- Abstract
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7° orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A total of 2.86×106 helium nuclei were observed in the rigidity range 1 to 140 GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of <1.1×10−6 is obtained.

Space-time fractional diffusion in a linear, bounded region is considered. An analytical expression for the pressure distribution in the bounded region is derived in terms of the Mittag-Leffler function and the Laplace transformation. Comparisons with numerical solutions indicate excellent agreement. A convenient expression that incorporates a combination of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, particularly suitable for rapid computations, has been elusive until now. Responses that may be expected in nanoporous reservoirs that are usually produced through horizontal wells containing multiple hydraulic fractures are deduced. It is shown that the existence of obstacles, discontinuities, and other complex flow paths in fractured reservoirs express themselves in the form of power-law declines, whereas long-range interactions reflective of rapid communication, interestingly, express themselves as exponential declines. An understanding of the simultaneous influences of these two effects is the purpose of this study. The application to the "trilinear" model often used to evaluate well performance in shales is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The CPLEAR experiment at CERN uses time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries between K-0 and (K) over bar(0) to measure eta(+-). The analysis and the systematic errors are discussed. The preliminary results from all our data are phi(+-) = 43.5 degrees +/- 0.5(stat)degrees +/- 0.5(syst)+/-0.4(Delta m) and \eta(+-)\ = (2.316 +/- 0.025(stat) +/- 0.028(syst) +/- 0.009(tau S)) x 10(-3). The dominant part in the systematic error of phi(+-) is due to the regeneration correction. A dedicated experiment was performed to reduce this error considerably. Nuclear Physics B

- Abstract
The CPLEAR experiment measured time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries of K-0 and (K) over bar(0) decaying to pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) in order to study the interference between the decay amplitudes of K-S(0) - either CP-violating or CP-conserving - and the CP-conserving K-L(0) decay amplitude. From the analysis of the complete data set we find for the CP-violating parameter eta(+-0), Re((+-0)) = (-2 +/- 7 stat. (+4)(-1) syst.) x 10(-3), Im(eta(+-0)) = (-2 +/- 9 stat. (+2)(-1) syst.) x 10(-3) and for the CP-conserving parameter lambda, Re(lambda) = (+28 +/- 7 stat. +/-3 syst.) x 10(-3), Im(lambda) = (-10 +/- 8 stat. +/- 2 syst.) x 10(-3). From the latter, the branching ratio of the CP-conserving (KS)-S-0 --> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) decay is deduced to be B = (2.5(-1.0)(+1.3) stat. (+0.5)(-0.6) systs.) x 10(-7). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V. - Abstract
The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using K-0 and produced by the annihilation of in a hydrogen gas target. The K-0 and are identified by their companion products of the annihilation K(+/-)pi(-/+) which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the subdetectors are described. - Abstract
CP violation has been observed as a time-dependent rate asymmetry between the decays --> pi(0) pi(0) and K-0 --> pi(0) pi(0), where the neutral kaons are produced with definite and individually known strangeness in --> K(+)pi(-) or --> K(0)K(-)pi(+). A special technique for the data analysis has been developed. The values obtained for phi(00) and \eta(00)\ are in agreement with those of previous measurements of CP violation. - Abstract
The CPLEAR experiment at CERN studies the CP, T and CPT symmetries in the neutral-kaon system by measuring the rate asymmetries between the decays of initially pure K-0 and (K-0) over bar states. Using data taken between 1900 and mid 1994, precise measurements of \eta(+ -)\, phi(+ -) and Delta m are reported. The comparison of phi(+ -) with the superweak phase gives one of the most sensitive tests of CPT invariance and leads to a new limit on the K-0-(K-0) over bar mass difference. The CPLEAR experiment at CERN studies CP, T, and CPT symmetries in the neutral-kaon system by measuring the time-dependent decay rate asymmetries of initially pure K-0 and states. Results on eta(+-), eta(+-0), Delta m, and x are reported. as well as on the first direct test of T violation and CPT invariance in K-0- oscillations. Our results are consistent with CPT invariance and allow for an improved limit on the K-0- mass difference. Physics of Atomic Nuclei

- Abstract
The best estimation of phi+- (the phase of the CP violation parameter eta+-) and of Delta m (the K-L - K-S mass difference) is obtained by averaging the results of different experiments, taking into account the different correlation, existing for most of the experiments, between the measurement of phi+- and hm. Including the recent measurements, we obtain the average values (Delta m) = (530.7 +/- 1.3) x 10(7) and (phi+-) = 43.82 degrees +/- 0.63 degrees. This value of phi+- is in good agreement with the superweak phase phi(SW) = 43.49 degrees +/- 0.08 degrees. Physics Letters B

- Abstract
Antiproton annihilation at rest in gaseous hydrogen (16 bar pressure) to the final states rho(770)X and f(2)(1270)X, where X stands for one or more neutral mesons, has been studied at LEAR using the CPLEAR detector. Relative branching ratios are given for X = pi(0), 2 pi(0), 3 pi(0), w in the rho case,and for X = pi(0), eta in the f(2) case. The annihilation channel (p) over bar p --> rho 3 pi(0) has not been measured before. The fraction of P-wave annihilation is deduced from the ratio f(2) pi(0)/rho pi(0) to be 0.38 +/- 0.07, in good agreement with the result previously obtained by CPLEAR from the ratio K+K-/pi(+)pi(-). - Abstract
Two-charged-pion correlations were studied in ppBAR (--> 2pi+2pi-npi0, n greater-than-or-equal-to 0) annihilations at rest with the CPLEAR detector at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions with a small value of the relative four-momentum Q, with respect to pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed enhancement was interpreted as a consequence of the Bose-Einstein symmetrization of the two-pion wave function. The data are well represented by a correlation function parametrized as a double-Gaussian; an exponential parametrization is also statistically acceptable. The value of the correlation strength is found to be > 1. The high-quality large data samples together with the ability for K+/- identification and final-state separation allowed the study of systematic effects impacting on the Q dependence of the correlation function and on the extracted space parameters of the pion sources. - Abstract
Bose-Einstein (BE) correlations between like-sign charged pions were studied in ppBAR annihilations at rest into four-prong events, using data taken with the CPLEAR detector at LEAR (CERN). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions of similar momenta, with respect to the pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed BE-enhancement was used to extract the values for the strength lambda of the effect and the radius r of the pion emitting source. The extracted value of lambda>1 is of relevant importance and clearly does not depend on the assumed parametrization of the correlation function. The influence of the normalization and fitting procedure, the detector resolution, the resonances production and decay and the neutral-pion multiplicity cuts, on the size of the pion source and the strength of the effect was investigated. - Abstract
We report the first determination of CP violation parameters from particle-antiparticle asymmetry in the decay of neutral kaons into two charged pions. Observation of such an asymmetry is direct proof of CP violation. A fit to the asymmetry enabled a determination of the parameter-eta+- to be made, yielding the result \eta+-\ = [2.32 +/- 0.14 (stat. ) +/- 0.03 (syst.)] X 10(-3) and phi+- = 42.3-degrees +/- 4.4-degrees (stat.) +/- 0.4-degrees (syst. ), with an additional uncertainty of +/-1.0-degrees due to the error on the present published value of DELTA-m, the K(L)0-K(S)0 mass difference. The magnitudes of both statistical and systematic errors will be significantly reduced in the future. Physics Letters B

The article presents a study on semi-infinite-spatial-domain wave equation modeling of the real-world problem of longitudinal waves propagating along a slender, homogeneous elastic rod-pump gas wells of finite length. It found that precision of the downhole-pump card can be increased by improving the accuracy of the friction law in the wave equation. The authors also discussed the Gibb's theorem and illustrated its validity with an existing well. It is noted that the supposition of validity comes from Gibb's conjecture, which states that downhole conditions can be derived from surface measurements if a correct law of rod friction is known.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7 degree orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A total of 2.86 * 10^6 helium nuclei were observed in the rigidity range 1 to 140 GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1 * 10^-6 is obtained., 18 pages, Latex, 9 .eps figures
