Specific heat studies of the Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Mn$_{1-y}$Ti$_y$O$_3$ polycrystalline samples performed by the relaxation and DSC methods over the temperature range 2 - 450 K are reported. Anomalies accompanying the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic and ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transitions were measured and analyzed. The system studied is a promising multiferroic material of the 2$^{\text {nd}}$ type, in which a strong coupling between the magnetic and electric systems can be related to the fact that the same Mn$^{4+}$ ions are responsible for the two orderings. Analysis of the anomaly at the magnetic transition was done by using the advanced theory of the continuous transitions, in which the presence of higher order terms in the free energy is considered, and the parameters of the critical behavior of the system were estimated. It was found that, despite of earlier predictions, the transition loses the continuous character and can become the 1$^{\text {st}}$ order process for the Ti-containing samples. The anomalies accompanying the 1$^{\text{st}}$ order high-temperature ferroelectric transition were found to be hardly visible by using both techniques, which was ascribed to a wide temperature range of coexistence of the dielectric and ferroelectric phases., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Pys. Type II radio bursts are evidence of shocks in the solar atmosphere and inner heliosphere that emit radio waves ranging from sub-meter to kilometer lengths. These shocks may be associated with CMEs and reach speeds higher than the local magnetosonic speed. Radio imaging of decameter wavelengths (20-90 MHz) is now possible with LOFAR, opening a new radio window in which to study coronal shocks that leave the inner solar corona and enter the interplanetary medium and to understand their association with CMEs. To this end, we study a coronal shock associated with a CME and type II radio burst to determine the locations at which the radio emission is generated, and we investigate the origin of the band-splitting phenomenon., Comment: 7 Figures, 9 Pages

The quiet solar corona emits meter-wave thermal bremsstrahlung. Coronal radio emission can only propagate above that radius, $R_\omega$, where the local plasma frequency eqals the observing frequency. The radio interferometer LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observes in its low band (10 -- 90 MHz) solar radio emission originating from the middle and upper corona. We present the first solar aperture synthesis imaging observations in the low band of LOFAR in 12 frequencies each separated by 5 MHz. From each of these radio maps we infer $R_\omega$, and a scale height temperature, $T$. These results can be combined into coronal density and temperature profiles. We derived radial intensity profiles from the radio images. We focus on polar directions with simpler, radial magnetic field structure. Intensity profiles were modeled by ray-tracing simulations, following wave paths through the refractive solar corona, and including free-free emission and absorption. We fitted model profiles to observations with $R_\omega$ and $T$ as fitting parameters. In the low corona, $R_\omega < 1.5$ solar radii, we find high scale height temperatures up to 2.2e6 K, much more than the brightness temperatures usually found there. But if all $R_\omega$ values are combined into a density profile, this profile can be fitted by a hydrostatic model with the same temperature, thereby confirming this with two independent methods. The density profile deviates from the hydrostatic model above 1.5 solar radii, indicating the transition into the solar wind. These results demonstrate what information can be gleaned from solar low-frequency radio images. The scale height temperatures we find are not only higher than brightness temperatures, but also than temperatures derived from coronograph or EUV data. Future observations will provide continuous frequency coverage, eliminating the need for local hydrostatic density models.

Resonant soft X-ray scattering was used to determine the presence of more subtle orderings not detected in standard structural analyses. By tuning to specific Co absorption edges, arrangements particular to the electronic states of those elements are enhanced. We have discovered an ordering commensurate to the lattice at the ($\frac{1}{4}~\frac{1}{4}~\frac{1}{4}$) position. Incommensurate peaks near this position were also observed. The intensity of these peaks depends on the oxygen concentration of the sample, and can be suppressed at temperatures above 320 K. Regular orderings of charge density which closely match the underlying lattice may help to explain the observed propensity for SrCoO$_{3-y}$ (0 $\leq$ y $\leq\frac{1}{2}$) to stabilize at particular phases., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Two magnetic phase transitions have been noted for SrCoO$_{3-y}$ for near-stoichiometric oxygen concentrations (small y). Using muon spin rotation and neutron scattering experiments, we have established that the two transitions represent separate, spatially distinct magnetic phases that coexist in a two-phase equilibrium mixture. The two phases most likely represent areas of the sample with different effective valence charge density. Further, the phases exist over regions with a length scale intermediate between nanoscale charge inhomogeneity and systems such as manganites or super-oxygenated cuprates with large length scale phase separation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The normal state in the hole underdoped copper oxide superconductors has proven to be a source of mystery for decades. The measurement of a small Fermi surface by quantum oscillations on suppression of superconductivity by high applied magnetic fields, together with complementary spectroscopic measurements in the hole underdoped copper oxide superconductors, point to a nodal electron pocket from charge order in YBa2Cu3O6+x. Here we report quantum oscillation measurements in the closely related stoichiometric material YBa2Cu4O8, which reveal similar Fermi surface properties to YBa2Cu3O6+x, despite an absence of charge order signatures in the same spectroscopic techniques such as x-ray diffraction that revealed signatures of charge order in YBa2Cu3O6+x. Fermi surface reconstruction in YBa2Cu4O8 is suggested to occur from magnetic field enhancement of charge order that is rendered fragile in zero magnetic fields because of its potential unconventional symmetry, and/or its occurrence as a subsidiary to more robust underlying electronic correlations., Comment: in PNAS online July 21, 2015

A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz. Using pulsed laser deposition and a unique fast quenching method, we have prepared SrCoOx epitaxial films on SiTiO3 substrates. As electrochemical oxidation increases the oxygen content from x = 2.75 to 3.0, the films tend to favor the discrete magnetic phases seen in bulk samples for the homologous series SrCoO(3-n/8) (n = 0, 1, 2). Unlike bulk samples, 200nm thick films remain single phase throughout the oxidation cycle. 300 nm films can show two simultaneous phases during deoxidation. These results are attributed to finite thickness effects and imply the formation of ordered regions larger than approximately 300 nm., Comment: The following article has been submitted to Applied Physics Letters. Using resonant X-ray spectroscopies combined with density functional calculations, we find an asymmetric bi-axial strain-induced $d$-orbital response in ultra-thin films of the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$ which are not accessible in the bulk. The sign of the misfit strain governs the stability of an octahedral "breathing" distortion, which, in turn, produces an emergent charge-ordered ground state with an altered ligand-hole density and bond covalency. Control of this new mechanism opens a pathway to rational orbital engineering, providing a platform for artificially designed Mott materials.

We have synthesized epitaxial NdNiO$_{3}$ ultra-thin films in a layer-by-layer growth mode under tensile and compressive strain on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) and LaAlO$_3$ (001), respectively. A combination of X-ray diffraction, temperature dependent resistivity, and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been applied to elucidate electronic and structural properties of the samples. In contrast to the bulk NdNiO$_{3}$, the metal-insulator transition under compressive strain is found to be completely quenched, while the transition remains under the tensile strain albeit modified from the bulk behavior., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We combine the results of magnetic and transport measurements with neutron diffraction data to construct the structural and magnetic phase diagram of the entire family of SrMn$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$O$_3$ ($0 \leqslant x \leqslant 1$) perovskites. We have found antiferromagnetic ordering of the C type for lightly Ru-substituted materials ($0.06 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.5$) in a similar manner to $R_{y}$Sr$_{1-y}$MnO$_3$ ($R$=La, Pr), due to the generation of Mn$^{3+}$ in both families of manganite perovskites by either $B$-site substitution of Ru$^{5+}$ for Mn$^{4+}$ or $A$-site substitution of $R^{3+}$ for Sr$^{2+}$. This similarity is driven by the same ratio of $d^4$ / $d^3$ ions in both classes of materials for equivalent substitution level. In both cases, a tetragonal lattice distortion is observed, which for some compositions ($0.06 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.2$) is coupled to a C-type AF transition and results in a first order magnetic and resistive transition. Heavily substituted SrMn$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$O$_3$ materials are ferromagnetic due to dominating exchange interactions between the Ru$^{4+}$ ions. Intermediate substitution ($0.6 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.7$) leads to a spin-glass behavior instead of a quantum critical point reported previously in single crystals, due to enhanced disorder., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

We report the observation of quantum oscillations in the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 using a tunnel-diode oscillator technique in pulsed magnetic fields up to 85T. There is a clear signal, periodic in inverse field, with frequency 660+/-15T and possible evidence for the presence of two components of slightly different frequency. The quasiparticle mass is m*=3.0+/-0.3m_e. In conjunction with the results of Doiron-Leyraud et al. for YBa2Cu3O6.5, the present measurements suggest that Fermi surface pockets are a general feature of underdoped copper oxide planes and provide information about the doping dependence of the Fermi surface., Comment: Contains revisions addressing referees' comments including a different Fig 1b. 4 pages, 4 figures

Superconducting critical currents $j_{c} > 10^{5}$ A/cm$^{2}$ at temperatures $T \sim 50$ K and magnetic fields $B \sim 6$ T are reported for the YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3-x}$Mo$_{x}$O$_{7+d}$ compound with $x = 0.02$. Clear evidence for the increased pinning force $F_p$ was found from a peak effect present for $j_{c}(B)$. The pinning force was analyzed by a scaling procedure using Kramer's approach. For a wide range of fields and temperatures, we were able to express all $F_p$ data as a single function of a reduced field $b = B/B_k$, where the scaling field $B_{k} << H_{c2}$ was related to the irreversibility filed $B_{irr}$. Analyses of the field dependence of $j_{c}(B,T)$ and $F_{p}(b)$ show that the effective pinning centers act as weakly interacting extended point-like defects. We propose that the pinning centers are randomly distributed small defects, most likely the dimers of MoO$_6$ octahedra in the CuO chains., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We report on the magnetic, resistive, and structural studies of perovskite La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$CoO$_{3-\delta}$. By using the relation of synthesis temperature and oxygen partial pressure to oxygen stoichiometry obtained from thermogravimetric analysis, we have synthesized a series of samples with precisely controlled $\delta=0.00-0.49$. These samples show three structural phases at $\delta=0.00-0.15$, $\approx0.25$, $\approx0.5$, and two-phase behavior for other oxygen contents. The stoichiometric material with $\delta=0.00$ is a cubic ferromagnetic metal with the Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}=274$ K. The increase of $\delta$ to 0.15 is followed by a linear decrease of $T_{\rm C}$ to $\approx$ 160 K and a metal-insulator transition near the boundary of the cubic structure range. Further increase of $\delta$ results in formation of a tetragonal $2a_p\times 2a_p \times 4a_p$ phase for $\delta\approx 0.25$ and a brownmillerite phase for $\delta\approx0.5$. At low temperatures, these are weak ferromagnetic insulators (canted antiferromagnets) with magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm m}\approx230$ and 120 K, respectively. At higher temperatures, the $2a_p\times 2a_p \times 4a_p$ phase is $G$-type antiferromagnetic between 230 K and $\approx$360 K. Low temperature magnetic properties of this system for $\delta<1/3$ can be described in terms of a mixture of Co$^{3+}$ ions in the low-spin state and Co$^{4+}$ ions in the intermediate-spin state and a possible spin transition of Co$^{3+}$ to the intermediate-spin state above $T_{\rm C}$. Negative refraction, which reverses many fundamental aspects of classical optics, can be obtained in systems with negative magnetic permeability and negative dielectric permittivity. This Letter documents an experimental realization of negative refraction at millimeter waves, finite magnetic fields and cryogenic temperatures utilizing a multilayer stack of ferromagnetic and superconducting thin films. In the present case the superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_7 layers provide negative permittivity while negative permeability is achieved via ferromagnetic (La:Sr)MnO_3 layers for frequencies and magnetic fields close to the ferromagnetic resonance. Structural and magnetic properties have been studied for polycrystalline Zn_1-xMn_xO (x=0.02, 0.03, 0.05). Low-temperature (~500 oC) synthesis leaves unreacted starting ZnO and manganese oxides. Contrary to a recent report, no bulk ferromagnetism was observed for single-phase materials synthesized in air at temperatures above 900 oC. In order to investigate the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity on a microscopic scale, local studies using zero-field spin-echo ^{99,101}Ru NMR and ^{63,65}Cu NQR have been carried out on both superconducting and non-superconducting samples of magnetically ordered RuSr_{2}EuCu_{2}O_{8} and RuSr_{2}GdCu_{2}O_{8}. ^{99,101}Ru NMR signals were observed at 1.3 K over two distinct frequency ranges. The high frequency spectra (110 to 150 MHz), which are essentially the same for all samples, are characterized by five sharp peaks for each isotope corresponding to a hyperfine field of approximately 590 kOe with the appropriate quadrupole splitting. The low frequency spectra (40 to 90 MHz), which show significant variation from sample to sample, correspond to a much lower hyperfine field with considerable broadening and quadrupole features that are barely resolvable. As reported previously, the low frequency spectra are attributed to the Ru^{4+} valence state while the high frequency spectra are attributed to the Ru^{5+} valence state. ^{63,65}Cu NQR features were observed (26 to 34 MHz), although with considerable broadening. Structural and magnetic properties have been studied for polycrystalline Zn_{1-x}TM_xO, where TM (transition metal ions) = Mn, Fe, and Co. No bulk ferromagnetism was observed for single-phase materials, contrary to the existing theories. Single-phase samples demonstrate paramagnetic Curie-Weiss behavior with antiferromagnetic interactions, similar to other diluted magnetic semiconductors. Non-optimal synthesis conditions lead to formation of second phases that are responsible for spin-glass behavior (ZnMnO_3 impurity for Zn_{1-x}Mn_xO (S. Kolesnik et al., J. Supercond.: Incorp. We combine the results of magnetic and transport measurements with Mossbauer spectroscopy and room-temperature diffraction data to construct the magnetic phase diagram of the new family of cubic perovskite manganites SrMn_1-xFe_xO_3. We have found antiferromagnetic ordering for lightly and heavily Fe-substituted material, while intermediate substitution leads to spin-glass behavior. Near the SrMn_0.5Fe_0.5O_3 composition these two types of ordering are found to coexist and affect one another. The synthesis of SrRuO3 under high-pressure oxygen produces a nonstoichiometric form with randomly distributed vacancies on the Ru-sites, along with a significantly reduced ferromagnetic ordering temperature. In order to gain additional insight into the suppression of the ferromagnetism, local studies utilizing 99,101 Ru zero-field spin-echo NMR, and Ru K-edge XAFS, along with complimentary magnetization and x-ray diffraction measurements, have been carried out on samples of SrRuO3 annealed at both ("ambient") atmospheric pressure and "high-pressure" oxygen (600 atm). Consistent with previous work, the NMR spectrum for "ambient" SrRuO3 consists of two well-defined peaks at 64.4 MHz and 72.2 MHz corresponding to the 99Ru and 101Ru isotopes, respectively, and a hyperfine field of 329 kG. Although the magnetization measurements show a lower ferromagnetic ordering temperature for the "high-pressure" oxygen sample (90 K compared to 160 K for the "ambient" sample), the NMR spectrum shows no significant shift in the two peak frequencies. However, the two peaks exhibit considerable broadening, along with structure on both the low and high frequency sides which is believed to be quadrupolar in origin. Analysis of the Ru K-edge XAFS reveals more disorder in the Ru-O bond for the "high-pressure" oxygen sample compared to the "ambient" sample. Furthermore, XANES of Ru K-edge analysis indicates no difference in the valence of Ru between the two samples. Alternating current susceptibility and direct current magnetization have been studied for polycrystalline Ca$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$O. On increasing the Mn content, magnetic ordering changes from spin-glass behavior for $0.25 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.4$ to antiferromagnetic order. The paramagnetic/antiferromagnetic transition is of second order for $0.5 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.65$ and of first order for $x \geqslant 0.7$. We discuss the properties of new superconducting compositions of Ru(1-x)Sr2RECu(2+x)O(8-d) (RE=Gd, Eu) ruthenocuprates that were synthesized at 600 atm. of oxygen at 1080 C. By changing ratio between the Ru and Cu, the temperature of superconducting transition (Tc) raises up to Tc max=72 K for x=0.3, 0.4. The hole doping achieved along the series increases with Cu->Ru substitution. For x different than x=0, Tc can be subsequently tuned between Tc max and 0 K by changing oxygen content in the compounds. The magnetic characteristics of the RE=Gd and Eu based compounds are interpreted as indicative of constrained dimensionality of the superconducting phase. Muon spin rotation experiments reveal the presence of the magnetic transitions at low temperatures (Tm=14-2 K for x=0.1-0.4) that can originate in the response of Ru/Cu sublattices. RuSr2Gd(1-y)Ce(1-y)Cu2O8 (0Gd substitution. Properties of these two series allow us to propose phase diagram for 1212-type ruthenocuprates that links their properties to the hole doping achieved in the systems. Synthesis in 1% oxygen at 930C leads to non-superconducting RuSr2GdCu2O8 in which superconductivity subsequently can be induced with oxygen annealings without observable stoichiometric changes. Detailed ac susceptibility and zero-field muon spin rotation experiments reveal that the superconducting compounds always exhibit a lower temperature of the magnetic transition and larger values of the internal magnetic field in the ordered state of the Ru sublattice. The same annealings in oxygen, however, lead to non-superconducting RuSr2EuCu2O8. The magnetic properties of a newly discovered series of Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-y superconductors (maximum Tc=72 K for x=0.4) are reported. Low temperature behavior of the magnetization shows a significant contribution of the paramagnetic system of Gd ions to the magnetic response below the superconducting transition. Muon-spin rotation experiments reveal the presence of bulk magnetic transitions at low temperature for compounds with x<=0.4. We report on the properties of new ruthenocuprates Ru(1-x)Sr2GdCu(2+x)O(8-y) (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.75) that extend the superconductivity found previously in RuSr2GdCu2O8 (Tc=45 K) to the solid solution with varied Ru/Cu ratios. The compounds have been synthesized in high-pressure oxygen atmosphere. The maximum temperature of the superconducting transition is 72 K for the x=0.3 and 0.4 compositions. The reported behavior of magnetization at low temperatures can be qualitatively explained assuming a quasi-two-dimensional character of the superconducting regions in compounds studied., Comment: to be published in Phys.Rev.B

In previous studies on a number of under- and overdoped high temperature superconductors, including YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-y} and Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+\delta}, the transition temperature T_c has been found to change with time in a manner which depends on the sample's detailed temperature and pressure history. This relaxation behavior in T_c is believed to originate from rearrangements within the oxygen sublattice. In the present high-pressure studies on HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} to 0.8 GPa we find clear evidence for weak relaxation effects in strongly under- and overdoped samples ($T_c\simeq 40 - 50 K$) with an activation energy $E_{A}(1 bar) \simeq 0.8 - 0.9 eV$. For overdoped HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} E_{A} increases under pressure more rapidly than previously observed for YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.41}, yielding an activation volume of +11 \pm 5 cm^{3}; the dependence of T_c on pressure is markedly nonlinear, an anomalous result for high-T_c superconductors in the present pressure range, giving evidence for a change in the electronic and/or structural properties near 0.4 GPa.

The vortex response to various ac-drives has been studied in high quality $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ single crystals. Well within the vortex solid phase a re-entrant resistive state has been observed that is characterized by long relaxation times. Pulse current response and IV characteristics reveal that in this state the driven vortex system relaxes in a way to increase t he effective pinning force. A phenomenological model accounts for the observed features, in particular the clock-wise hysteresis of the IV-curves and the increase of the apparent critical current with applied current amplitude., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL
