In vitro studies of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) have been widely reported. Frequently mock artery models with intraluminal thrombus (ILT,) analogs are used to mimic the in vivo AAA. While the models used may be physiological, their properties are frequently either not reported or investigated. This study is concerned with the testing and characterization of previously used vessel analog materials and the development of new materials for the manufacture of AAA models. These materials were used in conjunction with a previously validated injection molding technique to manufacture AM models of ideal geometry. To determine the model properties (stiffness (β) and compliance), the diameter change of each AAA model was investigated under incrementally increasing internal pressures and compared with published in vivo studies to determine to the models behaved physiologically. A FEA study was implemented to determine if the pressurediameter change behavior of the models could be predicted numerically. ILT analogs were also manufactured and characterized. Ideal models were manufactured with ILT analog internal to the aneurysm region, and the effect of the ILT analog on the model compliance and stiffness was investigated. The wall materials had similar properties (Einit 2.22 MPa and 1.57 MPa) to aortic tissue at physiological pressures (1.8 MPCi (from literature)). ILT analogs had a similar Young's modulus (0.24 MPa and 0.33 MPa) to the medial layer of ILT (0.28 MPa (from literature)). All models had aneurysm sac compliance (2.62-8.01 × 10-4 / mm Hg) in the physiological range (1.8-9.4 × 10-4/ mn Hg (from literature)). The necks of the AM models had similar stiffness (20.44-29.83) to healthy aortas (17.5 ±5.5 (from literature)). Good agreement was seen between the diameter changes due to pressurization in the experimental and FEA wall models with a maximum difference of 7.3% at 120 mm Hg. It was also determined that the inclusion of ILT analog in the sac of the models could have an effect on the compliance of the model neck. Ideal AAA models with physiological properties were manufactured. The behavior of these models due to pressurization was predicted using finite element analysis, validating this technique for the future design of realistic physiological AAA models. Heavy-mineral concentrates (garnets, chromites) and xenoliths from 21 Cretaceous-Tertiary kimberlite intrusions have been used to map the lithospheric mantle beneath the Lac de Gras area in the central part of the Slave Province. Analyses of Nickel Temperature (TNi) and Zinc Temperature (TZn) have been used to place garnet and chromite xenocrysts, respectively, in depth context. Paleogeotherms derived from both xenoliths and concentrates lie near a 35 mW/m2 conductive model at T <= 900°C, and near a 38 mW/m2 model at higher T, implying a marked change in conductivity and/or a thermal transient. Plots of garnet composition vs TNi also show a sharp discontinuity in mantle composition at 900°C. Garnets from <145 km depth are ultradepleted in Y, Zr, Ti and Ga, whereas those from greater depths (to >= 200 km) are similar to garnets from Archean mantle world-wide. Relative abundances of garnet types indicate that the shallow layer consists of ~60% (clinopyroxene-free) harzburgite and 40% lherzolite, whereas the deeper layer contains 15-20% harzburgite and 80-85% lherzolite. T estimates on eclogite xenoliths show that all were derived from the deeper layer. Xenolith data and garnet compositions indicate that the shallow layer is more magnesian (Fo92-94) than the deeper layer (Fo91-92), and both layers are more olivine rich than South African or Siberian Archean peridotite xenoliths. The composition and sharply defined structure of the Lac de Gras lithosphere are unique within our current knowledge of Archean mantle sections. The shallow layer of this lithosphere section is similar to peridotites from some highly depleted ophiolites from convergent-margin settings, and may have formed in a similar situation during the accretion of the Hackett and Contwoyto terranes (magmatic arc and accretionary prism, respectively) to the ancient continental Anton terrane at 2·6-2·7 Ga. The deeper layer is interpreted as a plume head, which rose from the lower mantle and underplated the existing lithosphere at 2·6 Ga; evidence includes a high proportion of the superdeep inclusion assemblage (ferropericlase-perovskite) in the diamond population. This event could have provided heat for generation of the widespread 2·6 Ga post-tectonic granites. Mechanical testing of arterial tissue can provide unique insights into its behaviour. As measurement and computational techniques continue to advance, new applications can be discovered that increase the accuracy of characterising tissue behaviour. This review provides an overview of the general considerations involved in testing arterial tissue and discusses the more commonly employed in vitro techniques used to assess the mechanical properties of arterial tissue, as well as emerging techniques. The more common methods discussed are uniaxial, planar biaxial and inflation testing. With the increasing precision and versatility of optical measuring systems and the rising interest in the mechanical behaviour of vessels with complex geometries and material properties, we also discuss the emerging trend of full-field measurement systems. Mechanical testing can be combined with bioreactor techniques to characterise the dynamic remodelling of arterial tissue in response to its mechanical environment. The analysis and characterisation provided by advanced mechanical testing techniques can produce and inform more accurate surgical simulations, as well as aid in the risk prediction and modelling of pathological conditions. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) can be defined as a permanent and irreversible dilation of the infrarenal aorta. AAAs are often considered to be an aorta with a diameter 1.5 times the normal infrarenal aorta diameter. This paper describes a technique to manufacture realistic silicone AAA models for use with experimental studies. This paper is concerned with the reconstruction and manufacturing process of patient-specific AAAs. 3D reconstruction from computed tomography scan data allows the AAA to be created. Mould sets are then designed for these AAA models utilizing computer aided design/computer aided manufacture techniques and combined with the injection-moulding method. Silicone rubber forms the basis of the resulting AAA model. Assessment of wall thickness and overall percentage difference from the final silicone model to that of the computer-generated model was performed. In these realistic AAA models, wall thickness was found to vary by an average of 9.21%. The percentage difference in wall thickness recorded can be attributed to the contraction of the casting wax and the expansion of the silicone during model manufacture. This method may be used in conjunction with wall stress studies using the photoelastic method or in fluid dynamic studies using a laser-Doppler anemometry. In conclusion, these patient-specific rubber AAA models can be used in experimental investigations, but should be assessed for wall thickness variability once manufactured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
