Abstract

Visible–near-infrared–shortwave-infrared (VNIR–SWIR) spectroscopy is one of the most promising sensing techniques to meet ever-growing demands for soil information and data. To ensure the successful application of this technique in the field, efficient methods for tackling detrimental moisture effects on soil spectra are critical. In this paper, mathematical techniques for reducing or removing the effects of soil moisture content (SMC) from spectra are reviewed. The reviewed techniques encompass the most common spectral pre-processing and algorithms, as well as less frequently reported methods including approaches within the remote sensing domain. Examples of studies describing their effectiveness in the search for calibration model improvement are provided. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of the different techniques are summarized. Future research including further studies on a wider range of soil types, in-field conditions, and systematic experiments considering several SMC levels to enable the definition of threshold values for the effectiveness of the discussed methods is recommended. Abstract

Recent developments in the monitoring of soil degradation processes have used passive remote sensing (diffuse reflectance spectroscopy) and active remote-sensing tools such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and frequency domain electromagnetic induction (FDEM). We have limited our review to three important degradation processes: structural crust, salinity', and soil mineral deformation and alterations caused by fire. These degradation processes, leading to declines in soil fertility and productivity, are commonly viewed in terms of their spatial and temporal distribution and variability, making spatial monitoring tools such as remote sensing the preferred choice. Recent work has shown that a hyperspectral (narrow-bands) approach combined with active remote sensing (FDEM and GPR) can be used to provide detailed, three-dimensional maps of soil salinity status in croplands. Such a map could improve our understanding of salinization mechanisms and salt sources, leading to improved drainage-system planning and management. Another pronounced hazard is structural crust formation following rainstorm events, which decreases soil infiltration, accelerates water runoff, and increases the potential for soil erosion. The spatial distribution of soil infiltration can be assessed using spectral information. Finally, recent studies have shown the potential of hyperspectral spectroscopy to assess and monitor mineralogical, chemical, and physical changes, some irreversible, in post-fire soils. The irreversible changes may serve as a footprint of fire intensity but may also affect the burned ecosystem's recovery. Abstract

A controlled investigation of the spectral signature of soil's structural crust in the 1.2- to 2.5-[micro]m spectral region was conducted to investigate the feasibility of accounting for the crust status solely from the spectral information. This research was conducted because there is no valid method for in situ assessment of soil-crust characteristics in agricultural fields while and after the crust is formed. Through the use of a laboratory rainfall simulator and a sensitive spectrometer, we showed that significant spectral differences occurred between the crust and the bulk soil for three selected soils from Israel. The study was divided into two parts: Part 1, in which qualitative observations of the three soils were conducted under one level of rainstorm energy, and Part 2, where a selected soil was further investigated under varying levels of rain energy. The spectral differences obtained for the crusted soil are related to the texture and mineralogy of the soil's surface. It was concluded that the relationship between structural crust and soil reflectance spectroscopy can be used as a tool for estimating soil properties governed by the physical crust formation, such as infiltration rate, soil runoff, and erosion. It was further suggested that this methodology be tested within a remote sensing domain, using field, air, or spaceborne hyperspectral sensors.

Abstract

With the increasing role that unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are playing in data collection for environmental studies, two key challenges relate to harmonizing and providing standardized guidance for data collection, and also establishing protocols that are applicable across a broad range of environments and conditions. In this context, a network of scientists are cooperating within the framework of the Harmonious Project to develop and promote harmonized mapping strategies and disseminate operational guidance to ensure best practice for data collection and interpretation. The culmination of these efforts is summarized in the present manuscript. Through this synthesis study, we identify the many interdependencies of each step in the collection and processing chain, and outline approaches to formalize and ensure a successful workflow and product development. Given the number of environmental conditions, constraints, and variables that could possibly be explored from UAS platforms, it is impractical to provide protocols that can be applied universally under all scenarios. However, it is possible to collate and systematically order the fragmented knowledge on UAS collection and analysis to identify the best practices that can best ensure the streamlined and rigorous development of scientific products. © 2020 by the authors. Abstract

The new era of hyperspectral remote (HSR) sensors in orbit is approaching. Missions such as CHIME of the European Space Agency (ESA), EMIT/SBG of NASA, EnMAP of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and SHALOM of the Israel Space Agency (ISA) will launch in the near future, while other HSR sensors are already in orbit, such as DESIS of DLR, PRISMA of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and HISUI of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Vicarious calibration (VC) of satellite sensors is vital to tracking a sensor's performance during its lifetime and is a routine procedure in any satellite mission. Accordingly, searching for ideal sites for CAL/VAL operation is an important task that should be part of the mission planning. This study demonstrates two areas in southern Israel that can be acquired in one overpass as VC sites: Amiaz Plain (AP) and Makhtesh Ramon (MR), which were evaluated for their fulfillment of all VC requirements for HSR sensors. AP (5 km2 of homogeneous bright target) was found suitable for radiometric calibration, and MR (200 km2) for spectral and thematic validations. We checked the applicability of these sites using a high-end airborne HRS sensor (AisaFENIX 1K sensor with 420 bands, 375–2500 nm spectral range, and 1.5-m spatial resolution) along with comprehensive field studies and ground measurements. Accordingly, we developed an operational VC protocol to use these sites for both radiometric and spectral quality inspection of HRS satellites. We demonstrated this capability on recent PRISMA and DESIS reflectance products. Here we provide these analyses and recommend how to use these areas to further examine DESIS data's performance. We call for collaborations with individuals and space agencies in using these VC sites, where we will provide ground-truth information and fulfill any other requirements for VC. Abstract

The SSM/I (Spectral Sensor Microwave Imager) dataset is used to monitor surface wind speed and direction at four locations over the Eastern Mediterranean during December 1998 - January 1999. Time series of these data are compared to concurrent series of precipitation, surface temperature, humidity and winds at selected Israeli stations: Sde Dov (coastal), Bet Dagan (5 km. inland), Jerusalem (Judean Hills), Hafetz Haim (3 km. inland) and Sde Boker (central Negev). December 1998 and the beginning of January 1999 were dry in Israel, but significant precipitation was recorded at many stations during the second half of January (1999). SSM/I data show a surge in westerly surface winds west of Israel (32 N, 32.5 E) on 15 January, coinciding with the renewal of precipitation. We discuss the relevant circulation and pressure patterns during this transition in the context of the evolving meteorological conditions at the selected Israeli locations. The SSM/I dataset of near ocean surface winds, available for the last 12 years, is described. We analyze lagged correlation between these data and the Israeli station data and investigate possibility of predictive skill. Application of such relationships to short-term weather prediction would require real-time access to the SSM/I observations.

[EN] Environmental monitoring plays a central role in diagnosing climate and management impacts on natural and agricultural systems; enhancing the understanding of hydrological processes; optimizing the allocation and distribution of water resources; and assessing, forecasting, and even preventing natural disasters. Nowadays, most monitoring and data collection systems are based upon a combination of ground-based measurements, manned airborne sensors, and satellite observations. These data are utilized in describing both small-and large-scale processes, but have spatiotemporal constraints inherent to each respective collection system. Bridging the unique spatial and temporal divides that limit current monitoring platforms is key to improving our understanding of environmental systems. In this context, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) have considerable potential to radically improve environmental monitoring. UAS-mounted sensors offer an extraordinary opportunity to bridge the existing gap between field observations and traditional air-and space-borne remote sensing, by providing high spatial detail over relatively large areas in a cost-effective way and an entirely new capacity for enhanced temporal retrieval. As well as showcasing recent advances in the field, there is also a need to identify and understand the potential limitations of UAS technology. For these platforms to reach their monitoring potential, a wide spectrum of unresolved issues and application-specific challenges require focused community attention. Indeed, to leverage the full potential of UAS-based approaches, sensing technologies, measurement protocols, postprocessing techniques, retrieval algorithms, and evaluation techniques need to be harmonized. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the existing research and applications of UAS in natural and agricultural ecosystem monitoring in order to identify future directions, applications, developments, and challenges.
