Los tópicos cubiertos por el capítulo se agrupan, en consecuencia, según el tipo de gestión ambiental que corresponda. En el apartado sobre la gestión del patrimonio se examina la conservación de las áreas protegidas, conocimientos y usos de la biodiversidad y conciencia ambiental. En el de la gestión del cambio -la sección más extensase estudia el uso del suelo, los recursos marinos y costeros, aguas continentales, aire, energía, disposición de desechos y medio ambiente urbano. Finalmente, en el análisis sobre la gestión del riesgo se hace referencia a desastres asociados a fenómenos naturales y actividades humanas, cambio climático. El tema de la participación ciudadana se trabaja como un eje transversal en todo el capítulo. Es inevitable, por la variabilidad en la información anual disponible y por la amplitud de los temas, que algunos de ellos sean tratados con mayor profundidad que otros. Este año reciben un énfasis particular los tópicos de participación ciudadana e indígena y la gestión ambiental de los recursos marino- costeros. El capítulo inicia con una nota sobre la dimensión internacional de la gestión ambiental, en la cual se analiza la participación de Costa Rica en diversos foros mundiales y regionales. El capítulo está basado en las investigaciones de 9 consultores y un grupo amplio de colaboradores.

A nationwide survey in Costa Rica, using Kellert's conceptual framework (Kellert, S.R. 1996. The Value of Life. Washington D.C., Island Press), revealed at least five attitude dimensions toward animals. Overall, Costa Rican adults have a strong sentimental attitude toward animals, an expression of feelings of affection toward animals. In contrast, the materialistic attitude, which regards animals as resources and praises acts of control over them, is weak. This reflects a prevailing opposition to the act of hunting per se, rather than to its potentially detrimental effect on natural populations. There is a strong inquisitive attitude, corresponding to a widespread interest in learning about the biology of animals and their habitats. High scores on the ethical attitude indicate concern for the ethical treatment of animals and nature. The schematic attitude emphasizes the role of aesthetic appearance in the preferences for certain animals and acknowledges feelings of aversion, dislike or fear of some animals. Scores for this attitude were weakly positive. The attitude profile of Costa Ricans is probably incomplete, given the small battery of questions used in this study and differences between this and Kellert's study in the assignment of questions to particular attitudes resulting from the factor analysis. Aesthetic appeal of the animals, compassion, affection and a desire to please and stimulate the children are important motives for the acquisition of wild animals as pets. These positive feelings and a misguided empathy for animals backfire by condemning these pets to an alien environment and inadequate care. The current study also showed that adults who keep wildlife have better biological knowledge than those who never kept wildlife as pets. In addition, Costa Ricans ranked highest in the percentage of correct answers to five questions about animals, in comparison to Kellert's data for US and Japanese citizens (Kellert S.R. 1993. Journal of Social Issues 49: 53-69). Such knowledge of natural history and an animal protection profile, however, do not translate into more animal friendly practices, as seen by the keeping of wildlife as pets under conditions of concern. Rather than changing the attitudes of Costa Ricans toward animals, the challenge is to increase the awareness about the animals' needs and thereby trigger the ethical concern for their well-being. © 2002 International Society for Anthrozoology. Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare soft tissue infection and a life-threatening emergency, often fatal. Its incidence and management are described plentifully in the medical literature regarding the most common anatomical sites involved like the abdomen, lower and upper limbs, and perineum. However, available data and case reports of chest wall necrotizing fasciitis after thoracic procedures are scarce, mainly after major cardiac operations. We report and discuss a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall occurring in the immediate postoperative period of a cardiac procedure, and include a brief review of the concepts, pathophysiology, and treatment reported in the medical literature. We emphasize the need for early diagnosis and urgent and effective surgical debridement. Of importance is the fact that we have not found any references in the literature to cases similar or equal to the one we describe here, which occurred in the postoperative period of a cardiac procedure.

En el año 2001, el agua ilustró de manera evidente la interrelación entre estos tres ámbitos. La protección de las cuencas, su biodiversidad y sus suelos, es la base para garantizar el abastecimiento de agua de calidad a la GAM durante todo el año. El agua superficial, sin embargo, se ha tornado en amenaza ante un desarrollo urbano poco planificado. La negligencia en la disposición de basura genera tapones en un alcantarillado pluvial deficiente, propiciando muchas de las inundaciones que ocurren durante la época lluviosa, con un alto costo social y económico para el país. El deficiente manejo de los desechos líquidos y sólidos en las áreas urbanas es responsable de la deteriorada calidad del recurso hídrico aguas abajo. La contaminación de los ríos que vienen de la GAM y desembocan en el golfo de Nicoya incrementa la factura ambiental, de nuevo, con elevados costos sociales y económicos, y compromete la salud de las comunidades costeras. Este capítulo da seguimiento a los indicadores reseñados en informes previos, sin pretender abordar en profundidad todos los ámbitos de la gestión ambiental, sino haciendo énfasis en aquellos temas que fueron más relevantes durante el año 2001, bien sea en la opinión pública o en la mesa de discusión de expertos, a la luz de información reciente disponible. En primera instancia se presentan los hallazgos en la gestión del patrimonio natural. Dada la diversidad de experiencias en la gestión de las áreas de conservación, estas se reseñarán a partir de este informe a manera de recuadros; esta edición incluye el Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG), el Area de Conservación Osa (ACOSA) y el Area de Conservación Cordillera Volcánica Central (ACCVC). Se aborda el tema de especies amenazadas y se reflexiona sobre la efectividad biológica y gerencial de las áreas protegidas para conservar la biodiversidad.
