stroke based on chest radiographs. The performance of ASTRO-X was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Gradient-weighted class activation mapping was used to evaluate the region of focus of ASTRO-X. External testing was performed with 750 chest radiographs of patients with acute ischaemic stroke from 7 hospitals.Findings: The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of ASTRO-X were 0.86 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83–0.89) and 0.82 (95% CI, 0.79–0.85) during the internal and multicentre external testing, respectively. The gradient-weighted class activation map demonstrated that ASTRO-X was focused on the area where the left atrium was located. Compared with cases predicted as non-cardioembolism by ASTRO-X, cases predicted as cardioembolism by ASTRO-X had higher left atrial volume index and lower left ventricular ejection fraction in echocardiography.Interpretation: ASTRO-X, a deep neural network developed to diagnose cardioembolic stroke based on chest radiographs, demonstrated good classification performance and biological plausibility.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetization transfer (MT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help detect spinal cord pathology, and tract-specific analysis of their parameters, such as fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD) and MT ratio (MTR), can give microstructural information. We performed the tract-based acquisition of MR parameters of three major motor tracts: the lateral corticospinal (CS), rubrospinal (RuS) tract, and lateral reticulospinal (RS) tract as well as two major sensory tracts, i.e., the fasciculus cuneatus (FC) and spinal lemniscus, to detect pathologic change and find correlations with clinical items. MR parameters were extracted for each tract at three levels: the most compressed lesion level and above and below the lesion. We compared the MR parameters of eight cervical spondylotic myelopathy patients and 12 normal controls and analyzed the correlation between clinical evaluation items and MR parameters in patients. RuS and lateral RS showed worse DTI parameters at the lesion level in patients compared to the controls. Worse DTI parameters in those tracts were correlated with weaker power grasp at the lesion level. FC and lateral CS showed a correlation between higher RD and lower FA and MTR with a weaker lateral pinch below the lesion level.

Although smart farms are considered an alternative to traditional agriculture, they require large amounts of energy and high investment costs, hindering their efficient implementation. In the Republic of Korea, the energy supply is primarily for heating rather than cooling, necessitating the accurate prediction of the greenhouse internal temperature to determine the feasibility of agricultural management while using renewable energy. This study developed a model (TRNSYS) for predicting the internal temperature of a greenhouse using building energy simulation. A greenhouse heating experiment was conducted using a hybrid heating system simulated by TRNSYS to analyze the prediction model. The regression analysis of the experimental and simulation results revealed an R2 and RMSE of 0.8834 and 3.61, respectively. A comparative analysis was conducted with the existing hot air heating system to evaluate the heating performance and economic feasibility of the hybrid system. Overall, the heating performance exhibited satisfactory results, whereas the economic analysis, based on life cycle cost, revealed a cost reduction effect of 9.45%. Hence, greenhouse heating using renewable energy can replace conventional fossil fuels with economic advantages. Moreover, the prediction of the internal temperature of the greenhouse will facilitate the design of a systematic smart farm business to prevent duplicate investment.

We investigated the effect of phase separation on the Schottky barrier height (SBH) of InAlAs layers grown by metal–organic chemical vapor deposition. The phase separation into the In-rich InAlAs column and Al-rich InAlAs column of In0.52Al0.48As layers was observed when we grew them at a relatively low temperature of below 600 °C. From the photoluminescence spectrum investigation, we found that the band-gap energy decreased from 1.48 eV for a homogeneous In0.52Al0.48As sample to 1.19 eV for a phase-separated InxAl1−xAs sample due to the band-gap lowering effect by In-rich InxAl1−xAs (x > 0.7) region. From the current density–voltage analysis of the InAlAs Schottky diode, it was confirmed that the phase-separated InAlAs layers showed a lower SBH value of about 240 meV than for the normal InAlAs layers. The reduction in SBH arising from the phase separation of InAlAs layers resulted in the larger leakage current in InAlAs Schottky diodes.
