While more and more services become virtualized and always accessible in our society, laboratories supporting computer science (CS) lectures have mainly remained offline and class-based. This apparent abnormality is due to several limiting factors, discussed in the literature, such as the high cost of deploying and maintaining computer network testbeds and the lack of standardization for the presentation of eLearning platforms. In this paper, we present the FORGE toolkit, which leverages experimentation facilities currently deployed in international initiatives for the development of e-learning materials. Thus, we solve the institutional challenge mentioned in the ACM/IEEE 2013 CS curricula concerning the access and maintenance of specialized and heterogeneous hardware thanks to a seamless integration with the networking test-bed community. Moreover, this project builds an ecosystem, where teaching and educational materials, tools, and experiments are available under open scheme and policies. We demonstrate how it already meets most of the requirements from the network and communication component of CS 2013 and some of the labs of the Cisco academy. Finally, we present experience reports illustrating the potential benefits of this framework based on the first deployments in four post-graduate courses in prestigious institutions around the world.

Remote labs and online experimentation offer a rich opportunity to learners by allowing them to control real equipment at distance in order to conduct scientific investigations. Remote labs and online experimentation build on top of numerous emerging technologies for supporting remote experiments and promoting the immersion of the learner in online environments recreating the real experience. This paper presents a methodology for the design, delivery and evaluation of learning resources for remote experimentation. This methodology has been developed in the context of the European project FORGE, which promotes online learning using Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) facilities. FORGE is a step towards turning FIRE into a pan-European educational platform for Future Internet. This will benefit learners and educators by giving them both access to world-class facilities in order to carry out experiments on e.g. new internet protocols. In turn, this supports constructivist and self-regulated learning approaches, through the use of interactive learning resources, such as eBooks.

A large amount of research focuses on experimentally optimizing the performance of wireless solutions. Finding the optimal performance settings typically requires investigating all possible combinations of design parameters, while the number of required experiments increases exponentially for each considered design parameter. The aim of this paper is to analyze the applicability of global optimization techniques to reduce the optimization time of wireless experimentation. In particular, the paper applies the Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) algorithm implemented in the SUrrogate MOdeling (SUMO) toolbox inside a wireless testbed. Moreover, to cope with the unpredictable nature of wireless testbeds, the paper applies an experiment outlier detection which monitors outside interference and verifies the validity of conducted experiments. The proposed techniques are implemented and evaluated in a wireless testbed using a realistic wireless conferencing scenario. The performance gain and experimentation time of a SUMO optimized experiment is compared against an exhaustively searched experiment. In our proof of concept, it is shown that the proposed SUMO optimizer reaches 99.79% of the global optimum performance while requiring 8.67 times less experiments compared to the exhaustive search experiment.

Mobile WiMAX is today one of the potential technology choices for delivering mobile broadband access. Despite its potential, existing radio coverage calculations only relate to a low level physical data rate, rather than to the actual MAC (Medium Access Control) throughput, which is more meaningful from a user's perspective. We therefore elaborated on linking high level MAC throughput to low level radio coverage. We simulated the complete system, thereby ultimately combining two metrics most sought for: MAC throughput by radio coverage range. With respect to those metrics, the impact of time dispersion models, MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), the packet size and the number of users is studied. In a 5 MHz band at 2.5 GHz, maximum ranges are found to vary between 1.2 km and 1.9 km, while the highest MAC throughput was found here to vary between 4.64 Mbps and 10.32 Mbps, for the considered parameters values and use case.

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are commonly deployed in various environments. The WLAN data packets are not transmitted continuously but often worst-case exposure of WLAN is assessed, assuming 100% activity and leading to huge overestimations. Actual duty cycles of WLAN are thus of importance for time-averaging of exposure when checking compliance with international guidelines on limiting adverse health effects. In this paper, duty cycles of WLAN using Wi-Fi technology are determined for exposure assessment on large scale at 179 locations for different environments and activities (file transfer, video streaming, audio, surfing on the internet, etc.). The median duty cycle equals 1.4% and the 95th percentile is 10.4% (standard deviation SD = 6.4%). Largest duty cycles are observed in urban and industrial environments. For actual applications, the theoretical upper limit for the WLAN duty cycle is 69.8% and 94.7% for maximum and minimum physical data rate, respectively. For lower data rates, higher duty cycles will occur. Although counterintuitive at first sight, poor WLAN connections result in higher possible exposures. File transfer at maximum data rate results in median duty cycles of 47.6% (SD = 16%), while it results in median values of 91.5% (SD = 18%) at minimum data rate. Surfing and audio streaming are less intensively using the wireless medium and therefore have median duty cycles lower than 3.2% (SD = 0.5–7.5%). For a specific example, overestimations up to a factor 8 for electric fields occur, when considering 100% activity compared to realistic duty cycles.

Most researchers are familiar with the technical features of WiMAX technology but the evolution that WiMAX went through, in terms of standardization and certification, is missing and unknown to most people. Knowledge of this historical process would however aid to understand how WiMAX has become the widespread technology that it is today. Furthermore, it would give insight in the steps to undertake for anyone aiming at introducing a new wireless technology on a worldwide scale. Therefore, this article presents a survey on all relevant activities that took place within three important organizations: the 802.16 Working Group of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) for technology development and standardization, the WiMAX Forum for product certification and the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) for international recognition. An elaborated and comprehensive overview of all those activities is given, which reveals the importance of the willingness to innovate and to continuously incorporate new ideas in the IEEE standardization process and the importance of the WiMAX Forum certification label granting process to ensure interoperability. We also emphasize the steps that were taken in cooperating with the ITU to improve the international esteem of the technology. Finally, a WiMAX trend analysis is made. We showed how industry interest has fluctuated over time and quantified the evolution in WiMAX product certification and deployments. It is shown that most interest went to the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequencies, that most deployments are in geographic regions with a lot of developing countries and that the highest people coverage is achieved in Asia Pacific. This elaborated description of all standardization and certification activities, from the very start up to now, will make the reader comprehend how past and future steps are taken in the development process of new WiMAX features.

In the railway industry, there are nowadays different actors who would like to send or receive data from the wayside to an onboard device or vice versa. These actors are e.g., the Train Operation Company, the Train Constructing Company, a Content Provider, etc. This requires a communication module on each train and at the wayside. These modules interact with each other over heterogeneous wireless links. This system is referred to as the Train-to-Wayside Communication System (TWCS). While there are already a lot of deployments using a TWCS, the implementation of quality of service, performance enhancing proxies (PEP) and the network mobility functions have not yet been fully integrated in TWCS systems. Therefore, we propose a novel and modular IPv6-enabled TWCS architecture in this article. It jointly tackles these functions and considers their mutual dependencies and relationships. DiffServ is used to differentiate between service classes and priorities. Virtual local area networks are used to differentiate between different service level agreements. In the PEP, we propose to use a distributed TCP accelerator to optimize bandwidth usage. Concerning network mobility, we propose to use the SCTP protocol (with Dynamic Address Reconfiguration and PR-SCTP extensions) to create a tunnel per wireless link, in order to support the reliable transmission of data between the accelerators. We have analyzed different design choices, pinpointed the main implementation challenges and identified candidate solutions for the different modules in the TWCS system. As such, we present an elaborated framework that can be used for prototyping a fully featured TWCS.

Although Internet on the train and train to wayside communication in general becomes more and more available for train operators, there are still a lot of challenges for future research. We previously developed a network platform that is responsible for an uninterrupted and seamless connectivity from the train to the wayside through heterogeneous wireless access technologies. This paper mainly focuses on the concept for providing sufficient Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in a dynamic train environment. Within this network platform, IPv6 strategies are adopted for QoS, exploiting multi-homing and intelligent aggregation techniques. The implementation that has been done in the Click Modular Router programming environment will also be presented in details.

Internet-on-the-train is a rising concept in the last few years. Several trials in different countries have proved the feasibility of offering Internet access to train commuters, but none of them combines broadband access, scalability, seamless handover and quality of service guarantees in one solution. In this paper, we look at the features of SCTP and its extensions which could overcome these shortcomings and which were successfully demonstrated.

The digital broadcasting standards DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) enables a high data rate broadcast access for hand-held terminals (e.g., portable, pocket-size battery-operated phones). For actual DVB-H reception, indoor coverage is required because users are likely to be inside a building. Therefore, one needs building-penetration models, accounting for an additional propagation loss, due to the building where the user is present. This paper presents the penetration loss measurements performed at 600 MHz (ultra high frequency or UHF, band V) in an office building in a suburban environment. At this frequency the propagation characteristics remain acceptable to offer coverage in a large area and the size of the receiving antenna is suitable for integration in a handheld.

Internet-on-the-train is a rising concept in the last few years. Several trials in different countries have proved the feasibility of offering Internet access to train commuters, but none of them combines broadband access, scalability, seamless handover and quality of service guarantees in one solution. In this paper, we propose a new architecture to satisfy these needs. Using real handover measurement data of several common broadband wireless technologies, we compare two possible inter-working mobility solutions: Mobile Multi-Path SCTP (MMP-SCTP) and Mobile IP (MIP).
